Suspensions

The current lull in domestic action allows us an opportunity to check in on the latest band of miscreants to dominate our Suspension Tightrope ahead of Gameweek 8.

Essentially, the Suspension Tightrope widget keeps a tally of cards accumulated from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League.

It is available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

We’ll update the widget after each Gameweek, and roll out articles such as this one, which go over the Fantasy implications of the cards collected.

This includes the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and climb onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

As mentioned in our first Suspension Tightrope article of the season, the FA have altered the curfew rules for players accumulating yellow and red cards in 2017/18.

According to this season’s FA handbook.

A Player accumulating five cautions will be automatically suspended for one first-team competitive match if he has accumulated those five cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League19
EFL19
National League23

A Player accumulating ten cautions will be automatically suspended for two FTCM if he has accumulated those ten cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League32
EFL37
National League37

Basically, players have to avoid five bookings over their respective team’s first 19 Premier League matches in order to sidestep a suspension.

Similarly, they must steer clear of 10 cautions over their side’s 32 opening top-flight matches to prevent a ban.

From a Fantasy point of view, then, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards.

And Gameweek 32 – on Saturday March 31 – is currently the curfew for 10 yellow cards.

However, we’ve recently spoken to the FA for some clarification on this matter and they have confirmed that, regardless of when their fixtures fall, the 19th and 32nd Premier League fixtures are the cut-off points for five and ten bookings respectively.

So if Arsenal, for example, had a match postponed in November, which later fell after December 23rd (ie, the current date when 19 Gameweeks could be completed), then their players would still be liable to a suspension in that 19th fixture.

The second cut-off point is particularly pertinent, then, bearing in mind that the final of the Carabao Cup will take place in Gameweek 28 and the FA Cup Quarter Finals fall in Gameweek 31.

Those teams involved in either of those will face a postponed fixture and, therefore, their players will have a curfew for 10 cards extended.

Any ban to the current crop of players on four yellows – Palace’s Jason Puncheon, Southampton’s Oriol Romeu, Swansea’s Leroy Fer and West Ham right-back Pablo Zabaleta – would have minimal Fantasy impact.

Lower down, though, there are some big-hitters who currently sit just two yellows shy of a single-match suspension

Chelsea duo David Luiz and Marcos Alonso, along with Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, are among the 11 most owned defenders in FPL.

Worryingly, Alonso – boasting a 17.7% ownership – has already surpassed his tally of two yellows in the Premier League from last season.

Otamendi has collected a yellow card in three of the last five Gameweeks and, having earned nine bookings in each of the last two seasons, faces a tough task to avoid toppling off the Tightrope.

Potentially, once they have collected a fourth yellow, their managers could look to manage their respective fixtures in order to avoid picking up a ban for a “big match†against their league rivals.

So in Alonso’s case, Chelsea have a fixture against Manchester United in Gameweek 11. A booking in either Gameweek 8 or 9 could see him protected in the Gameweek 10 trip to Bournemouth.

For Otamendi, the clash with Arsenal – also in Gameweek 11 – looks the hotspot. So Pep Guardiola will be very wary of playing the Argentine in Gameweek 10 at West Brom, should the defender pick up a card in either Gameweek 8 or 9.

On the plus side, neither Otamendi or Alonso would seem likely to be called into action for their respective Carabao Cup ties which lie between Gameweeks 9 and 10 with this scenario in mind.

Or being cynical about it, back-to-back bookings in the next two Gameweeks would even allow them to serve out the suspension in the Carabao Cup, giving them the midweek off and getting the ban out of the way in advance.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie is the other standout name here, having served up four assists in the opening seven.

The Scotland international was booked three times in the first four Gameweeks but has now gone three league matches without incurring the referee’s wrath.

Finally, Brighton’s Tomer Hemed is the only player suspended from domestic duties in the Premier League. After serving the first of a three-match ban last weekend, he won’t return to action until the Gameweek 10 home clash against Southampton.

That match against the Saints is the first of four home matches in six for Chris Hughton’s side, which also includes a trip to Swansea City.

Having bagged two goals and an assist in his last two outings at the Amex, Hemed – at 4.9 – could yet emerge as a valid option for those on the lookout for a cut-price pick in attack.

Thinking of buying Otamendi, this article is interesting as it highlights he's almost guaranteed a ban before too long (hardly a surprise based on how he plays the game). Stones worth considering as an alternative or is his place in the team too shaky from a rotation point of view?

I'd go with Stones. Less cards and I sense a goal coming

Whole rotation argument seems to be based on Stones being benched for one game (Bou I think) rather than Otamendi.

I'm not convinced that will be the case next time one needs benching for Kompany. Could be it's otamendi's turn next.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Budget enablers

This applies to those on a wildcard and those simply looking to downgrade a player to free up funds.

Who are the best budget enablers out there?

As they will most likely be benched most weeks the key looks to be value and ensuring you can put as much of your budget into the first XI as you can and leave as little cash as possible on the bench.

But at the same time you want them to at least play, retain value and offer a chance of returns – should they be called upon, as they will be over Christmas.

Here’s a small selection to get the discussion going.

    Kevin Wimmer
    Stoke
    4.4

He comes with a rotation risk but with Indi out until the end of October he looks safe for now. For those with a Burnley defender already this centre back offers a superb rotation partner with a strong upcoming fixture list after the Potters drop by the Etihad in Gameweek 8. From Gameweek 9 Stoke’s fixture list is (BOU, wat, LEI, bha, cpl).

    Federico Fernandez
    Swansea
    4.5

Cheaper than Naughton he offers better bonus potential too – beating his team mate in the FPL BPS table and earning extra points on two occasions. For those not looking at Fabianski he looks to be the best, cheapest route into a Swansea fixture list that includes home clashes with Huddersfield, Brighton and Bournemouth in the next six.

    Mauroune Fellaini
    Manchester United
    4.9

Feeling lucky punk? You’ll need it to invest in Jose Mourinho’s wild horse in midfield. Lethal at set pieces the Belgian was once part of a power five so has pedigree to do well. With Pogba out long term he looks nailed on for starts. With the 4.5 midfield list looking downright awful it may pay to spend a little more on bringing in the cavalry.

The double pivot of RLC & Carroll looks great wouldn’t want to spend the 0.4 extra on Fellaini as he might not be in the starting 11 come November.

Interested in Wimmer he could be a great option to rotate with Ward for the 4th defender position.

Wimmer great if you're doing that rotation with Ward. But Ward can be played next 9 out of 11 so I might skip that rotation and rotate with a midfielder (Loftus-Cheek).

Not really sold on Stoke. If they look good you can always hop on that rotation later.

I got King in for 4.4 too before his rise.

good thing about that is that price falls for mids in that price range are really slow so when it comes he just reverts back to the price we paid for him. 🙂

He is just as productive - ie not - as RLC, Carroll and he rest of the rabble.

Also means that for this fan of 196070s songwriters I can field Carroll King in my midfield 😉

What do people think about Delph for 4.5? I know he's OOP but watching City against Chelsea, those full back positions look dangerous for attacking returns in a very attacking team. With Mendy out for a while - could he nail down that place?

You miss my point I think, get RLC for example as your 5th mid @ 4.5, who will comfortably outsource Delph over the next few months. Then you get in one of the above defenders I mentioned who get more clean sheet points than Delph.

Think Yedlins worth a mention at 4.4m although maybe less so for Elliott owners (which seems to be almost everyone on here). Got King and Surman this week on WC to catch rises but think they will become Fellaini and RLC by next gw. RLC has done nothing points wise but think hes been very unlucky, hitting the woodwork and Benteke missing sitters from his assists

      I've had Hemed since GW6.

I know he's suspended at the moment but I may not have played him for Everton (h) or West Ham (a) anyway. (I probably would for Everton).

I got him for 4.9 and he's now 5.0. I know that having him means you can't have three big hitting strikers but I prefer to spread my points potential across my team. Having him has enabled me to have three big hitters in midfield (Currently Alli, Mkhi, and Salah - although I'm looking to change Mkhi to David Silva and Alli to Hazard) and one in defence (currently Kolasinac - considering Luiz or Otamendi).

He's been involved in 60% of Brighton's goals (2 goals 1 assist) and from GW 10 - GW 22 Brighton only have 4 fixtures with an FDR of more than 2.(Brighton will probably look for another striker in January)

Newcastle, Swansea, Burnley, and Huddersfield have favourable fixtures when Brighton have those 4 fixtures so can swap a 4.5 /4.6 defender around for those weeks and play 4-4-2 with Hemed on the bench.

Joselu is a great enabler for me!
Allows me to have big hitters at the back & midfield & switch between formations depending on players fixtures. This season i've played 343, 442, 433.
Recently people been obsessed with having 3 premium strikers up front but i've had just 2 since start of season (jesus/lukaku then kane & lukaku) & because i've had money invested in defence with spurs/city/utd so far its working out!
Rank 40k which is the highest ive ever been at this stage of season

Been watching Diouf - getting in good positions, good fixtures coming. Potentially looking at Lukaku out, having a front line of Kane and Jesus//Morata (potentially swapping around) and going big in midfield with a Hazard/Sanchez/KDB to complement Eriksen and Silva. I'm still at 1.1 million so need to look at getting points from other sources...

I've had Atsu and Joselu for the past couple of games, and have gotten two goals out if them. Not exactly 4.5m players but great options for the 6th and 7th offensive positions.
I'm currently on a wildcard, and looking to get rid of one of them, however they offer such great value imo so I might keep since Newcastle still have a couple of great fixtures coming up.

I've taken a punt on Fellaini on my WC (never thought I'd say that). He seems to be an integral player with Pogba out and with some tight games coming up be could bag points rather than the big names.

On a WC, sorted out my 'enablers' - names not yet mentioned....

Firstly in defence - not really enablers as they'll play most weeks - a double of Ward and t'other Burnley wingback, Lowton.

In midfield, not the cheapest, but in addition to Fellaini .... Iwobi. I suspect Ozil's lost his mojo and Wenger faith in him, leaving Iwobi pretty much nailed.

(and whisper it softly, but back to Burnley - I've actually tripled up with Pope) Five names at bargain prices.

Triple Burnley would certainly be bold, good luck with that. I've gone with Naughton, Ward & Fab, however it could easily have been Pope, Fernandez, Mee etc. I think a balance between SWA, BUR & NEW could be the best way forward. That away game at City could be brutal for you.

Hemed for me, even with his suspension, when he's back he's playable in easy home games and benchable when not without much fuss.

Too many enablers are dead weight, he's not, as you know, Brighton are not scoring many goals but at home, he's involved in most of them.

He allows a very sick 532 or 442 and allows you to play 3 upfront when the time is right, missed an 11 pointer as he was on my bench but caught a 9 pointer, they have a nice enough run of fixtures coming up too.

Quite tempted by Fellaini tbh. I think in the big games coming up he could well play into Joses pragmatic style and bag a headed goal or two. Dya reckon Ritchie to Fellaini is a bad move? Would allow me to go Eriksen to Hazard. On a WC already so no hits required.

I've got Fellaini in my WC team, along with two 4.5s (Tarroll, Stephens). Though a lot could change between now and the deadline...

People will say lots of things but I just don't feel there's any real consistency to be found (yet) in the sub-6.0 MID bracket no matter what underlying stats might indicate.

I'm quite comfortable fielding Fellaini as my 3rd MID in a 4-3-3 for at least the next couple of weeks (liv, hud) and go from there.

I think City defence offers more value.
Otamendi is cheaper than Luiz and has a better goal threat than him.

I like Azpi but with Morata.

The problem is that he is not 100% nailed - if you have him when he hauls then great, but owning him when he is benched is no fun ... if you can get the timing right he is good value.

    Bottomed on last article

Have such an itchy 'Int break WC' trigger finger but have no pressing injuries to justify playing it.

Do people tend to use their WC's when you have multiple injuries or when there is a big fixture swing?

I'm off to good start (OR 42k) and my team isn't too bad to be fair (one or two teaks in MD aside)

    Elliot Foster
    Mee Bailly Cedric Davies Mbemba
    Alli Ramsey Ritchie Carroll Matic
    Lukaku Kane Jesus

    Thoughts?

both sound moves, or even Bailly to Maguire and upgrade Matic to Richarlison possibly, gives you a reasonable 4 in the middle giving a bit of flexibility between 433 and 343 depending on fixtures

I've got Alli and hoping he comes good, but thinking i might have to cash in due to a problem like Morata, and being kane-less

I would use it, personally. Think the whole midfield could do with an overhaul - Alli/Ramsey could become Silva/Sterling, for instance - and IMO there's better value available in defence than Bailly during Utd's upcoming run of fixtures.

Pretty annoyed I didn't take the plunge on my WC straight away. Missed Jesus's price rise ðŸ™

    2. If that's all you have in life to be annoyed about you're doing well 🙂

Hopefully they return tasty points as well instead of 2 pointers 😳

Is mbemba likely to play? He was dropped for last game wasn't he?

Is mariappa the next best 4 m defender?

Yes Mariappa is next best, and yes mbemba was dropped, the fact he was completely dropped and not benched indicating it was tactical is worrying for those relying on him as anything other than a 5th def

I'm of the opinion that this defence with the cheaper 2 swapped when fixtures Change, in a 343 is strong enough going forward, don't think preme defenders with no attacking threat are good value

Davies Jones Ward Clark (Fuchs for gw9) Rosenoir

Does anyone disagree? If so why

Seeing Cedric in a lot of RMWCT

Southampton do have good fixtures but as an owner of Bertrand I don't have a lot of confidence in clean sheets despite the fixtures.

    Anyone else feeling this?

Yeah I'm staying away, they generally leak a goal and then their attacking of late has been poor. So where do the points come from for their defenders other than appearance points in my eyes.

Not an owner but yes, have conceded in easy fixtures already, no more likely and perhaps less likely than some 4.5s for clean sheets

Thoughts on Monreal on a WC? Got him at 5.4 and has served me so well last 2.

4 straight CSs. Upcoming games not too difficult either. I would hold him.

I was also thinking of keeping him. Has been a great buy for me. But I just think there are better options who are slightly more expensive (Bavies, Otamendi) or slightly cheaper (Maguire, Cedric) who may well match or outscore him.
Also fixtures get worse in 3 gameweeks.

    A . Mbemba - Luiz - Hazard

    B. Fernandez - Alonso - Coutinho

    A or B?
A would leave me with no Liverpool players
