Sunday’s events did little to solve our striker problem.

We began the day scouting Alexandre Lacazette, who chose to blank in an Arsenal home match for the first time – frustrating the 265,000 who had acquired his services with the Brighton fixture in mind.

The Frenchman was also withdrawn early, with 20 minutes remaining, as Arsene Wenger handed Olivier Giroud some oxygen. That will always be an issue.

Clearly, Lacazette doesn’t fit into the same untouchable bracket as Alexis Sanchez; Wenger feels comfortable hooking and even omitting the striker from his starting line-up when he sees fit.

Combine that with the lack of away goals to this point, and it’s clear that the Gunners option has much ground to make up before we can consider him in the same bracket as Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku.

Even as a third striker, we’d have to keep Alvaro Morata and Gabriel Jesus ahead in the pecking order for now.

So where does Roberto Firmino sit in those ranks?

His omission from Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet was perhaps no big surprise; we were braced for it.

However, it arrives as another telling blow to the Brazilian’s stock at a time when we desperately needed him to show form and cement his status as a third striker.

Now we will surely continue to see his ownership and value plummet over the break, with the confidence of his 1.2 million owners broken by a run of blanks and Klopp’s selection.

Daniel Sturridge hardly passed his audition to claim the central role, and Firmino will surely be re-instated for the visit of Manchester United in Gameweek 8, regardless of his long-haul flight home.

But Liverpool’s attack are clearly faltering. They relied on the genius of Philippe Coutinho for today’s breakthrough, but it’s not the chance creation that’s broken – it’s purely their finishing.

The numbers show that Klopp’s attack have averaged 20 goal attempts over their last two Gameweeks, with three big chances per match. But only 20% of their efforts have hit the target, compared with 41% from Gameweeks 1-5.

Sturridge wasn’t the solution, and Firmino will return, but is the damage already done?

There will be some who end up holding Firmino just because of the lack of alternatives: we have Jamie Vardy and a cast of mis-firing, inconsistent candidates at 8.5 or below.

Just like Lukaku, we may look for a change but arrive at Gabriel Jesus as the only route.

The Brazilian is clearly an extremely credible candidate, with the fixtures to fly. But he’s also a player who – by his own recent admission – was playing the role of a “winger” or not playing at all when Sergio Aguero was fit.

We can settle on Jesus for now, but few of us will believe that it’s for keeps.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Have both on my WC!

Here's my WC. Know the bench is light, can improve it if I move Lukaku-> Morata but this is first draft and already hit the button:

      Elliot
      Davies - Stones - Jones - Ward
      Eriksen - Silva - Sterling
      Kane - Lukaku - Vardy

      Subs: Krul - 4.5mid - 4.5mid - 4m defender

How many have had a good GW and still WC'ing? Finding it hard to pull the trigger and feel like I need more evidence to change players around when they've done decently. No City or Chelsea players here but have 2 FT.

P.S. Hate when this site sometimes automatically logs me out when I've clicked Post. End up losing the message typed out too.

I have the same predicament. I'm leaning towards saving it because a lot of the big hitting players I'd look to get in are either injured or have a poor price/value quotient. I also figure I can get 2 of Chelsea/city in with 2FT

Yeah, I already have 2FT and could easily transfer Mkhi, Salah out for a City guy or 2. Just don't want to WC because I don't know whom I really want and the IB along with CL complicates matters.

Silva / Sane / Sterling all have their pros and cons. Choose the one you prefer and go with it. I went with both Silva and Sterling at the moment in my initial WC draft, may move one out if I end up building the courage to move Lukaku to Jesus or Morata.

Not with 2 FTs or any money in the bank. Mkhi could move out to a City mid or Firmino to Vardy for free for example, etc. and would be just fine IMO.

Morata is hamstrung, so wait and see, definitely would not WC now, I'd monitor INTL break. If you pick up 1-2 injuries for example then play it. Otherwise both of those moves are sensible.

My WC team for example has about half of those players in it... then again that's just half... I sold Mkhi and Firmino and Alli on mine as the primary fall guys (didn't own Kane). On 408 pts currently.

      Elliot
      Davies - Stones - Jones - Ward
      Eriksen - Silva - Sterling

I think now is the time to do it if you still have it. Get some city and Chelsea coverage. Lose Mkhi and Firmino as well as sorting out yoir cheap midfielder situation. Foster is also not the pick we thought, better options out there. Even Salah seems expendable for at least weeks and by that time you could identify who Liverpools key asset will be.

It's not a bad team but I don't think you'll have a better opportunity to use the wildcard well between now and Christmas.

I'd love to still have mine.

Yeah, main concern is the situation in defense with only 3 playing defs and my two 4.5 mids

Losing ground in MLs too. Hoping loading up on City and Chelsea will make up some of it in the coming weeks

Wildcard activated after a reasonable start. Team was not well positioned for fixture shifts, and needed to jettison some debris.

Focused on 4-3-3 going forward. Rotation ideas for 3rd mid:

Ritchie/GroB/Fellaini provides: EVE, CRY, SOT, BOU, NEW, WAT/BHA, CRY

    GroB/Doucoure/RLC provides: EVE, new/whu, WHU, swa, STK/WHU, STK/new, CRY

Thoughts on these? Others? Bad idea?

Choupo-Moting really should be considered. He rotates wonderfully with Brady/Burnley. You'd get this:

WHU, BOU, NEW, LEI, SWA, cry, bou, SWA, WAT, STK, WHU, WBA, hud, hud, NEW, cry, HUD, WAT.

Was in a similar predicament. Would have held, but needed to flush SOTx2, Firmino, Alli and Mikhi. Also had no CHE or MCI. I think you'll likely be in OK either way. Maybe flip Valencia to a cheaper CHE or MCI def and spread the funds?

Cheers. Ive just pulled the trigger. Went with Valencia to Monreal and moved Salah to Coutinho. Hopefully will catch the.1s there. Would your above not work better with Richarlison?

Maybe, but he's been a bit injured and that could be hampering him. Not entirely convinced with him or Leicester right now.

so who is the winner of Sane / Sterling here?
note : i pick Sane because his assist and goal attempts better than Sterling.. How about you and why?

Leaning Sane because he's a better player. Sterling bit of a poacher. Not ruling out doubling up short term

im doubling up one of them with D.Silva.. Silva & Kdb is the masterpiece

Sterling plays as a striker and plays double the mins that Sané does. Can't understand why Sané is mentioned in the same breath.

It's a little skewed. When Aguero and Jesus are both fit then Sterling is preferred in a more central role, but now Aguero isn't in the picture then Sané is as good if not better option as Sterling.

last 2 GW, Sane played 174 mins and Sterling 151 mins

Run the comparison tool between Sane and Sterling ONLY on yesterday's match - the only one in which Kun wasn't available. I think you might change your mind. (The eye test in this week's match also should change your mind, to be honest.)

Yes, seriously. It's the only example of how they are likely going to line up and attack while Kun is out. With Jesus and Aguero up top they ran a different system. What they did, tactically, yesterday with Sane vs. Sterling was very noticeable to the eye. The stats simply back it up.

              🙂

The truth is, there isn't much between them. I actually think Sane is the better and more sound player, too. But I have to give Sterling credit. He's been playing much better, and Pep has figured out how to play to his strengths. The ball he lofted across for Jesus's volley was sublime, a word I don't think anyone used to be able to use about Sterling's game a year ago.

    Which option is better
A)Hazard and Jesus for Lukaku and alli
B)Silva/Sane and Morata(waiting for injury report) for Miki and Lukaku?

I'd ride out Alli's drop. Bournemouth next and banned from international and CL still.

Yep, me too. I don't see any reason to see before Bournemouth though after being rested.

If he blanks then can sell for almost any other mid.

Yeah exactly won't take him at out playing against bournemouth but after that game spurs got some tough fixtures so would take him out after that game

Took him out on wildcard but would keep if not on WC. Davies/Eriksen/Kane preferred three.

I definitely wouldn't bring Hazard in just yet. Still think he's s couplr of weeks away from hitting form. And it's better to be on him a week late, than 4 weeks early
