Having assessed our favoured goalkeepers in the newly-updated Watchlist rankings, we now turn our attention to the defenders who look best-placed to benefit from the remaining schedule.

For those unfamiliar, the Watchlist offers mid-term player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks and beyond. They can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

They give an indication of our thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Similar to the keepers, our focus is understandably aimed towards those with a pair of expected Double Gameweeks to come.

With that in mind, Marcos Alonso returns to the summit in light of his unrivalled potential for attacking points among defenders.

Without a goal since Gameweek 22, the wing-back has been subject to an exodus in recent weeks, yet he remains peerless when it comes to offering a goal threat from the back.

Boasting a share of set-piece duties, Alonso has scored more goals (six) than any defender, while his tally of 55 attempts is at least double all bar nearest rival Nicolas Otamendi’s 28.

Chelsea’s home encounter with Spurs means that some Wildcarders may wait until Gameweek 33, which hands him a home clash with West Ham prior to a pair of Gameweek 34 trips to Southampton and Burnley.

After the Gameweek 35 blank has passed, Alonso offers trips to Swansea and Newcastle of either side of a home match with Liverpool, though a visit from Huddersfield is expected to drop in along with the Reds’ encounter for Double Gameweek 37.

At 5.3 to Alonso’s 7.2, though, Andreas Christensen may yet come into consideration for some if he recovers from the knock that forced him out of the Denmark squad on Thursday. Christensen’s ongoing fragility is a concern, though, while Cesar Azpilicueta – at just 0.3 less than Alonso – struggles to compete.

Harry Maguire (5.6) is another who threatens those much-wanted 15-point returns. He also has a pair of Double Gameweeks to come, promoting his case for a berth in our five-man defences.

Although he’s failed to produced attacking returns since Gameweek 19, Maguire – who has two goals and four assists – is the leading defender for both shots (12) and efforts in the box (ten) over the last six rounds of fixtures.

Claude Puel’s side have admittedly struggled for resilience of late and are without a clean sheet in six, yet the next three Gameweeks (bha NEW bur & SOT) before their blank in 35, look encouraging for those keen to invest.

Furthermore, they then play Crystal Palace in Gameweek 36 and should have back-to-back home encounters with West Ham and Arsenal in Double Gameweek 37.

After sustaining a minor hamstring complaint against Holland on Friday night, reports have now suggested that Maguire is back in full training ahead of England’s clash with Italy.

That fine run-in could also promote Ben Chilwell (4.3) and Wes Morgan (4.4) as cheaper routes into the Foxes’ rearguard. Chilwell has started seven of the last eight Gameweeks, while captain Morgan has played the previous three since returning from injury. Both require consideration, though Maguire’s big-score potential may just warrant the extra outlay given the fixtures to come.

Chris Smalling and Jan Vertonghen offer secure routes into the Man United and Spurs defences respectively for their anticipated pair of Double Gameweeks.

United’s remaining schedule (SWA mci WBA & bou blank ARS bha WAT) pits them against just two of the current top nine, with a trip to West Ham expected to slot in alongside the visit to Brighton in Double Gameweek 37.

Smalling has started eight successive league matches and seems to have nailed a role on the teamsheet, scoring his second goal of the season as recently as Gameweek 29.

In all likelihood, though, David De Gea’s save-point potential will be a key factor for those eyeing up United’s defence. Smalling appears to offer the optimum route for those seeking to double on Mourinho’s rearguard, with Antonio Valencia (6.9) surely a stretch too far, even for Wildcard budgets.

Vertonghen, meanwhile, is arguably the one secure pick in the Spurs defence as a result of Mauricio Pochettino’s tendency to rotate his full-backs.

On the downside, the north London side face Chelsea and Man City in the next three Gameweeks, though the latter fixture is part of a Double Gameweek 34 that also involves a trip to Brighton.

With Stoke, Watford and Leicester still to face, as well as an expected Double Gameweek 37 against West Brom and Newcastle, we’ll be monitoring Ben Davies’ situation. An average of 5.2 points per match is more than any defender but faith in the Welshman took a dive after was rested for his side’s previous league match at Bournemouth.

Burnley’s Matt Lowton should earn plenty of interest from those with the Wildcard active either now, or in Gameweek 33.

Last Thursday’s fixture announcement means that the Clarets are the only team set to play five times (wba wat LEI CHE stk) in the next four Gameweeks.

This also coincides with another appearance for the club’s reserves by Tom Heaton, who will put pressure on Nick Pope for the keeper’s jersey.

Costing just 4.4, Lowton has supplied two assists in five appearances since returning from injury and has reclaimed the right-back berth from Phil Bardsley.

Sean Dyche’s side also have two strong home matches (BHA BOU) on either side of a Gameweek 37 trip to Arsenal.

After serving up a 12-point haul in a 3-0 home win over Watford in Arsenal’s previous league match, Shkodran Mustafi now has three goals in 20 league starts this season.

On the downside, that clean sheet against the Hornets was their first since Gameweek 18. However, in terms of the upcoming fixtures, there are plenty of positives for Arsene Wenger’s defence, who play just one of their top six rivals (STK SOT new WHU mun BUR hud) between now and the end of the season.

A trip to Leicester is also likely to drop into Double Gameweek 37 along with their home encounter against Burnley, meaning that Arsenal will be one of only five teams – along with Man City, Swansea, West Ham and Newcastle – who play in Gameweek 35 and also feature twice in the penultimate round of fixtures.

Further down our ladder, Adrian Mariappa, Mike van der Hoorn and Paul Dummett could be worth considering as sub-4.5 picks for our Wildcards with Gameweek 37 in mind.

Mariappa is devoid of a double but, at just 4.2, has four kind home matches remaining (BOU BUR CRY NEW) along with a trip to Huddersfield. The Hornets have conceded one goal in three under Javi Gracia at Vicarage Road.

Like Mustafi, Van der Hoorn (4.4) and Dummett (4.2) play in Gameweek 35 and are also anticipated to feature twice in Gameweek 37. Their upcoming schedules are somewhat mixed, though, so they will need rotation partners around the double-headers.

The options if you have all chips available....

    1) FFS popular strategy -- WC 32/33, BB 34, FH 35, TC 37

This requires wildcarding in a team that have doubles in both 34 and 37 (i.e. Brighton, Chelsea, Leicester, Man Utd, Southampton and Spurs). Kane is likely to be the candidate for TC in 37 and hence if unfit before 34 and isn't in our WC squads, would require one of the two FTs that will be available in 36 and 37.

    2) FFS alternative strategy -- WC 32/33, TC 34, FH 35, BB 37

As above but the switch in TC and BB order provides more opportunity to benefit from the larger DGW 37. The major concern with this is the rotation that is likely to occur in GW37 as the top of the premier league table may already have been decided.

    3) The alternative strategy -- FH 34, TC 35/38, WC 36, BB 37

This requires building a squad now that will be successful in the blank week 35 (e.g. Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Burnley). And would mean loading up on City, United and Spurs in the WC in week 36 (as all have favourable doubles in 37). This strategy means not being able to play the TC on a double gameweek (unless the fixture announcements to come are not all played in 37).

    4) Off the wall strategy -- FH 34, WC 35, BB 37, TC 38

The WC here requires gearing up for blank 35 (perhaps having a playing squad of 11 - principally Man City and Arsenal) whilst keeping an eye on the DGW 37 (perhaps 4 players from Man Utd and Spurs). Here the TC is used on the typically high scoring final week but does not have the benefit of using on a double.

Am I missing any other strategies? And which one do you think is best?

If your well set for DGW34 then the following is worth considering.

      TC GW34, FH GW35, WC GW35, BB GW37.

You only need to find four bench players with something to play for - a CL spot, a Europa spot, avoiding relegation - in GW37 for the bench boost to be effective. I think people get carried away with the idea of getting out 15 DGW players, but only four matter.

Someone on here (can't remember who) was WCing this week for a BB in 37 and using his FH in 34.
      So I think it was:

WC 32, FH 34, BB 37, TC ??(in a single game week)

Just read your comment - like it a lot.

Lots of options out there....and the laziness in me is driving me towards wildcarding for the doubles (hit lots of Chelsea, Leicester, Man Utd and Spurs) and free hit in GW35.

Would definitely appreciate an article that pulls together the likely outcome from each of the different strategies!!

    DDG
    Daniels Scheletto Lowton
Dilva Mahrez Salah (VC) Son Willian
    Aubameyang (©) Firmino

    Subs: Ryan,Barnes,VDH & Morgan

0.5 ITB to do Auba & Firmino > Lukaku & Vardy DGW 34 which gives me 12 DGW'ers and 3 SGW's for GW 34 will also be bench boosting

Fixtures not too good for Ota; but then, contemplated selling few weeks back when he had Ars, CHE, stk but resisted that temptation. My faith paid off with clean sheet in all 3 fixtures.
I have both now, and wouldn't be selling Ota. Maybe b'cos I'm not on wildcard and have plenty of garbage in my team to get rid of.

Which 2 would you choose to bring in on WC for weeks 32-35. As I have no FH they all play same number of games- 4.

Based on fixtures Robertson and Monreal appear to have kinder fixtures and will Smalling play both games in week 34 anyway with FA cup (would mean game on 15, 18 and 21 April). Of course there is risk of Robertson being rested I guess for Everton game in week 33 which falls between 2 CL games, Monreal around EL games so potentially in week 34 and Davies around FA cup although less so I believe as Danny Rose can play FA Cup

From this, and taking account of fixtures and no FH I am thinking that Robertson Monreal best combo but would welcome views from others? Spurs have 2 hard fixtures in there making clean sheets less likely.

    A Robertson (cpa-32), (eve-33), (BOU-34) and (wba-35)
    B Monreal (STO-32), (SOU-33), (new-34) and (WHU-35)
    C Smalling (SWA-32), (mcy-33), WBA,bou-34) and (blank-35)
    D Davies/Vertonghen (chelsea-32), (WHU-33), MCY,bha-34), and (blank-35)

I am going Smalling and Mustafi. Mustafi seems to have played even after Europa League games, whereas Monreal hasnt. Plus Monreal injury prone. Spurs full backs will be rotation and I don't fancy their fixtures for clean sheets. Robertson will miss Everton game and only 1 game in gw34.

I just think that if you are going to use BB, you should maximise your your team to get all 15 players to have DGW. Normally we are using the popular 3-4-3 line up for normal game week. That leaves us 4 cheap players on the bench which normally includes 1 GK, 2 defenders and 1 midfield player.

If all of these players concede once and blank, so you could only have 2 pts for GK, 4 pts for Def and 2 pts for the Mid times 2 fixtures. The total pts are only around 16 points.

If you are using BB for GW34, who would be your bench players? And if you don't have FH for GW35, you will only have 3 players from Burnley to bring into that game week. If you have City, Liverpool & Arsenal players for GW34, then you are not maximising your BB. If you don't have FH anymore, then it's better to use BB on GW37. But the lure for TC Kane on gw37 is hard to ignore. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, that's what I think. Most team will carry at least Salah and Auba. So, you wont have a maximum number of players for BB. So, if you don't have FH anymore, go for a balance squad (have good players for 35) on 34 and use TC on 34. Don't focus to get as many players that play twice on 34

I have no free hit and have tried tc in gw 34 and bb in gw34. I am now going bb in gw34. Will have Barnes, Mustafi, Lowton and Karius as overcards. Think bb is hugely overrated as your 4 extra players are all cheap players, esp. the defenders. I am playing tc in gw37 as I may leave Salah on the bench for match against Chelsea and just concentrate on the 11 best dbgwers for that week. Tried messing around the other way and taking too many hits. The schedulers bowled no fh chip players with the biggest possible googly. Looking to tc Kane in gw37

      1. alifzuhdi
        • 9 Years

I'm also thinking to BB34 & TC37 but with no FH, it's a bit harder to get better squad on 35. So, I think I need to bring as many FTs up until GW37 to have a full 15 dgw players on dgw37. From now until gw37, I will have 5 FTs to carry on.

      Exactly why I'm FH34.

If you look at the fixtures 32-37 and blank-out 34, there is a clear path between now and the end of the season.

Over-investing in dgw34 for the sake of a mediocre bench boost over serves to compromise our squads - for the sake of maybe 15-20 bench boost points.

Any thoughts on how I could improve this WC team? Still have BB and TC chips left:

    De Gea - Ryan
    Valencia - Mustafi - Lowton - Fernandez - Mariappa
    Salah - Son - Mahrez - Willian - Ki
    Auba - Lukaku - Barnes

TC on 34 and BB on 37. So, replace ryan with fab so u will have keeper on 35. Ki to milo or gudmunsson for better chance on gw35.

As a Man United fan I think Baily is the more secure way to United defence after De Gea and Valencia. Rojo is back Lindelof also is there Jones will be back and they will all rotate with Smalling IMO. Thoughts?

      You're probably right.
Most of us are gambling on one of smalling/jones being the other cb for 34. Hopefully we'll know more before then

Smalling is nailed. The others will have to fight for the remaining spot! Baily was eased in after his recovery and that didn't affect Smalling game time one bit. Jones, if he finally recovers, will have to be eased in; probably via FA cup.

What's United's first choice CB pairing when everyone is fit?

Baily and all others rotate. My bet is Jones for this season

If at full fitness etc I would say Bailey and Jones

I think Smalling has cemented his place. Mourinho normally quite consistent with his defence. Jones had a mare at Spurs and Newcastle.

Smalling and one of Baily/Jones. Smalling is as good as nailed.

I'm an advocate of Morgan over Maguire. That extra 1mil could go a long way for you. Maybe use it to upgrade one of Stephens/Lowton/Dunk to Smalling/Mustafi

WC team. Chips intact. 0 in the bank! Any feedback or suggestions with my limited budget?

    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Mustafi Lowton Morgan Chilwell
    Salah Mahrez Son Willian Kenedy
    Lukaku Aubameyang Barnes

Morgan + Chilwell is an overkill and one of them is occupying a Leicester spot that may be needed to get in Vardy if needed in the near future.

    Good WC plan?

    De Gea Ryan
    Alonso Baily Morgan Lowton Tark

    Auba Murray Vardy

    GW 34 Mikhi to Son
    GW 34 Auba to Kaku
    and BB
    GW 35 FH
    GW 36 Kaku to Kane
    GW37 Murray to Ayew
    TC Kane

Probably Richarlison out. Terrible form. Isit 6.4itb plus the player out? And what’s your current midfield

      1. #FPLBhuna
        • 9 Years

        yes pal

        Currently look like this

        Lloris
        Robertson - Maguire - Smalling
        Salah - Mahrez - Richarlison - Zaha
        Firmin - Vardy - King
Bench: Elliot - Mili - Keane - Kenny

I've got no TC or FH so I am going to take hits between now and 34 to field hopefully 10/11 dgw players. Then plan to WC in 35 and BB in 37.

Zaha and King are yellow flagged so I'll wait on news on them two before I make the transfer. I was leaning towards King > Lukaku as he's my priority for dgw 34 but I could wait I suppose.

Yeah I feel your pain mate. I only have BB left to play so gonna take lots of hits and have some fun with it.

I’d be tempted by Mkhi for Richarlison but like you said wait to see if King/Zaha are out

Yeah Mkhi is a shout too but I feel he blows too hot and cold and the fact he don't have a dgw 34 makes me want to stay away from him now. I'll probably bring him in on a GW35 though now as he plays and will have a dgw37. Likewise with Auba. And likewise with taking hits and having some fun with it - same really. Seasons been poor for me so I've little to lose now.

I'd do Richarlison to Mahrez or Son if you don't have them already.

have Mahrez pal but not Son - however i won't be getting Son out for a -4 v Chelsea away this week

Understandable. He is playing as striker though and you'll probably want him for Stoke the week after.

Another option could be Richarlison to Gross or Gudmundsson.

I asked this question yesterday but looking for a few more responses from different people if possible.

For gw34 who would you play?

    A. Sane
    B. Barnes

    Cheers

I can see both sides to the argument tbf, I'd still go Barnes though

180 minutes chance of an attacking return v 2 teams that are less defensively sound than Spurs imo.

Bench three while playing at least 2 defenders:
    (A) Willian (TOT)
    (B) Alonso (TOT)
    (C) Son (che)
    (D) Barnes (wba)
    (E) Gross (LEI)
    (F) Chilwell (bha)
    (G) Morgan (bha)
    (H) Lowton (wba)
