It’s been quite a start to the season for Ben Davies. Currently leading all defenders in terms of points with 49 – a number which trails only Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku at any position – the Welshman’s form is inarguable.

In the six matches in which he has featured (Davies was rested for Spurs’ home encounter with Swansea in Gameweek 5), he has returned an average of 8.2 points per match (ppm) – more than a point clear of his closest rival (Antonio Valencia’s 6.7).

Last season, Davies performed admirably while deputising for the injured Danny Rose – racking up a goal and three assists, in addition to his share of Spurs’ league-leading clean sheet total. However, his attacking returns this campaign (two goals, three assists) have already exceeded last season’s totals in just 30% of the minutes.

In order to better interpret this attacking leap, we’ll be breaking down Davies’ early-season heroics, and looking for players who might serve as good benchmarks for projecting the Welshman’s performance over the remainder of the campaign.

Will there be a public apology from FFS for releasing bug-riddled 'expected goals' data on Friday night in the captain sensible article?

A lot of people decided to captain Lukaku over Kane off the back of xG data that clearly wasn't ready for public consumption.

Yeah they issued one somewhere in last 5 articles. You just need to go through them to find it.

Because the xG data was compelling. Kane would regress. Lukaku would not.

Maybe it should be a lesson for next time to not be so dependant on numbers but instead, use them to support your own thinking, assuming you're capable of that and you're not relying on the scouts to do your thinking for you.

I just captained Kane ... it was away to Huddersfield, a promoted team, at a time when he was of fire and loving away matches - and he loves scoring against promoted teams

It just never occurred to me to check whether someone else thought he might or might not score

good strikers tend to score over their xG because they are good strikers. xG is pretty compelling in telling you Kane is a good goalscorer

What is the matter with you?

This was originally a niche site that kind of went mainstream. Membership only costs £1 per month and because a lot of what used to be unique to this site is now more widely available, Mark is working hard to provide some new angles. You can't see that? You can't respect that?

He deserves to be commended for his efforts rather than having idiots complaining that they don't like the shape of the spoon they are being fed with. "Here's the captain... open wide... and swallow!".

        Bah, humbug.

xG data is inaccurate because every system calculates it differently. Seriously, look up a few and you will see that there are big differences in the numbers they produce. If you aren't checking two or three (or don't realise that it's not a clear cut stat) then you aren't doing sufficient research. Or you are expecting FFS to do all that for you. Which brings us back to the spoon I'm afraid.

The data used in the article was Opta's official xG data distributed to countless media sources.

Why do you state it wasn't "ready for public consumption"?

Can I have an apology for that false accusation because we'd never present the data if that was the case. The data wasn't broken or false in any way whatsoever.

It was fact that the Huddersfield defence looked far stronger statistically than Palace's and in fact, United had six big chances to Spurs' two. Lukaku had two to Kane's one.

Statistics can't legislate for Lukaku rolling the ball past the post with just the keeper to beat or Kane striking one in from 25 yards after beating two defenders. Both of which occurred.

Indeed. I though United would probably score 4+ and they did. Lukaku only getting one goal and no assists out of 4 scored is lower than his usual goal involvement. That can happen in any single game.

Huddersfield are still one of the better defences by most measures. They had a bad day. That can happen in any single game as well.

I'm happy to have captained Lukaku because it was a considered decision. I don't have 20/20 hindsight when selecting captains and nor does anyone else. And xG won't give it to you, either. 😉

Disagree on Huddersfield's defence. Over-acheived with the straight clean-sheets at the start of the campaign

Many tactical reasons to explain this, eg high-line, attacking full-backs often leaving two at the back etc

Yeah, I know all that. But their numbers for things like chances conceded and xGA are still among the top half of all defences, even after the mauling by Spurs. That was my only point. I'm not trying to recommend them to anyone.

Sounds like seriously sour grapes bud. All stats pointed to Kaku. It didn't work, some took a different approach and sometimes it pays off and more than often it doesn't. To blame the site for what you perceive to be false stats is a bunch of BS. Take it on the chin and move on.

I was under the impression that the xG data had been hosted on a server with bugs and I was under the impression that the xG data had been added to the captain sensible article before being properly sanity-tested by FFS.

This clearly wasn't the case. And so I apologise wholeheartedly and sincerely.

I thought a mistake had slipped through the net and, I admit it, I was irked. I would never question the integrity, diligence or professionalism of those people who run the website and who, quite frankly, make it the best FPL resource on the web. Never understood deadlifts

Lift a weight 2 inches from the ground the put it back down again. Seems daft.

Its like what happens when a weight lifter realises they cant lift the weight.

I'm convinced that's what happened and some big ego guy claimed he only intended to lift it shin high

No. But the mere mention that injury or rest could be a real risk for early adopters given the potential of 2x90min internationals to come, seemed a crazy suggestion to some.

Just amusing to see some breathing a sigh of relief after the first 90mins is completed. 🙂

An ideal week coming up will be.

              Firmino starts instead of Jesus
              Aguero drops again before deadline
              Jesus rises again before deadline
              .4 swing avoided

Successful calculated risk & International Break.

I can understand people keeping Davies. But on wildcard? Did Danny Rose retire or something? It's so obviously a transfer waiting to happen and Spurs' upcoming fixtures aren't that special anyway.

I wouldn't be having any Spurs defender on wildcard, least of all Davies. Seems to me to be a fundamental misunderstanding of what a wildcard is for. 😕

              Pochettino rotates fullbacks.

Rotation is the inconvenient truth that dare not be named on FFS. Until it bites people in the ass, at which time they will claim to have been "trolled".

I thought the same which is why I never got Walker at 5.5 last season. But to be fair, up until towards the end of last season, his first choice full backs were pretty nailed.

Yes, they are targeting the RM game for Rose. Davies will be OK for a few weeks no doubt. But on wildcard I'd be looking further than a few weeks.

Heat maps and the new xG stuff are golden.

But there's no replacement for actually watching and understanding football is there?

That's why I am shite at FPL, because even though I've been watching football for 25 years I've got no idea what's happening.

I’m not so sure. I mean you get access to a lot of stats but it’s never easy making sense of those numbers. Often stats can lie too. Stats may tell you Joselu is a better pick than Morata.

For me the biggest help has been reading the comment section on here.

Might start using the members area a bit more when xG/xA are added.

I know it´s early on and this one would surely bite me in the but:
i do not own Lukaku atm, and i find myself thinking that i´m not so afraid of not owning him while he plays for United as i were last year when he played for Everton, that´s a strange feeling... Even against Palace i wasn´t that concerned, i knew that he would most likely score or maybe even two, and it would have hurt, mind you, but for me the way United play and the price you pay for him without pens i feel more confident going with Jesus for now, and in that bracket i could easily swap between him and Morata or Aguero, which could be just a 0.5-1.0m between them in a weeks time going by this rate.

my english is not as good as it should be and i can see why my phrasing "playing style" and the fact 21 goals scored in seven matches does sound a bit weird, but what i was thinking of were not in the measure of stats entirely, but more down to Lukaku in Everton (whenever they scored he was in it, it felt like, and they had some outworldly matches, like that Bournemouth game) vs the way Lukaku operates in the United set-up. As i recall Lukaku had 50% or so involvement in Evertons goal last year and now has, i don´t know 30% in Uniteds? But stats aside, it was a sentiment, nor could one predict the future and playing FPL is down to so many possible routes in order to make one´s team and i could very well see myself revrting my ideas come nowember-)

I agree in some ways but it is risky not having him when he is 65% owned. Also he is in penalties isn't he? I know he missed one but I can't see who's gonna take them off him. I think for games when Jose parks the bus (top 6 teams) it's fine to go without but everyone else, at home especially it's get behind the sofa time.

admittedly Jesus hasn´t been, as you say, but he tend to score whenever he plays and my thinking was more in the scheme of 4-8gws, and Morata could maybe turn out to be the better option long term

          ofc it´s risky

he might be on pens still, but Mata is afar superior pen taker as is Pogba and Martial has taken two and missed none. Rashford is also an excellent pen taker. Mourinho tends to favor his strikers to take them but i think he sees the same as everyone else that Lukaku is surprisingly not particularly good en taker, not in the same mould as Vardy, but not far ahead.. When martial took his first, Mou mentioned that Mata was the one for that game, that´swhat we know for now at least

Just Noticed Silva's superority in baps over Sterling

Peopple say they tend to prefer goals but i think in this case Silva is the better option right ?

      - Sterling has 5 Goals but Only 1 Bonus point

      - Silva has 6 assists and 8 Bonus points

Silva will always do better with bps as he can dribble past opponents and creates so many chances but he has no goal threat.

Both are good options the 0.5 saved on Sterling does come very handy.

i wouldnt go on to say he has no goal threat

last 3 seasons in epl- (before this season)

          Sterling- 20 goals
          Silva- 17 goals

im not saying undermining sterling. he's a great option right now.

but if i had to pick one between them it would be Silva as he;ll get more baps and more secured minutes

If I had that much money I would go for Sane. Not saying Silva is a bad option but he actually has no goal threat “this season” according to stats and is also not a differential anymore.

I’m personally going with Sterling as I don’t have the money for Sane/Silva.

From what i´ve seen so far he will naturally be assisting a lot of goals but it also will come goals as he tend to pop up inside the box, usually not in the strikers position but in the aftermath of them or he lurks behind the backside of the defenders, tapping in balls, saw it on at least one occasion vs Chelsea and several times in the past. Not much in it but i think something between 4 and 8 goals is what one could expect and if he continues the assisting at this rate he will become the new Fab or Eriksen from last year... at 8.5 even he is value, Sterling is also value atm ofc, 0.5 could be nice to spend elsewhere, granted

Understandable. Player like Sterling makes mistake- wasting scoring chances, wrong passes, fouls... Result in minus pts

I think Jonty has given the best answer to this question, he said Get Silva. If Sane or Sterling start to then do better, it's an easy downgrade. It's trickier to go Sterling to Silva for example

That being said, could be a great punt to get in early, especially if you're chasing at all.

Morata looking more and more likely to play
      source: http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/862725/Chelsea-News-Alvaro-Morata-Injury-Update-Instagram

Looking to punish those who dropped him, if deemed 100% fit I'd even captain him.. though probably won't risk and go with a safe (K)ane

          Aren't you dramatic.
Considering he walked off vs City the injury was obviously not that bad. Morata will be in the contention for the golden boot, and he definitely wants to play.

Conte is not a mental guy and won't risk him before Roma, they've already rushed him to play vs City and didn't end up well

Morata was very sensible when he basically subbed himself off to avoid aggravation, so if he thinks he can play Palace, don't you think it's pretty safe for him to play Palace?

            • 9 Years

The question is why he would need him to play vs CP?

Secure a quick win, then sub off at 60' or something?
And he showed he doesn't value Bats by subbing Willian in, so basically he thinks that Morata has no viable alternative in the squad
Besides it's good to keep your players happy.

And if he's absolutely recovered, there is no question on whether he plays him.

only bought him last week, just in time for his injury, so i wish he was fit, but feel he will miss a couple of games - reckon CFC are a she in to beat Palace with or without him so i think they will err on the side of caution

Yeah but considering he is a pro player he should know how quickly he can recover and whether he'll be able to play or not. Besides:
          1) He walked off vs City
          2) The grade 2 seems a mistranslation according to some medical expert on twitter, he noted that it may take only 5 days to heal
          3) In 1) he showed he was sensible so if he thinks he can play it's probably without mayor risk

Morata badly wants to play in the World Cup which is why he left RM, perhaps he wanted to play for Spain more than Chelsea and came off early.

That doesn't make much sense. His chances as a RM player would be greater than at Chelsea, for if Real doesn't have connections with the national squad then who does?
Also he was very highly valued at RM, he only left RM because he wasn't a starter.

I am somewhat biased, as I think Morata is class and I want him to play.
But as I mentioned in the comments, there are factors suggesting he will play CPA:
        1) Conte showed no value in Bats, so he probably thinks Morata has no real alternative
        2) Morata was sensible with asking to be subbed, so if he thinks he can play CPA Conte will most likely believe him it's safe
        3) There was information that his injury wasn't as bad as reported due to poor translation of sports terms, with talk of a 5-8 day recovery
        4) He has shown over social media that he thinks he'll be able to play (adds to 2) ) and is motivated to recover quickly
        5) Conte can always start him and substitute him early if needed

because of how his teams play. High tempo, one touch/ two touch, England are so slow and every player feels the need to take unnecessary touches. Pep would sort this out

they weren't that bad, just had some defensive issues to sort out, which aren't there anymore now. Just because Pep didn't win any trophies last year doesn't make it a bad manager all of a sudden.

Counterintuitively wingbacks don't need to be as quick as fullbacks sometimes, meaning players like Alonso and Davies can thrive. The key is both play in teams with a solid shield in front of the defence - whereas because City just have Fernandinho, they need wingbacks who can get up and down much more and basically play two positions at full throttle.

Are you a rich foreigner? Fulham don't have fans, just rich people who live near the ground

just because Fulham fans aren't loud and arrogant glory hunters doesn't mean we aren't hard core fans

to be honest, I don't care anymore about International football right now; that England team has lost all passion and heart, and they need to have a real kick up the backside instead of just carrying on to grind 1-0, 2-0s in the qualifiers and then get knocked out in the round of 16 at every major tournament

Me too. I'm disgruntled that England got seeded higher than Italy. Disgusting from Fifa

Oxlade-Chamberlain starts at right-midfield tonight, meaning we should probably expect him to force a move to a new country any day now.

English players don't dive, they're just clever. Only the bloody foreigners dive.

      Best midfielder under 7.5?

To make a midfield of: Eriksen / Silva / ______ / RLC (Carroll)

Looking at points per match Richardson at 5.7 is fantastic. Two terrible fixtures but he's looked great so far. Can play.

        Richalison or Ritchie.

Yeah this was my dilemma recently. Long and short: Ritchie works far too hard without reward – goals, assists, BPs – compared to Richarlison, making the latter sure to outscore him in fantasy terms. No brainer really...

Yep, Richarlison over Ritchie every day of the week.

Lanzini for potential or Richarlison after 2 games.

Not much at that 6.5-7.5 range that stands out.

Would go lower (Richarlison/Ritchie) and use the cash elsewhere.

The only thing thats turning me off Richardson is the next two fixtures. From there he looks amazing, might just bite the bullet. Arsenal home might have some goals in it.

I'd be very surprised if Watford don't score against Arsenal.

Richarlison and Gray will have too much pace for their back 3.

Stay away from Willian....had him for 7 GW's and he did nowt for that price tag.

I currently have Ritchie in that price bracket but he'll become Richarlison in GW10 once Wat get Ars and Che out the way next 2.

I hope you're not banking on RLC as your fourth mid yet. 4 tough games before fixture turn in GW 12 and playing Chelsea this week so cannot play against parent team

Davies, Otamendi, Cedric, Ward and Mbemba a decent defense on WC?

Yes, but keep an eye on Cedric, looks like he might go down in price. Might be able to save yourself 0.1m.
