It’s almost like turn-based Fantasy Football.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 17.8% ownership will be more than happy with the night’s work from the Frenchman.

His goal and spritely performance was enough to provide comfort and early re-assurance for those who snubbed one or more of Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus.

Lacazette scored one, he perhaps could and should have got more. He certainly did enough to indicate that he can justify the 10.5 Fantasy Premier League fee.

His non-owners must acknowledge that Lacazette showed promise, but they will also know that there are more turns to play out.

Jesus will go on Saturday, backed by a 13.6% ownership, with 30.7% of those handing him the captaincy for a trip to Brighton.

Then it will be Kane and Lukaku on Sunday, with the 49% owned Manchester United striker backed by over a million armbands.

Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, Kane will be part of 37.9% of squads and with 55% of his owners trusting him as their skipper.

Those captaincy percentages are telling.

For while Lacazette’s promising performance might already cause some to consider the saving from Lukaku or Kane, it’s significant that the pair are both backed by more than half of their Gameweek 1 owners with the armband.

Lacazette earned the faith of just 29.1% of his managers, with the majority doubtless turning to one of the two big-hitters.

And therein lies the difference.

The Arsenal striker was impressive, but there is plenty of ground to make up before we consider him at the same level as Kane and Lukaku as a captain.

For starters, we will want to assess the impact Olivier Giroud’s dramatic winner.

Once again he sprung from the Arsenal bench to send Arsene Wenger a message. Once again, as we saw with Alexis Sanchez last season, we will wonder if Giroud will eventually gain starts as the central striker, pushing Lacezette into a support role.

To an extent, we have the same worry with Jesus. Sergio Aguero’s presence could eventually shift the Brazilian to a flank or behind the lone striker at times.

How that will impact either striker is unknown. What we do know is that this is not a concern with Lukaku or Kane.

So while Lacazette convinced and demonstrated that he will have a say in our seasons, early talk of Arsenal’s new signing being elevated to their level seems premature.

He has the pair on their toes, and they will need to take their turn to shine.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Indeed. Unless he gets the LWB, can see him getting dropped. Even with that role, I can't see Arsenal keeping enough clean sheets this season sadly. Maybe worth a look when we have more cash

Tbf all three who played in central defence are not defenders. They could improve a lot when Mustafi and Koscienly are back.

I'm sorry but as a defender he was poor at best. Looks great going forward, but my word does he leave Arsenal exposed. I'd be pulling my hair out if I was the defensive coach

I actually disagree. If he was hoping to be top GW1 he would have picked 3 players from Arsenal and Leicester. Plus he has £20m in the bank. He would have upgraded to Ozil etc.

I think he was trying to pick a team where everyone plays but you have to get the least amount of points.

Just think that X factor will be gone. Unless Salah can be the man this season he may have to be. Mane is injury prone as well. A pool team without Coutinho and Mane isn't getting champions league football.

But there's no release clause, he's just signed a 5 year contract and Liverpool don't have time to find a suitable replacement. They don't have to sell.

          He'll go next year.

Vardy looked super hungry. The Vardy of 2 seasons ago. But Arsenal did play to his strengths.

Very very bad. Poor challenging for aerial duels, but you've got to remember that Holding was the only recognised centre half playing so you kind of expect it until Kocsielny comes back.

Vardy, and Leicester looked very good. A decent season looms. They still have some tricky fixtures to deal with so I'll be monitoring the likes of Vardy, Albrighton, Maguire and see if Nacho gets more game time.

Arsenal defence was terrible but it was makeshift and should settle down. Holding was well out of his depth (the cheap option) but Kol looked 'a tank'.

Is Jonty the Yoda of FPL? Does he have a working crystal ball?

This is what he said on June 29th:

"We swerved Arsenal v Liverpool entirely in our XI at the start of last season. Too tough to call we thought. But with a 4-3 scoreline to the Reds, with Coutinho excelling, perhaps we should be backing players in tough to call clashes more often.

Could a Leicester attacker against Arsenal away prosper next season? This very well may be next season’s high scoring opening day clash."

One of the key aspects of a 3 man defence in the central guy being an excellent reader of the game.

For Arsenal, that could and should be Per, with Kosc and Monreal/Holding/Mustafi flanking him. I'd even give Chambers a go. Per's lack of pace should be much less of an issue in a 3, and he is as close as they have to an organiser/leader type too

    1. Waxys

      Wenger is lining that up.

He's obviously very fond of Per.

I'm looking forward to having Per as a cheap Arsenal defender once he's confirmed to be nailed

True. Chelsea go the other way though with the central one (David Luiz) pushing out and up the pitch a lot, with the two either side squeezing in to cover him. Couldn't see Per doing that

      1. Respect My Authoritah
        • 12 Years

Yep. But Luiz reads the game well, that's the key. He's flamboyant and good on the ball, that's just a bonus. A poor man's Toby if you will

Matt Ritchie seems to be the another Wijnaldum. Look at last season:

    - 14 goals at home, 2 goals away
    - 7 assists at home, 3 assists away

His 15/16 season in the PL with Bournemouth backs this up:

    - 4 goals at home, 0 goals away
    - 4 assists at home, 2 assists away

Is 6.0 too expensive to rotate?

Look at that away record though. Not sure I would be comfortable starting him in 19 away games. 2 away goals & 5 assists in the last two seasons, one season being in the Championship..

He's in my team, but certainly not a season keeper (unless he starts killing it)

Once Newcastles kind fixtures are out of the way, once TV has built a bit, once some unexpected cheap midfield hero emerges, he'll be out on his ear 🙂

Newcastle are no longer the big boys rolling into town like they were in the Championship. Teams won't give them that much respect this season and that means more space for the likes of Ritchie, who was seen as one of the Championship's best players. Newcastle will adapt their style of play to defend and hit in the break, hence the stats from last season may give a false picture for this year.

      1. Whazza
        • 14 Years

Unfortunately he doesn't have the pace. He is a home boy though, 81% attacking returns at home in the last two seasons.

Killed it in the Championship 14/15 too (32 attacking returns) -
only to manage 10 in the Prem.

You're looking at one game. Xhaka is a card magnet who scored 6 goals in 108 games for Borussia M'. 2 in 33 for Arsenal.

Ozil will be up there all season as one of the highest assisters in the prem and chips in with a few goals too.

Its because you keep on promoting your picks which obviously arent good enough or didnt persuade you enough to be in your main team. So they dont matter. Its easy to have five teams and go for likely punts in everyone of em, just keep them quiet, they dont matter. No idea why you didnt have Xhaka in your main team if you were so sold on him.
