Eden Hazard scores twice and Alvaro Morata returns to action as Chelsea share the spoils with Roma at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Manchester United claim yet another clean sheet as Jose Mourinho remains optimistic on Phil Jones’ fitness for the weekend trip to Huddersfield Town.

Here’s the notes from last night’s Champions League action…

Hazard rescues Blues

Eden Hazard picked a fine time to return to form as Chelsea came from behind to secure a draw against Roma at Stamford Bridge.

Handed a role alongside the fit-again Alvaro Morata as Antonio Conte started with a 3-5-2 formation, the Belgian scored twice and created five chances for team-mates before being replaced by Willian with 10 minutes remaining.

Owned by just 4%, Hazard – who scored 12 times at home last season, more than any FPL midfielder – is now shaping up as a major differential ahead of a visit from a Watford side that’s conceded ten goals in the last four Gameweeks.

Morata failed to score but his Fantasy owners will at least be relieved to see him back in action – he lasted the full 90 and was unlucky not to net with four efforts on goal.

His deflected pass led to Hazard’s first goal, with substitute Pedro teeing up the Belgian for his second – and Chelsea’s third – late on.

With N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater already sidelined, Conte opted to play David Luiz in central midfield last night. The Brazilian fired the opener but was subbed off before the hour-mark due to injury as the Blues reverted to 3-4-3.

Post-match, Conte conceded that the champions’ problems in the centre of the park have escalated ahead of the Hornets’ encounter:

“After the first half the doctor told me David Luiz had a pain in his calf, and the same for Bakayoko in his groin”.

Yet those problems in midfield could force Hazard onto the left wing this weekend if Conte switches back to 3-4-3.

Gary Cahill played with a wrap around his head but his manager eased any concerns over the defender’s fitness by saying it was “nothing serious, a knock on the chin”.

Last night’s draw still leaves Chelsea in the driving seat in Group C – they are two points clear at the top, with a five-point gap ahead of third-placed Atletico Madrid.

Their next Champions League match – a return to Rome – arrives three days after a Gameweek 10 clash with Bournemouth and five days prior to a Gameweek 11 visit from Jose Mourinho’s Man United.

That could certainly raise some rotation concerns given Conte’s previous comments on workload.

Rashford decisive for United

Jose Mourinho’s side maintained their 100% start to Group A, thanks mainly to an error from Benfica’s young keeper Mile Svilar.

The 18-year-old carried a Marcus Rashford free-kick behind the line to earn the Red Devils a 1-0 win in Portugal and keep them three points clear at the summit.

Romelu Lukaku mirrored his weekend performance at Liverpool – 90 minutes, one shot, no goals – but a trip to Huddersfield ensures he remains one of the favourites in our Gameweek 9 Captain Poll.

As Mourinho himself made a point of mentioning, United now have nine clean sheets in 12 matches across all competitions.

And last night’s shutout came without his first-choice central defenders Phil Jones and Eric Bailly, as Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof marshaled the back-four instead.

Post-match, he issued an update on the former two and also conceded that Rashford will be monitored after being forced off on 76 minutes.

“Phil Jones was on the bench because he felt that if we really needed him, he could [play].

So if he was at that stage today, on Saturday I think he will be in a condition to play. For Eric Bailly, I think it will be difficult.

With Rashford, I thought it was cramp because he was running so much – I thought it was muscular fatigue. But no, he told me he felt something in his knee. It didn’t look to me like a big thing but we don’t know.

Hopefully some of them [can return at Huddersfield] but I don’t know. I don’t know about Paul, I don’t know about Fellaini.”

The comments on Jones will ease concerns a little after his manager had stated that the defender missed the match through injury, only to then be named as a sub.

The most transferred in (122,000+) defender in the Gameweek, Jones’ minutes continued to be managed – he has yet to play a midweek match, with Mourinho restricting his pitch time to league matches only.

But the news on Bailly seems less promising, with Smalling looking favourite to deputise for the Ivorian once again at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Further up the field, Anthony Martial and Rashford continue to alternate on the left flank, with the Frenchman favourite to return to the XI against the Terriers in light of last night’s teamsheet.

United’s next Champions League match – a home clash with the Portuguese side on October 31 – occurs three days after a Gameweek 10 visit from Spurs and five days before they travel to Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 11.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    The Chelsea Blues

A defeat by Crystal Palace then letting a lead against Roma slip does not bode well for Chelsea's prospects.

This is annoying as it comes at a time of strong fixtures.

Which Chelsea players are you looking to get in? Or if you already own some of their assets are their any you are considering ditching?

    Can their defence be trusted?

And which of Hazard or Morata is most likely to impress this weekend?

If any I think Morata is the safe option. Alonso could come good but some will start to lose patience with his lack of attacking returns, and limited clean sheet potential following Kantes injury.

Morata first on my watchlist (possibly in for Jesus as soon as next week)
For me, their defence cannot be trusted given that other defences are proving tighter and are cheaper (United)

Although I have Hazard and I feel both of them will haul. It also depends on the formation and if as u mentioned above Hazard is pushed to the wing then it is obvious that Morata will have higher chances of being involved. Despite all this I am captaining Hazard as I feel that he will earn, if not more, then almost identical points to Morata

Judging by yesterdays game, Hazard looks the superior option. I think Morata will come good when he gets up to speed though. Clearly not fully fit yet.

Got Alonso on wildcard last week and will be playing this week with little hope of a clean sheet. Kante out is a big miss, adding Bakoyoko, Luiz and Drinkwater to that means the game should be pretty open. A 3-3 result against Roma is a pretty good indicator of that I think.

I'm even considering starting Richarlison over Gross, reckon that is a good idea?

Planning on getting Courtois for Forster in a few weeks so if anything this means more people will sell him and he will drop to 5.4 and Kante should be back.

The obvious option is Morata and I'll judge his performance this week before taking a hit to bring in for Vardy.

-96.3 and will continue to drop you'd expect. I'm leaving it like 4-5 weeks anyway so by then he should be 5.4 and if not I can reevaluate.

I still believe Hazard to be overpriced, given the last two scores you mentioned. As simple as that. Overpriced.

Otherwise, surely he will score and make some of us happy. As my WC approaches (GW11/12) I am stuggling as to what I should do but not convinced yet. And I will not get him w/o a WC.

Bought Alonso last week for the 14 game run which started horrendously! It's just a blip and they will come good over these fixtures I'm sure (11 out of the next 13 are as good as it can get really). Probably get Morata soon.

I have Hazard, Luiz and Azpi after last week's WC - worked out terribly last week.
Will ditch Luiz if he's confirmed out for Saturday but going to C Hazard I think as although Chelsea as a team are not looking good, Hazard seems to have hit some form with 2 goals last night in ECL and 2 for Belgium during IB

Hazard and Azpilicueta. I think everyone needs a big hitter differential and Hazard is mine. Perfect for a captaincy as well if its not clear who to go for. This week it will be split Jesus, Lukaku, Sterling et al so Haz may be a chance go make up ground.

Already have Alonso, Azpi and Morata (+ 2FTs), and certainly not looking to get rid of any of them with these fixtures coming up.

With fewer obvious defensive options this week, I think Chelsea defenders are still up there competing for slots in our teams. They offer a safe option despite (very) recent form, because they are still Chelsea - still a fairly solid top team. Some of their defenders offer the combination of goal/assist and CS potential that you can't get elsewhere. The best alternatives to Chelsea defenders are cheap defenders, barring a few (possible) exceptions.

FYI for more discussion on Alonso and his stats, go here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/10/18/the-scout-squad-gameweek-9-3/?hc_page=27#hc_comment_16745630 and here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/10/19/frisking-the-fixtures-gameweek-9-the-strong-4/?hc_page=4#hc_comment_16747175

If it was away, everyone would captain Kane.

Since Kane is home I will go for Lukaku (c)

    My team is:

    Elliot, Foster
    Alonso, Jones, Davies, Kolasinac, Rosenoir
    Salah, Eriksen, Ritchie, Cork, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Joselu

I really need to get some City coverage, but I've got too many cheap players to do anything with. I only have .3 in the bank but I have two free transfers.

Im thinking Kola, Davies and Ritchie out for

    A: Cresswell, Naughton and Sterling

A for me, but Kola and Ritchie don't have such a bad fixture this week. If you really want City mid, then do it. You definitely need at least one.

      Good luck!

Despite his underlying numbers Alonso is yet to justify the prize tag his owners are paying, defence looks shaky without Kantè and now Bakayoko and Luiz are doubtful. Watford has shown that they are not a team that is shy in going forwards against the big teams. It is indeed frustrating considering the fixtures and I believe they will confound a lot of FPL managers before an actual alternative steps forward (which I won't be surprised to see in Hazard or Morata for example). Personally, the temptation of getting Haz increases by the fact that he now seems to be playing more and more as a forward. As for Morata I believe other striker options are more attractive for now (Jesus, Kane, Lukaku's fixtures after Spurs and the return of Agüero). Other than that Chelsea at the moment looks promising but they do have to justify their prize tags before they would be considered as viable as Man City assets are at the moment.

I have Alonso & agree. But holding for now as can't find a better long-term fixture prospect (esp GW14 to GW27).

I wish I had dropped Alonso on my wildcard. I thought he would be on higher points by now. Scared of dropping him this weekend! Its a tough decision.

If Luiz recovers quickly and continues in the defensive midfield role, he might be an interesting asset to go to. Allows for 1.1m ITB to strenghten other areas where necessary.

Will personally consider that or Valencia as long-term fixture prospect, Man Utd are incredibly solid at back this season and we all know how Jose loves to park that bus against big teams. So far it has been more rewarding than Chelsea defenders, they will most likely not reconstruct their defensive performance of last season..

Not sure what underlying numbers you are looking at because I think they look very poor for an attacking full back/wing back

    Whats the situation with Morata?

If he's fit and starting then he's my ideal replacement for Lukaku/Kane

I'm going to un-bite my tongue and say if Chelsea want to win the league, Morata is more important to have fit all season then Hazard

    Just found this from 2011:

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/european/will-rotation-come-back-to-haunt-bar-a-6274937.html

"Pep Guardiola has picked 25 different line-ups in the last 25 matches.

Were he not the mastermind of 12 trophies in three and a half seasons he might have Barcelona fans accusing him of being unable to make his mind up."

Seems La Liga Fantasy Players have had the same issues as us in the past.

Hazard had 0 threat last weekend. Do you think he will score against Watford?
Or more safe to buy Jones this weekend with 7 clean sheets against Huddersfield. Can he make one more cs?

Jose is playing mind games. Nothing wrong with Jones. Him being ill/injured is just an excuse just in case Lindelof makes a costly mistake.

‘But Jones was ill/injured, I had to play Lindelof’

Im on wc and investigating the best budget picks comparing on FPL transfermarkt value, history and future prospects.

    1. Hunemeier. Cost 3.9 will probably play because Duffy is injured, and other CB's aren't for the first line up.

    2. Lowton. For me hes over Ward because hes more expensive player on transfermakrt and also first right back in Burnley. For me more nailed. Mee is the most expensive comparing those 3.

    3. Richarlison ! Wooow, didn't know that hes that much expensive.

    4. Atsu. Very very fast fella. His price will rise soon both on transfermarkt and fpl...

    5. Dunk. Cost 4.4 and hes first choice CB and most expensive from defenders in his team.

Can you add someone else ?

Wanted to mention Mariappa but dont know how long will be injured Prodl and Cathcart ...

Posted this as a reply at end of last article before realising it got lost. Wondering if others think it sounds about right.

From link above, Jones should start this weekend and Bailly wont.

Jones obviously carrying a niggle for some time. Never plays in CL clearly managing his fitness to protect him.

I think their next 8 games are likely to go as follows

    Hud (PL) Jones
    Swansea (league cup) Lindelof
    Spurs (PL) Jones
    Benfica (CL) Lindelof
    Chelsea (PL) Jones
    ---- International Break ----
    Newcastle (PL) Jones
    Basle (CL) Lindelof
    Brighton (PL) Jones

The break would be a chance to get in some recovery time but they'll need him for PL games but Europe (lets face it) is easy in group stages and league cup isn't important

Does this seem about right? Or am I second guessing it too much?
