With the Champions League group stages kicking off next week, we belatedly check in with the official Fantasy Football game.

Here’s the basics on the UEFA offering ahead of the Matchday 1 action next Tuesday evening.

Squad Selection

Seasoned Fantasy Premier League managers will be more than familiar with the machinations of building a UEFA Champions League squad.

Handed a budget of £100m, you must select a squad of 15 players comprising of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

In the group stages, only three players from any given team are allowed. As the tournament progresses, though, this quota increases to four players per team for the round of 16, five for the Quarter Finals, six in the Semis and eight in the Final.

The UEFA game offers the same eight formations as FPL, allowing managers to set their teams up in 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-2-3, 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 set-ups.

According to the UEFA site, original player price are frozen until the completion of Matchday 3 – after that, they will “change depending on performance”.

Substitutions

While UEFA offers the chance to set up your bench to utilise the autosubs option, the more hands-on Fantasy managers can manually alter their line-ups between Gamedays in any Matchday.

So if one of your starters performs poorly or isn’t selected, you can swap them out and bring in a replacement off the bench later in the Matchday.

And depending on the time of the first kick-off, we get a heads-up on the early line-ups ahead for each deadline, affording us the chance to hold fire until the teams are announced before cementing their plans.

When selecting captains, you have the option to “stick or twist” on each Gameday – but by removing the armband from any player, you will lose their double points. This only applies if your captain is not sent off, however; indeed, anyone who is dismissed cannot be subbed out of your starting XI.

Considering that we are able to switch armbands in the matchday, you want to make sure that you have a strong captain choice for each evening in the event that your initial armband pick lets you down.

Scoring Points

Again, the rules are very similar to FPL.

For example, you should be more than familiar with the concept that keepers and defenders who play at least 60 minutes and don’t concede will earn six points for a clean sheet. Further up the field, midfielders garner five points for a goal but forwards pick up only four points for scoring.

You can get more on the rules here, though there are a couple of differences that are worth illuminating for now.

A player is awarded two points for earning his side a penalty, regardless of whether they subsequently convert it. And conceding a penalty means the culpable player loses one point for doing so.

Also, according to UEFA, “No assist is given to a player who creates his own goal scoring opportunity (e.g. solo run/dribble)”.

Transfers

Fantasy managers are granted one transfer at the end of each Matchday to freshen up their squads – make any more changes and (just like FPL) it’ll cost you four points per alteration.

Only one transfer can be carried forward to the next Matchday during the group stages.

After the group stages pass, Fantasy managers can then make an unlimited number of changes prior to the Round of 16 kicking off.

Once the knockout stage gets underway, though, the number of free transfers per Matchday is as follows:

Two free transfers before Round of 16 second legs
Five free transfers before quarter-final first legs
Two free transfers before quarter-final second legs
Five free transfers before semi-final first legs
Two free transfers before semi-final second legs
Five free transfers before final.

Please be aware, though, that no transfers can be carried forward once the knockout phase begins.

You also have a Wildcard in hand, which can be utilised at any point in the tournament.

Is it safe to captain Lacazette today at home to Bournemouth or is it risky incase Wenger benches him?
Someone on here said the bib theory says he will be benched and Welbeck will play ahead of him!

    1. J T
      9 years, 1 month ago

Captainging a guy that was on the bench for a side losing 4-0 and you're asking if it's a safe option?

Stick to your guns then. It's always a risk when someone didn't start last time but if you are happy go for it.

    4. Ramboros
      9 years, 1 month ago

The bib theory also says Ramsey will both play and be benched. There's only one picture of Lacazette in black, and none of Welbeck at all.

good to go for this gw? 1ft 1.8 itb. Any recommendations? I plan to use 2fts and may be a hit to sort all three areas next GW. Plan is to bring in Kane or Hazard (depending on performances) and upgrade Yosh if he is out of favor.

    Foster
    Mee, Yoshida, Dawson
    Alli, Salah, Mkhi, Pogba
    Lukaku(C), Jesus, Abraham

    Subs: Elliot, Carroll, TAA, Hunemeier

    1. how now brown cow
      9 years, 1 month ago

      Looks fine

    2. Demel
      9 years, 1 month ago

I would switch Yoshida to Jones. Yoshida being benched looks a matter of time and there if TAA is also on the bench you are down to 10 starters.

      1. sunzip14
        9 years, 1 month ago

That would make 4utd players unless I trade one of pog/mkhi to Hazard

        1. sunzip14

          or Lukaku>Kane

  7. how now brown cow
    9 years, 1 month ago

    Foster
    Bailly jones stephens
    Eriksen salah tadic Willian
    Lukaku (c) kane Abraham

    Elliot Carroll mee long

Got a few uncertain starters but with decent bench options I reckon i'm better saving ft.

    Agree? Subs looking right?

    1. sunzip14

I would put Mee first in the bench. otherwise, gtg!

  8. Ravager

    Foster (Elliot)
    Stephens Danilo Davies (Mee, Hunemeier)
    Tadic Mkhi Willian Ritchie (Carroll)
    Lukaku Kane Firmino

    1 FT 2.0 ITB

Danilo > Alonso or do you consider something else pressing?

    1. how now brown cow
      9 years, 1 month ago

Reckon the midfield needs some cash splashed on it soon. Wouldn't tie it up on Alonso

      1. Ravager

Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I'm thinking. Specially with members like Willian + Tadic present. Would you save the free?

        Any suggestions?

    3. Demel
      9 years, 1 month ago

Can you do Ritchie to 4.5m and Tadic to heavy hitter of choice? You could downgrade Danillo to Jones if you need more cash.

      1. Ravager
        9 years, 1 month ago

Well I just got out KDB...my issue really is identifying mids that have really kicked on besides the Manu/Pool mids.

        1. Demel

Christian Eriksen is an obvious pick. Hazard the glamour pick.

True. Think I'll just hold tight with the midfield this week. And work with two frees next week

      1. Hot Fuzz
        9 years, 1 month ago

nah man no way, cedric is on the way to get another CS and Salah is a beast goal and an assist boom and i dont even own him. 🙂

        1. Carlton_Goal
          9 years, 1 month ago

I said Salah would be better than Ramsey? And yes Cedric will probably get a clean sheet but he hardly ever does anything else. Naughton will probably get a clean sheet too this weekend and has attacking potential if he's playing at wing back. So could potentially outscore Cedric. I didn't say he definitely would in my first comment, I just said he can.

    Wildcard team looking ok?

Lossl - Elliot and Dawson - Cedric?

      1. Carlton_Goal

Personally like Dawson a lot with the set piece threat, did well for me last season, and Cedric never seems to do much apart from get the clean sheets. Not sure about Elliot, newcastle have looked very poor so far (except against West Ham because we're terrible)

Mbemba is out for s while. If playing 442 you really want 4 defenders who offer enough of an upside thst you would play every week regardless of opponent. I am not sure you have that.

That 4.0 will cause you big problems, and o honestly think B will outscore A by alot.

I'm worried about getting burnt by Daniels on the bench like last gw. Arsenal not exactly in form

Can still see Arsenal scoring even if they don't win

Got a funny feeling llorente is going to score today and start an improbable mini-wagon.

Llorente is not even playing.he will be a very nice bench warmer and just fill in when kane is sore and for other competition rotations other then that jansson and llorente gonna be best buddy's with all the time they will be together on that bench.
      🙂
