Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

        Tackling Pep’s rotation.

Everyone is a winner with Pep…and a loser too.

Pick three Manchester City players and over the course of a three Gameweek period pretty much all will get a double digit haul. But when they will play and which ones will get them each week remains a mystery.

Last week was great for Jesus and Sterling owners, while this week was awful for them and great for Otamendi owners. Sane owners did well both weeks - but will they again against West Brom?

For me a lesson is not to avoid them – they are too good. Those that swerved them in Gameweek 8 suffered. While this week Otamendi proved a saviour for many.

But given we cannot second guess rotation (eg Sterling getting a complete rest after coming off after 60 mins or so midweek), perhaps we do need to be looking at different captaincy options. Those that captained Sterling and had a credible vice captain this week may end up doing well but its still not ideal. Those who captained Jesus will certainly be wondering if they can trust Pep’s troops again with the armband.

How are you dealing with Pep’s rotation?

        Avoid altogether?

Spread the risk with a striker, creative midfielder and defender?

        Avoid captaining them?

Or think, what the hell, and captain one of Aguero or Jesus whenever they have a good fixture and hope for the best.

Think two midfielders and one defender is the way to go forward..

Augero/Jesus a no go for me simply because I'd want to captain a player having that outlay..

Kun is one to monitor , although I do think he does not start next weekend

Pre emoted Jesus rotation so switched him to Morata and kept Sane but was pure luck. People will soon start to avoid city I think. Aguero may become a regular feature so a lot of traffic is set to go that way.

          Can't help but laugh.

Last GW, fantasy managers were reluctant to captain Sterling, after watching him play 60mins mid week and this gw complete rested with many putting the armband on him.

For me I've got Sterling, Silva and Jesus a trio that have earned me a combined points of 39 pts over two Gameweeks - that's 6.5 pts each a week.

How can I ditch them on that form?

One of the first rules of Fantasy Football is to select sure starters? But is it time to revise that given City are so productive as a Fantasy unit - albeit not week to week for their players?

I'm certainly wary of the captaincy though - especially when Kane is away against easy opposition, Lukaku is at home from GWK 12 and Liverpool assets have good fixtures.

Was an extreme good first week though with the 7-2 against stoke, dont think you could expect those numbers in the future, I might be wrong though. I will get aguero and already have sterling but sterling could easily go soon. Just gotta ride the city momentum right now.

I wouldn't keep them all with Eriksen on form , Salah/Coutinho and their fixtures and may add Hazard to this list ...
And surely you want more than 6 pts ... otamendi is going to hurt you again soon

Hazard still a work in progress I think. Will look at him GWK 14 onwards. Very little returns this weekend for his price in a 4-2 game. Also his away form over the years has been a constant worry.

But yes to Eriksen and Liverpool. Although I am tempted by an Eriksen to Salah/Coutinho hokey cokey next week. Got two frees so can get him back perhaps via one of the City mids. do not fancy returns from Eriksen v Utd, but so fancy Sterling and Silva (in particular Silva) away to WBA.

Defence looks settled and therefore worthy of investment. That leaves two places for the midfield/attack if you want to max out on assets. I still think they’re all worth it despite the rotation risk. D.Silva and Agüero seem the least prone to rotation so they would be the safest picks in my opinion, however I fancy a G.Jesus & Agüero double up 🙂

Currently on Sterling, Silva and Aguero but worried about Sterling. Think that Otta, Silva/KDB and Aguero is the best use of City.

One thing's for sure, FPL deserve immense credit for the way they priced the City players. They got it absolutely spot on.

The most secure starters in each position- Walker, KDB and Aguero- are the most expensive. The cheaper players are higher rotation risks and much less captainable.

Otamendi has outperformed his price but 2 goals in 9 is on the good side of variance and the Kompany injury has helped a lot. Silva has also made a mockery of his price but is clearly overperforming when you look at xG/xA player and team numbers. He is also a huge rotation risk going into the xmas period, and is always a big injury risk.

My personal take on it is that Aguero is still by far the best option, with relatively secure minutes, penalties and massive ceiling. Having any of the mids is probably good but make sure you have a bench. Jesus looks the worst option when set against Kane, Aguero, Lukaku and Morata.

So credit to FPL for managing to get this almost spot on and therefore making the game difficult and interesting. A 10m Aguero, a 7m Sane or a 6m Walker would have made them no-brainers and caused generic identiteams.

I transferred in Sane and Aguirre this week. I kind of learnt my Pep lesson last season when his rotation hurt me so bad. I tend to always do what doesn't make sense with him and it worked so far. I have G.jesus too by the way it I captained Aguero. Lucky I guess.

We all have opinions on who Pep will and won't start and people can try to second guess Pep, but the best thing to do is look at the cold, hard facts. Who gets the most starts? Who gets subbed on and off? Who has played the most minutes?

The answers to how Pep thinks lies in what he actually DOES: http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/21369/

I already had Sterling and Otamendi, and my wild card allowed me to add Silva.

I am very happy with this arrangement.

I will leave the expensive forwards to the experts - I can't fathom Guardiola's methods, myself.

If you have a great non city captain option do it otherwise I would roll the dice with a city player.

I captained Sterling and Jesus vc 🙁 as I had no great alternative

I went all in with Sterling / Sane / Jesus/

I figured always 2 of 3 would play. over 2 GW's I've had 4 starts and 4 double digit returns so not bad really.

I still think going with three attackers is better (unless you think Otamendi will keep scoring goals).

We mustn't forget what happened last week. City look defensively solid this season, so they're going to keep clean sheets. But you can still cover that with defenders from other teams, perhaps a second United defender. But you're not replacing a City attacker's potential.

Sterling even though he was benched has got me 17 points in 2 weeks (2 this week off my bench). That's still fantastic. If he plays next week, it's all good.

Aguero and Jesus for their price tags have to be captained to provide value, but I think we have to take that risk.

Part of me thinks I may have ridden my luck with Sane over the last 2 weeks and change to a Pool mid.

What happened yesterday with Sterling and Jesus could end up being my misfortune next week. I need my 2nd mid to be playing 'every' week especially when I'm carrying two 4.5's.

A reliable 2 points from a cheap nailed-on bench player is OK.

The problems come when your bench players are non-starters.

Try to own the more nailed on ones, don't captain any of them.

For me that rules out both Aguero and Jesus as both take up too much money not to be captain options.

Added Stones & Sterling last week.
It's the same conundrum as Liverpool mids last year. Each week one of them will produce a haul. Have to be patient. Prices are still too good when compared to other premium mids.

Ive had silva & otamendi for a while so happy to keep those (for now)
Added sterling this week as i felt i needed a 2nd city attacker as they are scoring so many goals!
Would like aguero but can see him rested v west brom so keeping sterling for now.
If you have city attackers you need to have a good bench

With Sterling coming off after 70 minutes in the Champions League, I was certain he would start and transferred him in for Mkhitaryan. If a player gets double figures either side of a benching like Salah did earlier in the season it's worth riding it out. I've got triple City, Jesus and Silva being the other two. You've just got to be patient. Their points sequence is going to be different to Lukaku's.

As for captain, I put it on Kane this week. For me, it's too risky picking a City player. Their points are spread across half a dozen or so players whereas with Spurs or Liverpool you have a better chance of choosing the right one.

Nice post, as you say, won't be avoiding, just won't be captaining going forwards.

The fact that I'm not comfy captaining them now makes me wonder if Jesus is the better option over Aguero and use that extra 1m elsewhere, tough call to make as Aguero is Aguero.

Had Sterling and Jesus last week, don't think I'd swap the highs of last week because of the lows this week, would be happily taking it on the chin if Jesus wasn't C, that is the lesson to learn quickly, won't happen again.

The post summarises it all; they are all good and in the long run, everyone will benefit, so having them is more important than the question of which to have. Had only Stones until last night when I did Mkhi to Sterling. His absence of yesterday makes me confident he will not miss the next two and especially against Arsenal, I can visualise him scoring...

Jesus and Aguero are too expensive if you’re not going to captain. Silva and KDB seem more nailed on and can be trusted. If Jesus and Aguero are going to alternate you’re playing Russian roulette even having them. Prices in excess for players who will score heavy when they play but might only play 50% of games. I’d rather a cheaper option who will play all the time and outscore them over a season if they really do alternate. The caveat is that maybe Pep was resting Jesus after a lot of minutes for club and country recently and will go back to playing both up front. If that’s the case it’s a different story.

Well there's no point bothering with Kun or Jesus because you just don't know who is going to show up and for their pricetags, that's criminal.

I would stick with Silva and Sterling and add Otamendi. That way, you have some permanency and coverage for defensive and attacking returns.

Have Jesus and Sterling. One week was great, other awful as you say.

This being said, Sterling C and Kane VC turned out pretty well. Got a bit lucky there.

Want to do Alli out Salah in this week so will keep my City attackers and hope for the best. But if I'm left disappointed again with Jesus I'll get rid for a cheap striker and replace T Carroll with Sané. I think.

For my first 4 defenders I tend to use 2 x 5.5-6m defenders from top sides, and 2 x 4.5m defenders with good fixtures coming up.

But I can never remember from previous seasons if I found it useful to have another 4.5m defender or if the 5th defender was just a waste and may as well be a non-playing 4m guy.

        46pts moves me from 1.1m to 706k.

First time in the top 1m this year after a shocking start. Small mercies but I’ll take it. Onwards and upwards.

I'm bringing Otem & Silva in to partner Sterling. At least then their absences won't impact my captain. Which would be Kane or Lukaku

That seems like it's probably because he's had to play Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool (Off the bench) at home. Only Brighton as an easyish fixture and they're not pushovers.

I'm in a 5 person league in draft so I'm guessing my draft team is probably better than yours.
