The Scouts make a return. Our resident selection panel went into the international break with a chunky win over Gameweek 7’s Community Champion tucked into their belt of Fantasy knowledge.

They’re now looking to build momentum with another victory this week, zeroeing in on some tantalising match-ups, while mostly avoiding the Gameweek’s clash of the titans.

Key home fixtures for Manchester City and Spurs, together with Chelsea’s trip to the not-so glittering Crystal Palace, inform many of their decisions. Manchester United at Liverpool does not.

And budget enablers from Swansea City, Burnley and Brighton sit alongside some of the bigger Fantasy Premier League names to balance the books.

We’ll be back at the end of the week to see who makes the final cut. In the meantime, here are their initial thoughts.

Paul Says…

Spurs, Man City and Chelsea dominate my squad and supply three outfield players apiece.

Five goals in as many league outings highlight Raheem Sterling’s value for money at a cost of just 7.9. His pitch-time could be key at home to Stoke City – the England star has played 90 minutes in three of his last four, whereas Gabriel Jesus has yet to make it past the hour-mark in City’s home matches so far.

Chelsea’s trip to Palace brings Marcos Alonso back into contention. Given that the Eagles have conceded almost twice the number of chances down their right flank (34 to 18), the Spaniard and, potentially, Eden Hazard – should Antonio Conte return to 3-4-3 – could profit at Selhurst Park.

Leicester’s Harry Maguire offers the prospect of points at both ends of the pitch at home to a West Brom side that’s scored just once on their travels.

He’s already racked up a goal and two assists and has  21 points from three appearances at the King Power.

Jonty Says…

I’ve swerved assets from both Manchester United and Liverpool ahead of their hard-to-call Anfield encounter on Saturday lunchtime.

With no place for pricey Scout Picks’ stalwart Romelu Lukaku in my selection, this gives me a chance to put forward a raft of premium midfielders for consideration.

Eden Hazard’s brace for his country this week acted as a powerful reminder of the Belgian maestro’s potent threat. With Alvaro Morata sidelined, he could even be deployed in a central attacking role against a woeful Palace.

Should my colleagues shun another of my picks, Gabriel Jesus, I’d be keen to see a Manchester City midfield double-up involving chief creator David Silva and Raheem Sterling, who is second only to the injured Sergio Aguero in terms of goals and shots among Pep Guardiola’s charges.

In defence, I’m advocating spending big, with a Chelsea pick looking a must against the goalless Eagles. My top choice is Cesar Azpiliceuta, who has assists and bonus in his locker. I’d also be happy enough to see the slightly cheaper David Luiz handed a place.

But I’m not getting too carried away with our new-found wealth, ensuring that I’ve also put forward some bargains to ease the pressure on our 83 million budget.

In attack, Jamie Vardy looks good value for his 8.6 price tag, with five goals already and a clash with a West Brom side that may struggle to contain his attacking threat – particularly in the air.

His team-mate, Harry Maguire (5.1), is another with excellent potential given that he has already prospered over a nightmare run that has included match-ups with Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Burnley are also a supplier of budget enablers ahead of West Ham’s visit, with defender Stephen Ward (4.6) racking up 30 points over his last four starts. Chris Wood’s 6.6 price tag may also come in handy should we decide to invest heavily in midfield and defence.

Finally, Mark’s talk of the 5.0-priced Solly March as a budget enabler on this week’s Scoutcast is something I also endorse heartily as a Brighton fan.

Peter Says…

We will all be scouring international match reports and transcripts of domestic press conferences judiciously before Saturday’s deadline.

The break served up the usual cloak and dagger shenanigans regarding “international†injuries and bona fide ones, as well as forcing devoted FPL managers to utilise Google Maps to ascertain levels of fatigue.

With that extensive caveat in place, there are undoubtedly some stand-out match-ups this week at the beginning of a fixture swing which has already seen over 111,000 Wildcards activated.

Just how many assets to choose from Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs will be the main issue. My selections from these premium teams aren’t always the most expensive options, simply because we will need to apply some sort of financial prudence.

Admittedly, Gabriel Jesus may find his minutes are managed, but he is surely worth the gamble.

To balance the books, Leicester, Southampton and Swansea all offer options, particularly defensively.

Jamie Vardy has kept pace with all of his more pricey peers and comes in, although West Brom’s typically defensive approach – only six shots on target in three away games – perhaps suggests a double-up on Kasper Schmeichel and Harry Maguire could be just as lucrative.

On a similar note, while Southampton can’t seem to buy a goal, visitors Newcastle have only hit the net once on their travels and I still have faith that Cedric Soares’s attacking threat will at some point be rewarded.

Despite their recent run of clean sheets, injury doubts surround Arsenal’s backline, so Richarlison has already found his way into nearly 100,000 new teams this week and seems worth the gamble at that bargain 6.1 price.

Mark Says…

Compiling my selection, I think it’s already obvious that Friday’s picks will be set up with a four-man defence. In fact, there’s even an argument to go with five given the returns we’ve seen from defenders so far.

Gameweek 8 provides us with many compelling backline candidates with my top trio of Ben Davies, Marcos Alonso and Nicolas Otamendi looking assured targets, promising clean sheet returns at the very least.

In contrast, the choice in midfield remains surprisingly limited.

I’ve opted for Eden Hazard in my top three but, in truth, he’s barely done enough to warrant Scout Picks inclusion. If he gets the nod, it will have more to do with his opponents Crystal Palace than his own form and fitness.

I’m sticking with Dele Alli. His recent output is a little worrying, but then so is Christian Eriksen’s propensity to give up set-pieces to Davies, and the fact that he is surely destined to be limited to another 70-minute appearance with a tie with Real Madrid looming.

Elsewhere in midfield, the fact that Aaron Ramsey is again among my nominations demonstrates that we’re struggling for convincing mid-price options.

Up front, the candidates are stronger, and I’m still advocating a powerful tri-force set-up, with Romelu Lukaku remaining in the mix.

His impressive strike for Belgium on Tuesday highlighted his confidence levels, and I think Manchester United will continue to find a way of keeping him fed at Anfield, even if Jose Mourinho deploys a more cautious gameplan.

The Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek will be Mince n Tatties, who is in his seventh campaign, with 2015/16’s finish of 9,785 his best to date.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Gameweek 7’s champion Ringwraith was beaten 48-74 by the Scouts.

The champion to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

I sort of agree - not on the triple attack bit (no way 😀 ), but one of them at least will provide good value at some point. Benteke will go on a scoring run, he's too good with his head especially not to.

Big sigh of relief here that Hazard and Sterling survived another day. However, still no double risers for me, so I'll likely have to cash in tomorrow and admit defeat.

Current "looking for risers" team is:

          Fabs Elliot
          Davies Monreal Stones Ward Mbemba
          Coutinho Ramsey Silva King Doucoure
          Jesus Kane Vardy

          Likely moving to:

          Fabs Elliot
          Luiz Cahill Stones Ward Martina
          Coutinho Hazard Silva Shaqiri RLC
          Kane Vardy Joselu

Might swap Coutinho for Sterling and more $ in defense.

Fair enough, a free 0.1 from Jesus if you keep another day.
Double Chelsea with no Kante is interesting after Palace.

Well, I might get the 0.1 from Jesus and then have to spend it to get Hazard if they both rise.

As far as Chelsea, only GWs 11 and 13 give me pause over the next 12 weeks. Even if Kante misses a couple of games, I like their CS chances.

I suppose the alternative is double City at the back.

Beat the KneeJerkers XI, results for GW7 and squad for GW8

GW7 continued with the theme of the season: “The curse of the most-tranferred-in player”. This time, it was Morata’s turn to ‘reward’ his new owners with a one pointer and a flag to boot. The rest of the team did not much better, with only DeGea, Otamendi and Coutinho providing any kind of return, for a total of 42 paltry points.

    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/4112369/event/7
    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/leagues/standings/907919/classic

Only three entries scored less, and so the Kneerjerkers’ league is now down to 67 competitors, from an original 327. For GW8, the following squad of most-transferred-in players is now final:

    Elliot (40)
    Davies (158), Ward (125), Monreal (89)
    David Silva (149), Doucouré (111), Coutinho (107), Fellaini (107)
    Kane (C, 330), Jesus (VC, 269), Vardy (144)
    Bench: Forster (32); Richarlison (104), Trippier (57), Otamendi (55)

The frontline for this GW looks scary good, with plenty of firepower and great fixtures, so I’d expect the Kneejerkers XI to put up a respectable score this time.

    Bottomed sorry ...

Really struggling with the Lukaku decision.

Hail Cheaters said it would be madness to sell a 60% owned player who is consistently scoring points.

Already sold him so no going back now..is it a gamble..yes! But look at his fixtures and the amount of money tied up. I had a Lukaku, Kane, Firmino front line from the start and I think it was detrimental to my team overall

I'm very worried about the 60% ownership, though. The majority of whom will captain him most weeks. One hatrick from Lukaku and your season suffers a massive body blow which will be very difficult to recover from.

But with Kane on form are you going to Captain him? Over the next 4 fixtures I don’t think I will give him the armband. Also takes away my decision as I have wrongly captained him over Kane too many times!

Then make your own decision and keep him? Haven't you already regretted some decision which you have based on what some other persons decide to do? I have ditched Lukaku on wildcard. Don't always dwell too much on Jonty says this and Mark says that. I think it's just basic FPL strategy to ditch him due fixtures. I plan to go for GW12 with two FT's to get him back.

I don't have a WC but even if I had I think it's a tricky time to do WC. When Morata and Kun come back (and play) that's the time to take a call. I plan to pick 2 out of the big 4 strikers. Right now I have Kaku and see no point in swapping around till I make that call.

The sensible plan imo (if on WC) is to keep both Kane and Kaku. Assuming Morata is out for two weeks.

I agree, I don't have Lukaku but if I did, I'd keep this week. I have Kane/Jesus in a 4-4-2 currently. Will likely keep Kane long term while the other forward will be Lukaku GW12. I am not on the Vardy train and don't like what 3 big hitters up top does to the rest of the team make up.

Maybe later in the year when (or really if this year) my TV improves I'll reconsider.

Wrong captaincy choice is the most detrimental thing to me most of the time. Having both Kane and Kaku gives me a headache so I went for just Kane. Utd have some tougher fixtures coming so lots of 1-0 scores coming.

It’s scary going without him but I’ve sold him on wildcard for these 4 fixtures knowing that he can kill my rank in GW9.
Just think the extra funds help and players with better fixtures might outscore him during this run though I’m fully prepared to get him back in GW12 no matter what.

The high owneship should make his price difficult to rise and easier to drop. Never had him due to his high ownership. Plus he needs more than a goal to get bonus points so he is basically a standard 6-pointer. Not captain material for those points and more fun and flexibility to not have 3 heavy-hitters upfront and have to use 4.5 defenders or midfielders every week. If you want a stable squad with minimum risk though, he will provide the points you need, no more no less. Would sell him for free if there is a player you believe will get a goal this week.

Oo-oo I've considered adding Hazard alongside Sanchez but I can't justify selling Alli before Bournemouth.

In the cold light of day, I think Sanchez is always a threat but even so, he's not worth 12m now that he's given up pens to Lacazette. You can do an awful lot by downgrading him to a Man City midfielder.

That's the beauty of Sanchez. He can be downgraded to anyone else.

It's heart over head for me when it comes to Sanchez. I'm visualising a West Ham away haul and the ensuing panic.

I like the diff factor with Sanchez and Hazard but you are relying heavily on them to deliver for your team.

I am not too sure they will live up to their hefty price tags but if it does not work out they can be easily downgraded.

We all love Alexis but he needs to do a lot more to justify his price.. I understand that you try to be ahead of the curve but there is value elsewhere.. A good fpl manager needs to do sensible moves.

Was this meant for me? I don't mind replying either way 🙂

You're absolutely right about Sanchez (this season, at any rate). I brought him in before the Arsenal - Liverpool game expecting goals - something like a 2-2. Arsenal then had Bournemouth at home, closely followed by West Brom and Brighton. It was a calculated risk. The Liverpool game had 4 goals, but all for Liverpool, and Sanchez has only picked up 2 assists in the subsequent games.

At that point, no-one knew if he was still on pens. Turns out Lacazette is, otherwise it would have been a goal + assist and max bonus vs West Brom.

I'm now selling him, but maybe not learning the lesson as his replacement will be Hazard. This move has a better chance of succeeding as there's a few things in his favour; playing Palace (albeit away), is on pens, and is 1.4m cheaper.

It was intended for FPL Virgin but i was glad reading your view on this matter... Anyway i think that this year there are so many different options and we are so far away from a template that literally any choice can prove correct. Unfortunately with so many choices around, a lot will come down to luck. It is highly probable that next week everybody is going to be trying to get Sanchez and Hazard.. I am on a WC myself and i have never felt more indecisive on which players to choose.

No pens this season and won't play false 9, that was the position he got the majority of his hauls in

This is a lazy misconception. He scored very heavily from the left last season. There weren't that many pens last season and he is looking good in a number 10 role at the moment.

Fair enough, just checked it up, only 2 pens last season, ignore that then. Still think he's too expensive to have atm, has to be really firing to be justifiable imho

I agree, the position argument is nonsense, he is a winger after all. Frankly though, he overperformed last season, and is off pens. Not good enough for 11.9 that severely upsets team balance.

Im just gonna throw it out there.. I think Jesus will play 80+ minutes against Stoke, Napoli and Burnley and then get a rest when Aguero is fully fit at some point.

He is young, healthy and in a superb good shape. Besides he has been rested more than enough while Kun was fit. All in all i think he is capable of playing that many minutes even with a super tight schedule.

There was also no reason for Brazil not to rest him during the IB if that was not the case: They had already qualified and they obviously know how much Guardiola depends on him, now that Aguero isn‘t available. So if they thought he could not handle it or that it would fatigue him, surely they would have given him a rest in of those games.

If other players can handle it, so can Jesus. He can get a rest when Kun is available again.

Its time to shine in the abscens of Aguero young Jesus!!!

He's starting for sure, but I can see another 50-60 minute game if they're 3 goals up by that point. 80 minutes does sound plausible though if the game isn't wrapped up.

For me, it's either a simple Morata to Jesus or Morata to cheap striker and RLC to Hazard. Not sure how I'm going to make up my mind because I've been pondering that for days and it's not like Pep will tell us in advance how many minutes Jesus will get! Though if he says Aguero is back soon that might do it.

City mids are also a risk.. by far the most risky positions as they have direct swap options in all positions. They dont have another »pure« striker with Aguero out.

It was just a question. And, yes, it might make you more hopeful of that outcome than the (very possible) one in which he gets rested with the CL match midweek and plenty of capable attackers (Sane and Sterling and B. Silva) able to beat Stoke.

Makes me more hopeful, but it doesnt change my argument... Why would brazil play him for 180 mins well knowingly he is citehs only striker atm, when they were already qualified? Wouldnt make sense if they knew Jesus couldnt handle it

So you think Pep WANTED him risked for 180 minutes? That he and Brazil decided on his playing time together?

It's Pep and there's certainly enough factors to bring Jesus into the red/bench zone and although he may play and come off early, I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see him benched

Yeah I wouldn't avoid them, I'm just unwilling to get any of their players into my two premium forward positions as I wouldn't readily trust anyone in a Pep side with my armband

Holding is tempting, but not sure about the fixtures (wat, eve, SWA, mcy) - only see 1 clean sheet there.

Foster -> Pope/Ryan is an option I've looked at - think I prefer BUR's defence.

    Kun on Saturday:

"I still do not know if I am going to play on Saturday. Today I trained normally, but without the group.

"Tomorrow I will get into the group to see how I feel, but at training it's not the same thing as a game, I want to see if I have pain."

Interesting presser tomorrow! (Excited Kun owner)

I'll say it again - I think the 'Jesus situation' is getting overplayed on here big time. You should be delighted that he's playing full games for Brazil and bagging a brace against Chile!
He is young and has enough time to recover. His minutes have been manged by Pep already this season so ther's no fatigue issue. He will start and be hauled off around the 70th min mark imo.
In saying that, I'm not captaining him but punting on Vardy instead which I hope doesnt come back to bit me in the ass 😉

In GW6 he was rested, Aguero played. As I said, his minutes have been managed already by Pep. He doesnt have Kun available this week. I might be wrong of course but I think there's a slim chance that he starts Sterling/KDB as a false nine. But who knows with Pep he 😉

I think Vardy is a nice punt for captain after a couple weeks of rest. Jesus should start, but you really never know. The week after an international break is a lottery.

A screwdriver walks into a bar. The bartender smiles and says 'do you know that we have a drink named after you?' The screwdriver gasps in astonishment 'really, you've got a drink called Dave!'.

Good news. I wasn't overly worried as I would've had Lascelles off the bench anyway if Kolasinac was unfit.

I dont know about Aguero but i have cracked a rib or two in my time and i did not even miss a days work over it.

Very painful yes especially when you sneeze but some pain killers and after a week you are pretty much over it imo.

A bit different comparing your average job to the physicality of the PL.

Say for instance he started vs Stoke, the Stoke players would be all elbows I'm sure.

They won't risk him for a few weeks, imho

My job is pretty physical tbh.

Granted i would be moving tentatively for a few days after a injury like that but i would be certainly be getting stuck back in after a week.

I am a carpenter and yes it can be pretty physically demanding depending on the job you are doing on the day.

Aguero only has to go for 90min it is not as if he will be on the go for the whole day.

He played in Brazil last night (aka early hours of this morning when you take into account time difference)

If he’s flying back commercially, he won’t be able to fly out until this morning, landing late today or possibly tomorrow if he does an overnighter. Not much recovery time.

Not saying he will get rested. Just the reason he might be.

He needed a second bite at the cherry to score two of his goals and doesn't get many bonus points. For a sub 10m Everton striker I'll accept that but not a flagship 11.8 United striker
