Gameweek 23 draws to a close at Old Trafford as Manchester United entertain struggling Stoke City.

Up against a defence that’s conceded more goals on the road than any side, the hosts boast three of the top 11 captains in Fantasy Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku (12.1%) remains the favoured attacker among Jose Mourinho’s contingent despite a run of two goals in the last nine Gameweeks.

Yet as evidenced by his goal and assist off the bench against Derby in the FA Cup, an enforced rest due to a head injury seems to have boosted the Belgian’s prospects.

Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba are also highly fancied, with the former drafted in by a massive 567,000+ FPL managers in time to face the Potters.

Certainly, Lingard is the form player on show tonight, with seven goals and a pair of assists in the last nine Gameweeks. He has, however, recorded points in just one of his last four Premier League matches at home.

Meanwhile, Pogba’s 12-point haul away to Everton last time out – his first double-digit return since Gameweek 12 – hints at a return to form. However, tonight’s teamsheet indicates that the Frenchman will be deployed in a deep-lying role alongside Nemanja Matic, with Ander Herrera dropping to the bench.

Having conceded just five goals at Old Trafford, a ninth home clean sheet looks to be on the cards for David De Gea’s 42% owners tonight.

Up against an attack that have scored just three times in their last five road trips, interest in Phil Jones is on the rise – he was the top transfer target in defence for Gameweek 23, earning over 191,000 new owners.

Mourinho also welcomes back the fit-again Antonio Valencia, who makes his first appearance since Gameweek 18 after recovering from a hamstring problem.

Despite missing the last four matches, he remains the fourth top-scoring defender in FPL thanks to two goals and 11 clean sheets in 18 outings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I would only have 3.3m for a midfielder then so can’t do that 🙁

I would love Kane in my team, but not sure how I’d do that unless I get rid of Aguero

Aguero to a Kane once Kane has played those 3 hard games. Only downside is you miss him v Southampton after his hat trick v them a few weeks back. But Aguero can cover with his fixtures over a 4 game spread.

Not too bad, he wasn't involved much in the first half as no-one was passing to him...second half he got frustrated but then created 3 great opportunities with assists, two of which Mata should have done better with and one with was a disallowed goal for offside. I'd keep if you own him

Surely any Lingard captainers lose the right to moan about casuals. There's a good reason casuals and ghost ship teams often do so well - they don't overthink it. The only real captaincy dilemma is whether to give the armband to Kane or Salah. Outside of that you're just going for differentials and trying to justify them. Every now and then they'll come off, like a random Alonso (C), but over the course of a whole season you are never going to guess correctly often enough to outscore double Kane or double Salah, even factoring in Kane's blanks. You just can't afford not to get double points when those types of explosive, high ownership players haul.

An the justifications that get thrown around ... Kane won't score against Burnley because Burnley, BFS will park the bus and Everton will only concede one goal, etc. It's all overthinking.

My belief has always been go with your gut instinct. My gut told me to captain Arnie but I chickened out last minute and went Kane, not much lost but it still stings.

I don't totally disagree with that. If my gut instinct is really telling me something I often go with it - but within reason. For example back in GW4 my gut told me to captain Kane away to Everton despite the early blanks and other people getting rid.

But there have to be some personal rules or guidelines too I think. I'm confident that if all managers looked back at the end of the season and did the sums, they would realise it would have been better to captain their heaviest hitters every single week and take the highs and lows.

        1. HashAttack
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 6 months ago

Think you are restricting yourself to just 1 or 2 choices (Kane/Salah) ... but it's not unreasonable to expect Aguero, Hazard, Morata to occasionally score big and we play this game with the idea that we can make good choices

I've tended to select which big hitter based of fixture ... It's been a case of good wins but bad captain points
Last 10 captain fixtures (form gw14) - SWA, NEW, whu, WBA, SOU, BOU, SWA, STK, swa&WHU , STK

Average base points per game is just 5.6 🙁

    4. MTPockets
      8 years, 6 months ago

Differential captains seldom work. Odds are the pick is wrong, not everyone else.
But I still do it sometimes when feel the need to try something different.

That's probably where it starts to go wrong too. A bit like what Az has just done. By hopping between strategies you run the risk of missing everyone's hauls. To go Kane (TC) the Lingard (C) is a mighty shift, for example. It's heavily fixture based. Too heavy maybe?

        1. MTPockets
          8 years, 6 months ago

Both were also form based but too non-consensus for me, even before getting into overall questionability. Every season I try differential caps (even just not top 5 in poll) and probably fail 9/10 times. It's very easy to forget the wisdom of the crowd thing - if you think everybody's missing something, from same available data, you're probably wrong.

What is your definition of a 'tough' fixture? Seems like you mean that it's against a top team, which is not always the same thing.

LIV - CITY was a 'tough' fixture for both and attackers cleaned up. ARS - LIV, LIV - Anyone, etc. Apart from Man U, these teams tend to attack and present each other with better opportunities than parked buses do.

I don't look at Liverpool and Arsenal games and think Spurs won't score many goals. In fact I think the complete opposite. I mean if the theory is that Spurs can't score against teams who go to Wembley and park the bus, the theory can't also be that Spurs can't score against good teams. If that were the case, Spurs would never score.

I'll be pretty shocked if Kane and Son both blank their way through GW25-27. The fixtures aren't putting me off at all. There are goals in those games and they're Spurs' two best goal scorers in outstanding form. And with the added bonus of knowing they don't blank in GW28.

Wilson and Tomkins for Depoitre and Duffy for -4...?

    In-form for the out-of-formers...

Don't think it warrants a hit. Palace's fixtures are awful.

He's top of the form table in the lowest price bracket and scored against Arsenal in their 2-3 loss just before new years. Also going to be mainly bench fodder...I just fancy Wilson to repeat his scoring antics against West Ham

2 FTs, not sure what to do with them. Any ideas appreciated.

    Adrian
    Otamendi, Christensen, Jones
    Salah, Sterling, Son, Arnie, Rich
    Kane, Firmino

    Subs: Speroni, DCL, Dunk, Fernandez

Get rid of Calvert Lewin and maybe think about replacing Richarlison if he blanks again

      Team looks great.

Alonso would be lovely in there. DCL looks a busted flush. Fernandez is crap (I own him).

Exact funds to go: Richarlison, Morata and DCL to Arnautovic, Aguero and Wilson. Would you?

All that for -4 is pretty good. Or just do the first 2 and avoid -4 but depends if you have a decent bench as DCL will only get minutes.

So you’d keep Hazard even though he doesnt perform well and is about to drop?

Yes. Blindly following price drops over points is a recipe for disaster in my opinion

If you go into a week already on a -4 on Monday, when 5 clubs still have a midweek cup game to negotiate you are asking for trouble.

Chelsea are playing Brighton. It is still a very good fixture.

Looking for thoughts on Mustafi, if you wouldn't mind.
-- Pros: Could nick a goal here and there, good fixtures
-- Cons: No CS in the past five; plus, 5 goals allowed in three games to the likes of CP, WBA and BOU

    What say you?

Hmm... good team, hard to know where to make the transfer. You probably want rid of Son and Eriksen to free funds for the transfers you mentioned considering upcoming fixtures, though they could score big at SOT. Eriksen > Lingard TAA> Alonso?
