In tonight’s article, we present some metrics on the different strategies and picks found among the top 10,0000 managers in Fantasy Premier League ahead of Double Gameweek 34.

As discussed in my midweek piece, the top 10k were expected to own an average of 9.08 double players ahead of Saturday’s deadline once their free transfers were used. Indeed, having looked at the final data, we now find that the average was raised to 9.45 players with two fixtures once transfer hits had been made.

Indeed, the average deducted points for hits is higher than normal, with the average transfer cost standing at -2.28 points, with Double Gameweek assets justifying the extra outlay.

The full distribution of double players number for the top 10k is shown below

members

We see that 53% of the top 10k managers achieved a number between 7-10 Double Gameweek players, while around only third of managers got at least 11.

Of course, this number is a big factor when it comes to the choice of the chip activated.

Here are the percentage of chips used among the top 10k managers for Gameweek 34.

Chip Percentage
Wildcard 4.36%
Triple Captain 18.23%
Free Hit 4.34%
Bench Boost 34.79%

Following this latest update, the total usage of chips in the top 10k increased as follows.

members

Although 34.8% activated the Bench Boost chip this week, there are still around 48% of managers in the top 10k who have kept it in reserve, while there are more than 52% Triple Captains still intact. In both cases, we are likely to see these played over the Gameweek 37 doubles.

Now let’s put those managers with chips active under more scrutiny.

For the 18.23% who used the Triple Captain, we see that Romelu Lukaku seems to be the most popular choice (8.73%) while Harry Kane comes in second (4.79%). Meanwhile, only 1.8% triple captained Alexis Sanchez as he continues to shape up as a potentially powerful differential.

Triple Captained Player Percentage
Romelu Lukaku 8.73%
Harry Kane 4.79%
Alexis Sánchez 1.80%
Jamie Vardy 0.85%
Riyad Mahrez 0.50%
Eden Hazard 0.32%
Paul Pogba 0.27%
Mohamed Salah 0.20%

Now we shift gears to the most used chip this week, the Bench Boost.

Below is the template team made up of the most selected by those managers with that chip active in the top 10k.

members

The average Bench Boost manager has chosen to keep trust in three single fixture players. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Luka Milivojevic – who certainly justified that faith.

This line-up highlights the ownership of players but doesn’t really tell us the make-up of the typical bench.

To gain more insight on that, I checked the four cheapest players in every Bench Boost squad and assumed these would constitute the bench in a regular Gameweek.

The following table shows the most selected bench players for those with the Bench Boost active.

Bench Player for Bench Boosters Percentage
Matt Lowton 33.46%
Wes Morgan 22.25%
Ben Chilwell 21.82%
Mathew Ryan 17.30%
Kevin Long 14.83%
Rob Elliot 13.88%
James Tarkowski 11.10%
Nick Pope 9.46%

We see that the most common bench is: Matt Lowton, Wes Morgan, Ben Chilwell and Matthew Ryan, with Kevin Long, James Tarkowski and Nick Pope also proving key targets.

In summary, Bench Boosters are relying heavily on the Burnley and Leicester defences to provide them with the extra points. Unfortunately, the two sides met at Turf Moor today, and neither came out of the fixture with a clean sheet. Both are at home in midweek, however.

Now, we look at another chip activated by just 4.34% of top 10k managers this week, the Free Hit.

With the chip active, we could reasonably expect that managers would load up on Double Gameweek players, selecting the cheapest bench options possible.

Indeed the template selection confirms this, with heavy hitters like Lukaku, Sanchez, Kane, Christian Eriksen and Salah all proving the go-to options.

members

Free Hit managers have a strong line-up for Gameweek 34, then, but will likely struggle with the Gameweek 35 blanks to come.

Having covered chip use, let’s go back to the player selection statistics for all the top 10k managers.

One key question we had in mind is what forwards should we own for the Double Gameweek?

Managers had to decide how to combine the likes of Kane, Lukaku and Jamie Vardy or simply opt for all three.

Below I have calculated the combination percentages.

Forwards Combination Percentage
Kane + Vardy 15.49%
Lukaku + Vardy 15.01%
Vardy Only 15.01%
Kane + Lukaku 13.93%
Kane Only 11.89%
Lukaku Only 11.53%
Kane + Lukaku + Vardy 7.49%

Vardy seems to be the common factor in all the most popular selections. There are even more teams with only Vardy of the three, than with Kane and Lukaku or any of them alone.

However, for captaincy selection, Vardy ranks third, with fierce competition between Lukaku and Kane.

members

Another burning question was whether to keep or sell Salah. From the metrics in the top 10k, it looks as though the majority of managers chose to retain the Egyptian after his Champions League heroics.

Salah’s ownership dropped slightly from 81.2% last week to 76.6%, so only 4.6% of the top 10k managers moved him out.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a table of players with the most ownership in the top 10k and their effective ownership this week.

Note that ownership includes managers who benched the player this week, while effective ownership includes only starting players with their captaincy statistics included.

Player Top 10k Ownership Top 10k Effective Ownership
Mohamed Salah 76.63% 82.20%
David de Gea 60.76% 61.30%

Given the potential Liverpool rotation it is SO convenient they play first next week, meaning the leaked line up will be invaluable

One dumb FH question before I activate to check my understanding and I promise that's it.

I bought smalling at 5.4 and he could rise to 5.6 tonight.

If I sell tonight I only get 5.4 sv but by holding off till tomorrow I get the 5.5 for a replacement yes?

And as in wildcard I cannot undo the change to get the 5.5 anyhow if i sold today?

      Exactly as you thought.

I was wondering the same earlier.

I'm waiting until tomorrow and hoping for a few rises before cashing in.

Someone (think FPL Virgin) suggested you simply imagine you aren't playing the chip until the last minute. The transfers and price rises then work exactly as normal.

How much extra do you guys think you gain from playing bench boost in a double gameweek rather than a single game week?

Let's take 20 points as a good BB score. That's, what, 15 points more than you might get in a single gameweek? Maybe less than that?

Today I've been thinking about what we sacrifice for that fifteen point gain, particularly in light of something Jonty said on the scoutcast midweek. He suggested that were he wildcarding now he would have Sanchez in his side rather than Lukaku. Clearly to his mind that would be a better pick and it (maybe along with a few other tweeks) would leave him with what he would consider a better wildcard with maybe a different captain too. Potentially quite a significant change.

He could in fact have had that better wildcard, if he hadn't compromised it by playing it two weeks early just so he could play the BB in GW34. How many of those fifteen points might he gain back with what he would consider a better team this week?

Beyond that, he and many others essentially played GW32 and GW33 with a team that was primarily designed for DGW34 rather than the gameweeks at hand. How many more of those fifteen points could he have gained if he had played those gameweeks for what they were, content in the knowledge that a DGW34 wildcard was coming up?

I suspect that more often then not he (and many others) would end up profiting by delaying the wildcard until 34 without the bench boost. Especially given the potential for nightmare injuries and suspensions to cripple a wildcard team in those two weeks anyway.

So basically, maybe this whole DGW bench boost thing is the wrong approach? Maybe we should be willing to accept a minimised SGW bench boost in the knowledge that we'll have a more informed and flexible DGW wildcard?

Possibly. There's a lot of luck involved.

That long goal has meant I have 15 so far where otherwise I would have been rubbish.

I have had low bench scores generally this season whereas last season I kept getting keeper rotation wrong and hit 20 in at least one sgw.

I agree with what you're saying, except you missed out one significant factor. The reason people were desperate to play WC in 32 over 33 is because their teams were so bad from 31, so if they had kept that team two weeks longer they would have lost tons of points as well. Regardless, with my WC33 my team looked great on paper, just didn't score any points, so it's not like I would have changed much if I could have.

Aye that's a good point I hadn't considered, though personally I was quite happy with my post 31 wildcard team. Still, they would have had fts to address the situation and hits if necessary. I mean a lot of GW32 wildcarders (including Mark I think?) ended up taking hits between 32 and 34 anyway.

      Nice read, really well written.

You only had to be on here before the gameweek deadline to see the clamber for DGW players. There's the clear temptation to sell SGW players even when they have a decent fixture or are in form.

I think this was an excellent DGW to BB as we had SGW we could hold on to, like TAA, Robertson, Salah, Firmino, Mané, Zaha, Milivoyevic. It's when SGW players don't have a good fixture but haul, that's the frustration.

        Thanks!

See I made the seperate error of focusing solely on DGW players for my bench boost and this has perhaps unfairly put me off the idea of bench boosting in DGWs altogether.

Looking at my not particularly outlandish bench of Ryan, Ibe, Lowton and Duffy I see six points gained with TOT, MUN, CHE and TOT to come. For this I risked hindering my wildcard? I think I'll approach it differently next year.

The biggest thing for me is people avoiding Mahrez, Eriksen and Alli's hauls leading up to GW31. There were a lot of points dropped by restricting your transfers to players than only played in GW31, then wildcarding after.

The wildcard compounded the problem as it meant some lost SGW assets such as Liverpool players because they wanted players that have 3 games in 7 days (when you consider the FA Cup Semi).

It's playing the percentages rather than playing the form and fixtures.

I've benched boosted this week with Ayew and Fernandez only playing once. It's blown out of all proportion around here. People have benched with Dunk and Ryan on them and they think it's the optimal way to play BB chip

To me it just comes down to the basics. You can put out 11 players each week, normally playing 11 games. With a DGW and BB, you're putting out 15 players with potentially 30 games.

Of course there will be rotation and single GW players that do well, but in its simplest terms- you have the biggest ticket you can in the biggest lottery.

Btw I spread the funds, if you have players like Kane and Lukaku then it becomes very questionable of course:

        De Gea Ryan
        Bailly Smalling Long Lowton Morgan
        Eriksen Son Alli Mahrez Hazard
        Wood Austin Vardy

Fairly happy so far but a Lukaku blank and Man U clean sheet would cement it.

I posted something along these lines recently: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/17885035

The gist of it is that maybe the best strategy for BB is to play it in the Gameweek with the most points potential for all 8 of your attackers (so you don't have to bench any of them)

Any reason not to do mee --> long just now to avoid the Mee price fall and long price rise?

But what? If long gets injured as TM says, you'll have to make another transfer. At this stage of the season, losing 0.1m on Ben Mee is not gonna be season defining. Just wait. Maybe a better option will arise

Yeah but you'll lose a transfer or 4 points. Game isn't about money.

It's gw34. TV building stage of the season is over my friend. Now it's about points. Waiting for information is the best way to secure and guarantee points. Not taking risks based on players' value when the potential reward will probably not be utilized.

You asked for a reason. You've got some good answers. By the sounds of it you were looking for someone to say 'do it' so by all means, go ahead and make the transfer. If Long gets injured and you're annoyed about it, you always have hindsight to look back on.

Yeah essentially, I for example have Willian, Lukaku and Barnes all going up in theory tonight so will wait until morning and have an extra 0.3 to spend on fh team as it will be a double rise since I bought them.
