Crystal Palaceโ€™s seemingly annual fight against relegation was boosted on deadline day with the signing of defender Mamadou Sakho from Liverpool for a reported ยฃ26 million.

The 27-year-old centre-back penned a four-year contract to return to the club where he spent a successful loan spell during the second half of last season.

Initially signed by Frank de Boer, Sakho will now ply his trade under Roy Hodgson after the Dutchmanโ€™s ill-fated reign lasted just four league matches before he was given the sack.

After stepping up his fitness with appearances for the reserves, the big-money buyโ€™s first outing for the senior side also coincided with their maiden clean sheet of the campaign in Tuesdayโ€™s Carabao Cup 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

His new manager was suitably impressed with Sakhoโ€™s impact ahead of a testing trip to Manchester City:

โ€œHe was excellent. Really good considering it was his first game of the season. We were worried about his level of fitness to play 90 minutes against a Premier League team. We were surprised he lasted as long as he did and he probably could have lasted longer.

It was not Mamadou who was desperate to come off and he was not cramping up or slowing down. We did not want to take a further chance.
Will he be ready for Saturday? I think he will, yes. He will certainly be in contention because he is a quality centre-back, there is no doubt about that.โ€

The History

Born in Paris, Sakho linked up with Paris Saint-Germainโ€™s academy at the age of 12 and made his professional debut for the club in September 2007.

Established as a regular starter during the 2008/09 campaign, he was a mainstay in central defence over the rest of his time at the club, producing seven goals and two assists in 200 appearances in all competitions.

In September 2013, Sakho joined Liverpool in a deal worth ยฃ18 million.

He made 17 league starts that season and was generally a first-choice option, when fit, as the Reds narrowly missed out to Manchester City for the Premier League title.

But injuries and a doping ban meant Sakhoโ€™s Anfield career stalled badly, while a fractious relationship with Jurgen Klopp meant he was never likely to succeed on Merseyside.

Sent out on loan to Palace last season, he immediately became a pivotal figure in their successful battle against the drop.

Indeed, four of the Eaglesโ€™ seven clean sheets for the season arrived in the eight matches that the Frenchman started.

Put into perspective, they managed a meagre two clean sheets in 25 matches before his arrival. Only Manchester United and Spurs โ€“ the top two defences for clean sheets in 2016/17 โ€“ kept more shutouts during Sakhoโ€™s spell in the side.

Capped by France at all age levels from U16s to U21s, making 34 appearances in total, Sakho made his senior debut in a 2-1 friendly victory over England in November 2010.

He has scored two goals in 28 matches for the national team, although he hasnโ€™t featured for Les Blues since March 2016.

The Prospects

Sitting bottom of the table with no points, no goals and no clean sheets ahead of clashes with both Manchester clubs and Chelsea in the next three Gameweeks, Palace players are far from Fantasy managersโ€™ radars right now.

After De Boerโ€™s disastrous experiment with a three-man defence, there was no surprise to see Hodgson install four at the back for his first match in charge against Southampton last weekend, fielding Scott Dann and Timothy Fosu-Mensah at centre-half.

The Eaglesโ€™ manager continued with the same set-up against Huddersfield in midweek, with Sakho partnered by James Tomkins.

When fully fit, Sakho looks assured of a starting berth at Selhurst Park, with Dann, Tomkins and Fosu-Mensah, along with another new arrival, Jairo Riedewald, vying for the spot alongside the Frenchman.

However, both Fosu-Mensah and Riedewald are versatile enough to offer alternatives at full-back and even in holding midfield roles, with the former, in particular, expected to continue in the starting line-up.

Assessing the Palace rearguard after the opening five rounds of fixtures, Fosu-Mensah is their number one defender in the Bonus Points System with a score of 76 edging him six clear of Dannโ€™s 70.

At 4.5, the on-loan Man United is likely to be the cheapest Palace defender on offer, yet Dannโ€™s goal threat is another factor that could influence Hodgsonโ€™s (and our) thinking โ€“ he is second only to Burnleyโ€™s Ben Mee for efforts in the box (six to seven) among FPL defenders.

Both Dann and Sakho are identically priced in FPL at 4.9 apiece but with 10 goals and seven assists over the last three seasons, the former could be our preferred Palace defender if Hodgsonโ€™s no frills tactical approach boosts their resilience.

Yet with a trip to Spurs on their agenda in the next six rounds of fixtures, it seems that the best time to target Palaceโ€™s standout performers will be from Gameweek 13 onwards.

This will afford us time to analyse the managerโ€™s preferred regulars ahead of a run of matches (STO bha wba BOU WAT lei swa) that could prove essential to their latest survival battle.

Is it a bad idea captaining Jesus this weekend considering he played a full 90 last night and is likely to get little more than 60 mins with CL and Chelsea away next week? I'm even have a tiny concern that Pep might rest him altogether against Palace...

Only other possible captain options are Kane, Eriksen or Morata really...

Don't captain Jesus. Kane is obvious choice

I'm on WC and this has made my decision easy on who to get out of him and Aguero. I think go for Kane mate, he'll play close to 90.

    4. UnitedFan
      9 years, 1 month ago

Is quite risky. He'll still start imo but you want a captain that's casting no doubts in your mind and will probably play the full 90. I

I don't see Jesus starting unfortunately. I'd stick it on Kane. Away to WHU is a good fixture for him.

Jesus may well play for a short time, giving you 1 point which is far from ideal. Kane away to West Ham is a better option

    Repost

Is a shot off the bar or of the post considered a big chance/big chance missed? I know it is considered off target but to me it is more of a big chance than any shot on target regardless of the distance. I know Kane has hit the woodwork 2 or 3 times so I am curious if these are included in his big chances stats. Have a feeling they are not and that has misleading when saying Kane doesn't have a good ratio of shots to big chances compared to other premium strikers.

i don't know for 100% but that's common sense. they wouldn't penalise a player for almost scoring a wordly with a great effort but would if they miss a sitter.

I think it is common sense to count a shot off the woodwork as a big chance even from 40m out tbh.

            1. gavigan
              9 years, 1 month ago

Why? Every goal scored isn't counted as a big chance, in fact most of them aren't. A shot from 40 yards that goes in or hits the woodwork likely has less than a 5% chance of scoring, so wouldn't be considered a big chance.

            2. Jazz!
              9 years, 1 month ago

How is that common sense? A 'big chance' is simply a great chance like a one-on-one. Doesn't matter where the ball ends up. A 40 yard screamer is not even close to a big chance, even if it goes off the woodwork or goes in.

This means that a big chance is all about probability rather than the actual outcome.Makes the stat less relevant to me. Discounts the quality of the shot, the pedigree of the player etc.

            3. UnitedFan
              9 years, 1 month ago

Disagree. In fact you have a small chance from 40 yards out.

But still the result is that it was almost a goal only denied by bad luck. More than a shot on target where the keeper made some effort to deny the goal.

                1. UnitedFan
                  9 years, 1 month ago

Goals and chances are different things. Shoot from 40 yards, you've got a small chance of scoring, whether you end up with a goal or not. Shoot from 5 yards, you've got a big chance of scoring generally, whether you score or not.

    2. gavigan
      9 years, 1 month ago

A big chance is generated when the player making the attempt has about a 50% of scoring. Whether it was scored/missed/hit-post isn't taken into account, just conditions when the shot is taken. So just because Kane hit the woodwork doesn't mean it was big chance missed, although it may have been.

Imo that makes the Kne stats of big chances misleading. People are dismissing his shots itb and shots on target stats because they don't translate into big chances according to your definition. He should be up there with Aguero and Lukaku then (or at least close)

Not in the statistical sense but at least when it comesto form/eye test etc. In real life in other words.

He's passing the eye test for sure, been great every time I've watched him. Very involved etc, just been unlucky / spurned a few chances. Stats can be overanalysed, he'll score loads soon.

    RMWCT if you please..

    Foster Elliot
    Jones Kolasinac Davies XXX Hunemeier
    Eriksen Salah Silva/Mkh Gross Carroll
    Aguero Lukaku Carroll

Depending on whether I go Silva or Mkh I will likely have 5.1 or 5.0 to spend on the final defender. My main 3 are fairly nailed but aware I don't have Saints defence so maybe go Cedric? Will allow me to play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 which I am not averse to doing.

        1. Simon Says...
          9 years, 1 month ago

Coverage argument gets a lot of bashing, but it has some validity at times - e.g. City are scoring loads of goals, you probably want some part of that action. It's why Silva has emerged as a good option. But it's still more important to compare player to player, and fixtures play a key role in this.

I have taken a 4 point hit this week, I now wish to take another, can I now use my wildcard and get back the original 4 point lost from my first transfer before the wildcard.

I know it's a waste of a wild card but happy with my team apart from a couple of injuries.

I don't want to activate wildcard to do 1 more transfer and still have a hit on the first.

Cheers. So Cork first priority for you? I was currently planning to bench him, but I'll take a look at stats to double check.

So there you are. The new crystal palace manager. Woy. A seasoned well respected international manager.

Your team haven't won a game in the prem this season. Your best striker can't score and your best attacking creative mid is injured.

So what do you do? Leave the door open for man city to walk all over you, or park the bus?

I'm not saying aguero won't score, I'm saying that it's not gonna be 5, 4 or even 3 nil. Close game that could only have a goal or two in it imho.

What if they're too crap to successfully park the bus?

I won't be surprised even if it's 5-0. I'm just not sure how everyone is so sure he's going to score a hat trick. He got 9 points in that 5-0 against Pool. Well, that's not bad, but people need to remember that when taking -8s etc to bring him in.

They are not bringing him in for one week only. Why does a point hit have to be paid off right away?

How are you so sure they are not?

Carry that on to Utd + Chelski, and Woy is going to have the 'honour' to be in charge of a team who, after 8 games, have a big fat zero in the goals scored column.

Certain teams can park the bus successfully and others can't. It's well and good having everyone behind the ball, but they mightn't be any good at defending full stop.

Parking the bus won't help them, it will mean City will have plenty of the ball, now they have Walker and Mendy that will suit them as they'll bomb down the wings flinging in crosses, if that don't work then they have Silva and KDB there to open them up.

City have way too many weapons to hurt Palace and now they have these full backs, they have more than one way to hurt you.

I think Harry Kane has something like 19 goals in 26 London Derbys, isn't this the wrong week to sell him?
