This is a very strange experience.

Denied the opportunity to host this week’s ScoutCast by BT’s shortcomings and with the Wildcard active, I am forced to join you and eavesdrop while my decision-making is torn apart by Andy, Jonty, Az and Luke. I have to admit, it’s pretty tortuous.

It’s like my hands are firmly fastened to the couch while the quartet lapdance* their critique around me. How I want to get “involved”.

Aside from appraising my “ill-timed” Wildcard, the boys tackle your other community questions.

They consider the Liverpool double-up, question whether midfield coverage can replace either Kane and Lukaku, debate whether Alonso is essential and then look at how fixtures can shape cheap defensive acquisitions.

I’m pretty sure they answer them all exactly as I would. In fact, listening back, they appear to justify my Wildcard for me. I can hardly wait for next week.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Could pay off massively, but I don't see the point of avoiding Kaka and Kane but still not getting in Alonso.

Think I'd get someone cheaper in for Mkhi and use the funds to upgrade a defender or Tammy.

As much of a 'gentleman' of a sport full of rogues, Wenger has become a massive whinging gas bag, completely out of touch with the modern game.

Discovered Mark's WC team on twitter earlier and now feel like I should change mine up, for some reason... can't fault his reasoning though. Tried to shoehorn in Bavies for Jones, but he won't fit.

    Foster, Elliot
    Jones, Cedric, Naughton, Ward, Wimmer
    Alli, Salah, Mkhi, Carroll, RLC/James/Chal
    Kane, Kaku, Firmino

Can't settle on that final 4.5m mid spot, and Ward/Mee is a gamble. Only slight discomfort is with Jones, but easy to replace.

Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and Everton in the next 8, he faces competition from Smalling, Lindelof etc. And he is very injury prone.

Has been superb so far though.

Close, Lukaku instead of Kane. I've been switching captains between Lukaku & Lacazette! Which one would you captain this week mate?

        1. Pierce34
          • 10 Years

Going with Lukaku. Not that I'm particularly confident, only because he's the runaway leader of the captain poll.

          Are you going with Lacazette?

It's on kaku atm in part due to Ludo's convincing article early in the week. He's also in great form to be fair. Owning Laca prob enough. The only reason I fancy a gamble is due to my horrific GW last time out (27pts)!

Dint want another 0.1 fall. Already lost 0.2 on Kane & Ritchie and even Suttner is near a price drop.
Can't loose so much TV before wildcard.

But yeah I needed a United defender badly.

i can understand the rationale.. However Ritchie performed last week and assuming he was not on bench last week..

Agreed. But the problem with Ake was I dint even know if he's going to be fit for this week. He had a good fixture next week no doubt but after that I would have wanted to sell him again.

Yup I could have saved but I would have wanted to sell Ake again after next week. Plus I think United defender was essential for me looking at their very high ownership in my MLs.

      1. Karan_G14

Dint want another 0.1 fall. Already lost 0.2 on Kane & Ritchie and even Suttner is near a price drop.

Its 0.4% of your budget. That really isn't a lot of money. Points is what matters anyway.

Points over Pounds but Ake wasn't giving me points and I don't want to loose pounds for someone not delivering points.

0.4m is the difference between owning a United midfielder and not now.

        Bavies, Cedric, Naughton, Mee, 3.9
        Alli, Salah, Mkhi, Carroll, Chalo

I discovered it's essentially identical to Mark's team except he has jones and a 4.5 where I have Bavies and a 3.9... but I'm 0.1 short. I must have 0.1m lower TV than him.

    GTG or changes needed?

    Foster
    Alonso - Jones - Naughton
    Alli - Salah - Mhki - Brady
    Kane - Lukaku - Abraham

    subs: Elliot-Duffy-TCarroll-Rosenior

    £0.1itb

Not happy with Abraham but can't see what else to do? Not sure Im brave enough to ditch one or two of Kane/Lukaku/Alonso!.

Also I'm looking to get Sanchez or Hazard in rather than double up Spurs so why take a hit to get Alli in for 1/2 weeks?

Looking at everyone's teams atm, and I can't help but think 4-3-3 should be the preferred formation this year.

For me, this is the only formation that provides overall balance to a team allowing you to have solid options throughout your starting squad.

I play 4-3-3 and it's the first time I have done so in FPL after being an early adopter of 3-5-2 last year.

    My team is,

    De Gea
    Kolasinac, Daniels, Stephens, Dawson (Suttner)
    Mkhitaryan, Eriksen, Salah (Chalobah, Carroll)
    Jesus, Lukaku, Gabbiadini

    0.5m itb

This formation allows me to have 3 big hitters in midfield as well as 2 big hitters up front and a solid back line that is capable of getting me points.

I just can't get my head around why someone would want to start Brady or Ritchie when they could get Davies or Bailly who will yield more points. FPL is about points right?

There are no consistent cheap midfield options this year but plenty of amazing premium options in midfield and attack. IMO this is the best formation to facilitate those big hitters without having a weak squad surrounding them.

This is the best start I have had in FPL in years probably because of this formation.

agree for the formation. but, i went for 4 4 2 myself and didnt went good for now. so u were just lucky tbh. but getting 4 defs definitely frees up some mils for mid and attack.,

I don't think 4-4-2 was as such a viable option as 4-3-3 due to the lack of a playing 4.5m forward.

I agree atm. Have more up front and less at the back.

Although, I quite fancy Brady to do just as well as most 5.5 defenders tbh. And then you also have the caveat of there being plenty of good 5.0 defenders, so no need to go too heavy at the back

Gabbi has scored 1 in 3. If he scores against Watford, that will be decent returns from a 7.0 striker.

Looking to get rid next week though for Firmino and downgrading Kolasinac to Maguire

If I was going to have 4 at the back, I'd at least want Alonso as one of them. For me though, I'd rather have Firmino and a rotating big hitter to allow for a 4th strong midfielder (all the cheapish 3rd forwards are much of a muchness for me, Gabi is no better than Abraham).

*By rotating, I mean I'd switch between Kane/Lukaku/Morata etc depending on form/fixtures. Reassess the possibility of an extra one once I've built some TV.

But don't you think that's just wasting transfers by rotating strikers? You'll have other problems in your team that will need seeing to before having the luxury of rotating strikers all the time

Ideally, I'm looking to pick one to stick with for 3-4 weeks (e.g, from next week I plan to have Kane for at least 4 weeks), so will hopefully be able to deal with other issues in that interim period.

Agreed and I started with Alonso in this formation but made a mistake in downgrading him to upgrade Zaha to MKhi in GWK 2. Will be getting him back on wildcard though.

Gab will be Firmino next week.

I started off with this but having such poor midfield options from the bench didn't help and isn't something I would want long term.

I'm going to rotate between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 as like you say there is amazing value in defence but I would rather an option like Brady (Zaha/King last year) who could explode and has far more potential than two 4.5s there who you'd be happy with a maximum 3 points from.

Also if your bench was ever called upon the likelihood is one of those cheap defenders could come in with a clean sheet while Chalobah might get 1 points.

My 5th defender Suttner came in for my team last week for 7 points when Kola didn't play.

I wouldn't want a lot of points on my bench every week otherwise I'd be gutted all the time. If one of my players doesn't start and Carroll or Chalobah comes in with 2/3 points, that is all I want.

Completely agree, I have played the same formation so far 🙂 With there being no playing 4.5 forward it took 4-4-2 out the equation for me. And no playing 4.0 defender limited the attraction of 3-4-3. With there being decent 4.5m midfield options in RLC and Carroll around too you could play them aswell if you wanted to switch to 3-4-3 for certain weeks.

Its good at the moment as you say, but if a cheap consistent points scorer emerges a formation switch should always be considered.

Exactly and I'm open to change, like 3-5-2 last year. Whatever formation I look at and think that will get the most points based on the players available.

Right now though, I can't see Brady or Ritchie becoming brilliant options. They've been in the premier league before and never delivered, what's changed?

        1. The Rumour Mill
          • 8 Years

Yep true. I think they are still reasonably young players, theres always the chance they could improve. Brady's pass for Woods goal at spurs last week was one Eriksen would have been proud of, it was stunning. But I haven't seen enough from him yet to get him in my team. However I have punted on him on the draft game, where I feel you have more freedom to go for the riskier option players from week to week 🙂

Yeah I agree. We need to see more from them. I was suspect of King last season because he was always a bit of a journeyman but his form persuaded me.

For me there needs to be a perfect storm of events, e.g. Cheap, playing in a very advanced position, good fixtures and most important of all, consistency

Yeah I was late to the King party too for exactly the same reason. Previously in that season I had owned Capoue, Allen, Can, Gundogan, Stanislas and Phillips though, so I was pretty sick of signing underwhelming 5th midfielders by then!!

good summary, I will try and bear those attributes in mind when assessing these sort of players in future!

I'm not arguing against 4 at the back, it might work well this season. Your team seem to be doing OK.

You write: "I just can't get my head around why someone would want to start Brady or Ritchie when they could get Davies or Bailly who will yield more points. FPL is about points right?"

I am not sure if this is a genuine question - but let me treat it as one and try to answer it.

I can explain this to you. Going from Carroll to Brady costs you 1 mill. If you downgrade Davies or Bailly by 1 million, the options are plenty: 7 out of the top 10 scoring defenders so far are at least 1 million cheaper than Bailly, a lot of them also 1 million below Ben Davies. The options are good, and when you add in the ability to rotate them based on fixtures, a team with 1 premium and 4 defenders between 4,5 and 5 can get a lot of points.

So the extra million you spend on upgrading your defenders might not net you that much extra in points, compared to having a cheap'ish defender rotation.

In midfield or attack, what can you do with 1 million? Often a lot more. The difference between Gabbiadini and Firmino (granted, 1,5 million difference) in points potential is huge.

However, your point was about whether to have a 4th mid or not. While I agree that Brady or Richie isn't the most tempting of propositions, there tends to be someone in the 4th mid position that gets lots of points (see King, Zaha last year, Mahrez, Alli the season before). Perhaps that will be the time to change to a mid 4?

Personally I go with a cheaper defense and 7 attackers I am happy with. By just having 3 defenders playing most weeks, I can maximize the benefits of a good rotation and make sure they tend to have good fixtures. As an illustration, last week I got 9 points from Mbemba, 7 from Suttner, 6 from Bertrand, 7 from Fabianski - all with good fixtures ending in clean sheets. This saves me money to allow me to have Siggy as a 4th mid when Evertons good fixtures come.

      1. FantasyFootballSprout
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

Well argued. I think in the long run though, Bailly and Davies will outscore Mbemba, Naughton and Suttner. In fact Mbemba is injured now so the only 4.0 playing defender is out. This in my eyes means 3 at the back is just not worth it.

If a good 4th mid option emerges, then I'll switch formation and get him in but I'm not being sucked in to a Capoue/ Allen bandwagon again.

Realistically, when has Brady scored consistent FPL points in his time in the premier league. Never

Tough to call which is best so far. I'm on a front 7 of
      Silva Pogba Mane Antonio Brady
      Morata Kane
for now so sticking with 352 but 433 could be the way to go alright especially as midfield will be a big rotation risk soon
