Olivier Giroud delivers from the bench as Arsenal leave it late to revive their day one fortunes and leave two-goal Jamie Vardy unrewarded. Here are our notes from Friday’s thrilling opening encounter.

Lacazette did enough on debut

A goal, three attempts, all from inside the box and three chances created: Lacazette enjoyed an effective and promising Premier League debut.

As last night’s Knee Jerk stated, we have to acknowledge that and welcome the fact that the Arsenal striker could eventually hand us an option of “downgrading” either Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku.

It’s early days and the big two are yet to play, but Lacazette looks set to get the opportunities to possibly maintain his impressive strike rate in Ligue 1 that brought 28 goals in 28 starts in 2016/17. If he can show that potential, there is no question that his current 18.1% ownership will grow.

Kolasinac was playing centre-back, honest

Sead Kolasinac was perhaps even more impressive on debut.

We saw from the heatmaps from last season that the Gunners show clear bias to the left flank. That was doubtless due to the influence of Alexis Sanchez.

It was again evident in Friday’s victory in the absence of Sanchez, with Kolasinac a key figure contributing to Arsenal’s dominance down the left channel. His position on the night was far from that of a traditional centre-back, even one operating on the left of a back three.

The assist for Danny Welbeck’s second Arsenal goal summed it up. The Bosnian cropped up in the penalty area to get on the end of Lacazette’s deflected pass.

Kolasinac received 26 of his 51 passes in the Leicester City half. Rob Holding, Arsenal’s right-sided centre back, received 16 of 46 with 3 in the final third to Kolasinac’s eight.

Once Laurent Koscielny is available, and Shkodran Mustafi is considered for selection, Kolasinac will surely threaten Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the left wing-back role. At that point, he will become a major interest, regardless of Arsenal’s obvious frailties in defence.

Ramsey and Giroud press for starts

The impact substitutes fulfilled their roles perfectly for Arsene Wenger, and both Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey will now enter his plans for the Gameweeek 2 trip to Stoke City.

Ramsey for Mohamed Elneney will be the obvious move for the Gunners’ boss, although he may prefer the combative Egyptian against the Potters.

Giroud’s claims could be more of a factor. His presence would add physicality at set-pieces, something that Wenger may seek out given how easily Leicester City exposed them. Mark Hughes, Ryan Shawcross and Kurt Zouma will have noted that weakness.

If Giroud is considered for a start, that could even shift Lacazette to one of the two support roles in the 3-4-2-1. The Frenchman adjusted well to a role on the left when Giroud was introduced.

Xhaka puts Ozil in the corner

Arsenal were thankful for their own set-pieces in Friday’s encounter, scoring two of their goals from corner situations. They scored just nine in this fashion all last season.

There was a significant development in this area, with Granit Xhaka monopolising dead-balls, usurping Mesut Ozil.

Xhaka took just 21 corners last season to Ozil’s 143, but he was behind eight of the Gunners’ corners on Friday – leaving Ozil with just one. Clearly, plans have been revised in pre-season and, if Ozil has indeed lost corners, this is a factor to consider.

Ozil ranked second to Gylfi Sigurdsson for successful corners in the Premier League last season, converting 41 to the Icelander’s 63.

Interestingly, following his 10-point haul, Xhaka was the most transferred in player overnight.

The Vardy option has arrived early

The Foxes striker went into Gameweek 1 as part of just 5.4% of FPL squads but instantly offered a reminder as to his qualities and suitability as a third, perhaps even second striker option.

Vardy ended last season with 13 goals but scored eight of those from 13 starts from Gameweek 26 onwards. The late surge of form demonstrated that his achievements in 2015/16 could be rekindled; Friday’s goals underlined that further.

A Gameweek 2 home tie with Brighton now looks tempting, though few will managers will shift from the established heavy-hitter options for now.

Even so, Vardy has started strongly and, after last season’s malaise in the striker position; it’s welcome to see his form add to our options early on.

Equally, however, it means that Kelechi Iheanacho faces a task to break into the Leicester XI and fulfil his promise as a 7.0 option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Your Early Kneejerk.

What has been your early Gameweek 1 kneejerk?

Mark posted up his last night around the potential for Lacazette to prosper after his debut goal for Arsenal.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/08/11/the-knee-jerk-gameweek-1-friday/

But do you have a different kneejerk move in mind?

Perhaps you are considering drafting in Jamie Vardy ahead of his good home game against Brighton in Gameweek 2 - and ignoring his dire schedule afterwards?

And what of Xhaka? A staple of many Sky teams, including my own, but not so popular in FPL.

Despite playing a deep midfield role is his dominance of set pieces (8 corners last night!) at 5.5 too good to ignore? Personally I think he could shape up to being a strong value option – if he can keep that tackling in check of course. For those that mis-stepped by selecting the non playing Iwobi the Swiss international looks an ideal replacement. A prise rise and fall switcheroo could be on the cards this week for this pair to further worry Iwobi owners.

And then there’s Maguire – an assist already and looking right at home in the former Champions' backline. Are you tempted?

Final mention goes to the beast, the tank, whatever you want to call him, who even as a centre back managed to perform like a winger. In Kolasinac have we found this year’s Alonso already?

As the weekend’s matches progress feel free to continue to add any knee jerks you are considering.

Think Lacazette will do very well, looked very lively and obviously a natural finisher.

Kolasinac looks gold too, considering he played LCB he got into amazing positions, can't wait till he plays LWB when the CB's are back (hopefully next GW). Loving my pick of him.

So sad I didn't get him but with Jesus-Kane-Lukaku up front was always going to be difficult.

I think Kolasinac will be gold when Koscielny returns - likely to get more clean sheets and he could be given more licence to attack - as a LB or LWB. All he needs now is clean sheets - which without the Frenchman look thin on the ground.

Whatever happens in Sky this season I can revel in having captained Lacazette and owning Xhaka in GWK 1. Both look great in Sky.

True. Far better to save your free transfer in GW2 rather than do a knee-jerk.

The only exception should be if one of the major players in your initial squad gets injured, suspended or dropped.

Nothing yet but as a non owner Lacazette looked very good.
Arsenal defence still looks woeful so if anything I'm more inclined by Liverpool/City/Spurs/Chelsea assets now when playing them.
Kola did look good, could be a flat track bully against lower teams, especially by how hard he pushed up despite being LcB!

Have to wonder though given Ox's form and Wenger's love of Monreal whether Bellerin's place might be at risk when the CB's return. Tank isn't going to be left out, but if Arsenal want Ox to commit to a new deal they need to play him until he signs

I've got Kola already, very happy with him already. Think he is going to unleash once he plays wingback and price will soar. If Alonso doesn't start well Kola will be a popular downgrade. Plus Alonso's new hair is weird.

Xhaka could be good, especially with corners and hits penchant for a rocket from outside the box. Just concerned he's a red card waiting to happen which could really dampen a week. Ramsey more likely if he starts starting, but such early days and we've only seen one match! Be really interesting to see how Liverpool go today, they are quite divisive in our community.

Bought Firmino as third striker mostly to be able to pick up on Vardy, Benteke and anyone else below that range. My kneejerk may be Vardy. I also took a punt on Danilo so if Firmino does well I may not press my luck on Danilo starts and switch to Harry Maguire

I didn't learn a massive amount last night. We knew that Kolasinac would be a force this season and Lacazette clearly an option.

Vardy being back on it was great to watch and I'd love to fit him in.

Guess Xhaka could be an option at 5.5..

I saw Xhaka play a lot for Switzerland and trust me: this could be the season that makes him achieve a whole new level. He has the potential. All he missed was a bit of self-confidence. He clearly is a central piece in Arsene's team now. With a few very good games under his belt and the confidence of his coach, he could become a very very good option at 5.5 with loads of assists and a few long-range goals.

It may be a bit too early to jump on the Xhaka's bandwagon. But dont underestimate him, based on last season's stats. It was only his first season and he didn't have the total confidence of his manager, as he has now.

Kolasinac looks really promising. Once Arsenal get some fit centre halves and he can be utilized in the wing back role, he could become quite a cult hero. The space that a Sanchez return will give him down that left side will only be beneficial to his output. I'm not putting too much stock in the defensive performance as a whole until they can get close to a first choice line-up out.

Could be very similar to the Alonso, Hazard combo that was so effective last season. Can't wait as an owner.

Didn't have any players last night and don't feel a mad rush to bring any of them in.

Of course, I'll assess at the end of the weekend to see if there are injuries or starting doubts in my team. If anything, on paper my team looks better for GW2 than this week. Lots can change in the next few days though.

Have Mooy to the minute so keeping the eyes open for strong 5.5 mid performances. Xhaka definitely seems plausible, but also I thought Albrighton was putting good crosses in the box. Would probably be a steady hand if a little uninspired, fixtures not ideal though.

With no Arsenal players in my initial team, i had the chance to watch the game and enjoy the spectacular comeback.

That said, i couldn't completely remove my fpl goggles. My thoughts.

Lacazette had a reasonable debut and could easily have scored another. Will probably get 20 odd goals and should be monitored. However, we dont know the outcome of the sanchez saga and how he could afffect lacazette or if giroud comes in and plays centre (pushing him out wide).

Kola really impressed and he is one player that i definitely have on my shortlist - especially if @ LWB when others return. He is big, strong and likes to get up the field and cause havoc. Will continue to get attacking returns, but arsenal's defensive frailties may stop him reaching Alonso status.

Xhaka is an interesting one. Obviously great value due to his current nailedness in a top 6 team and his set piece ability. He was responsible for 2 of Leicester's goals - but who cares when he gets 2 assists.

Then there's Vardy. He scores when he wants. Yes, arsenal's defence was woeful, but he was at his clinical best. I feel safe not having him with the upcoming difficult fixtures. But i will monitor for when fixtures change.

Everyone else is a wait and see - I'm not going to add them to my watchlist just yet.

Considering most FPL teams have not even had a player start yet, the concept of a knee-jerk transfer is a bit OTT.

Lacazette scored one goal out of 4 and Kola was in a defence that conceded 3 ... is that really knee-jerk material ?

I had always planned to transfer Vardy in once the fixtures eased up, so the brace last night was an unwelcome sight. I now wonder if his price will rise slightly which could make him unaffordable and scupper my plans. For the time being I'm sitting tight monitoring his price. I'm more concerned about next week's home game with BHA, another brace will surely equated to a 0.3 rise and then I'd be screwed.

Same here, Vardy's peaking too early for me!

If i were to kneejerk it would be for Xhaka because I had him in my squad for a week and took him out yesterday.

After watching the West Brom v Bournemouth game, there is an obvious no brainier in my team, Hegazi. At 4.5 he is a steal and directly replaces Clark.... and that's even before Clark has played!

Had considered Mounié instead of Gabbiadini, Hegazi instead of Dawson to save 0.5 which would have allowed me to keep Bertrand instead of downloading him to Stephens... all in all I could easily have 21 points more.

The frustration makes me want to kneejerk to one of them.
