In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to its most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet (for defenders).

As the award is dished out by a match reporter and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last four season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts-MoTM %
Eden Hazard36925%
Philippe Coutinho28932%
Alexis Sanchez36925%
Wilfried Zaha34721%
Harry Kane29724%
Kevin De Bruyne33515%
Raheem Sterling29517%
Ross Barkley32516%
Marc Albrighton29517%
Diego Costa35514%
Sergio Aguero25520%
Zlatan Ibrahimovic27519%

Here are a few points to note:

Seven midfielders and five forwards make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.

Eden Hazard has now topped the MoTM charts in three out of the last four seasons.

Philippe Coutinho has the highest starts to MoTM ratio and so possibly would have topped the total MoTM awards last year if not for injury.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is generally made up of expensive players from the top sides.

Flair appears to be a theme. Aside maybe from Marc Albrighton, the remaining players are known for their showmanship.

Position % of total MoTM awards by season

13/1414/1515/1616/17Total
Goalkeeper6%8%6%6%6.4%
Defender15%13%13%18%14.7%
Midfielder52%52%58%52%53.8%
Forward27%27%23%24%25.1%

Over the last four seasons the consistency here is almost frightening – midfielders dominate while forwards also claim a healthy piece of the pie.

Considering that most teams only field one forward, it does make their tally all the more appealing, however.

Defenders made a slight jump in 16/17, possibly due to the success of wingbacks. If this trend continues expect a slight increase in this area once again.

This Season’s Benefactors

So let’s try to predict a few of the players likely to gain from awards for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports Focus article.

Podcast and Weekly Article

I’ll be talking through the week’s action and upcoming plans with FFS posters Buffrey and Lewis on our regular podcast – the latest episode can be found here.

We also have the dedicated RMT community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams. Those looking to get involved should click this link.

Fantasy Football Scout League

We have already set up our Fantasy Football Scout League and, after winning the League of Leagues for each of the last four seasons, we’re looking to defend our crown in 2017/18.

Get your teams in – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8300422.

So what do other people, your friends, nearest and dearest think about fantasy football, and in particular your addiction to it?

My partner is very understanding; she totally gets it, the geekery of it all, the interaction between friends in response to real, live events that are unfolding -hopefully- independently from the game itself, the constant gambling, of trying to crack the code (without wrecking your marriage and losing your home, probably). She totally sees what I get from it. But this isn't how everyone feels about it and when you're chatting to people about what you enjoy and after they've been banging on about their PhD in decorating corpses or some ridiculous, esoteric nonsense for about an hour and you decide to drop that you spend a significant portion of your time playing a game with 'fantasy' in the title, well. I've had a number of people either burst out laughing immediately, or crack out the smirk once i've explained to them what it's all about.

So what's going on, is it ruining your marriage? Is your significant other preparing themselves to not see you for 9 months. Do you have to go to the shed? Do you have to put up with endless references in the pub to that 'Dungeons and Dragons' or 'Hero Quest' little game you play with your buddies?

Personally I just try to make sure my friends all play FF - it's easier that way...

My other half gets it. She knows I and all my mates love sport and am a bit nerdy. We play a cash ML with a decent pot and have a large trophy for the season winner, engraved with previous champions. When I win a month I like to tell her "Baby, your man is a winner". She melts for her champion...then asks how much I won.

I tell her "Baby, we're gonna eat chinese and drink wine"

When 3 pm arrives on a Saturday she leaves the house to give her champion the space he needs. The world is in its natural order.

We have played a draft game for about 15 years where about a half dozen close friends do our own auction and use the players we buy within the framework of the telegraph game. So yeah, we have a replica trophy that now has about 15 names on! One day we'll be dead and people's children will have a trophy with their dad's names on, either that or it'll be in the tip

      Not good.

The nadir is over Christmas when we like to go away (our annual holiday when it's freezing here). Last year as an example - we were in Miami, however I couldn't resist following the scores while we were out and about.

      I need:
      (a) clubs to have a winter break
      (b) O2 to abandon their daily capping abroad charges so it's too expensive for me to check.

      (c) of the Mrs. understanding is impossible.

My wife doesn't like it. She finds it useless (its only a game), taking up far too much time, hates me always checking the phone and so on. A few years back she decided to play along and make a team. She did alright, but it only made her more firm in her believe. Now we agree to disagree. Each weekend she curses the game, but as she knows how much I like the game, it is sort of accepted.

My dad plays and is hyper competitive until about Christmas when he claims "it's all luck anyway".

My brother laughs at how nerdy it is on his way out to Comic Con.

As for my other family members. Young daughters can't understand why I play such a "rubbish" game on my phone which doesn't do anything.

My wife is cool with it, I spend a fair bit of time on the website but only at work when I am between jobs. Costs me £12.50 a season, last season I won a £100 voucher from FFS, so I am in profit. I don't gamble any real money on any form of Fantasy Football, the fact that FPL is free and lasts for most of the year is what attracts me to the game. And let's face it, you can do as much number crunching as you like, it is still 60% strategy/skill and 40% luck.

I have a small group of friends who play, although one has given up because his wife gives him such a hard time about how much time he spends on it, that and he never ever wins. It's only me or another guy out of our group of 7 or 8 who ever win it, so they other guys talk a big game at this stage of the season, however the cream rises to the top. I like having this outlet to talk to people about it, because most of those guys have no idea who Tom Carroll is as you can bet he wont be in any of their teams.

Got my younger brother hooked a while ago so main source of banter/reviewing decisions/GW scores in REAL LIFE is with him. Got my Auntie and her son (my cousin) involved for a few seasons, they are football fans so its easier. My dad would probably play too but here's more a Pools kind of guy. Have a few friends who play, but mainly catch up via FaceBook on Fantasy Football goings on but its infrequent.

Like many of you my Missus isn't into it at all so Saturday mornings - the weekend is the only time I get to see my daughter and wife at a breakfast table as I leave house before they get up on week days - so those deadlines are a 'mare if on the deadline decisions are needed to be made.

Also constantly checking updates and mood changing when out and about during any game of the GW was an issue for her, (still an issue for me!) but she's learned to ignore it!

TBH when talking about Fantasty Football in public, don't ever get that nerdy, geek type feed back at all. In fact someone commented that its better to play this than gamble with real money!

I have a couple of friends whose partners I know consider the game to be completely disposable and of no merit, an unnecessary waste of time and energy to be pruned from their partners lives if at all possible. It's understandable i guess, as they have families, and commitments like step-families they hate and things to be putting up like a shelf or whatever. Everyone needs a bit of fun though, otherwise you go mad like Arthur Fowler and steal the charity christmas fund.

TBH if any partner of mine had that problem they would be rapidly joining my steadily composting pile of failed relationships

      GF Brother
      Brother's GF

I play so many diffferent format fantasy footy games.
Ive converted some mates into playing, watching games down the pub make it more interesting when u have players involved.

Not a problem we have a family fantasy league set up 4 years ago with 23 members of extended family playing it and most have now become nearly as obsessed as me including the Mrs who I beat in our cup final last year !

We run a league and two cups each year and host an end of season BBQ which means we all end up meeting at least once a year with plenty of banter in between.

Have a few friends who aren't into it and do feel sorry for them on Saturday mornings when they have a tedious weekend ahead doing DIY or shopping and don't have the thrill of seeing if their eleven good men a true can do the business.

Pogba starts? But I agree, he doesn't look any better with Matic. Potential is there but risky.

    Points predictions for GW1-2:

    Kane:
    GW 1 (Newcastle): 2
    GW2 (Chelsea): 2

    Jesus:
    GW1 (Brighton): 9
    GW2 (Everton): 12

I will start with Jesus instead of Kane, save 2FT to GW3 when Spurs meets Burnley at home.

Easy downgrade from Alonso, Alli, Zaha/Willian, DeBruyne or Lukaku.

    Who's with me?

Well I do have Jesus and no Kane, so I guess I am with you. Small caveat is that I won't be getting Kane unless a) he starts scoring big time and b) his underlying stats after 3/4 weeks look very very good.

    Foster (Elliot)
    Alexander-Arnold--Cedric--Ake--(Mariappa--Mee)
    Salah--Ward-Prowse--De Bruyne--Zaha--(Caroll)
    Firmino--Kane--Lukaku

    A) Stay with that
    B) Change Ward-Prowse--Kane to Willian--Jesus
    or
    C) Change Ward-Prowse--Zaha--Firmino to Ritchie--Loftus-Cheek--Jesus (Carrol - start as 4 mid every week)
