Few could have predicted the distribution of points from Liverpool’s midfield with any confidence heading into Gameweek 1.

Some of us – unnerved by Philippe Coutinho’s absence through injury and rumours of his possible departure – even abstained altogether, writing off the investment as too much of a risk.

Yet those who gambled were rewarded with points. Goals from all three primary options in the Liverpool attack – Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino – during Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Watford confirmed the potency of the trio.

In this week’s Technical Area, we will be looking into the performance of each of these three players, analysing their goalscoring threat, positioning and chance creation potential. Though much can – and will – change as more data becomes available, here’s our breakdown of who impressed us most in the season’s opening Gameweek.

Nothing worse than months of planning only to be undone by bad luck. Jesus, Kane, KdB blanking whilst Lukaku bags a brace. Feels rotten

no, but being 50 points behind in your mini league at this stage sure does feel bad (albeit recoverable)

All you have to do is beat the leader by 1.3 points for the remaining 37 gameweeks, doesn't sound so bad now does it

Never understood the KdB thing... He's so expensive for such a deep player.

Plan still intact with the same misfiring players you had. Stay true to course, points will come.

    6. @persecuted_by_mods
      8 years, 11 months ago

Those players you have named could easily haul this week, months of planning doesn't guarantee every player will smash it. My months of planning made me end up with Darmian, Iwobi, Fabregas, Jesus, Kane, Zaha. 1 ban, 1 injured, 2 dropped! but admittedly they were all risky and short term bar Zaha

I did have Lukaku and Mkhi though, and captained Lukaku

      1. Bambi
        • 14 Years

It really does come down to Lukaku. Those who have him will often captain, and do well. Those who don't not so. But this meta is so polarised that i expect more of this to happen

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          8 years, 11 months ago

I've actually hit my wildcard, and one thing I've realised during my drafts is that as good as Kane is my team looks infinitely better without him and that i wouldn't be captaining him for like the first 6-7 gw anyway. Probably gonna chicken out and keep Kane Lukaku instead of the dream which is Lukaku Firmino Jesus

Look at Lukaku in his last 11 fixtures on the road, just 3 goals. Sure they play Swansea, but he was pretty bad last season. maybe I am grasping for anything to reassure myself not owning him isn't a problem.

        So tough to decide.
I do really like the look of Atsu, and we all know he's a good player, but can he be consistent enough?
I've got to say though, if there is one time in the season to punt on him its right now. Found some form, has great fixtures, and provides a quick answer for an injured player.

I think it has to be the likely penalty taker. Read a player rating article by a fan and he said Löwe was overlapping Ince constantly which sounds good too.

        • 10 Years

I'm not sure it is likely, but it is possible. He took their last one, but Mounie hadn't been signed yet. Mooy was on them before that but missed one.

However, Mounie has never taken a pen.

        1. The Tinkerman

With new signings who knows but I think likely is still the right word tbf. After that penalty, they have also had two shootouts and both times Löwe has gone first and scored.

Andy - the Radio Yorks DJ that interviews me each week is a big huddersfield fan. He says Wagner really doesn't care about pen takers and it is left to the team to decide. Currently the feeling is that Lowe is first choice with Mooy second. Mounie is one of those non pen taking forwards ala Torres.

But - he also says that many fans are speculating that Ince will take them. But that's pure speculation.

So sadly the answer is we won't know until they get one.

For me though I like the fact that Mooy dominates corners - which looks key to their play.

Thanks Jonty. I checked and neither Ince nor Mounie have taken a penalty in their careers according to Transfermarkt (assuming this excludes shootouts). I have Fraser as a 5.5 mid, Mooy could replace him at some point but looking for a 4.5 def right now and Lowe looks promising.

Think I have it sorted, Lowe and Mkhi in for Zaha and Danilo.

Cool thanks, Yeah agree and as he will be a Kane enabler (for Laca) for gw 3 , looks best option, without further info at this stage

The chances of a Zaha price drop today have got more likely by more than 10% since this morning!

The other 3 have a higher chance of getting a CS imo.

then why have daniels who cost 5.0, downgrade to a 4.5 imo

Opinions on these options? Appreciate it, cheers!

    A)Zaha to Willian for free
    B) Zaha+Gabi--> Mikhi+Mooney(-4)
    C) Zaha+Ritchie--> Mikhi+Atsu(-4)

Same option I'm considering. Can't bring myself to do it as Miki may get dropped at some point.

It's hard to answer questions like this. It depends on his performances against Spurs, Everton and of course on other injuries and suspensions in the team. If you believe Willian will do well, just buy him.

May get two more games out of Willian.

Looking for a replacement for Kieran Trippier until his return. Favoured options:
    Ryan Bertrand
    Ben Davies
    Patrick van Aarnholt
Probably favouring the latter as a differential now he is on corners, seems nailed on as a starter and has proven attacking potential.

Happy to hear your thoughts, though!

I've got PVA in due to his current position up the pitch and the corners, however I'll be concerned if Palace don't seriously improve soon...

Bertrand or Davies. Bertrand could've easily ended up with 20 points last week.

But on corners and possibly pens, cheap and upcoming fixtures are decent. Can keep 1.5m itb for future transfers, so he appeals as a short term Zaha replacement at least.

If you had 1m in the bank, would you Zaha -> Mikhi this week?

I've also got Gabbi, and really wanted to hold two free transfers + 1m so I could shake up my squad for GW3.
