The Technical Area makes a return for the new season and I’m delighted to have joined the Fantasy Football Scout writing team to bring this to you.

These articles will mainly be available for members following Gameweek 1 but, for my debut, I offer a preview of what is to come with some analysis of Sunday’s Wembley showpiece.

The final domestic appetiser to the upcoming season, Sunday’s Community Shield between champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal proved a sedate affair that will perhaps be remembered more for the involvement of referee Bobby Madley than any single player’s contribution.

Nonetheless, as our last chance to observe two high-profile Premier League sides in action before the Gameweek 1 deadline – and with many popular FPL assets presumed to participate – interest from the Fantasy community was understandably high.

With only the one game to analyse this week, we’ll be focusing our attention on the performances of two newly-signed Arsenal players who put forward interesting, if very different, showings on the field.

Sead KolaŔinac

We’ll start with Sead KolaÅ”inac, whose afternoon threatened to be something of a non-event after he was named among the substitutes to open the match. A nasty head injury to Per Mertesacker on the half-hour mark, however, gave the Bosnian his chance to shine; an opportunity he seized with both hands.

Though pre-season projections had earmarked KolaÅ”inac to compete for a spot as a left-wing back in Arsenal’s 3-4-2-1 system, Wenger’s substitution saw the Bosnian fielded as a left-sided central defender alongside Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding.

Typically, we would have expected this more defensive positioning to have impinged upon KolaÅ”inac’s chances to get forward in support of the Arsenal attack. Yet analysing our game data, we can observe that KolaÅ”inac was frequently occupying space upon the left-flank, consistently drifting out to the touchline to receive possession:

Kolasinac – Passes Received
members

This profile translates much more readily to the heatmap of a traditional left wing-back than that of a centre half. In fact, it is eerily reminiscent of the performance and positioning of another left-sided wide player participating in Sunday’s match:

Kolasinac vs Alonso – Touches
members

Given Alonso’s barnstorming FPL campaign in 2016/17, KolaÅ”inac’s tendencies to occupy the same attacking space – even in spite of his ostensibly more defensive position – bodes well for his likelihood of producing attacking returns heading into the new season.

The defender also demonstrated an ability to pose a threat on the end of set-pieces, notching Arsenal’s equaliser by rising to divert Granit Xhaka’s cross into the net.

The underlying numbers for KolaŔinac were promising too. Despite playing only limited minutes, the defender produced 17 passes in opposition territory (with a 100% success rate), including five in the final third. These compared favourably to those of Alonso (10, 5) and Victor Moses (12, 7).

It should be noted that Hector Bellerin – playing on the right-hand flank of Arsenal’s formation – outshone even KolaÅ”inac in this regard, with 29 passes in the opposing half and 21 in the danger zone, while he created two excellent goalscoring opportunities in the process.

Such a performance demonstrates the attacking potential of the wing-back position within Arsenal’s current set-up and underlines the tantalising prospects of either player as an FPL asset moving forward.

KolaÅ”inac also put in an impressive defensive performance, winning all three of his tackles and racking up five recoveries – traits which would translate well into FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS).

Alexandre Lacazette

In contrast to KolaÅ”inac’s impressive debut, Lacazette cut a significantly less imposing figure during Sunday’s match-up.

Often isolated in space against Chelsea’s trio of centre backs, Lacazette amassed just 24 touches during his disappointing 66-minute spell – fewer than any other starter. Of these, far too many were found by dropping deep into space ahead of Chelsea’s backline, from which he was quickly smothered by defensive pressure.

Lacazette – Touches
members

The Frenchmen displayed occasional glimpses of his attacking prowess. On two or three occasions, Lacazette found himself in dangerous positions; only for Chelsea’s defensive line to close on him before he had a chance to capitalise.

His brightest moment came in the first-half, when he was able to free himself on the edge of the penalty area and curl an early shot against the post. Yet this effort would prove to be Lacazette’s only goal attempt of the match and he would be replaced shortly after the hour mark by Olivier Giroud (who himself failed to make much of an impression, albeit in limited time).

The usual caveats apply here, of course – this was only a single match, and consequently it is certainly much too early for us to jump to any definitive conclusions about Lacazette’s Fantasy prospects for the coming year. For the record, I am optimistic of his season-long goalscoring potential, as are our Rate My Team projections.

It is similarly important to note that Arsenal were missing the combined creative impetus of Mesut Ɩzil, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey for this fixture – players who would have both demanded defensive attention and worked to produce more threatening through-balls to the striker.

Nonetheless, even after claiming his first trophy as a member of Arsene Wenger’s squad, this was likely not a match that Lacazette will want to remember.

I'm not sold on Fraser and I'd swap one of your Spurs mids for Mané or Salah but very well structured side.

Double Spurs MF just because I dont have Kane šŸ˜›

Plus theres no other premium MF that caught my attention

(Already have Firmino, so no need for another Liverpool MF)

Im still going back and forth between Arter or JWP.

Pick him ATM because he rotates well with Carroll. Thoughts?

I would spread the midfield love, aka just keep 1 of the spurs duo

Any other premium MF other than these two/Mane/Salah/KdB that I perhaps overlook?

Got Fraser simply because he rotates well with Carroll till GW 5 (planning to WC in GW 6)

Bailly is the cheaper option than Valencia for ManU defence and a confirmed starter.

5.5 for a GK (DDG) is a bit too much for me.

How is 5.5 too much compared to 6.0??? Both will rely on clean sheet points only. Bailly doesnt score/assist enough for a 6 def

Good balanced looking team. Whilst I understand the logical of the double spurs midfield, no Kane is a huge risk. Have you consider KDB, he seems the most nailed player at City and runs the show. Only £0.5m more expensive and if he doesn't workout, you can always downgrade to Ali or Eriksen.

Honestly, I would prefer to double up on City offense (KdB & Jesus) but dont know where I can squeeze another 0.5 without sacrificing my selection. If only I can confirm which 5.5 Man Utd defender is nailed. Any suggestion?

    Can't sleep. Too many decisions.

I've been without Spurs since Trippier injury, and that is my biggest fear. My plan is to get them in after GW4.

    Currently on:

    De Gea (Elliot)
Daniels - Valencia - Bertrand (Mee) (Suttner)
Zaha - KDB - Willian - Xhaka (Carroll)
    Lukaku - Jesus - Firmino

Ye he is. But with Ramsey out he will make the important passes from CM + some set pieces. Think it is very likely Leicester will be under heavy siege, and Stoke away offers the same. Would love Laca, but can't afford him, and i am not 100% sure on the Kola/Bellerin/Chamberlain rotation.

Punt on Xhaka is quite risky IMO since he is not that offensive
Maybe once in a while he will give us a long shot screamer, so who knows.

Thanks. You might be right. Problem is, that i want that midfielder spot to deliver in GW 1 and 2. Willian vs Spurs GW2 and Zaha vs Pool GW2. You can still play them, but Xhaka (with Mee rdy to jump in week 2) gives me options.

I think Lukaka will be very profitable, so any team from the off (given Utd fixtures) has to be worked up 'with' lukaka.

That's just my option thought (if it helps)

If you can afford it probably just about. I've switched Cedric to Yoshida for now to eliminate the doubt

no. He was only 2 assist and 2 goals better than cedric over last season. Cedric does twice the no of tackles per game than bertrand. Bertrand is only a little better in terms of blocks and interception(per game). Cedric fares better in terms of key passes. Disclaimer: This data is my own research.

This is me. I like it because the punts are largely nailed to start (mili, mounie and I think Danilo will play most games). The Def 4.0 quandary is going to rumble on though:
        Forster Elliot
        Kola Danilo Daniels (Mee/Dunk, Rosenoir)
        KDB Erikssen Salah Mili (Tarroll)
        Lukaku Jesus Mounie.

Thoughts and criticisms please!! Good luck to you all

The Mili punt is nice, v underrated player, squeeze in Kane for Jesus as u already have kdb? And maybe William for Erikson?

Can someone please tell me the hype for Jesus? Yes he was banging them in at a good rate last year but as far as I know he will be sharing the goals between him and Aguero, too pricey for someone who is only gonna share goals and assists. Y not a lone striker like Kane?

2.0 less for a start. He is the standout 10.5 for me. City are going to start like a train

          It's a bit of a distraction,
that way of thinking. There isn't a predetermined number of goals per game which must be divided out, there is no reason that Jesus can't add more creativity than a replacement player and so create the extra chances for him, or others, to finish.

Won't u always have a conundrum choosing him or aguero tho? Less stress to choose a lone striker who u know can bang in 20+ like kane

        DDG
        Darmian/Danilo/Yoshida
        KDB/Alli/Willian/JWP
        Luka/Jesus/Austin

        Elliot/Suttner/Mee/Carroll

0.5m in Bank. Thinking upgrading Danilo to Kola after GW5 (maybe earlier depending when Mendy comes back). Also Austin to Chica.

Any thoughts on downgrading Yoshida to Francis? (Bou, Bur, Bri rotation would be nice)

5th mid for 6 mill? Sounds expensive for a 5th imo.

Please RMT! I have 0.5 ITB so can upgrade.

        De Gea - Elliot
        Kolasinac - Bertrand - Cedric/Yoshida - Mee - Long
De Bruyne - Salah - Redmond - Milivojevic - Carroll
        Kane - Lukaku - Robriguez

Where should I use the extra 0.5?

        Thanks!
