Sunday’s events did little to solve our striker problem.

We began the day scouting Alexandre Lacazette, who chose to blank in an Arsenal home match for the first time – frustrating the 265,000 who had acquired his services with the Brighton fixture in mind.

The Frenchman was also withdrawn early, with 20 minutes remaining, as Arsene Wenger handed Olivier Giroud some oxygen. That will always be an issue.

Clearly, Lacazette doesn’t fit into the same untouchable bracket as Alexis Sanchez; Wenger feels comfortable hooking and even omitting the striker from his starting line-up when he sees fit.

Combine that with the lack of away goals to this point, and it’s clear that the Gunners option has much ground to make up before we can consider him in the same bracket as Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku.

Even as a third striker, we’d have to keep Alvaro Morata and Gabriel Jesus ahead in the pecking order for now.

So where does Roberto Firmino sit in those ranks?

His omission from Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet was perhaps no big surprise; we were braced for it.

However, it arrives as another telling blow to the Brazilian’s stock at a time when we desperately needed him to show form and cement his status as a third striker.

Now we will surely continue to see his ownership and value plummet over the break, with the confidence of his 1.2 million owners broken by a run of blanks and Klopp’s selection.

Daniel Sturridge hardly passed his audition to claim the central role, and Firmino will surely be re-instated for the visit of Manchester United in Gameweek 8, regardless of his long-haul flight home.

But Liverpool’s attack are clearly faltering. They relied on the genius of Philippe Coutinho for today’s breakthrough, but it’s not the chance creation that’s broken – it’s purely their finishing.

The numbers show that Klopp’s attack have averaged 20 goal attempts over their last two Gameweeks, with three big chances per match. But only 20% of their efforts have hit the target, compared with 41% from Gameweeks 1-5.

Sturridge wasn’t the solution, and Firmino will return, but is the damage already done?

There will be some who end up holding Firmino just because of the lack of alternatives: we have Jamie Vardy and a cast of mis-firing, inconsistent candidates at 8.5 or below.

Just like Lukaku, we may look for a change but arrive at Gabriel Jesus as the only route.

The Brazilian is clearly an extremely credible candidate, with the fixtures to fly. But he’s also a player who – by his own recent admission – was playing the role of a “winger” or not playing at all when Sergio Aguero was fit.

We can settle on Jesus for now, but few of us will believe that it’s for keeps.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seeing a lot of WC team drafts that dont seem to have an obvious advantage over a lot of peoples existing teams. Not seeing a lot of Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho etc just the usual Kane, Lukaku et al.

I think Sanchez is going to be an expensive niche this season.

Unless he becomes better value than Lacazette not sure why anyone would buy him.

Now that Lacazette has pens if you want an Arsenal captain surely it would be him.

Lacazette hammered the post today on another day a big score.

          He looks nice pick.

I suppose the benefit of the big three strikeforce price structure means you can jump on Morata/Jesus/Lacazette depending on fixture & form.

I'm not at all sure I've done right in WC-ing. Got 72 points this weekend and slaughtered my ML opposition, but have still played my WC.
There was no way I could do minor surgery to change 2 strikers to 3, and I wanted to reflect the fixture shift by upping City, reducing United and bringing in Leicester coverage.

I've kept my 5-2-3 format; what do you think of this?

        Schmeichel, Elliot
        Azpi, Bavies, Otamendi, Jones, Ward
        Coutinho, Sterling (Fellaini, RLC, Carroll)
        Kane (perma-cap), Morata, Jesus

I don't know, I think that looks pretty brilliant. Assuming Morata is back fit after the IB, that front line is killer. Sterling now really has a chance to shine and even if Pep happens to rest him, you can plug in RLC or Carroll reliably for a couple of points.

Only question: will Jones stay nailed-on? What's your plan if he does not?

You obviously haven't looked close enough. Most are beefing up their Ds, preparing to play 4 or even 5 defenders in a 4 3 3 or 5 2 3.

The 2nd international break is traditionally a big wildcard week. With the much vaunted fixture swing in the offing many managers will be looking to play their chip and make an early jump onto any possible double risers with a view to increasing their TV. They shouldn't get their hopes up.

I played my wildcard last week. The main reason I did so was because so many of the players I wanted were about to rise (many I thought would rise twice). It didn't happen. Morata was the only double riser but even that was only because of the Aguero injury.

The first rise wasn't a problem, I had 6 players who went up 0.1m in the first 2 days. That 2nd rise however just didn't come by the Saturday 2.15 deadline when I could ditch them and bank a 0.1m profit. Sure Morata made it over the line (just) but I wanted Morata in my team.

GW7 was a perfect storm for a double rise. Players who had performed the previous GW were already close to rising, Utd, Spurs, Pool and Arsenal all had attractive fixtures the next week, and there were a low number of wildcarders (only 4.6% compared to 8.3% in GW6) and yet it just didn't happen.

Save yourself the pain and just choose the team you want because you're not going to bank those double risers and if you try you might see someone you actually want suddenly costing 0.1m more despite only being at 80% on FPL stats.

Oh and Kane might well rise twice but are you seriously considering selling him to bank the 0.1m profit? In previous seasons it's been possible to buy a bunch of players you don't want and cash in on them before the deadline boosting your SV. That is not happening this season. What on earth makes you think that in a popular week for wildcards there will be 3 or 4 double risers when the most players to have risen twice in a single GW this season has been 2? I really don't have an axe to grind here. My post is just a heads up. Last GW 4 players unexpectedly rose in price when they were in the low 80% target range on FPL stats. That is more of a risk than hoping for a double rise on a player you don't want.

This. My concern is that we may get 3-4 double risers, but they'll be players I want on my squad going forward (e.g., Morata, Kane, etc.).

        Absolutely not.

Kane bad example as I can't imagine anyone would get him then get rid to bank 0.1. You already have Kane, or your bring him in and keep.

Apart from him, don't think anyone will rise twice. But I guess we will have to wait and see.

The best reason for playing a wk during IB is to avoid hits ... 2 weeks meddling tends to get expensive

I can't see any benefit in selling players who might double rise ... surely they are the in form / good players
Play a wildcard to sell Kane, Silva, Monreal?

The other negative is that many players who you might want have probably just come back from IB and travelling and are about to have their worst week, so is this the week to get them in?

Good advice. I also wildcarded last week as the price changes would have meant I wouldn't have been able to get the team I wanted this week.

Out went Firmino and Jesus (amongst others), in came Kane, Morata, A King, and Ward, who have all risen. Got my highest gameweek rank of the season and climbed nearly 700k places.

There have already been so many rises and so many drops. And there will be lots of transfer activity near the deadline too. I could almost wager that there will be 4-5 double risers.

      This is absolutely correct.

Tried this over the last few years and it worked, but things have now changed over the last 2 IB.

The number of transfer required for a rise has increased in a IB because in 2 weeks you should get more transfers than in one week - this has been levelled off by FPL Towers meaning more activity is needed.

The awareness has increased meaning more people try this on a WC, so there is more activity but WCs don’t contribute to price rises.

In my humble opinion, you will get a few double risers, but probably just Kane.

What you can do though is avoid drops, make .1 on players you want but wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.

I Wild Carded a few weeks ago when there were 5 or 6 players on the verge of rising and it took another week for a few of those to convert in to double rises. Took a .1 profit buying and selling Aguero though 🙂

I can only see 2 possible double risers - Kane and Jesus - but I wouldn't be that surprised if only Kane rises twice. I don't see many people being willing to sell either of those back for a 0.1m profit either.

But you're failing to see what it means. He was eventually going to score, from so many good chances and opportunities. He's a professional player playing in the PL, he was eventually going to score, having had so many oppotunities.

Yeah, but Joselu exposes the general flaw of using xG as a predictor. It assumes that all players are equally good finishers and that a shot from 12 yards is equally likely to lead to a goal irrespective of who is shooting. That's plainly not the case.

You have to adjust any statistical measure according to your judgement of the player. Joselu is good at getting in scoring positions, he just isn't very good at scoring from them. Never has been. That's why he was sold for £5m.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

I keep saying this about xG. A high xG is great for FPL as the player is getting in great goalscoring positions. You just then have to use your judgement on whether he's a good finisher and/or in form.

      2. ScratchingTheMud
        • 15 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

Very good point. Players like Joselu will almost always undershoot their xG, whereas you'd expect the likes of Kane to do significantly better than the average. After all, that's all xG is. Not enough is made of that. There's a common misconception that players will regress to the mean etc or be on the brink of a goal scoring run but too much statistical analysis will blind you to the obvious: some players are simply much better finishers than others.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

Players will and do regress to the median. But it is their median, not a general one.

People like to look at 4-week stats as if they tell you who is good. They don't. They tell you who has been lucky/unlucky and/or maybe who is in a purple patch of form/confidence and who isn't.

I always feel that macro stats are at least as useful as micro stats. People were arguing about Kane's 'poor form' earlier in the season but when a proven goalscorer like him is getting so many chances it's only a matter of time. The macro view helps you to put short-term numbers in context. Out of context they mean very little.

          1. ScratchingTheMud
            • 15 Years
            8 years, 2 months ago

Yes I agree with all of that, very well said.

The distinction between micro and macro data is a very important one, as is interpreting stats on a case by case basis. I think that one of the common traps when making transfers or playing a wild card is to place too much emphasis on last week's game data. As you say, a couple of weeks data out of context may be indicative of form, but they may also be quite arbitrary and misleading - Harry Kane's season to date is a good example of that. I find that people are often seduced and beguiled by a major points haul and transfer in a player without considering the following: what is his expected value over the next few weeks, how does this expected value compare to his price, what losses to the rest of the side will I likely incur by this investment. Having a slavish adherence to short term stats will not only not answer those questions but will also more likely sweep you into groupthink, which can be quite arbitrary in itself.

        2. noquarternt
          • 10 Years

xG shows the chances a player is taking. There are players who consistently outshoot their xG like Kane, yes, but the magnitude is important. Joselu was at the point where his goal total and xG were the widest in the league. If you believe in any kind of statistics, you had to see he was eventually going to score.

          1. ScratchingTheMud
            • 15 Years
            8 years, 2 months ago

Yes but surely every player is going to score at some point? Stats like xG can be helpful but perhaps they should be tailored to the player in question... Some players will simply have a poorer conversion rate than others. Sterling, for example, won't be anywhere near as good as Kane in this department - he'll consistently get outperformed. But you wouldn't necessarily know that if you were only to look at xG.

            1. noquarternt
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 2 months ago

I think there's definitely scope to tailor it to include the player's historical conversion rate. But when you see a huge disparity between xG and total goals, odds are that the gap will close. Joselu had the widest in the league of a player who gets plenty of mins.

When a Premier League player, picked by a Premier League manager consistently has chances created for him that the average player would score. Eventually he is going to score. Your subjectiveness comes into it slightly, but stats don't lie.

If someone says he was lucky to score they're misunderstanding xG. He keeps getting in goal scoring positions and he's probably had a few chances in recent weeks where he's been unlucky not to score. Odds are it'll even out.

Firmino --> Vardy looks a good move right ?

    - Vardy in form with 3 goals in last 4. Firmino has 4 blanks in last 4

    - Vardy has better fixtures in next 4 (WBA swa EVE stk) vs Firmino- (MUN tot HUD whu)

    - Vardy nailed on. Firmino has sturridge competing for his place.

    - Firmino likely to fall in price (0.2 likely). Already faced a price drop for me.

In response to this article. Why do you need to play 3 up front? What is wrong with 4-4-2?

You can go Kane and Morata up front and then have Sterling / Sane and Silva in midfield if you don't rate Jesus.

This place is obsessed with 3 strikers for some reason. 442 for me too. Gives so much flexibility to the defence and midfield not having a third striker like Vardy/Firmino or really top heavy with 3 10m+ options.

Not saying 3 strikers is wrong, just that a lot of people on here take 3 strikers as gospel and completely rule out any formation that doesn't have 3 strikers. There are different ways to play the game and different ways to be successful.

Which option do you think is best?

    A) Alonso 5.4m Vardy
    B) Daniels Chuopo Morata
    C) Wimmer Sterling Vardy

    Cheers 🙂

A Chelsea defender is all the Chelsea I'll have imo at the moment. Keeping Jesus ahead of Morata.

Why are people massively selling Alli before the match against Bournemouth? Is it just his weak form recently or I am missing something (could not see the match against Huddersfield)?

He's not playing particularly well but still hit the post. Deserves another go against BOU if you have him imo.

Just the form I think. I'm a bit surprised because it's not like any replacement midfielder had a massive week. I guess people are looking at City's fixtures.

Silva's the leading transfers in this week. I really want to get Sane as well though.

May be those without Kane decided to spend 2 transfers to get him in and may be the main reason is moving from Alli to Kane then?

Ive had Kane for the whole season. Every week he's blanked, I've captained him. Every week he's had a brace, I've captained someone else. Just so unlucky 🙁

In wonderland over my start to the season! 436 points, lowest score 53, and only made 4 transfers! Actually didn't make a move last week with 2 FT's.

That's with Kane(c) every week too.

    TIme to wildcard:

    Foster/Elliott
    Mbemba, Mariappa, ALONSO, Yoshida, Daniels
    Gross, Alli, Brady, Mkhi, CARROLL
    MORATA, LUKAKU, FIRMINO

Would definitely play with the 5 highlighted, bring in Kane, but also likely change Mbemba and Mariappa if fixtures allow and also review GK options.

    Kolasinac, Jones, Cedric, Bavies, Lowe
    Mkhi, Ritchie (Gross, Richarlison, Tarroll)
    (K)ane, Kaku, Morata

Mkhi will be getting moved some Man City cover next FT
