It’s almost like turn-based Fantasy Football.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 17.8% ownership will be more than happy with the night’s work from the Frenchman.

His goal and spritely performance was enough to provide comfort and early re-assurance for those who snubbed one or more of Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus.

Lacazette scored one, he perhaps could and should have got more. He certainly did enough to indicate that he can justify the 10.5 Fantasy Premier League fee.

His non-owners must acknowledge that Lacazette showed promise, but they will also know that there are more turns to play out.

Jesus will go on Saturday, backed by a 13.6% ownership, with 30.7% of those handing him the captaincy for a trip to Brighton.

Then it will be Kane and Lukaku on Sunday, with the 49% owned Manchester United striker backed by over a million armbands.

Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, Kane will be part of 37.9% of squads and with 55% of his owners trusting him as their skipper.

Those captaincy percentages are telling.

For while Lacazette’s promising performance might already cause some to consider the saving from Lukaku or Kane, it’s significant that the pair are both backed by more than half of their Gameweek 1 owners with the armband.

Lacazette earned the faith of just 29.1% of his managers, with the majority doubtless turning to one of the two big-hitters.

And therein lies the difference.

The Arsenal striker was impressive, but there is plenty of ground to make up before we consider him at the same level as Kane and Lukaku as a captain.

For starters, we will want to assess the impact Olivier Giroud’s dramatic winner.

Once again he sprung from the Arsenal bench to send Arsene Wenger a message. Once again, as we saw with Alexis Sanchez last season, we will wonder if Giroud will eventually gain starts as the central striker, pushing Lacezette into a support role.

To an extent, we have the same worry with Jesus. Sergio Aguero’s presence could eventually shift the Brazilian to a flank or behind the lone striker at times.

How that will impact either striker is unknown. What we do know is that this is not a concern with Lukaku or Kane.

So while Lacazette convinced and demonstrated that he will have a say in our seasons, early talk of Arsenal’s new signing being elevated to their level seems premature.

He has the pair on their toes, and they will need to take their turn to shine.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yeh. To be fair the last player to occupy that 5th mid slot was Iwobi. I finally ended up with the player whom I put in on day one - Carroll.

Only theory is they have more ownership that means more players own him and more people sell them due to it. So a player drops fast in price. Coz more active transfers out.

But if he's got higher ownership then it will take more sales to get to the same drop point, which is why I want to see of there was any logic behind this theory or if people have just misunderstood the transfer market mechanics and it's become an "FFS comments fact".

One factor here is injuries/suspensions and the fact that if you're flagged I've read that the fall/rise point automatically is higher. Like Zlatan last season, fell a lot faster in early gw (dry spell) than later (injury)

Yes, flags do affect falls, but that's not so relevant for the argument I'm specifically questioning here.

Yes, that's always been my argument. I have no idea of the science behind it, but if a highly owned player who everyone expects to play does not play, his value will plummet faster than that of a lesser owned player who does not play, as they were likely fodder anyway

FPL Towers have their formula - problem is they change it every season (or some seasons), so what worked last year is not necessarily how it will work this year. That's why those price predictor sites failed so badly in the past at the start of a season.

This I know. What I want to know is if anyone advanced a coherent argument as to why higher ownership players would fall more quickly in price because, based on my experience of the transfer system mechanics, no one should be telling other players this at the start of the season.

Or rather, I should have said I understand what you are saying, but the key problem the prediction sites had a couple of years back was not so much a change in formula but the hiding of a key data source.

I have the same feeling about the common fact that there are less clean sheets for the top teams at the start of the season. I went back through the last 4 seasons (912 games) and counted the clean sheets for the top 6 finishers. I did counts for, overall clean sheets, clean sheets in games against promoted teams and then games against the bottom ten finishers. I then counted just the first 10 games and compared the clean sheet rates for the season against the first 10 games. They were practically identical in every category.

It follows the theory, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. About 40K for price fall so if you have 40K to lose, you can fall, if you have 30K... you can never lose 40K

Thanks Diva. I know (roughly) how it works. I meant more that one sane voice of dissention to an unproven myth that's been repeated ad nauseam all summer would make a good hot topic. If people don't see this page they'll just assume the high ownership thing is gospel truth.

On the flip side, making it a hot topic may actually attract an answer with a convincing argument for the theory.

It is much more complex than that. It is really based on the interaction how many active managers own the player and how many casuals vs hardcore players own the player.

Active managers - obviously if a player is owned more by active players their price will have more variance. This sometimes gets conflated with total ownership.
Casuals vs hardcore - Has an affect in specific circumstances, e.g. casuals are more likely to sell a 4m defender for a hit if not playing whereas a hardcore player will wait for their WC.

      1. Diva

This is my point. Too often I've seen people say: "X has high ownership, he will drop in price more quickly." In a start of season scenario, it's not the total ownership percentage but whether the player has an unusually high active or inactive ownership that should matter.

I haven't seen any study this summer that discusses that, but I haven't always been the most active on here during that time so I was asking if I had missed something.

My theory is that mid-priced bandwagons are most vulnerable. Low ownership originally that shifts to high ownership and then back to low ie. Philips last season.
Aguero was 13m last season and held his value even when people were shipping. I see this as happening because he was in so many dead/casual teams that kept him through injury/poor form etc.

            You're catching my drift.

The price change dynamics have historically altered when a player is above their original price, but I'm questioning the theory that has been circulating and applied pre-season - i.e. before any player has experienced a price rise.

            1. Andy_Social
              • 14 Years

Look at the start of last season. By GW3 only half a dozen players had had price rises - major bandwagons like Ibra IIRC, but scores of players had lost 0.1 in value. What the explanation for that? It would be good to know now as any repeat will be imminent.

Because a diverse ownership is converging on a narrow stock of players.

In order to buy a top price £12m player you must either swap like for like or do two transfers to raise the extra couple of million you will need. thus managers will sell a diverse bunch of players to buy one specific player they are all focussed on.

Its partly due to the capping of 0.3.

X managers sell 10 different players (Where x is the number needed for a price fall of 0.1 per player )

Those 10X managers then buy the same player, his price rise is capped at 0.3 so you have an overall player price fall by 1m but also an increase by 0.3. Total combined price of those 11 players therefore fell by 0.7

    8. @persecuted_by_mods
      9 years, 19 days ago

Good question, and glad someone asked it instead of blindly following. My reasoning is thus, high ownership = player expected by most to do well, if he flops it's easy to jettison him (more than likely he's relatively expensive too)

A low ownership player is usually a differential or fodder player, in either case him not doing well doesn't necessarily mean it's urgent to ship him

      1. Diva
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 19 days ago

I see your reasoning and that may be one factor: expectations versus reality. There may be other factors too, such as who owns that player.

Let's take Wayne Rooney and his 15.5% ownership as an example. What proportion of that 15.5% are managers who actively manage their team through the year and thought Rooney's on for a big year? If the answer is "many" and then he doesn't play this weekend, we're likely to see a big portion of his ownership disappear and a price drop follow.

What if, however, Rooney's owners are primarily people with a vague interest in football, who were talked into creating an FPL team in July by their mates and have now forgotten about it? If they simply picked Rooney because they knew the name, but now their team is going to sit inactive for the rest of the season, then sales in Rooney are likely to be a lot slower.

Are you suggesting that inactives are already identified. Most people, especially the casuals only joined this week. Presumably it'll take a couple of weeks if not logging on before they are classes as inactive

          1. Diva
            • 12 Years
            9 years, 19 days ago

They don't need to be identified as inactive, they just need to be inactive.

We know, based on past experience, that there will likely be some managers who will do nothing with their teams all season.

If those managers as a group are unusually predisposed to a particular group of players then it may offer those players a touch more protection against a drop.

Now, no one will be able to identify this year's inactive managers for several weeks. So no one can tell you with certainty: "X is owned by an unusually high proportion of dead teams, therefore a price drop is less likely in the event that they fail to perform."

Inversely, they can't look at this year's data yet and tell you: "Y is disproportionately owned by highly active managers, therefore a price drop is more likely in the event that they fail to perform."

What it might be possible to do, if you had gathered the data set together, is go back and identify whether a particular type of player is more predisposed to being highly owned by active or inactive players, and draw a conclusion from that. You may wish to try to apply that conclusion to this season in the hope the pattern will repeat itself.

It may be that such a study identifies, for example, that players with an ownership over, say, 20 percent, are more likely to be owned by active managers. If this was the case (and I'm not saying it is, by the way), then it might be possible to say: "Z has a really high ownership, he's got an increased risk of a quicker price drop."

But I don't recall seeing such a study that would make it possible to argue that. Hence my opening question: can anyone point me to the origin of this theory higher owned players drop faster in price?

          correct.

In off the wing now and had a really good pre season...and Everton looked really poor in the EL imo..

Not keeping him for long though.

Does anyone else think Kolasinac's starts are far from assured. I have him in my team but if the injured defenders come back and Wenger is adamant about LWB position being played by Chamberlain then... For a 6.0 defender its just too much risk for someone who might not play.

    1. Waxys

Yeah when everyone is fit it's even more risky. He couldn't start over Per and only injury forced him on.

I expect him and Per to fight for a place with Per having priority

If I was Wenger I would look at a bunch of players who actually showed some fight and heart in a match and that was badly missing last season. I wouldn't be in a hurry to change the side.

No but I listened as I was at work and it reminded me of all the Arsenal fans phoning up 606 last season and complaining that they never were able to fight back from a losing position. Which is exactly what they achieved last night

First match of the season. Teams only get better by playing together but I would think they would be very satisfied with what happened

He'll nail down that LWB position when the others are fit. AOC is clearly just a stop-gap there at the moment and the other competition is Monreal, who Wenger seems to like at LCB. Should be a good pick this season.

He seems great going forward, but Wenger could always change back to a back four like he did last night when his team conceded three goals at home to a mid table side. Also Cech seems far from steady as he almost conceded off a throw in, and couldve let Vardy have a hat-trick when he rushed off his line like a mad man. 6m defenders are good and all if they get you goals and assists but if you don't have an outstanding goalkeeper behind you, then I don't see the point in having him. Early days though.

      1. Andy_Social

If Wenger uses a back 4 he'll have Elneny and Xhaka sitting in front, which will still allow the fullbacks to bomb forward. I'm very confident Kol has a great season ahead of him and am glad I've got him from day one.

Kolasinac was great yesterday, one assist, one shot on target, a few successful interceptions, if he isn't nailed on I don't know what to believe anymore!

I have him in my team at the moment because Arsenal have a fairly good schedule. It gets a lot tougher in a couple of months and doesn't ease up until sometime next year. I'm hoping he's a bandwagon for the next 2 months and then I'll sell. Conceding 3 to Leicester though doesn't bode well for CS, but they are extraordinary circumstances with their starting CBs missing. We should have a better feel once their starters are back.

I can't have them all TM I rate KDB, Alli Eriksen Salah but I can't fit everyone in.

Honestly he is. If Hazard was fit Xhaka would be in and Fabregas would become Hazard.

                        Just how things panned out.

I don't like to use the term second team and it's really just a family account and my LMS team isn't the one I use for FPL.

Better to go by what I say in my posts and ignore the semantics of things. If for example I was badmouthing Hazard the whole season and then you see him in my team yes that's dodgy but in this case no I don't see a problem personally

He looked really good. I kind of wish i stayed with him and didnt go with Bailly to cover the united defence.

If Arsenal can keep clean sheets then he might end up essential.

I think you made the right call, kola is only a transfer away and time will tell what position wenger will play him. in the meantime if united keep a clean sheet you get more points this gw and still great fixtures ahead

Jesus or Aguero can score so only one gets the points.

Players who dive or feign injury could face a two-match suspension starting from this season.
If a player is found guilty of deceiving an official or admits to the charge, the yellow or red card given to the opposing player can be rescinded.

So a defender can miss out on bonus points because of this? Surely they won't give those points back.

At the end of the day remember that it is your team you pick your own players, not whomever responds on this site. Iwobi was also not all that backed on here either as it was.

If it's any solace, neither player actually started, you were just unfortunately Ramsey got a return. You never know, your 1st sub may turn in a great one

I was like you, but rather than listening to the site, I didn't start through risk of minutes, which was a fair argument - he didn't start and so getting points is hard to foresee.

Hi, my name is Page 302 and I am an Iwobi owner.

Iwobi not playing, even after his promising preseason, is new and valuable information. If you let that new information make you angry, it becomes harder to process it and act on it.

Looking at yesterday's lineup, it seems that Welbeck/Walcott are backup to Sanchez (run around a bit) whereas Iwobi is backup to Ozil (thread them passes).

Depending on how TCarroll gets on today, this may or may not be an urgent problem for my team.

My watchlist is FIVE pages, ha ha! I cringe when I see players like Xhaka racking up points when I had him in my draft and dropped him to the watchlist. But then I recall a statistic I heard yesterday that over 50% of all the clubs in the football league have been in the Premier League over the last 25 years, and I realise my FPL drafts are like that. I must have had 100 players in and out at some point!

I always like cheering myself up by finding the guys who took their eye off the ball at the last minute. One chap in my ML has played a 5-3-2 with Lukaku on the bench. Another has captained Morata. The best guy has Sanchez starting and Costa warming the bench. That's money well spent!
