It’s almost like turn-based Fantasy Football.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 17.8% ownership will be more than happy with the night’s work from the Frenchman.

His goal and spritely performance was enough to provide comfort and early re-assurance for those who snubbed one or more of Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus.

Lacazette scored one, he perhaps could and should have got more. He certainly did enough to indicate that he can justify the 10.5 Fantasy Premier League fee.

His non-owners must acknowledge that Lacazette showed promise, but they will also know that there are more turns to play out.

Jesus will go on Saturday, backed by a 13.6% ownership, with 30.7% of those handing him the captaincy for a trip to Brighton.

Then it will be Kane and Lukaku on Sunday, with the 49% owned Manchester United striker backed by over a million armbands.

Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, Kane will be part of 37.9% of squads and with 55% of his owners trusting him as their skipper.

Those captaincy percentages are telling.

For while Lacazette’s promising performance might already cause some to consider the saving from Lukaku or Kane, it’s significant that the pair are both backed by more than half of their Gameweek 1 owners with the armband.

Lacazette earned the faith of just 29.1% of his managers, with the majority doubtless turning to one of the two big-hitters.

And therein lies the difference.

The Arsenal striker was impressive, but there is plenty of ground to make up before we consider him at the same level as Kane and Lukaku as a captain.

For starters, we will want to assess the impact Olivier Giroud’s dramatic winner.

Once again he sprung from the Arsenal bench to send Arsene Wenger a message. Once again, as we saw with Alexis Sanchez last season, we will wonder if Giroud will eventually gain starts as the central striker, pushing Lacezette into a support role.

To an extent, we have the same worry with Jesus. Sergio Aguero’s presence could eventually shift the Brazilian to a flank or behind the lone striker at times.

How that will impact either striker is unknown. What we do know is that this is not a concern with Lukaku or Kane.

So while Lacazette convinced and demonstrated that he will have a say in our seasons, early talk of Arsenal’s new signing being elevated to their level seems premature.

He has the pair on their toes, and they will need to take their turn to shine.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Can anyone point me to the origin of the theory that high ownership players drop faster in price?

Only theory is they have more ownership that means more players own him and more people sell them due to it. So a player drops fast in price. Coz more active transfers out.

But if he's got higher ownership then it will take more sales to get to the same drop point, which is why I want to see of there was any logic behind this theory or if people have just misunderstood the transfer market mechanics and it's become an "FFS comments fact".

One factor here is injuries/suspensions and the fact that if you're flagged I've read that the fall/rise point automatically is higher. Like Zlatan last season, fell a lot faster in early gw (dry spell) than later (injury)

Hehe. I just have a suspicion there's been some dodgy theory circulating here this summer, but I don't want to jump straight to outright criticism of it if some significant study has been done which showed the theory has unexpected legs.

Yes, that's always been my argument. I have no idea of the science behind it, but if a highly owned player who everyone expects to play does not play, his value will plummet faster than that of a lesser owned player who does not play, as they were likely fodder anyway

FPL Towers have their formula - problem is they change it every season (or some seasons), so what worked last year is not necessarily how it will work this year. That's why those price predictor sites failed so badly in the past at the start of a season.

This I know. What I want to know is if anyone advanced a coherent argument as to why higher ownership players would fall more quickly in price because, based on my experience of the transfer system mechanics, no one should be telling other players this at the start of the season.

Or rather, I should have said I understand what you are saying, but the key problem the prediction sites had a couple of years back was not so much a change in formula but the hiding of a key data source.

I have the same feeling about the common fact that there are less clean sheets for the top teams at the start of the season. I went back through the last 4 seasons (912 games) and counted the clean sheets for the top 6 finishers. I did counts for, overall clean sheets, clean sheets in games against promoted teams and then games against the bottom ten finishers. I then counted just the first 10 games and compared the clean sheet rates for the season against the first 10 games. They were practically identical in every category.

It follows the theory, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. About 40K for price fall so if you have 40K to lose, you can fall, if you have 30K... you can never lose 40K

Thanks Diva. I know (roughly) how it works. I meant more that one sane voice of dissention to an unproven myth that's been repeated ad nauseam all summer would make a good hot topic. If people don't see this page they'll just assume the high ownership thing is gospel truth.

On the flip side, making it a hot topic may actually attract an answer with a convincing argument for the theory.

It is much more complex than that. It is really based on the interaction how many active managers own the player and how many casuals vs hardcore players own the player.

Active managers - obviously if a player is owned more by active players their price will have more variance. This sometimes gets conflated with total ownership.
Casuals vs hardcore - Has an affect in specific circumstances, e.g. casuals are more likely to sell a 4m defender for a hit if not playing whereas a hardcore player will wait for their WC.

This is my point. Too often I've seen people say: "X has high ownership, he will drop in price more quickly." In a start of season scenario, it's not the total ownership percentage but whether the player has an unusually high active or inactive ownership that should matter.

I haven't seen any study this summer that discusses that, but I haven't always been the most active on here during that time so I was asking if I had missed something.

My theory is that mid-priced bandwagons are most vulnerable. Low ownership originally that shifts to high ownership and then back to low ie. Philips last season.
Aguero was 13m last season and held his value even when people were shipping. I see this as happening because he was in so many dead/casual teams that kept him through injury/poor form etc.

            You're catching my drift.

The price change dynamics have historically altered when a player is above their original price, but I'm questioning the theory that has been circulating and applied pre-season - i.e. before any player has experienced a price rise.

            1. Andy_Social
              • 13 Years
              8 years, 4 months ago

Look at the start of last season. By GW3 only half a dozen players had had price rises - major bandwagons like Ibra IIRC, but scores of players had lost 0.1 in value. What the explanation for that? It would be good to know now as any repeat will be imminent.

Because a diverse ownership is converging on a narrow stock of players.

In order to buy a top price £12m player you must either swap like for like or do two transfers to raise the extra couple of million you will need. thus managers will sell a diverse bunch of players to buy one specific player they are all focussed on.

Its partly due to the capping of 0.3.

X managers sell 10 different players (Where x is the number needed for a price fall of 0.1 per player )

Those 10X managers then buy the same player, his price rise is capped at 0.3 so you have an overall player price fall by 1m but also an increase by 0.3. Total combined price of those 11 players therefore fell by 0.7

    8. @persecuted_by_mods
        8 years, 4 months ago

Good question, and glad someone asked it instead of blindly following. My reasoning is thus, high ownership = player expected by most to do well, if he flops it's easy to jettison him (more than likely he's relatively expensive too)

A low ownership player is usually a differential or fodder player, in either case him not doing well doesn't necessarily mean it's urgent to ship him

        1. Diva
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

I see your reasoning and that may be one factor: expectations versus reality. There may be other factors too, such as who owns that player.

Let's take Wayne Rooney and his 15.5% ownership as an example. What proportion of that 15.5% are managers who actively manage their team through the year and thought Rooney's on for a big year? If the answer is "many" and then he doesn't play this weekend, we're likely to see a big portion of his ownership disappear and a price drop follow.

What if, however, Rooney's owners are primarily people with a vague interest in football, who were talked into creating an FPL team in July by their mates and have now forgotten about it? If they simply picked Rooney because they knew the name, but now their team is going to sit inactive for the rest of the season, then sales in Rooney are likely to be a lot slower.

Are you suggesting that inactives are already identified. Most people, especially the casuals only joined this week. Presumably it'll take a couple of weeks if not logging on before they are classes as inactive

            1. Diva
              • 11 Years
              8 years, 4 months ago

They don't need to be identified as inactive, they just need to be inactive.

We know, based on past experience, that there will likely be some managers who will do nothing with their teams all season.

If those managers as a group are unusually predisposed to a particular group of players then it may offer those players a touch more protection against a drop.

Now, no one will be able to identify this year's inactive managers for several weeks. So no one can tell you with certainty: "X is owned by an unusually high proportion of dead teams, therefore a price drop is less likely in the event that they fail to perform."

Inversely, they can't look at this year's data yet and tell you: "Y is disproportionately owned by highly active managers, therefore a price drop is more likely in the event that they fail to perform."

What it might be possible to do, if you had gathered the data set together, is go back and identify whether a particular type of player is more predisposed to being highly owned by active or inactive players, and draw a conclusion from that. You may wish to try to apply that conclusion to this season in the hope the pattern will repeat itself.

It may be that such a study identifies, for example, that players with an ownership over, say, 20 percent, are more likely to be owned by active managers. If this was the case (and I'm not saying it is, by the way), then it might be possible to say: "Z has a really high ownership, he's got an increased risk of a quicker price drop."

But I don't recall seeing such a study that would make it possible to argue that. Hence my opening question: can anyone point me to the origin of this theory higher owned players drop faster in price?

Kind of an off-topic question. Do any of you worry that FPL adversely affects how you enjoy the game (and the matches)? Each year I put together a squad (at least partially because it gives me something to do), and each year I immediately regret it once the season starts and I can't just simply sit down and watch a match without thinking about the fantasy implications of everything happening. Unfortunately, by that point I've put in so much time trying to build that GW1 squad that I feel like I've got to stick with it.

I don't know. Just wondered if I was the only one. And you think that I'd just learn and stop playing. But, well, I guess I'm just a bit slow...

Agree with this point but also can't deny when your rival team's player is in your FPL team it can be an uncomfortable trade off. I might give it a break next season. Supporting Utd I mean, love this shit.

I 100% think that FPL impacts the enjoyment of live football. But, luckily the league with the best players (La Liga) is there for us to enjoy without thinking about who assisted who and how many points x player has 😀

Yes but it is too late to do anything about it now Pandora's box has been opened.

I still really enjoy watching football but like yourself it is hard to get the fpl implications out of ones head.

There is only 1 way out by becoming fpl champion and retiring.

I like watching the games from an FPL point of view, not only when my players are involved but scouting other players too. I'm just having fun doing that and it adds some pretty intense moments in a lot of games, that's cool. I'm a United fan and when it comes down to their games I forget all about FPL so I guess I'm not too crazy about the game, just know your limits. But I'm sure addicted and can't see myself spending a season without playing it, would feel so empty haha.

As a United fan, it's been a welcome distraction over the past few seasons as we've floundered in the league. However, if we started to challenge for the title again and it got to the business end of the season, I'm not sure how I'd feel wanting my Captain Kane, Jesus or Hazard to bag a hat-trick. Or God-forbid a Captain Mane or Firmino 😉

I think it makes me enjoy football as a sport a lot more as I know a lot more about the smaller teams and how individual players are performing.

The only downside is cheering on my Man U / Everton players while being a Liverpool supporter.

I definitely wouldn't watch any games outside of Liverpool and maybe the occasional big game if it wasn't for FPL.

Was worried he might not play, but article on here seemed very positive, and when I asked here and on Twitter everyone said it would be Welbeck....Like they had some sort of clue...Numpties

Should have realised Welbeck would get to play against old club.

So took him out for swp, but then the Mail did not have him in line ups so took him out and put Iwobe back in. Was expecting goals, but did not realise he would not be in it.

Terrible message from Wenger. Iwobe was one of best pre season and in shield. He deserved a chance, fact he did not start despite Sanchez out, a big kick in the head. If I was Iwobe I would be wanting transfer

Welbeck playing against his old club? Am I missing something? He's never played for Leicester right?

Alarm bells should probably have been ringing when it became clear that both Ramsey & Özil were in contention to play. Easy to say with the benefit of hindsight.

My thing wth Iwobi is I just don't rate him at all. I know he's young but I can't see him developing into a top 6 team player.

I do agree that Iwobi is a spark, and a solid spark at than. I thought Wenger could go 'safe' with Welbeck and Ozil, but I really thought Iwobi had played himelf to the top of that list while Ozil was a doubt (In preseason and from last season). Wonder if it was tactical in some way.

My favourite 5.5 mid was Walters so it was always an option to watch him in GW1 and decide whether to bring him in for his first good fixture.

The Fourth mid spot a great place to gamble, as it where the best money makers are, no point picking one for long term. Rather than take a risk like that than pick some Two point Charlie.

Having Carroll as back up was One of the reasons, looking forward to seeing him play noow, and you can expect Southampton to lose their clean sheet, lets hope Carroll involved

It's no bother to me. He was a two-week rental from the start for me, and my plan was always to use that spot to jump on the best mid in that bracket who emerges (from Fraser, Ritchie, Ince, Gross, Atsu, etc.).

So this week I get Carroll off the bench, and next week it'll be my fourth defender. It was a risk worth taking, IMO.

Thought he looked really sharp. Took the goal well, involved in all round play, nearly had a second that was well saved by schmeicel, played the full 90, involved in the 2nd goal and It seems that arsenal are likely to score a lot.

I thought he looked dangerous enough. It wasn't comfortable viewing as a non-owner and I think he'll get over 20 goals if he stays fit. As I say above, though, I don't think he can be pushed into the same bracket as Lukaku and Kane so it remains to be seen if the saving can be effective. A long long way to go and it was just one performance.

It all depends on how many Lukaku will get at Utd. Laca could become very popular.

                8 years, 4 months ago

For me the main difference is Lukaku is more nailed. Both are probably on penalties, but I would say Lacazette is more certain to be. In terms of shot production, neither is elite (like Aguero), and both have outperformed xG significantly, making some of us fear regression towards the mean. A positive with Lacazette is that he rotates perfectly with Kane, who is going to be our main captain pick from gameweek 3 onward. It seems to me rotating between a captain from Arsenal and Tottenham would be ideal throughout the season, as they are teams with less rotation than City and United.

Looked ok. Got one and probably should have got another. I think he'll be good for arsenal and will get around 20 goals.

Will have to wait and see how they line up if sanchez comes back. Also, was pushed out wide once giroud came on - and looked quite dangerous in that position.

Wait and see for now me thinks

Good striker but he loves to play Arsenal, always scores and looks dangerous against them. Their defence (or lack of) suits him.

Not saying he won't smash Brighton but it will be interesting to see against more defensive minded teams.

Good enough for me to not want to transfer him out yet, but to continue with my plan to jettison him for Kane for GW3. I truly fear rotation for the central striker role with Giroud and Welbeck in contention, and I think he will end up around the 170 point mark.

Three can be two central strikers in a 3-4-3 formation. So he may well play every game until Wenger thinks he is fatiguing due to the relentless demands of the Prem compared to French football.

I thought he looked great. But then seemed to hide out on the left when Arsenal were seriously under pressure before Giroud turned up and saved them. Should have stayed central and demanded the ball.

Too early to pass a judgement and a lot really depends on what's going to happen in the transfer market. This team is going to create chances and the interplay was neat yesterday. So if he is more efficient than Giroud he should score a lot of goals.

              Still gonna wait and see.

Nice and technical, good finisher, don't think he'd be the main man and drag the team along with him like Sanchez does.

Not a lot of chances for him, but whenever he is presented with one looks like he'll score (great save from Kasper).

Not a members filter but we are bringing in the ability to filter by tags and users. I think it would be wrong to presume that only members make good posts 😉

Don't worry, things calm down now the season has started. We will start looking at HomeCrowd this month.

We;re adding Expected Goals and Prices, then switching attention to HomeCrowd and improving comments.

Things will still go into meltdown when multiple matches are on. There's not much that can be done about that though.

Expected Goals will be brilliant for the stats lovers.

Posts flying is the big big problem in my view. I agree the problem isn't non-members, but I can see why UHAHPAULMCGRATH might see it as the most obvious way of filtering, and reducing the posts/speed.

We need to add some tools and then change the way folk view comments because the pace of comments shouldn't matter. It's not about keeping up, its about viewing what you want to see, no matter when or how quickly it arrives.

If we break away from viewing them as they appear and view discussions by rating or by a certain category, everything changes.

I'm going to look again at how we implement voting as a method of users filtering out discussions.

So for example, if folk voted more for discussions that were not RMT, they could easily filter out all RMT's by just ordering by votes.

It's all about changing the use and behaviour but we have to introduce more features first. My focus and Mat;s will be on this soon and, it will take time, but we will make changes and hopefully improve things.

Completely agree. Reducing the speed/number is more a short term fix within the current system. But I love everything you're saying. Cheers Mark

If this is a wordpress website you can add a plugin that allows you to subscribe to a comment thread! Instead of that "Notify me of replies" checkbox thats defaulted as off for some reason. I miss quite a few replies because I forget to tick that box.

Subscribe to comment thread would engage discussion alot more I think!

We don't use Wordpress comments. The WP comment system was too heavy and just couldn't cope with the volume we had - it often brought the site down back in the old days. Plugins only add to the mess.

This uses our own comments system, so it's our code and we can add what we like. We just haven't had the resource to do it until now.

We'd have filters that would filter out discussions that hadn't received any upvotes.

Of course, we'd soon ban any users who abused this by removing their voting rights. In this way, we'd build up a trusted group of users who would be voting and therefore curating the discussions.

It's all in place, we just need to tweak a few things.

That's the beauty of HomeCrowd, it's our code, we do what we like and add what we need or want.

It's top because, within the thread, replies have some upvotes.

We can tweak this, we can reduce the impact of replies on the discussion rating.

The other thing we can do is to give some users votes more weight. So if mods vote up a discussion, it gets a higher rating. In this way, we can easily raise discussions and curate.

Then we'd encourage people to use them

If we had a filter for only show upvoted discussions for example, how could folk legitimately gripe about having to wade through RMTs?

In one click, they wouldn't have to. They probably would but it would be a bit unfair when we give them the facility to fix it.

The plan would be to form a group of users who have higher voting rights or voting weights and encourage them to vote up discussions. Only users we trust to identify good content would be in that group and their votes would carry more weight.

How could one have dialogue in this fashion without a notification of reply option? Its good for reading over old posts but not dialogue. Hot topics address this to a certain extent, but does it go far enough?

This is a good point. It's very difficult to have a conversation about the content on here outside of the "DeadZone" in June because the pages turn too quickly and people don't see replies.

Second off-topic question of the night. Does anyone enjoy the build-up to GW1 more than the rest of the season? For me, there is something really pleasurable about tinkering with a squad and living in a realm of possibility. You get to scheme and research and guess and hope, but then the season kicks off and...I don't know. It's just the grind of the season. I just know that as excited as I am for the season to start, it's sad to see the end of the squad selection/guessing/hoping that comes with it.

I'm relieved in a way. Once the season starts, there is a decrease in the speculations and we just cut to the chase. No more who'll score more posts is also a good thing.

I enjoyed the ending the most - I was tired of it all, but I had a good/lucky season, so was looking forward to that much needed r&r. The mix of it all was beautiful.

Nah, not for me. What I do enjoy is analysing the data and trying to make sense of all the numbers. In GW1 I have very few numbers to work with and I feel like I am 'guessing' a lot of the time. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I like the idea of solving problems with my team each week and I like watching matches, analysing the important information provided to come up with a decision that will help my team in the long run. In GW1, I feel like there is too much luck involved.

No i actually find the build up to a new season over hyped and quite drawn out.

I enjoy the weekly opera of fpl and really like the game around Christmas and double game weeks when the games are coming tick and fast and we are tested to our limits.

My favorite time in any gw is just before the deadline when all us managers are filled with blind optimism about our squads and dreams of glory before the cold reality of the gw sets in.

I enjoy the tinkering but there's nothing quite so sweet as having a massive week, where everything goes right. Of course, then there's the other 37 weeks...

Well not really. I genuinely only started to put a team together on Monday and reviewed it heavily on Thursday and Friday.

I find it very tedious because you don't know what's gonna happen and have to hope for the best. Plus I always early WC.

              Last Man Standing Update

              Top score = 24 (2 teams), 3rd highest on 19.
              Safety score would be 1

9 games + autosubs to go.

Until the league tables update you can find the current scores of league members using this - https://anewpla.net/fpl/league/live.php You just need to click the 'live points' column after it loads to sort by most points.

A lot of people spend quite a bit of time here, contribute and help others and make this place a community.

His prospects are the same as any other midfielder that usually go for 7 or 8m

                    Yet he's priced at 5.5

                            I triple captained Rooney.

I manage two teams my own personal team, and my gf and dad's EPL accounts I get some of the players they want like Lukaku and I can experiment a bit with Xhaka and Rooney triple captain

I made posts about him and he's in one of the two teams.

Well just because I didn't select him in my personal team doesn't mean I don't rate him or recommended him.

I can't have them all TM I rate KDB, Alli Eriksen Salah but I can't fit everyone in.

I'll still recommend them to everyone and Xhaka is no exception

His price is certainly not the issue. He just wasn't good enough for your team. I can pick another 15 players in my 2nd team too.

Honestly he is. If Hazard was fit Xhaka would be in and Fabregas would become Hazard.

                                    Just how things panned out.

I don't like to use the term second team and it's really just a family account and my LMS team isn't the one I use for FPL.

Better to go by what I say in my posts and ignore the semantics of things. If for example I was badmouthing Hazard the whole season and then you see him in my team yes that's dodgy but in this case no I don't see a problem personally

All this Xhaka hype is funny.

Just listen to me for the season guys and you will be alright 🙂 here are a few point to help you all out

.Rooney will have a great season pick him up when the fixtures clear up

.David Silva is another De Bruyne

. Kane will have another great season and Joe Hart is the best 4.0 option

                Peace!

                @Fpl Virgin

I drew a lot of inspiration from your argument to go with a strong back 5 earlier in the summer when i was picking my team.

No pressure or anything it was me that picked the team and i will fall on my sword if it goes belly up but i thought your points were very logical.

                  Thanks Ogie 🙂

That means a lot coming from someone who finished 12th last season.

Here is the article in case anyone wants to read it http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/19/premium-defenders-v-mid-price-midfielders/

It's clear that premium defenders outscore equivalent priced mids, but it's just getting over the psychological hurdle of investing heavily in the back.

There is a possibility we could see the demise of the 3-4-3 this season.

5 at the back here too. It was an easy decision for me, though not because I like the formation, but the players available kept forcing me to pick it.

Me too, although after championing 5-2-3 for weeks i compromised to a 5-3-2 in the end.

5 points in the bag already form Kol, still looking good!

                  Whatever combo had Kane.

Personally I have Kane + Mané. Or Kané if you will. Add in Sané and you've got a cool triumvirate.

Heard there is a big crack down on people entering multi teams this year at FPL. Special investigating teams and everything, moles, spies and informants operating in forums, the works.

Not that anyone here has to worry.

Quite right as well imo. It's not fair on people who play the game properly. Also, I don't see how people can get enjoyment off other teams they make. I wouldn't get the same buzz unless my main team was the one getting he points.

Is Jonty the Yoda of FPL? Does he have a working crystal ball?

This is what he said on June 29th:

"We swerved Arsenal v Liverpool entirely in our XI at the start of last season. Too tough to call we thought. But with a 4-3 scoreline to the Reds, with Coutinho excelling, perhaps we should be backing players in tough to call clashes more often.

Could a Leicester attacker against Arsenal away prosper next season? This very well may be next season’s high scoring opening day clash."

I have 2 Southampton defenders and Forster myself.

I felt better about when it when i seen a great manager like Luke was thinking along the same lines.

Extreamly dangerous strategy but on the same hand there could be big rewards out of it.

You did really well last year Ogie and I think you were one of the first to triple up on spurs round the Christmas period...I maybe wrong.

Personally I don't mind tripling up on attackers but defenders scare me as one goal and basically all their points are gone. What do you think?

You're looking at one game. Xhaka is a card magnet who scored 6 goals in 108 games for Borussia M'. 2 in 33 for Arsenal.

Ozil will be up there all season as one of the highest assisters in the prem and chips in with a few goals too.

Mmhmm ok get Ozil then lol. I'll stick with his better value equivalent. Xhaka steps up when Ozil the magician vanishes

I'm not getting him. Better options at the same price but you just sound smug about Xhaka when in reality Ozil will outscore him by very minimum 50 points this season
