Are Harry Kane and Romelu Lukau about to make this season very dull?

Many of us marvelled at the array of attacking options we faced prior to Gameweek 1 and, even today, the choices showed up; goals for Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata demonstrated that.

But there is already a feeling of inevitability about the fact that Lukaku and Kane have dominated as the top two captain picks for four successive Gameweeks.

The Spurs’ striker’s “mini drought” ended today at Goodison Park – perhaps the least likely venue for a haul when we studied his opening four Gameweeks. But the Toffees were poor and simply folded to an impressive Spurs display.

Now, with the next four fixtures looking so favourable Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Kane’s bandwagon will surely gather pace, stalled only by the fact that 30% of Fantasy Premier League managers may be otherwise distracted by replacing the suspended Sadio Mane in midfield.

It now seems only a matter of time before Kane’s 26% ownership rises and starts to reach levels similar to that of Lukaku.

The Manchester United striker was hardly spectacular at Stoke but, again, he found the net and could have scored more. Owned by 58%, if he remains free of injury, it’s feasible that he could even span the entire season as the go-to captain option for the majority of managers; 37% backed him today, with Kane back on 11%.

With the Wildcard active, I pondered losing one of this pair – temporarily gambling on Lacazette outscoring Kane today and paying the price.

I’m not sure I want to taste that medicine again. Fortunately, the funds have been reserved to bring in the Spurs man ahead of Gameweek five, and he’ll be locked in from now on.

Indeed, I’m now wondering if that means that the scope of my attacking changes this season will be limited to my third striker and an occasional shuffle of three big-hitters in midfield.

My faith in Kane is pretty much unshakable once the goals start rolling. Meanwhile, Lukaku looks likely to keep scoring merely by turning up to lead a United attack powered by Paul Pogba’s physicality and fed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s guile.

We can flirt with alternative options, even experiment with the captaincy from time to time, but giving up on the security on offer from Lukaku and Kane won’t be easy.

The aforementioned Jesus, Lacazette and Morata all have their merits. The latter is now the top scoring striker but, presumably surrendering spot-kick duties to Eden Hazard, I’m not convinced he or even Jesus can live with the “big two”.

I’m preparing to watch Kane and Lukaku dominate, push 30 goals and battle for the Golden Boot. That would tie up 24 million of my budget over the season and restrict my ability to react to the big-hitter bandwagons in midfield.

My season might be limited to switching Spurs, Liverpool and United midfielders to form, and shuffling some defenders according to fixtures.

That doesn’t sound all that appealing, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have the balls to change it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

These look like a good use of 2FT?
    Mbemba or Hegazi first?

Rashford is tempting too but Lukaku should and most likely will do very well in the easy home fixtures like he did at Everton last season.

Morata at 1.5m less is a good option though I feel

Am I crazy to want Coutinho in for a couple of weeks at least while he is going to probably play that LW role?

Have Willian, Stephens and Tadic in my squad who all sadly look like they need replacing soon with 2 FT's. Tadic + Willian > 4.7m mid max + Couts is really tempting or I could do something like Gross, Mbemba, Coutinho for a 4 point hit.

    Waiting for now of course.

Unreliable fpl formation should I say, that imo doesn't offer the same consistency over a season.

3 Defenders with attacking returns is exceptionally lucky.

Hardly when so many wingbacks at the top teams play so forward. Alonso Kolasinac Walker Davies Bertrand Valencia all have fairly good chances of attacking points and clean sheets. For their prices, they offer huge value compared to all the tosh in the cheap mid and forward brackets.

Mane red - no red for me, he had his eyes on the ball he did not go in to hurt to keeper! it was so harsh, it was a yellow card for a high foot. Was he supposed to pull out and leave ederson win the ball??

Nah, you want a lot more from a £5.5m defender than Stones.

Personally I'd go Vardy over Firmino at that price point (unless you don't have any other Liverpool attackers)

Same here, really enjoyed one of my drafts but the other was completely broken on the night. Fantasy NFL which also involves drafting has taken up a bit of my attention too.

Realised just how appealing it is that you only have to manage one team in FPL which represents you in tons of leagues.

Still, at least FPL draft doesn't require much time thinking about transfers.

Is Mark's GW3 Wildcard (which I am convinced was triggered by an impending 0.1 price drop on Fraser) the biggest howler of Mark's FPL career?

Is his position as the official scout and the source of all FPL related knowledge at risk after such a basic error?

I just rewatched chunks of the game. Knockaert was very good, and the driving force behind a lot of Brighton's attacks, but I don't remember any clear cut chances for him or near assists. Gross definitely looked better from a fantasy perspective and earned his points.

Vardy because he's a machine and is fixture-proof. That said he does have good fixtures and if anyone's gonna score for Leicester it'll be him. Just got a feeling he's gonna do well over the next month or two.

Firmino a good choice too though, if I didn't have Salah I might consider him.

VVD is on the verge of return now too, I think Southampton defence is a big rotation risk regarding the 4 cbs.

Could see him trialling 3 at the back and 2 and the back with different pairings. Cedric is the safest pick for the price but how good is Southamptons defence anyway.

    3. Netley Lucas
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 22 hours ago

It's tricky, you'd think the plan is VVD & Hoedt but they now have 4 decent cb's who can all challenge for starts making Cedric or Bertie the safer options

    4. noquarternt
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 22 hours ago

As a Stephens owner, think it's time to get out of the Saints' defence. Maybe Cedric/Bertrand.

    5. TallestJohn
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 22 hours ago

I just wouldn't bother, I kept him this week and rolled the free transfer because I knew he wouldn't drop but after he didn't play I was ready to get Davies.

At the very least I imagine he'll miss a game here and there, worst case he might be out altogether. If you still want Saints defence (team not playing well but good fixtures) I'd go Cedric at £5m. Bertrand better but at around £5.5m there's better value elsewhere.

How'd everyone do? I'm on 58 with Ward (BUR) to play.

Basically all my points coming from Jesus, Kane, Lukaku(C) and Bavies, lol.

Wish I left the C on Jesus or Kane. Deciding between the two all week and only changed to Kak after hearing Shawcross was out. Still happy though.

Steadily climbing the ranks at 400k now. Should stay within that range after today's matches.
