A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

know this will seem knee jerky to people but im honestly cosidering gab and kaku to lac and firminho as i have 0.5 itb. And thats regardless of whether kaku scores a hattrick today. i think lac and kaku are similar options maybe goals a bit more spread in arsenal but they will score more as well. And firm looking a proper top pick taking set pieces now as well. Im disapointed i didnt consider lacazette more i feel like group think and fear has driven me to get kaku over any other reasons... bottom line there are a lot of premium strijer optiions out there who will all score similarly imo so why not go for the cheaper ones?

I get your point but taking a hit right after the first gameweek is not advisable. Do it one at a time if you're really keen on it. Gabi has a decent fixture next; so keep him and boot Lukaku for Laca. The following gameweek, boot Gabbi for Firmino.

Firmino quite an upgrade on Gabbi i think, but the reasoning is based on the expectation that Mourinho´s team does not score much, but one should remember Chelsea three years ago, pretty good at scoring so not entirely correct to assume they wil be lowscoring, and lukaku more nailed than Lac, with Giroud beeing a very good option from the bench and possibly rotating too. But it could work out as a double, Firmino have a lot higher ceiling than Gabbi. Anyway, wait for todays matches-)

    Pickford, Elliot
Alonso, Van Aanholt, Danilo, Bailly, Marriapa
De Bruyne, Mane, Salah, Carroll, Brady
    Lukaku, Gabbiadini, Mounie

I've swapped Van Aanholt for Hegazi (gives me fund and Palace look terrible defensively)

I'm looking at getting rid of Gabbiadini + Danilo, replacing them with Yoshida + a striker.

Is 3 liverpool players a good idea? Thinking of Firmino. If not, any good shouts for a striker? Can't afford Kane, Aguero, Jesus, Lacazette and Morata)

      top 100K after 20gws
      top 10k after 30gwa

Does anyone have this funny feeling that West Ham will up their fane defensively this year?

Just think with Fonte, Zabaletta and Hart having chance to get prea season they could surprise people

He's in mine. I can smell a haul against Watford. Silva's Hull was pretty bad away from home too and they do have some defensive issues.

I have Gabbiadini and double Soton defence.

If Gabbiadini fails again I'll be looking to free up some money on him and try to get a United defender hopefully Lindelof becomes an option.

Lack of trust in Gabbi (and not believing the pre-season stats for Mounie) is what prompted me to go for Firminio as 3rd striker. And with those fixtures I think Forster is a better bet than DDG, and that doubling up is the way to go. I will probably get a Utd def when Kompany gets injured, but I'm not sure about Lindelhof. Good luck.

i know it's early days so I'm just brainstorming transfers for next GW which one would you choose?

    A) Iwobi > Albrighton

    B) Alonso > Kompany (bank £1m)

    1. MTPockets
      8 years, 11 months ago

Don't think I'd do either. Leicester's next 5 fixtures not great, and Alonso probably worth keeping (although I don't have him).

Well ok but I'm not feeling Iwobi will be getting much game time so I'll be getting rid of him for the likes of Mooy or Brunt who take set pieces and are nailed on

    Warning from seasons yore.

    Be brutal in GW2.

Don't hold onto miracle points. WBA / Saints need to be very closely watched. I've held onto players at the start after a single haul even though tactically it was daft - it's a terminal nostalgia. The first few GWs are notoriously good at killing early Banwagons

Hegazi is the perfect example. I'm benching him for Mee this week.
