Sunday did its best to provide incident and excitement, although it was always going to be difficult to follow on from yesterday’s spoils. An unexpected Manolo Gabbiadini brace stole the show, while assists for budget midfielders provided the rest of the Fantasy fare, as defences buckled in both matches.

Gross the provider once again

Brighton has now scored six goals this season, with Pascal Gross involved in five of them.

The German claimed his third assist of the season with his interception that lead to Anthony Knockaert‘s sweetly struck opener.

Gross took an ownership 14.1% into Gameweek 8, having been signed by over 109,000 new managers, although another 68,000 saw fit to move him out. They may be regretting that decision this evening after another steady six-point return from the budget midfielder.

It was Knockaert who went into the campaign considered our most likely attacking option in the Seagulls ranks. But the Frenchman has been on the periphery until today. He fired a first goal of the season on his recall to Chris Hughton’s starting XI following his benching at Arsenal.

Both midfielders can build on Sunday’s points over a continued run of favourable fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. Hughton’s men face visits to West Ham and Swansea, while Southampton and Stoke are the next visitors to the Amex Stadium.

However, that run is more likely to promote interest in the Brighton defence and, intriguingly, we may have a new budget option available to us.

Shane Duffy was forced off with what looked like a thigh problem to be replaced by Uwe Huenemeier, who, at 3.9, may now be called into action. The German is already owned by 6.2% of managers as a bench warming budget option but could now enter more squads should Duffy face a spell on the sidelines.

Gabbiadini delivers as Forster falters

Manolo Gabbiadini scored his first goals since Gameweek 2 with a brace against Newcastle United to provide a rare double-digit return.

The Italian first pegged back the visitors with a fine solo effort before converting a spot-kick after Shane Long was felled.

Dusan Tadic was on the pitch at the time of the award, indicating that Gabbiadini has now assumed penalty duties. Tadic had previously taken and scored a spot-kick ahead of the striker against West Ham in Gameweek 2.

Gabbiadini was recalled to the Saints starting line-up today having been reduced to cameo roles since his last start in Gameweek 4. He had suffered a loss of 190,000 owners over that spell and went into today’s game as part of just 95,000 squads.

The 12-points appear unlikely to spark a renaissance, although Gabbiadini’s confidence levels will be boosted ahead of West Brom’s visit in Gameweek 9. Another return against the Baggies could see some begin to reconsider the striker, although his previous inconsistency, coupled with the availability of Swansea City’s Tammy Abraham, will likely temper interest.

Fraser Forster‘s uncertain display helped ensure that Southampton had to settle for a point.

The keeper was slow to react to Isaac Hayden’s first-half strike, while he also lets Ayoze Perez’s shot rebound back to the striker for the eventual winner.

Forster is part of 9.0% of squads and went into Gameweek 8 having produced nine points via a penalty save at Stoke City last time out. That haul had earned him 56,000 new owners before Saturday’s deadline, second only to Newcastle’s Rob Elliot who picked up 70,000 managers. Both keepers produced just a single point to reward their recent investors.

Elsewhere for Newcastle, Christian Atsu recovered from the knock that kept him from international duty and duly delivered an assist for his 4.2% ownership. The Ghanian’s initial drive was blocked before rebounding to Hayden to convert the Magpies’ opener.

Like Atsu, Matt Ritchie also figured having recovered from the injury that kept him out of Scotland’s squad over the break. However, his role on set-pieces remains reduced by Jonjo Shelvey’s presence. Ritchie took 13 of 15 corners with Shelvey out of favour but shared them four apiece today.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

A bit of a vague question here, I rarely take hits because from what I understand, the player you get in needs to outscore the player you get rid off by 4 points (an assist wont even do) which seems rather unlikely to me. However I have seen that this "taking hits" pays off. Can someone enlighten me what am I missing?

need to judge it over a 2/3 game period for me to see if it pays off.

as you say judging it on one game means unlikely to ever pay off.

The obvious one is when player is injured/ banned.

Perfect example this week of other scenario, didnt do Salah to Sterling for a -4.
      Would have paid off

      That's essentially it.

It's a risk, but sometimes makes sense. If for instance you have a player you know who's not going to play and you have no bench, a hit to remove him only actually puts you 2 points down (assuming 60 minutes played), but carries a much greater upside.

My hits this season; Zaha (0) to Mhki (10), Firmino (2) to Aguero (11). That has netted me 19 points and so I would consider those to have 'paid off'.

This I did (first hit of the season) Ramsey - Firmino (2points) to Hazard - DCL (got 7 points) -4 so +1 and I got Hazard with price 10.5. Hope he will score nicely in next 2 and that his value will raise.

Depends on the players involved really..for instance I took a hit of -8 this gw for

      Mkhi > Sterling
      Laca > Kane &
      Firmino > Vardy...

      Mkhi + Laca + Firmino +8 = 14..
Kane + Sterling = 17 with Vardy to go

Personally I have found that a -4 combined with 2FTs is more worthwhile as it helps with mini surgery of the team. Otherwise basic rule is always think twice before taking a hit.

I'm tempted by a more creative option but I think I might need to go for the obvious. Which transfer would you make?

    A. Kane to Aguero (if fit, etc),
    B. Mooy to Richarilson, or
    C. Kolasniac to Otamendi?

46 points on wildcard with Vardy to go feels disappointing after ditching Eriksen and going for Silva over Sterling. 🙁

I got Hazard in for him..looked the next few fixtures and was so tempted with Eden as a differential and also as one more potential captain option for GW9. Of course that could still turn around in the next fixtures but feeling little low as I seem to get those decisions wrong week after week this season.

    Elliot (Foster)
Monreal - Naughton - Yoshi (Dunk - Rangel)

Based on games so far Sane is behind sterling. Agreed there will be rotation but with one of the two strikers and one of silva/Sterling you should be able to do well.

Can easily be along the points vs Pool.

The last player I would sell is Bavies. 2 games only and he can easily get points with them too.

Liverpool is a good fixture for attacking returns for Davies at Wembley. I'll just bench him for Utd. His potential points per £ is unreal.

Not sure I'd bench him v United. 0-0 quite possible

Tricky one. A couple tough fixtures and then Rose is back. I'm keeping, but can see the logic in getting rid - trouble is who for?! Only Jones really appeals

Davies oaid the price for international duty which is now behind him. Sell if you wish. I like him and will hold

    Morning all!

Largely happy with the weekend, despite a poor/mediocre score. Captain Kane woeful once again, but never really considered looking elsewhere, so can't complain.

Any changed opinions now on which Liverpool mid is preferable out of Coutinho and Salah?

Was looking to get in Coutinho if my Hazard punt fails to deliver next week, but now thinking of going back to Salah with the pens

Only from watching the game, no stats, im in zero hurry to get any Lpool mids in.
If you have i would prob keep but not transfer in right now. Just my opinion

I'm keeping Salah for now. Probably a close call between the him and Cout at the moment, but when Mane comes back Cout could drop deeper.

I might be tempted to hold Hazard for one more GW and see what he delivers - looked good in the internationals

I'm keeping Salah, more pace and hope his shots on target improving.

happy with my current mod but want eriksen in a few gws
will figure out the money but who would you upgrade out of:

    A sterling
    B silva
    C coutinho

all seem like good assets but one might need to make way

Probably B. Wouldn't want to lose the other two but keep an eye on Liverpool

I usually like to diversify my mids but City are steamrolling teams at the moment so would say Coutinho. There is an element of rotation risk with City players though.

originally thought double city would be a couple of gw punt but it would seem foolish to hange currently. guess I'll just have to wait and see!

If RLC plays no 10 role he could be a very decent budget enabler right ?

From the palace matches ive watched he looked their main threat

Yes, but what many are missing is that he might well play #9 while Benteke is out. 🙂

I have been watching RLC for a long time, Doos. I have no doubt that you are right based on this season's stats. I suspect that you may see RLC turn those stats over though. 🙂

Aguero's return makes him a worse option than Morata for me

        Aguero back..

.. Will see how the minutes get distributed in the CL games this week and the weekend coming and go from there.

Jesus still done well when Aguero was fit before so I don't see that changing anytime soon.

ok, Choupo-Moting or Gross? And why so much love for Gross? Is it just because of freekicks?

who would you sell for Jones?

    A) Morgan (vs Swansea, i have Abraham)
    B) Clark (vs Palace, missed yesterday, I have Ritchie)
    C) Mee (vs City, but I can easily bench him)
