Kevin De Bruyne stars but Sergio Aguero misfires as Man City are stretched for a change, while Harry Kane is at it again away from home.

Liverpool, however, are left to rue a night of wasted opportunities.

Here are the notes from the first batch of Matchday 2 Champions League fixtures.

Tough test for City, long night for Aguero

After a fortnight spent steamrolling lesser sides, Man City were given a much sterner test by Shakhtar Donetsk just when they needed it most.

Heavy league wins over the likes of Watford and Crystal Palace, and against Feyenoord in Europe, are all well and good, but the Ukrainians put in a performance much more in keeping with what Pep Guardiola’s team might expect to face when travelling to Chelsea on Saturday.

Shakhtar outplayed their hosts for much of the first half before goals from the excellent Kevin De Bruyne and substitute Raheem Sterling capped a much-improved showing from City after the break.

They could even afford to miss a penalty – Sergio Aguero the guilty party – as they made it seven straight wins and five clean sheets from six matches in all competitions.

The tireless De Bruyne scored his first goal of the season, smashing home after being fed by David Silva, before substitutes Bernardo Silva and Sterling combined to seal the win.

By then, the 27.3% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Aguero might have been concerned less about their man missing a penalty than the fact that he had not long left the pitch.

The striker ended up playing 85 minutes, whereas his fellow forward Gabriel Jesus was subbed off after just 54 minutes.

Aguero has been bought by another 97,000+ new managers this week, whereas Jesus has been sold by more than 127,000.

Guardiola may well start both at Chelsea, with one of the pair perhaps withdrawn early. However, the doubt and anxiety is typical of what is to come throughout this period, with Man City juggling matches on two fronts.

It’s worth bearing in mind, though, that Aguero has struggled for pitch time for Argentina in recent months and is likely to earn far less minutes – if, indeed, any – over the upcoming international break. This could be a factor when Guardiola is considering his weekend line-up.

Elsewhere, the fact that the 4.2% owned Sterling was used only from the bench adds to Guardiola’s Stamford Bridge options. He scored his fourth goal in three matches when he came on – stating his case to make the starting line-up to face Chelsea.

Leroy Sane started back-to-back matches for the first time this season and was as dynamic as ever. But he was wasteful in front of goal and will be fearing for his starting berth on Saturday.

Second-guessing Guardiola’s intentions is always a risky business, although the 1.6% still holding on to injured defender Benjamin Mendy were at least given relatively definitive news by the manager post-match.

“Mendy is traveling to Barcelona and we will see what the problem is – our first impression is he will be out for longer than we thought. We will know more on Thursday. If he is out it will be like with Ilkay Gundogan and I will feel sad for him. He is a unique player with the joy he gives and it is a big setback. We will see in January whether we need to make a new signing.â€

Midfielder Fabian Delph again deputised for Mendy and played well – great news for his footballing flexibility, but a non-starter from a Fantasy sense.

Who is a non-starter come Saturday evening is what will exercise our minds for the meantime.

Kane yet again

A Harry Kane hat-trick steered Spurs safely through what had the potential to be a bit of a Champions League banana skin in Cyprus.

The England striker made it nine goals for the season – seven of which have come in his last three matches on the road – as Spurs scored from their first three shots on target.

Assists in the 3-0 win came from Toby Alderweireld, Moussa Sissoko and Kieran Trippier.

Spurs travelled to Cyprus without key midfielder Christian Eriksen, who fell ill on Sunday.

There is no suggestion that the 26.2%-owned Dane won’t recover in time for the weekend trip to Huddersfield and, in fact, his FPL ownership will have welcomed his absence as their man had started seven of Spurs’ eight matches prior to last night’s fixture.

Others who took no part in Nicosia included Dele Alli and Jan Vertonghen, who were both suspended for the clash.

That should leave a squad relatively fresh for Saturday lunchtime’s match at Huddersfield.

And in Kane (27.9%), they have a forward in consistently devastating away form.

Liverpool miss out in Moscow

Jurgen Klopp cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines as his Liverpool players dominated in Russia only to be held to a second consecutive Champions League draw.

The Reds out-shot their hosts 16-4 but had to make do with just the one goal, from the impressive Philippe Coutinho, for their efforts.

The Brazilian fired home after a neat one-two with Sadio Mane – a combination that can now be reunited in the league as the Senegal international has completed his three-match domestic ban.

Coutinho is already picking up plenty of new owners this week – 89,000 and counting – and he dropped back into the midfield three in Moscow as Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah took the forward roles.

All three were guilty of spurning excellent chances to turn their dominance into goals, and the continued woes of Firmino (25.5%) will be of particular concern to his FPL ownership.

The forward has now scored just the once since the Gameweek 3 mauling of Arsenal and continues to be the subject of heavy sales – 150,000+ making him the most sold player of Gameweek 7 to date.

The trip to Newcastle now looks vital for his Fantasy prospects. Blank again and Firmino will be tasked with break his dry spell in matches with Manchester United and Spurs, arguably the two most efficient defences in the league.

At the back, Trent Alexander-Arnold came in for the suspended Joe Gomez, with the latter likely to return for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle, while left-back Alberto Moreno started in Moscow, which could open the way for Andrew Robertson to make his third league appearance at the weekend.

Klopp, meanwhile, surprised many by giving Loris Karius a run-out in goal and the keeper should probably have made a better job of keeping out the free-kick that handed Moscow an undeserved lead.

Simon Mignolet saved a penalty last time out in the league and it would be a major shock if he fails to return for the Tyneside trip.

Hard to think of an example of a player as good as kaku get so m uch hatred for the most spurious of reasons.it really is clutching at straws.the guy has been delivering the goods since the age of 16 at anderlecht. Playing for poor teams with less chances created, still delivers.kane is a late bloomer by footballing standards yet can do no wrong.he blanks, its never trolling but kaku does it... Both fantastic players but kaku for whatever reason just not appreciated (on here at least)

There's no outrageous reason for it other than he has the first touch of a monster truck and the dribbling of two monster trucks

I'd like to add in try to think of goals he has created for himself out of nothing, few and far between and that'll be more often than not simply because of his size

So hes just big and cumnersome and lucky and has terrible control..the ball is just hitting off him and going in ..thats pretty much the essence of what your saying .how many chances did fowler and lineker create for themselves?

You're taking it personally as if you're his dad or summat. He's a very good striker, his touch isn't the worst but you're making the comparison to Kane and other strikers who are better than him. Compared to them his touch isn't all that good, dribbling is practically non existent

                    Fowler created plenty for himself

Linekar less so but what's your point? I rate both of them as I do Lukaku I'm just not willing to ignore Lukaku's obvious failings

No, i watch football and see and incredible bias in the judgement of these two players and am just wondering why.kaku gets a lot of grief on here even when he gets a haul.

I see it too, I agree with you. I'm just saying the things Lukaku is bad at, which I feel he definitely is nowhere near world class on are more striking to the eye, when you see some of his first touches it sticks in the mind

I'm trying to explain why he might get the grief, not saying he deserves it. He's a marvellous striker and player but there is definite room for improvement

Kane is on a different level to Lukaku in my eyes. Rom is good don't get me wrong but Harry has looked dynamic and prolific the past few seasons, creating space to fire off a shot and getting in good areas. He is more clinical and has the potential to be a world class striker. Lukaku not so much

He has been at a far better side at all times in his career and hardly set world alight when he went out on loan.thats a huge factor.imagine kaku got that luxury.he was deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea and still did it at west brom and everton, who are far from spurs in terms of quality.

There's a reason he has been at far better teams.. he is a far better player. Lukaku scored well for those sides because he was the only attacking option and was fed consistently

Harry Kane is twice the player lukaku is. Harry can create from nothing, lukaku needs to be supplied and is poor in tight spaces and against top defences.

Lukaku or Kane as captain this week? I think both will score but Kane has more chance of exploding with 2/3 goals.

If your point was Lukaku is given more grief than he deserves then I think most people would agree, however there are valid reasons for the grief at times. He's a very good striker and finisher, there are aspects to his game that let him down and his close control and dribbling are two of those things, if you disagree that's fine

Kane hasn't been immune to criticism either, he was labelled a one season wonder, was terrible for England (along with everyone else) and took some awful set pieces which loads of people took the piss out of him for

For those not wildcarding perhaps a punt that is looking ahead to good fixtures on the horizon from GWK 8.

So perhaps a Newcastle option.... or Jamie Vardy in for Firmino?

That's a good one. If I had the money I'd definitely swap him for Mooy this week.

My team is in good shape for GW7, looking only Joselu/Bertrand to move out. But I have only 0.3 ITB. So 0.1 short for Joselu -> Carroll. Maybe I will do Bertrand -> Cresswell. What about JRod? He looked dangerous against Arsenal. I have exact money for him.

Well you did own them in the first place didn't you? 😉 Shaqiri with great stats, pens and at that price seems like a good one week punt as any. Got Jones/Eriksen to take care of now though so probably won't happen, if that calms your nerves 🙂

Ha, sadly my choice are far more limited - good to see all the options I can't afford though 😉

Only have 5.7 for a mid or 5.0 for a defender.

For me I'm looking at Cresswell for the chance of pts at both ends of the pitch - only Davies can better him for chances created among defenders. And Swansea look poor in attack on the road.

                        Choupo Motting another option.

Forget the one week punt and save yourself 0.1m instead by selling a player who is dropping or buying one who is rising before GW8.

                    30. Lacazette - he's about the same anytime scorer odds as Kane for this weekend.

Going off on a tangent here - with Chelsea v City I've resigned myself to a mediocre score this GW and am looking ahead. I'll not WC over the break so I've made a double transfer ahead of price changes: Jesus to Morata and Mendy to Azpi. I think GW8 I'll be sorted providing I don't incur any further injuries.

Very reasonable strategy. I have none from either team (but have 3 ManU, 3 Saints, 3 Spurs) and am intending Lukaku to Morata and Jones to Azpi;but only after this weekend passes and with my saved transfer. And then to WC after GW11. You have obviously chosen the most courageous option, this week.

As soon as GW7 closes there's a 2-week gap for international break.

Can anyone help me with regards to the free hit chip.

What happens if you take players out who you have value tied up in?

Say for example I take Hemed out, I bought him at 4.9, he's now 5, when I get my team back next week, would I have to find .1 from somewhere?

I've e mailed them but it's really confusing, would hate to use it and then have to take a hit to make my 15 players fit back within my budget.

It's not very clear in the rules.

Thanks Irbox, so by my reading, Alonso was 7.1 at the deadline, he'll drop tonight, do I revert back to him at 7.1 or will he be 7?

If he drops you get him back at the reduced price of 7.0. Likewise if any players rise, you get them at their new price

The Free Hit chip only gives you players for 1 week and then your original team prior to the players brought in come back automatically.

But I think you need to play the chip prior to making the transfers (unlike the wildcard) - otherwise how will the game know which players you wanted to be brought in permanently for that week and which you only wanted as part of the 'free hit'.

As in, I have .5 in my bank, will that have to be used to get my original team back in due to some players being in between rises.

As others have said. You get your squad back regardless of price changes so it's not away to avoid drops but you also don't lose a rise either.

Perfect, thanks Mark, not worried about saving a drop, more a case of not being able to afford to have my team back meaning that I would have to downsize a player with my next teansfer.

Activated it, this seems like a great week to use it.

City at Chelsea could be anything, don't need to risk it being a tight game.

                        United home to Palace
                        Arsenal home to Brighton
                        Spurs away to Huddersfield
                        Liverpool at Newcastle
                        Ritchie's set pieces against Liverpool.

If it helps to gain significant progress in leagues and ranks than its served it's purposes, ideal time is for the league cup final weekend but we've all played this game long enough and know how to prepare for those, let's see if it can be used for a big rank leap while the ranks are still close together.

But basically your squad reverts and it's as if they never went away - you gain any price rises and suffer any price falls that happened during your hit week.

after the everton game the thinking was jesus was a cruel victim of the walker red card. with sterling replacing him pre 60 again last night i'm starting to think it was more performance related, and even if not him being a make-weight for pep tweaking shape is far from ideal. think it's a 3rd strike for me, even if you see it as a short-term positive making a start v chelsea more likely it's another pre-60 substitution coming the week he got a full rest and the week sane and sterling started scoring for fun. he's arguably in the same bracket as stelring and sane now

He looked totally fed-up when subbed last night, Pep grabbed him by the head and shouted into his face... it looked supportive but Jesus wasn't laughing 😆

I had fires to put out in my team going into this gameweek and I did a mini Wildcard with 2 FT and a hit.

2 of the players I brought in to put out the fires - Chalobah and Mendy - then get season ending injuries straight away. Talk about your luck running.

Anyway, I think I'm literally going to hobble on, patch together a team and then Wildcard in GW8.

My question is.... Would you take a 1 gameweek punt that replaces:

                          A) Mendy - this frees up more money and let's me get almost any defender

                          B) Fraser - I will only be able to get a £5.8m midfielder but I will prevent a 0.1m drop in team value,

So Mendy for the better punt or Fraser to protect TV going into a Wildcard?

Mendy to Bellerin could be big points

Defo Mendy. I'm thinking either Valencia or Kola given their home ties to weaker sides.

I have to have at least one Englishman, and never Captain a player against Hammers. I broke the latter this week, but circumstances were against me. 😀

Never have Jamie Vardy or use a player vs Spurs. Also MUN + MCI 1 player maximum (two years ago Kun, last year Ibra, now Kun again) and no Chelsea strikers. Also have always at least 2-3 players with ownership lower than 5%.

like the latter, always more fun to have some differentials, albeit if you strike gold with them they quickly become well over 5%

Kane. In form and more explosive than Lukaku plus has been good away from home.

Cons: Lukaku's ownership and will more than likely score

Kane is a beast away from home. I think Palace will do a good job of stifling Lukaku this weekend. They actually looked alright first half vs City

In the same boat, at the moment I'm gonna go Kane. Going to OT for the united game though so could be made to regret!

I think Lukaku will score against Palace. Just feel Kane has the potential to score MORE against Huddersfield.

Kane: con - playing a team that has only conceded s one goal

Kaku: pro - playing bottom team in league at home

Think palace will look to mark Kaku out the game and go from there, first blank incoming. You heard it here first.

Both have form/fixture. Cpl worse defensive form than Hud.

despite everything i still feel palace under hodgson will be/are a stronger defence than huddersfield. and tottenham are arguably more free-flowing going forward than man utd. i'd lean towards kane

Yeah. The free hit chip means you can change your entire squad for 1 week and then it reverts to your original squad for the following week. It is poorly named as same people will take the literal meaning of saving a -4 hit

Hang on a minute. I've had JRod in my team since gw1 (yeah I know I'm getting rid on wc). His value is now 5.8 from the original 6.0, but my selling value is 5.8 as well. Shouldn't it go price 5.9 -> SV 5.9, then when the price is 5.7 -> SV 5.8 instead of losing selling value on every drop? Am I being stupid or what.

When they lose value you lose the same value. When they gain value, you just get half.

That logic only applies on price raises on the original buying price. Any falls or rises below your buying price will be 1:1

Just seen that if I hadn't changed my team from week 1 I'd have 353 points..

I've only gained 8 points from all the relentless hours of research and chatting rubbish on this page. Utterly depressing

Noob question - if I'm planning on WCing this IB I should hit the button straight after the deadline on Sat right? Or at least before Sat night price rises.

You can make as many transfers as you want, affecting price rises, and then remember to hit the wildcard later on in the break to erase all the point hits, but you've already contributed to prices rising / falling, which you don't do after hitting wildcard.

Just don't forget to activate it to erase the -36 hit

So basically the moment the first game of GW7 starts (i.e. Sat 12:30) that is when you start making the transfer changes for all your players and you will get lots of negative points BUT before GW8 deadline comes I need to click use wildcard...is that right?

definitely lost on last post and not just ignored https://personaltao.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/Ego.jpg

imo it's still up in the air whether lukaku, vardy, firmino and aguero are on pens. lots of interesting things could still happen, take firmino for example, from memory he was in almost zero RMTs pre-season then suddenly when we knew he was on pens he flirted with being a template pick. it's annoying to not have these answers but also kind of exciting, being kept on our toes!

Think Shakespeare confirmed Vardy is still on them but if he keeps doing the same thing and just blasting them down the middle then he'll lose them soon. He's pretty terrible at pens.

Pep and a few of the City players came out and said Kun was on pens, but was just a nice guy and decided to allow Sterling take it.

The others, still kinda up in the air yeah.

exactly! of the top sides only arsenal and tottenham seem to have clear penalty situations so far this season, plus you'd always back hazard to be on chelsea pens

After the Everton match, Mourinho said Mata is the first penalty taker. So Lukaku isn't on penalties at least when Mata is in play. As a Lukaku owner, I'm actually delighted about that; he is a horrible penalty taker. He always shoots to the left and not even the top corner, so definitely more than 50% of missing unless he learns to shoot to the other side or even the middle occasionally.

With Vardy, I'm not sure if he will still be on pens after this week, but it's a similar situation with him, he always shoots to the middle.

really lame point and a week too late but had personally written aguero off as an fpl option now due to no longer getting assists (on top of feeling he's lost a yard of pace). that's an interesting addition to his game this season. assists always the underrated factor which make a good option essential imo. think back to the really essential players strikers of the past, suarez and van persie. there were other strikers who could get to 25+ goals, but they didn't also get the 15 assists to turn 2 pointers into 5 pointers and the 6 pointers into 12 pointers.

JRod for me. Looked dangerous against Arsenal and probably should have scored.

Key question for me approaching a potential GW8 or 9 WC, is whether with Spurs fixtures for 10 and 11, it's sensible to keep my triple combo (Kane Eriksen Davies), or if it's ok to drop one of the front two.

If Kane goes I'd be tempted into an Aguero Jesus Morata front line at present. I'd Eriksen goes, I'd probably be looking at David Silva in, with Kane Jesus Morata front line. Slightly uncomfortable at the prospect of losing either to be honest...any thoughts?

Silva is playing very well so B might be a good way of spreading the risk whilst still holding a key attacking player in an in form attacking team. If not, go A.

Interesting discussion point . Gw9 seems a more obvious woldcard for those not keeping spurs . I'm inclined to drop all spurs assets for at least 2 weeks. No cash loss makes it more likely

Aguero being sub 8minutes from the end indicate he will start V Chelc? Will pep really bench his striker when he's in form and playing the prem champs? I can't see him being benched, what do you guys think?
City look more threatening with him on the pitch.

Nah he will start. More likely to be rested v Stoke after IB

He probably won't play much for ARG so even that rest vs Stoke is questionable. 😉 I'll just play him and forget about it. He can always do a lot of damage in a limited time. 😉 Won't captain him in games where there's more risk for rest, though. 😉

His minutes don't seem to be being carefully managed, unlike Jesus's.

I feel like Jesus was subbed based on performance rather than to save legs.. I would rather own aguero than Jesus right now imo
