We check in with Gameweek 31 for the last time now, assessing the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Mohamed Salah’s relentless quest for Fantasy Premier League points gathers pace as Liverpool’s form has many thinking twice over parting company with their key assets.

Meanwhile, we offer our final word on the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip in light of Saturday’s reduced set of fixtures.

The Player

So much Fantasy faith was pinned on Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack to deliver over Gameweek 31’s four matches.

Yet even the Egyptian managed to surpass our lofty expectations with an extraordinary display against Javi Gracia’s hapless Watford.

A sublime first season at Anfield stepped into the realms of the ridiculous as Salah ran riot against the Hornets, delivering a season-high tally of 29 points thanks to four goals and an assist.

With seven Gameweeks remaining, his tally of 266 points has already surpassed last season’s top scoring player, Alexis Sanchez, who returned 264 points in his final full campaign at Arsenal.

That’s better than Riyad Mahrez’s 240 points on his way to finishing first in Leicester’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign. It also eclipses the career-high tallies of the likes of Eden Hazard (233 points), Harry Kane (224 points) and Sergio Aguero (216 points).

One of only five players to produce more than 6.0 points per match (ppm) this term, Salah’s average of 8.9ppm is well clear of second-placed Aguero (7.0).

Indeed, with just one top-eight opponent remaining (cry eve BOU wba STO che BHA), the only surprise would now be if he fails to add to his 14 sets of double-digits and breach the 300-point mark come the end of the campaign.

The Team

After suffering a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Liverpool bounced back emphatically to help FPL managers to a bumper Gameweek.

The 5-0 victory over Watford also saw Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the points again, while at the back, the Reds delivered a thirteenth clean sheet of the campaign – just two less than the best defences, Man United and City, with fifteen apiece.

At a point when many are now eyeing up Wildcards to profit from the impending double Gameweeks, Salah’s ability to score big – and consistently do so – now surely makes him undroppable, regardless of the Reds’ lack of a double Gameweek.

Although many are keen to show Mane and Firmino the door, Klopp’s side served a timely reminder that getting rid doesn’t come without risk.

Saturday’s romp now means that Liverpool have scored three or more goals on 15 occasions – seven times at home and eight away showcases their consistency.

Firmino, meanwhile, has earned bonus in 11 of the 12 league matches he has scored in. As well as firing a hat-trick past Porto in the Champions League, Mane has hit his most consistency Fantasy form of the season, producing points in each of the last four Gameweeks.

Should Klopp’s men continue to rack up the goals and buck the growing exodus, those without Wildcards could profit if they keep faith in the Reds’ front three for those favourable remaining matches.

The Talking Point

This season’s first set of Gameweek postponements persuaded many – almost half a million managers – to unleash their Free Hit chip for Gameweek 31.

Although just four matches took place, Salah’s huge haul helped Free Hit chip managers average a hefty 95.5 points, gaining just over a 25-point margin on their rivals (70.1).

However, that margin could, and should, have been greater – only 80.6% of them decided to captain Salah.

On Sunday, Ragabolly’s look into the impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip also pointed out that planning for this round of fixtures cost, on average, a further three points for rivals.

Essentially, then, over 444,000 FPL managers chose the Free Hit chip as a means of navigating Gameweek 31’s four matches, with a lofty 94.7% earning a climb in ranking.

While that clearly can be chalked up as an undoubted success, it’s also worth pointing out that, despite just four fixtures taking place, Salah was the only player in the most transferred in XI for Gameweek 31 to claim double-digits.

Six others – James Tomkins, Andrew Robertson, Junior Stanislas, Jordon Ibe, Luka Milivojevic and Cenk Tosun – achieved this but were largely ignored.

Granted, while Stanislas and Tosun both went into the weekend in fine form, the likes of Tomkins, Robertson, Ibe and Milivojevic all chose the perfect time to deliver season-high returns.

While that only serves to highlight the unpredictability of such occasions, it’s worth bearing in mind that Liverpool were the only top-eight team in action in Gameweek 31.

Those retaining Free Hit chips will be hoping that Gameweek 35 is a little easier to pinpoint the key names and big scorers, with the Merseysiders, Man City and Arsenal all set for favourable fixtures in the six-match slate.

Having a play around with defender combos on WC.

Double Chelsea could be pretty tidy and a good differential. Thoughts?

    DDG / Fabs
    Alonso / Christensen / Lowton / VdH / Tomkins (great 34 fixt)
    Miki / Son / willian / Salah / Mahrez
    Auba / Firmino / Jayew

    Morning all,

Looking for balance like everyone on the WC:

    A) Alonso, Otamendi and Murray up front with Auba and Firmino,

    or

    B) Christensen, Monreal, and Vardy up front with Auba and Firmino.

    Thoughts always welcome.

I've held Alonso for ages, and I have yet to like a WC draft without him in it even with the extra fundage, yet can't help feeling I am clutching at (nostalgia) straws regarding his returns for his price, although he will still be a differential for me in my ML, I am 25 pts behind top spot.

Decent Smalling a definite risk even in the short term.

Arnie maybe worth a game or 2 but you will want to replace him sooner rather than later so worth a transfer down the line?

I might downgrade Smalling and go with with Sterling even though he could be rotated with City having the league wrapped up in a few games.

I feel we all need a City player at least, but choosing the lowest in terms of rotation risk is the dilemma.

Yeah Jones need to be monitored. He is not in yet.
Great point on Lei not having much to play for, I had not considered that.
What are the other option for that Vardy spot though? I don't fancy the Murray Barnes Ayew types.
Anyone else seems punty or a rotation risk?

There's a distinct lack of forward choices this sesason so that's why I'm opting for 5 strong midfielders. It's either go big with Lukaku and Firmino/Auba or go for Firm and Auba with a sub 7m pick like the aforementioned Murray Barnes or Ayew in my view.

I don't like the expensive or cheap option that's kinda why I ended up with Vardy.

      I would go
      Fab and VDH to
      Ryan and Fernandez.

VDH not nailed and you take away the risk of Swans double and get a double double keeper - even with horrible fixtures in the 2 possible dgws bit that might just be save points in the bag.

Just to take a break from all the wildcard talk, I can't wait for LIV-MCI and MCI-LIV in ChampsLeague.
2 great attacking teams to watch, one of which we'll unfortunately miss in the next round.
I think we'll be talking about these 2 matches until mid-July agreeing they offered the best spectacle, comparing them with the UCL semis, UCL final and WorldCup final.

Decided to take the punt on Mkhi and Murray for the next two, then use my 2FT on Son and Ayew for DGW34. I see the value in Son of course but 2 away games, one of which at Chelsea, versus 2 strong home games for Mkhi make it a gamble worth taking. Murray for even stronger reasons given Ayew’s ban. Obviously this locks in the transfers which is the major downside, but at this stage of the season you have to play the fixtures and Arsenal’s, well, let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth.

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 11 Years

You could even move Mkhi to Son 33, reduces Mkhi's rotation-risk around Moscow and gets Son for @sto, a fixture they always rack up goals in.

I think if you don't get hit by injuries etc this could be the best strategy.
If you FH 35 you can't roll the transfers anyway.
Why not plan and make the best of how the fixtures have fallen.

Another similar point is a decent exit strategy to get Kane in and my WC has not got a good one right now.
Getting him in for 34 would be difficult if he was back.
37 a little easier when we only need 11 or 12 decent ones.

However I probably don't want to have less than 8 potential double double players in my WC as that will just lead to pre 37 hits.
So for no way I am going Son despite the immediate fixtures but you make a good argument for Mkhi. Will think on.

In fact I'm now thinking Silva could be the one that makes way for Son - they have tough fixtures these next 3 GWs and I'll have the option of bringing him in for GW35 on the FH.

So midfield of Salah, Mahrez, Son, Mkhi and Kenedy (my team value is low).

Son and a City is a tough one. Immediate fixture about as bad as each other then they play each other in 34.
Son edges it with very nice 37 fixtures. Maybe best is neither til 34 at least and get another short term one with nice fixtures to go with Mkhi 🙂

    Lloris and Ryan combo, hmmm...

    - Good rotation till end
    - Wont have to use FT in GW36 to add a Spurs defender, will only have Kane to concentrate on

Lose Cech, get a double double like DDG?
Keep Fab or get Ryan - Ryan great 33
Dummett is okay for 32 but a BUR def is better
That front 8 is too heavy, reduce 1 and get Alonso

Wood will go criminally overlooked. People who are stretching for differentials to catch up to ML rivals are looking further away from the template than they need to.

Go Eriksen/Alli over Son, go Sane over Dilva, go Wood/Murray over Barnes, go Gross over Gundmunsson, Maguire over Morgan/Chilwell, Azpi over Alonso.

Sorry got my brain in the FH 35 zone.

But looking at your team this is viable.
The core is decent even Pritchard and Stanislas have the short term fixtures. The bench is weak so that BB 37 after WC could work better.
I would use FT for something like Coleman to Mustafi this week.

Also I dont have TC but if I did there is no stand out potential double game week fixture I would use it in. So 34 could be good. Maybe Kane TC 37 works very well too.
Good luck. Only downside might've rotation kicking in in 37 for BB.

Thanks bud. Tempted to keep coleman for his gw35 fixture. Have funds itb so maybe francis > mustafi? Arsenal rotation the only worry.

If you got the funds for sure that's a good move.
Not sure on TC but why not a diff see how he does over next few weeks I suppose.

Vdh and Chilwell unfortunately dictated by price

Ramsey is in because I fancy him to score a few and as arsenal have nothing to play for they're bound to start winning now

Wood looks dangerous every time I've seen him and if he's fit i just think he's a better option than Barnes.

I'm also chasing in my ml, and everyone else used there fh in 31 so they have to set up for double doubles and punt on 35, I can take some calculated risks as a result

Who is a certain starter apart from the GK? And maybe not even him. The CBs are uncertain when Jones is back. The LB is classified as a midfielder. Valencia probably but he's way over-priced. That's the problem I see there.

When Jones is back. That made me laugh. Glass players are never back. They play couple get broken and then come back leisurely. Smalling seems safe till dgw

Started 10 of the first 11 games this season. Then injured for 5 weeks. The started 10 of the next 11 games. Then injured, has missed three and is supposed to be back soon.

That doesn't match your complacent response, which sounds more like wishful thinking to me. The OP was concerned with the two DGWs and by then Jones is likely to be a factor.

He is supposed to be back soon for a month now. At this rate Smalling should get decent cleanies vs Swans WBA even Wham if they play well.

Nope. Lukaku is almost essential for first dgw. Plus he has beenbest manutd player along with matic in last 3

The first choice CB pairing could easily be rested for the midweek game in 34 as they face Spurs 3 days after that.

Thanks. Maybe keep it to a double so.
It not just the expense it's the risk of nailing 2 after DeGea
And it really would have to be the 2 CBs
As ye said one OOP and Valencia is just too expensive.

The problem with Jones is that he is unlikely to start 2 league games a week. Whilst he played every week in the PL this year whilst fit, wasn’t he was rested in the CL midweek games ?

The problem is that when he is fit you can't be sure of any United CB playing every game.

That is a second problem, a fully fit set of players that can play center back. It doesn’t bode well for Jones owners, or owners of the other Utd center backs.

That said, the rotation issue impinges upon many players from the top 6 who are involved in CL, FA Cup & CL qualification ... acceptance of rotation and decent playing bench is key at this time of year
