Sergio Aguero stars for a nearly full-strength Manchester City, while a much-changed Chelsea are held goalless by Norwich.

Three other Premier League teams will have to try again in replays as the FA Cup produces mixed results – and one sacking – on a busy Saturday of action.

For a manager who had gone very public with his claims that the Premier League’s packed Christmas schedule was ‘killing’ his players, Pep Guardiola showed them little FA Cup mercy.

The side he selected against Burnley was packed with regular starters, with only Ederson, Kevin De Bruyne and the fit-again Kyle Walker handed a rest.

Even then, the latter two were brought on in the second-half as City recovered from a 1-0 deficit, courtesy of an Ashley Barnes strike, with four unanswered goals after the break.

Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva were on the scoresheet, but the recovery owed much to Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine scored twice on what was his seventh straight start in all competitions – his longest unbroken run in the team all season.

An injury to Gabriel Jesus is likely to keep that run going for at least another 3-5 weeks, which will be music to the ears of his 22.2% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership.

Post-match, even Guardiola himself was talking up his forward’s need to play.

“I have to say it is an honour to have Sergio under my command. He is the kind of player who always wants to play, so I can understand that sometimes he is sad when he doesn’t play, but I want him to be happy.”

In his pre-match press conference, Guardiola had also backed Aguero to take on the workload demands of being his only fit striker.

“We need Gabriel, we need Sergio, we need both. We’ll have maybe two months without Gabriel. Two months is a lot of games, so we just have one.

He [Aguero] was banned two or three times [under me], because he’s so aggressive without the ball and after that he was always good, always fit. So hopefully we can handle it until the end, because of course we need the striker’s goals.

We have other options, not like a striker, but guys with mentality to be around the box who can solve that problem.”

FPL managers will be far happier if Aguero is rested for the first leg of City’s EFL Cup semi-final against Bristol City in midweek ahead of a league schedule (liv NEW WBA bur LEI) offering plenty of potential for their man to add to his 111 points for the season.

But trying to anticipate Guardiola’s rotation decisions remains close to impossible. He kept bit-part players Yaya Toure, Eliaquim Mangala and Brahim Diaz on the bench throughout yesterday’s tie while starting Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones and introducing goalscorer Silva – a starter just four times since Gameweek 10 – after 79 minutes.

Meanwhile, David Silva, back from his latest trip to Spain following the premature birth of his son, and even Raheem Sterling, who has started 11 of the last 12 matches in the league, played the full 90 minutes against the Clarets.

The 37.0%-owned Sterling, just like the rest of City’s stars, will likely get a further break in January, with the Champions League to be factored in again from the middle of next month.

That hasn’t stopped FPL managers making Sterling and Aguero the fourth and fifth most purchased players respectively ahead of Gameweek 23.

Tuesday’s EFL Cup teamsheet looks crucial with the two-legged semi-final surely the most likely hot-spot for rotation of Guardiola’s key attacking assets over this period.

Change costs Chelsea

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was considerably more willing to use the FA Cup to shuffle his resources.

He made nine changes for the tie at Norwich City, with only Gary Cahill and Tiemoue Bakayoko retaining their places from the midweek draw at Arsenal.

Unfortunately, another stalemate was the result, which means a replay at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, January 16, between Gameweeks 23 (Leicester City (h)) and 24 (Brighton (a).

Chelsea also have an EFL Cup semi-final first leg tie with Arsenal this Wednesday, so the fixtures are piling up for the Blues.

At least key Fantasy assets such as Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso didn’t even travel to Norwich. Neither did Eden Hazard, who is nursing a minor injury, though the 17.5%-owned Alvaro Morata was in the squad and came on after 74 minutes, to no avail.

Meanwhile, David Luiz return to fitness may cause Andreas Christensen owners some concern, though the Brazilian’s unconvincing performance at Carrow Road, amid continued speculation on his future, should offer reassurance. The replay would also make it very likely that Christensen will start both league matches, with Luiz set to be given a second outing against Norwich.

Extra fixtures for trio

Three other Premier League sides also face replays.

Leicester City drew 0-0 at Fleetwood Town, with injury denying Jamie Vardy a return to his footballing roots, although defender Ben Chilwell was fit to start after a two-match absence.

The sides will now play again on the Tuesday between the Foxes’ January 13 trip to Chelsea and a home match with Watford.

Swansea City were also held goalless, by Wolves, in a tie in which Renato Sanches picked up a hamstring injury and Leroy Fer was sent off.

The midfielder will now miss three matches – the Tuesday replay sandwiched between Newcastle away and a visit from Liverpool.

Bournemouth had to come back from two goals down to earn their second chance against Wigan.

Lys Mousset and Steve Cook, in the 93rd minute, got the goals, with the Wednesday, January 17 replay coming between a visit from Arsenal and a trip to West Ham for the Cherries.

Elsewhere…

Huddersfield’s 2-1 win at Bolton came at a price, as the 6.1%-owned striker Collin Quaner limped off with a hamstring problem.

Head coach David Wagner is optimistic that the setback for his compatriot was not a major concern…

“Quaner felt his hamstring but I think we have caught it soon enough for it not to be a problem”

The winger’s replacement, Rajiv van la Parra, opened the scoring before Danny Williams added a second within a minute.

The Terriers were much-changed for the tie, although Laurent Depoitre (7.3%) also started and defender Terence Kongolo, on loan from Monaco, was impressive on his debut.

Watford saw off Bristol City 3-0, with Troy Deeney scoring on his return from a four-match ban.

Etienne Capoue and Andre Carillo were also on the scoresheet – the latter now has either a goal or an assist from his last three starts in all competitions.

Midfielder Richarlison, at 15.7% the most popular Watford player in FPL, was rested, although he did come on after 69 minutes.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino made just two changes to the side that lost to Crystal Palace as the Saints beat Fulham 1-0.

James Ward-Prowse’s first-half goal was enough to see Southampton progress.

Alan Pardew finally got his first victory as West Brom manager with a 2-0 win at Exeter.

Salomon Rondon and Jay Rodriguez scored the goals, but Kieran Gibbs picked up a knock that makes him an early doubt for next weekend’s home match against Brighton.

Newcastle breezed past Luton 3-1, with two goals for Ayoze Perez and one from Jonjo Shelvey.

However, defender Jamaal Lascelles (5.8%) lasted just 31 minutes of the tie before going off with a groin injury, though reports state that he is confident to be in contention for Saturday’s visit from Swansea City.

Mark Hughes’ final match in charge at Stoke City was a shock 2-1 defeat by Coventry City.

He was sacked after the upset, with a Charlie Adam penalty not enough to save either the tie or his job.

Did a little bit of research on Aguero and "His Form" this season.
His output is actually his best since the 14/15 season where arguably he was at his peak.
During the 14/15 season he averaged 7.68 points per 90 mins of football which equated to a point every 11.7 mins played.
This season he is averaging 7.55 points per 90 mins played which equates to a point every 11.9 mins !

        Still not as impressive imo.
Played a lot less. Got a few pens. Tap ins. He doesn’t look like himself and I can’t see him going mental like he used to.
This being said, I wish I could find a way to bring him in, as I think he will be very good over the next game weeks!

Think he gets a few pens and tap ins every season ! 😉 Not saying he is as sharp as he used to be and he isnt the main focal point of the team anymore but he always benefits from a run of games which he is now going to get,is looking on form and has some great upcoming fixtures playing for a man City team that can destroy anybody on their day !

Yea I don’t think his problem is points.

His problem for most FPL managers this year is his rotation.

However, now Jesus is out, all aboard the agueroooooooo train!

        Very nice, thanks.
Thing is with City performing the way they are this season, his output isnt a surprised.
His PPG is great, but the rotation was an issue. When he plays, he gets points, thats proven over the years.
With Jesus out, i really want him, but i also fear for his rotation because with the league pretty much won, surely Pep will consider playing a false 9 due to cup/UCL games?

Whereas Kane and Lukaku will be absolutely nailed in the league, regardless of Champions league. Both their teams are fighting for top 4.

This leads me to my dilemma, need your help. Played WC and I’m almost all set but can’t decide on last couple of players, so far I am set on the following:

        Adrian (speroni)
        Jones
        Alonso
        Stones
        Davies
        (Shaw)
        Salah
        Sterling
        Lingard
        Kane

Do I now get 1 of the following 3 options:

        A) - aguero & Arnie
        B) - sane & hazard
        C) - de bruyne & hazard (downgrade shaw and Davies probably for burly def’s)

Please help me decide , I’m edging towards B, as this will also give me more money for a good bench instead of just mcburnie and Quaner haha

And Sterling is averaging 8.70 points per 90 minutes played. He costs around 3m cheaper.

Now why would you pay 11.7 if you're never going to captain him over Sterling? He won't deliver value without captaincy.

Why would you? Sterling has been much better this season. Much more consistent and just as explosive. Aguero has blanked often. And as I said, 8.70 points per 90 minutes. You don't captain the worse option voluntarily.

With Jesus out, I think we'd be more comfortable captaining Aguero over Sterling. Sterling has more chances of rotation than Aguero now (however low they may be) and Aguero does have pens. Not a bad short term investment.

Their fixtures don't look congested at all for this month. Sterling is starting at least 4 out of 5 games even now and has been their best player after KDB. There's no strong reason to worry about his rotation and use that as an excuse to get Aguero (who could still get rotated as well, this is Pep).

Pens? He's had pens all season and Sterling has still been better. Pens are merely a bonus. You don't factor that into actually captaining a worse player.

Sterling's been in the form of his life, whereas Aguero's been mediocre compared to what he's capable of. It could easily swing the other way soon.

"It could easily swing the other way soon" - That makes no sense.

Sterling's been in the form of his life consistently all season, not just a few weeks. Aguero's been below par ever since Pep became the manager (a season and a half). There is nothing to assume that it could swing back. No point spending 11.7 based on an assumption backed by no evidence. Just go with what's happened all season.

We're making predictions based on the future just as much as the past. The horrific side of Sterling's finishing might catch up with him, and Aguero is capable of brilliance regardless of his manager. I said "could" and not "will", since FPL is just a series of glorified guesses at times. I'll probably have just have Sterling and ignore Aguero, but anything could happen, so it depends on personal opinion.

Interesting. But in the context of the overall performances of the teams he's playing in, I'm not sure I'd say this suggests he's back to his personal best. Still, looking a great pick for the next few at least now Jesus is out . . .

Wenger is to blame for the result, no game til next weekend and he plays that team with no first teamers on the bench to bring on if it goes wrong. But as a spurs fan I love it! LOL

You don't want to pay a licence fee but you do want them to get rights to £5bn leagues? There is absolutely no reason why they shouldn't show female football. Only if it is televised will it become a bigger sport finanically to be able to encourage more women into sport from a younger age which is good for society in general. The rights will have cost next to FA anyway. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Some people will like it and will watch it though. It's not like it was a toss up between PL rights and female football rights and they went for the latter. They are in no way comparable because of cost.

I think you’re missing my point.

I am quite happy to pay the licence fee, if what we were paying for was good quality.

You’re telling me they can’t compete with BT and Sky for the PL rights? Rubbish.

I feel resentment at having no choice but to pay for a product that I do not like. BBC have rapidly gone downhill over the years.

As things stand, I’d rather have no BBC channels and not pay the fee. (Until they bought the rights to better programmes)

Even Sky couldn't afford all the rights which is why BT own some and Sky own the others. BT had to organise their finances very well to be able to bid for what they have too. BBC can't compete with that unless they don't show anything else and there will be people that won't want that. Or should they just show what you want? Better programmes is very subjective.

But I’m sure they could afford a portion of the games?

And there’s no excuse for the cricket. They also lost F1 (not that I’m a fan).

Their selection of sport is pretty shocking you have to admit that

The comment about foreigners was a joke because people that usually make stupid comments about things like women's football etc. usually also believe that shite too. Usually people that take the time to make comments about the BBC (I do agree with you the quality of the news has gone down hill in recent years though) on anonymous forums are also DM readers. The bit that wasn't a joke was my comment defending their decision to show women's football above. Television isn't just for you and women's and men's football are not comparable in the bidding processes because monetary costs.

Your point about women’s football would be absolutely correct if they actually catered for other mainstream audiences with PL football as well. And cricket is another classic example.

I'd love to have the PL on the BBC again (and 3 o'clock showings) but it is in no way viable with the price of the rights these days. The fact that 2 international private sector providers have to share the rights and even then it is only for half of the showings (as they don't show the 3pm footy) and both charge £30-40 a month, which is far more than the £120 a year licence fee is indicative of the difficulty of purchasing and maintaining the rights.

With the cricket, I am not sure how they lost out to Sky for it to be honest. Can't imagine the rights are that expensive. They could have kept the county cricket at least. I can only imagine Sky bid a higher price just for the coverage so they could then sell advertising space too.

The crickets rights are actually very expensive for what are essentially summer tests and county games. Not particularly great content for regular tv networks who can't devote airtime to a whole day's play.

BBC have PL highlights, that is what they can afford. But then, this isn't really about sports rights.

What is it about then? The whole thing was about TV rights and whether the BBC should have got th rights to women's football or not was how it started. I think they should have. There are wider positiive consequences across society if they do. They could put the all-day cricket on one of the BBC channels that isn't BBC1 or 2 or just make a new channel.

When people complain about the BBC, it's either because they think the network should cater to only their tastes, or that their is a perceived left bias.

The ECB made their decision and are beginning to see the effects. Women's football has a long way to go, I think it'll only break through when it can get a weekly league game on the BBC or ITV. F1 always seemed a strange one to me, it doesn't sit well with me that licence money should go to a sport that is unashamed elitest

It stops player arguments - I watched Sporting Lisbon against Porto the other night and a controversial last minute penalty was awarded - without VAR there would have been a 5 minute slanging match and a 20-man punch-up, but instead the correct decision was made in less than 30 seconds.

Will also stop diving eventually as players will know they won't get away with it.

        1997 Middlesboro tripple gw. Gw 37, 3rd 5th and 8th of May.

        Aston Villa, H, 3-2, Ravanelli 2, Beck.
Man Utd, A, 3-3, Junino, Emerson, Hignett.
        Blackburn, A, 0-0.

Remeber Boro fielded three different keepers that gw..

Don't understand why Arsenal fans are so bothered. Priority no.1 should be the Europa League. Automatic CL entry. Priority no.2 the PL. Priority no.3 the EFL Cup and Priority no.4 the FA Cup.

If I was a PL manager I would withdraw my team from the EFL Cup. Waste of time competition. Why does England have two cup competitions? Stupid.

Holgate accused Firmino of racism even though,
Ref was there, he didn't react to anything
Players were there, no direct reaction to it
      Firmino can't speak English
      Holagte can't speak Portuguese

Holgate should be banned for lying.

You don't have to speak a language fluently to know one word FFS, nobody knows what happened apart from Firmino and Holgate. Hopefully the refs mic picked something up, although not sure if that's recorded or not

I think the ref went to the 4th official to check if the mic had picked anything up. If it had, he'd surely have been dismissed there and then.

They were when they signed for Arsenal and Spurs respectively. Wenger has never developed young players - he takes good young players (e.g Fabregas, Anelka, Henry) and just plays them so their natural ability comes through.

Are you really telling me Walcott had no ability when Wenger signed him. You are talking crap if that is the case. Wenger has ruined Walcott. He should have stayed at Southampton or gone to Spurs.

                  Walcott is fast.

                  Bale is fast.

                  That’s where the similarities end

You have a poor memory of Walcott at Saints. It is a very easy thing to say Walcott was crap when he was a youngster because of the way his career has panned out. But the reality is that Wenger ruined him. In the same way he ruins many players who like to dribble and run with the ball.

                      Could not disagree more.

Walcott should take some personal responsibility for his own failings over the years.

He has not developed his own game and that is through lack of application.

You can’t blame Wenger for that

Get what you're saying to large degree, but ain't no way Walcott is comparable to Bale. Bale much better all around.

            My two cents
Walcott and bale def not the same...different players entirely from positioning to strengths and weaknesses.
Only similarity is the Southampton connection
In saying that discounting the last year and a half Walcott has been awesome for arsenal in that RW role so 'he ruined him' is not accurate at all, he's just not playing now

            Just saying 😀

Waste of time Forest going through.

Sure they put up a good fight but they’re still mediocre at best and will end up losing to Notts County in the next round.

Forget “The Magic”, it simply adds nothing to the cup.

We'll just tell anyone not in the Premier League that they're not playing next season then eh? Actually, there's some piss poor teams in the Premier League too. We'll just make it the top four from the season before go straight into the semis of the cup.

Might be for the best. Saves time at least.

All that giant killing is fine for a round or so but it’s inevitable that a big team will win the cup.

The Blackburn away match was re-arranged after 'Boro had failed to play the fixture in December as they had too many injured/ill players, they were deducted 3 points as a punishment and that was enough to relegate them at the end of the season.

As an arsenal fan i don't really care about the cup but the state of our team in general is shocking...no idea how we are gonna break back into top 4 anytime soon
Cech can still stop shots but makes mistakes and can't save a penalty
          Koscielny is always injured
          Mustafi same
Bellerin is ok but has not progressed
          Monreal is getting old
Kolasanic great attacking fb but meh def positioning
          Ramsey always injured
          Xhaka loves a red card

I've said it over and over again....

Arsenal's biggest problem isn't Wenger or the players but the fans. This post is typical of them (no offence intended)...Until the fans adopt a more positive attitude they're going nowhere.

What Mourinho does to his players by wearing them down with criticism and negativity is exactly what the Arsenal fans do to their own players.

It is Wenger. Because he doesn't accept that he doesn't have the quality of players to win games like Man City or his invincibles do / did. But rather than adjust his tactics he plays the same game and they lose. Back in the day Wenger signed Gilberto Silva - a limited player, but had great defensive ability and energy. It is damning that Wenger hasn't signed a similar player to Gilberto since Gilberto left.

Australian here and looking from the outside the amount of pressure and hype from the media must make it difficult for the England players...in saying that international youth teams are doing really well so there's hope!

The pressure certainly seems especially high. To the point where it's detrimental to the cause.

People are banking on Aguero outscoring Kane with those fixtures. I am not convinced that he will given Aguero’s form this season.
Would love to, but I can’t get both in, But I am keeping Kane Because:
                  I don’t Trust Aguero fully
I have a bit of value in Kane, p I don’t Want to spend 2 transfers on the swap back and forth
Kane could easily match or outscore Kun and I don’t Think it is worth the risk
Better value City players than Aguero imo (Sterling, KDB, Silva, Ota).

I'm most likely going to do Kanexit for 3 weeks only problem is I don't know who I want to bring in. Maybe morata for gw25-27?

I wouldn’t even consider shipping Kane for Anyone else than Aguero tbh.

But could work out, just don’t see Morata suddenly smashing Them in despite his many, many chances lately

I already have aguero and he will be my captain those 3 weeks. I just think going kane to morata for 3 weeks considering morata and aguero both have 3 good fixtures both are getting chances both are quality players that should score goals one obviously more quality than the other being aguero which is why I will captain him. I think it's a good move. The only problem is I didn't play properly last year so I don't know how bad blank gameweeks and maybe instead of using transfers getting rid of Kane maybe it's smarter to use them to be well prepared for the blanks

I think Kane will outscore Morata even with the fixtures. And I always think of an FT worth some points as well, so if you are looking to get Kane back in a few weeks that has to be taken into account as well.
Especially if you want to use that transfer on preparing for blanks etc.
I haven’t really started looking at the probabilities of teams’ potential blanks yet, so can’t really help you out there.
                            Good luck

I'll be going Kane to morata and kun to Kane assuming jesus is back. I understand your points and in the end I will probably just end up holding kane and use transfers for problems in my squad rather than luxuries. Good luck to you too 🙂
