Liverpool completed one of the more eye-catching signings of deadline day with the addition of Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for an undisclosed fee, understood to be worth £35 million.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Anfield, with his desire to play in central midfield thought to have been a key factor in his decision.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp refused to be drawn on on where he plans to use the England international, however:

“I hear a lot of talk about positions but let’s talk about the player; he is someone with really good abilities who always gives everything for his team. A player that is positive and willing to take risks to try and make positive things happen.”

The History

Oxlade-Chamberlain linked up with Southampton’s academy at the age of seven and progressed to make his professional debut against Huddersfield Town in March 2010.

He made 43 appearances for Saints in all competitions, totalling 10 goals and nine assists, before joining Arsenal in August 2011 in a deal worth up to £15 million, including add-ons.

But a combination of injuries and a lack of consistency meant Oxlade-Chamberlain never managed to play more than 1,600 minutes in any single Premier League season.

He was part of the squad that won three FA Cups and played in a number of different positions, although he was primarily used as a right-sided midfielder.

During his six-year spell with the Gunners, Oxlade-Chamberlain registered 20 goals and 32 assists in 198 matches in all competitions.

Capped by England at U18, U19 and U21 levels, making a total of 12 appearances, Oxlade-Chamberlain was handed his senior debut against Norway in May 2012.

He has made 27 appearances for the national team, producing six goals and five assists.

The Prospects

Oxlade-Chamberlain may, at some point, provide back-up Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the wide forward positions, although it’s clear the 24-year-old sees himself operating in central midfield.

His chances of cementing a regular starting role look vital to his Fantasy potential but, as we know, Klopp is currently blessed with plenty of options.

Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum have all enjoyed strong starts to the season, while Barcelona’s failure to prise away Philippe Coutinho from Merseyside leaves the influential Brazilian in the mix at Anfield.

The signing of Salah is expected to see Coutinho shifted into midfield, operating in an inside-left position in Klopp’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.

Adam Lallana, meanwhile, should return from a thigh injury in mid-October, while James Milner is being viewed as a central midfielder this season, with Alberto Moreno and Andrew Robertson vying for the left-back berth.

So while Oxlade-Chamberlain should shake off his recent wing-back role at Arsenal to battle for a midfield berth, he is surely set to be part of a continuous rotation policy.

Klopp demonstrated during the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2 that he will look to shuffle the pack around UEFA Champions League matches. That is a big concern with the group stages getting underway between Gameweeks 4 and 5.

Last season, Oxlade-Chamberlain enjoyed his best return in terms of assists in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), producing a total of seven.

He averaged a key pass every 48.84 minutes, which bettered both Wijnaldum (69.26) and Emre Can (71.76).

Those numbers suggest that he could provide Liverpool with improved creativity from central areas, although it’s difficult to read too much into the underlying statistics given that he played in such a variety of positions for Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has never been a major goalscoring threat.

He is yet to score more than two goals in any single Premier League campaign and only averaged a shot every 55.82 minutes last season. In contrast, Wijnaldum and Emre Can recorded six and five goals respectively.

Only Manchester United (10) have scored more than Liverpool (eight) so far in 2017/18, while Klopp’s side lead the way for shots from inside the penalty area, with 39.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has the energy and thrust required for a box-to-box role and, if afforded the freedom to push forward, his potential for attacking returns should be enhanced.

But with just nine goals and 19 assists over the past six seasons, he has a lot to prove as an attractive Fantasy option.

With the added rotation concerns, and the fact Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino are all in red-hot form, there appears little temptation to risk investment at this time.

Indeed, the upcoming fixtures (mci BUR lei new MUN tot) appear to give us time to assess the situation. Although, as Liverpool proved in the 4-0 win over Arsenal, Klopp’s side can defy the schedule to register goals against any opponent.

Ironically, Thursday’s move may have a greater short-term impact back at Arsenal.

Certainly, the prospects of defenders Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac seem improved without Oxlade-Chamberlain providing competition in the wing-back roles.

Bellerin now appears to have little or no threat for his start, while only Nacho Monreal – who has been playing more as a central defender since Arsene Wenger switched to a three-man defence – offers competition to Kolasinac on the left.

As for Oxlade-Chamberlain, his price tag of just 6.0 in FPL (8.9 in Sky Sports) may eventually see him emerge as a consideration. But at present, our three Liverpool slots should perhaps be reserved for their buoyant front three.

We should also have one eye on a Klopp defensive option given their recent record of seven clean sheets from the last nine Premier League Gameweeks.

Oxlade-Chamberlain got the move he desired but, in Fantasy terms, we remain cautiously optimistic on its impact on our season.

          GGG VS CANELO.

Going to be a blockbuster can't wait. Expected PPV over 3 million.

If Triple G knocks out Canelo early he's got a chance if the fight starts to go the distance Canelo has a much higher punch rate and will win on points

Either way it's a guaranteed blockbuster.

I'm going Alvarez to win this.
I think Golovkin is really overrated.
Yes he's never lost, but his unbeaten record is a bit like Celtic's in Scotland.
            Unbeaten against very poor opposition.
Never once faced anything near a dangerous opponent (until this)
            Which, at 35, is pathetic.
Only kell brook (blown up 2 weights)
Alvarez one loss to Mayweather, no shame at all.
But his wins are against a far higher standard than Golovkins
Cotto, Khan, Lara, Mosley, Kirkland, Cintron, Baldomir, Chavez Jr
Good level of opposition. Beats anything GGGs fought

Agreed but I still think GGG is really good and his punching power is phenomenal. Although his fight with Brook exposed him. I'm going with Canelo too with a points decision.

He's good. But he's always got away with the easy option when winning a title.
He currently has all the belts but Alvarez is still the actual middleweight champion in lineal (real) terms as he took the tougher fights.

Hopkins unified the 4 titles in a tournament years ago with Trinidad Joppy and Keith Holmes. After that, Jermaine Taylor beat him, the Kelly Pavlik beat him, then Martinez beat him and Cotto beat Martinez.

Alvarez then beat Cotto, so in real terms, he's undisputed champion.

GGG holds a pile of alphabet titles by beating nobodies who never won their titles in the ring

Golovkin is good enough that Canelo chose to give him his belt rather than fight him a few years ago. The only reason he accepted the fight now is due to fan pressure and the hope that Golovkin has declined. I agree that Canelo has fought better opposition generally speaking, however for the most part he tends to fight people who are either past it or much smaller, if not both. Nevertheless, he is very skilled and it should be a great fight 🙂

You believe that? Canelo has fought far too many quality opponents for it to be true.
Just look at who Golovkin has fought. And look into when he called out anyone from 154-168 and see what happened when Andre Ward accepted that challenge

It is true, at least as of late. Canelo's last three fights have been a joke and he has done everything humanly possible to avoid Golovkin or any other legitimate middlewight ever since he beat Cotto, who himself is a welterweight.

As for GGG, he has always said his goal was to unify the division and a fight between him and Ward, who hasn't even fought at 168 in several years, was never realistic.

I think Golovkin will stop Alvarez in the latter rounds.

Canelo is having to put on false size and GG is still the bigger & stronger man.

Alvarez has been in with the better standard opponent but let's face it he's a draw, now with Mayweather gone the biggest PPV draw in the sport with maybe Joshua. GGG on the other hand is the dangerous opponent and you make less money to get in the ring to risk getting KO'd.

Canelo has been dodging him a few years now himself. It's not like GGG is fresh in the scene he's over 5 years in the States and the best don't want to fight him.

I think he's the fresh man for his age too, not many rounds racked up due to his knockout record and on the flip side Alvarez has been fighting since 15yrs old. I saw chat of GGG too old in places and Alvarez prime but in boxing terms GGG a fresh man.

GGG late stoppage I think I'll go 10-12 round group.

GGG is very fresh for his age.
Mainly because he's only fought opponents who haven't been near his level
He holds all the advantages here. Size, power, etc. And he is bookies favorite.
I just think the whole hype about people ducking him has been a lot of lies.
These other fighters all fight each other and duck no one.
The only guy whose fought easy fights is then claiming its because all these other warriors are duckers?
Not having it. Boxers in general aren't like that, let alone all of them

If that is what you think that's fine man.

In reality I think certainly boxers at times will time their fights. Mayweather didnt really want to fight Pac in his prime but he fought him in the end. When Pac was on the decline. Also maybe it isn't the boxer himself preventing a bout as I referred to purse above, boxing is complicated with teams managers promotors TV networks and sometimes business will also get in the way of certain fights happening. And I think that has been the case with GGG as in times gone by he hasn't been a big purse.

I'm looking forward to the fight and I have a lot of time for both fighters.

For me Golovkin has big big pedigree, former amateur world champion, Olympic silver. Does his record look padded? Yeah, sure. But he's beat what's in front of him. You use the Celtic analogy, maybe Alvarez will be Inter Milan on September 16th and maybe you might think completely differently about him.

*I like amateur boxing I've been watching the world finals all week.*

Yeah, GGG leaves himself open to a fair amount of punches, which maybe a problem given Canelo's power but his aggressive always on the front foot style will need adjusting to by Canelo. Not as straightforward in my opinion and GGG has a chin. Canelo should have had a loss against Lara too.

It's going to go the distance and it will be really really close I think. One of those where the judges could fairly give it either way.
Golovkins chin is as good as they come probably. I think he might just struggle with the fact an opponent isn't just lined up for an easy beating for once.
                Canelo has had that before

I'm going Alvarez. Don't rate GGG as much as Albert, I think he will win on points.

It's off topic, but I just want to see Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder!

Joshua would spark him inside 3 rounds.

              Wilder massively overrated

          Eriksen-Salah-Mhki-Pogba-Chalobah

Will rotate between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 or just sod Calvert-Lewin?

From memory I think their relative rotatability works out about the same for a while, so would just pick the more promising player. Personally think that's Naughton atm.

Just had a look and Swansea's H/A switches in GW9.
Burnley's does the same in GW13 (and Newcastle in GW15).

So if H/A rotation is major factor long term Mee might be better - should probably take a look at fixtures.

I have watched some yeah, I don't watch it as much as football but it can be fun to watch.

I like FIFA eSports and when I was into Hearthstone I watched their tournaments.

Heroes of the Storm is fun to watch but I don't really know what's going on.

Generally I find when I'm really into the game itself the eSports is a lot easier to watch and you can learn a lot.

Counter-Strike:Global Offensive. Basically a shooting game where you play terrorists versus counter-terrorists. 5 people per team. The objective is to win rounds by either eliminating the opponent or by bombing different places on the map (or defusing the bomb if you are on the counter-terrorist team).

It helps a lot if you are familiar with the game. Would probably start with CS or Fifa in your place, they are easy to understand and especially CS is a spectacle to watch.

This was to defend the likes of darts, snooker, chess, F1, that dancing horses thing and synchronised swimming etc as "sports"
Someone then threw in "what about eSports then" as they require skill but not fitness and are competitive.
I now use that in the what's not a sport debate too

                        F1 is a skill and a science.

Poor analogy. There are about 50-60 people in the world that are fit enough and capable of driving a F1 car. You make it sound like almost anyone in the world can actually be competitive if given the right car, totally ignoring the dynamics required to be competitive with such a car.

Agreed. In a sport where every tenth of a second matters, every mistake means a race is over, the emphasis on focus and fitness is that much more important.

Are you by any chance an Arsenal fan? Most people would stay away from their players after the last abysmal result, and how deadline day ended.

I am. Just think its typical Arsenal to go on a run now. Next few games apart from Chelsea look good. I don't think ill have Bellerin in my team and will look elsewhere but I definitely would like Lacazette. As you said though, 'most' people, on here especially would stay away from them, because they are sheep and don't have their own views. My view is that Arsenal have a good run of games coming up, so why not have their players?

Leaving out Bellerin is probably wise, as their defense needs to be sorted out. Won't happen for at least 2-3 games.

Lacazette is not bad, not at all. But don't you think there will be more rotation to test players? Wenger loves Welbeck. And Sanchez needs to be played or he will be pissed. And Giroud needs his minutes too.

Lacazette will start all games in the Premier league from now on. Liverpool was a one off and a big mistake on Wenger's part. He's our record signing and the highest earner at the club, plus if Wenger leaves him out, fans will be annoyed. Welbeck and Giroud will get their minutes in the Europa league as Wenger said himself he will concentrate fully on the Premier League this season.

                  I.e. Schindler, Mooy, Calvert.

                  i would.......

Jones(surely injury waiting to happen + MUN cant keep cleanies every week-can they?>> Davies....Rose not coming back for a cple of weeks, then can Davies>>Aurier when he does as great fixtures

would not lose Alons0 as he will be GOLD

Also prefer Fabianski to Foster but if you set on Naughton maybe Forster

Absolutely. A front three of Kane, Lukaku and Firmino is your priority at this stage.

I can't really without multiple transfers or dropping one of my attackers:

                        Foster - Elliot
                        Betrand - Daniels - Stephens - Suttner - Long
                        Eriksen - Salah - Mkhitaryan - Atsu - Carroll
                        Kane - Lukaku - Gabbiadini

Do we think Salah could be rested on Saturday due to international commitments and midweek CL game ?

Hard to say who will be rested. Depends on the tactics Klopp sets up for the CL game.

Have a look at some of the top teams so far in FPL and you'll notice a common link between them. Kop that
