This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Did people not see that kane hit the crossbar and had multiple tap in chances bar excellent clearences by a swans defender or a brilliant save from fab?Spurs should also of had two penalties! Could easily of equalled aguero on another day

Of course, but he's consistently 'unlucky' and there are equally good/better fixtures for other captains.

I own him and hope he will. But logic says at 12.5m 1) I should shift him; 2) I should prioritise shifting him over say Lukaku.

Kane is clearly dominating every aspect of a striker's game but the goals. His essentiality is questionable however, because his alternatives are performing well enough (or even better than Kane) to cover not having him.

First of all the first handball wasnt penalty as was unintentional. Secondly shooting off target from 5 yards is actually cause for concern over his finishing skills. Third, Spurs as a team played very poorly at Wembley.
Conclusion: Keep patience and captain in easy away games this season till new stadium is ready

      I'd stick with him.

It's just annoying that we have to sit through these "troll" performances.

Yesterday was exactly like it was last Christmas when Spurs have two plum home games against Burnley and Hull I think it was. Everyone bought Kane, everyone captained, he blanked both 🙁

Then he started banging them in in the "harder" games around it.

Spurs being in Europe REALLY doesn't help either...the sooner they're out, the better for the PL.

Spurs, more than the other top teams, have a definite top eleven that play really well together. Rotation badly affects their performance.

Poch turning into a tinkerman/Pep doesn't help either. Why rest Bavies and play Vert out of position. Why play Trippier at rightback, then switch him to left-wing!?

Son playing is also bad news for Kane...he shoots on sight, rarely passes to another teammate.

Kane captainer and Vardy owner. Just seen Vardy's miss of the season. Even has a minor injury to boot and scored from a dodgy penalty. How's your luck.

Sometimes all you can do in this game is put all the pieces in the right place and hope the picture matches the box.

Reminded me of his double blank vs Hull and Burnley last season. Could have scored several in each game, then in the following games he did just that. West Ham next weekend should be a different story. High hopes of a big score. The downside is Aguero vs CPL and Lukaku vs a unconvincing Sou make it hard to drop either of them. Is there a viable way of those three up top? Have to see them as the main golden boot contenders come May.

Irrelevant in my opinion. I think he is clearly overpriced right now. Lukaku and Aguero have 5 goals in 5 games and cost 1m less. We are talking about proven top strikers that will score around 25 goals this season (as they did last year). Even if we forget the fact that Spurs are playing their home games at Wembley, I have no idea what Kane owners seem to think that extra million is going to buy them.

And Aguero has been lucky - first goal he is offside, and for his assist, Jesus is.

This game is all about luck.

"He [Aguero] is OK. It is because he has two stupid managers that he hasn't been on the field! That is the only reason."

"There are no doubts about the quality of Sergio, but we have to handle a squad of 20 or 21 players. We have to be honest and treat each one the same.

"It's not that when Sergio plays I am happy with him and when he doesn't play I am not happy with him.

"I'm not a child any more. I am a father with three kids. I just try to be fair with what I believe and what I think.

"Everybody has reasons and arguments to say 'I deserve to play' - and that's true, but the other ones do too.

    "It is what it is."

"I don't care. I don't count too much on statistics to make my decisions."

Week old interview, but those quote scream rotation risk.

The hat-trick's in the past though, 11.4m for an asset that could be benched for the supposed plum fixture? It was justifiably thought of as somewhat of a madness last week and it hasn't changed, for non-owners.

We're really more thinking in short/medium term bursts though. There's a good chance he'll be rotated against Palace, for example. That's probably of more immediate concern than whatever amount of goals he actually finishes the season with.

Yep, but with city and kun in this kinda form does one benching in every 4-5 matches really matter?

This is the question we all need to ask ourselves.

I've watched every city match this season, and it's scary how good they're getting and the ease with which they're doing it.

      Much to ponder.

Going out on a limb here, I don't buy into the City hype that much, to be honest. Sure they're good, but they're not the free-scoring machine everyone is believing them to be after today. Let's not forget they struggled to break down an inexperienced Brighton, a woeful Everton and a stuttering Bournemouth. Their thumpings have come against a Liverpool side who missed their best player for a majority of the game and gave up on the game (as evidenced by the Ox for Salah subbing at half time) soon after, and who were starting 1 of their preferred back 4. And then it has been Watford who had 5 defenders ruled out due to injury or suspension. The game was effectively over after 2 offside goals put them 3-0 up in the first 30.

Last season Aguero was the most expensive player, and it was hard to justify the outlay on him when other, less expensive options were matching/outscoring him.

I know it's very early days but it seems that the situation could be similar with Kane this year.

It was hard to justify the outlay on him because he faced the risk of being dropped at any time. When that risk was injured long-term, we all got him in and put the TC on him. No such risk for Kane.

I have Mendy and am very happy to keep hold of him. Looked a very good attacking option against Liverpool and City very tight defensively this season.

Tottenham denied a pen Kane would take, he hits the crossbar and gets denied a great heading goal by Fabianski. Owning him since the start has been tough but I may get rid of him or Lukaku for Aguero. How about you guys?

I'll try a slightly different one. For a -4..... would you do...

    Suttner, Salah, Rodriguez

    To

    4.0Def, RLC, Aguero

Would give me Kane, Kaku, Aguero..... tempting!

Pick the best defender out of these 4 to replace Stephens. Has to be nailed beacuse i have a poor defence and 1.4 ITB

    Kolasinac, Otamendi, Trippier, Naughton

    Current defence:

Stephens, Hegazy, Lowe, Alex-Arnold & Rosenior

So looking forward to coming on here after Sanchez explodes (probably GW9) and people are rushing to tear up their carefully planned GW8 WCs.

Spoken as a Sanchez non-owner with no plans to get him in on GW8 WC.

This might be the most demoralized I've been in six seasons of playing. 17 from 7. My goodness. It's a marathon, not a spr... I can't even use this line to make myself feel better 🙂

Every so often, these things happen.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself down - and start all over again! 🙂

Thanks, Doos. Five captain fails in a row have hurt - three have been bad luck; two were trying to be clever. I still like my side and only need to move on from Dann. But this sure is a humbling game sometimes.

It does appear to be taking a while to settle down this season. The expected big hitters aren't being consistent enough, and different options appearing every week

The best week to have a bad week is a low scoring overall GW, like this one

Yeah, I think I expected to come on here and see a bunch of scores in the mid 20s. Then I see 40s flying around, and my wife is sitting on 53 (53!) and you realize your shocker of a week is even more shocking than you realized 🙂

You'll have better weeks (and the GW is not over yet!). Mine is going just as bad. Our teams are pretty similar. Dann is an issue for you. I think Aguero will need to come in soon. Salah is looking like a must for the WC whilst Firmino might need to go.

  29. stat
    9 years, 18 hours ago

PSA for people who have activated their WC and have Mee in their teams: He's currently at -99.7% so he may drop tonight. If you get rid of him while he's at 4.5M and buy him back once he drops to 4.4M you can save 0.1M.

That 0.1M will go to bringing back Carroll for me, as I had to downgrade him to a 4.4M mid to be able to afford the rest of my team.

      Good tip.

It's outrageous really, Mee has 2 cleanies and has been a ball hair away from scoring 3 times.

      1. stat
        9 years, 18 hours ago

Yeah, I guess people are just looking at points and bringing in 4.5M defenders who have scored better than Mee has.

Hello guys. Tempted take a risk with early transfers as I have exact money to do Stephens & Lukaku -> Otamendi & Aguero (-4). Which of the following options looks the best for you?

    Foster
    Davies, Jones, Suttner
    Willian, Eriksen, Mkhitaryan, Choupo-Moting
    Lukaku, Kane, Firmino

Subs: Elliott --- Stephens, Carroll, Long --- 0.3 ITB, 1 FT

    A) Willian and Stephens -> Ritchie and Kolasinac (-4)
    B) Stephens & Lukaku -> Otamendi & Aguero (-4)
    B) Willian, Stephens & Lukaku -> Ritchie, Kolasinac/Mendy & Aguero (-8)
