Rest and rotation casts a huge shadow over Wednesday’s events, until one particular Liverpool player produced 23 minutes of magic.

The Fantasy world went into meltdown when teamsheets were released, with a cast of big hitters either benched or rested completely.

Among the worst hit appeared to be the 49.0% of managers who had made Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) most owned player. The free-scoring midfielder was named only among the substitutes for the visit to Stoke City.

More than 200,000 managers made him the second most popular transfer target ahead of Gameweek 14 – trailing only Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata – while a further 8.7% handed the Egyptian the captaincy and promptly endured 67 minutes of despair until Jurgen Klopp finally introduced Salah from the bench.

The Reds had been holding on to a tenuous 1-0 lead given to them by Sadio Mane’s goal from a Dominic Solanke cross before Salah weaved his magic, hitting a brace that brought in 11 vital points – with two bonus points adding to the haul.

Mane and Emre Can provided the assists as Salah’s amazing scoring run continued. He now has three braces from the last four Gameweeks and leads the race for the Golden Boot with 12 goals.

Salah’s prodigious season is starting to assume Suarez-like proportions, and he brings the added joy of extra points from goals and clean sheets that come from a midfielder.

In a season where big-hitting attackers are suffering patchy runs or rotation issues – compounded by Gameweek 14’s events – Salah serenely glides on, putting previous Liverpool mainstays such as Philippe Coutinho, also benched tonight, and Robert Firmino in the shade.

With Liverpool looking forward to a fine short-term schedule (bha EVE WBA Bou), Salah’s ownership will surely surge above 50% for Gameweek 15, and his captaincy levels will also continue on an upward curve.

Reds defence deliver on the road

Klopp’s defence held on for a sixth clean sheet of the season, with Alberto Moreno and Joe Gomez spared rotation to start in the full-back spots once again.

The Spaniard has now started nine straight league matches, while the young England international has been involved in eight of the last nine.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool boss confirmed post-match that Ragnar Klavan missed out at the bet365 Stadium through illness.

The Stoke shut-out was Liverpool’s first away from home and with those strong fixtures to come, investment in one of this cut-price pair – they’re both currently available for 4.6 – appears attractive.

As for Stoke, they’ve now conceded 29 goals.

Only West Ham, who were thrashed 4-0 tonight, have allowed more, and the Potters have now kept just two clean sheets from their 14 matches this season.

Much as we’d like to scour the Stoke defence for cut-price options, their current form and confidence is just too weak – even in the light of improving fixtures.

I was originally planning to do Vardy and Silva to Hazard and Niasse this week for -4.

But with Vardy's form and fixtures I'm thinking hold and do Silva to Sterling instead. Maybe Otamendi to Mustafi next week.

I have a new Harry Kane theory. It's the "Harry Kane just isn't very good this season, is he? - theory".

Harry Kane is the biggest problem in my team. Without Kane, I could go Sanchez and Ozil. Without Kane, I can stock up on City. However, arguably, without Kane...I won't get his incoming hat trick this weekend. So very frustrating. I don't want him in my team. I don't captain him. But I am struggling to let go.

Can someone provide me with a really good reason why my "Harry Kane just isn't very good this season, is he? - theory" will be quashed this weekend?

Just my opinion but Spurs back up attacking wise is so thin that players such as Alli Erik and Kane cannot be rested when a dip in form happens or to give a rest when fatigued.

        8 years, 4 months ago

        Did this from previous weekend

To me its more about not having any decent options in attack to change things up. Look at last weekends benches for example-

Man U- Scott McTominay, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marouane Fellaini, Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera,Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Man City- Bernardo Silva, Eliaquim Mangala, Danilo ,Ilkay Gündogan, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko ,Claudio Bravo

Chelsea- Willy Caballero, Antonio Rüdiger, Willian , Cesc Fàbregas, Pedro, David Luiz , Victor Moses

Liverpool- Roberto Firmino, Andrew Robertson ,Sadio Mané ,Adam Lallana, Georginio Wijnaldum, Loris Karius, Trent Alexander-Arnold

Spurs-Michel Vorm , Serge Aurier , Fernando Llorente, Mousa Dembélé, Juan Foyth, Kyle Walker-Peters, Moussa Sissoko

Not much there for Spurs to shake up attack

Lamela coming back will be a boost. Strangely I think a switch of formation could be beneficial too.

The 3 at the back puts so much emphasis on Alli and Eriksen to create, so when they dip, you can really tell. And the wing backs aren't as strong as last year to compensate.

I'd like to see a 3 behind Kane (Alli, Eriksen & one of Lamela/Son), which would also give him closer support, which he has been lacking.

Wanyama coming back will be huge too, as Alli / Eriksen will be able to get further up the pitch.

        1. NachoMan
          • 10 Years

You're a non-member. That's the new theory you should be considering.

I may be contested here but if you look at the alternatives, there are Lukaku and Morata - would rather have Kane over them, or Aguero and Jesus who's game time is always in question, or Lacazette who is not exactly prolific atm.

      1. NachoMan
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

Very good point on forwards. I just can't help feel the real points are starting to come from midfield. Downgrading Kane would allow me to get Sanchez and Sane (for example).

I personally think that Alonso will get rested for the upcoming game. LWB is an extremely tiring position to play and given how Conte rotates Zappacosta and Moses here and there on the right, I wouldn't be surprised if Azpi or one of Zappa/Moses starts on the left against Newcastle.

Arsenal have 7 CS's so far this season. Mustafi has played 8 games so far. and earned 7 CS. Either he's incredibly lucky or makes Arsenal better.

Kolasinac or Gomez for last defender spot? Have Lukaku and Gross if that influences this at all.

Best option? (Would be a -4 to allow me to upgrade Elliott to Pope)

    A) Kiko
    B) Moreno/Gomez
