After checking out the machinations behind the Free Hit chip ahead of Gameweek 35, we now delve a little deeper into the approaches open to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers for the reduced slate of fixtures.

First, a reminder that, with the FA Cup semi-finals taking place this weekend, we are limited to the following fixtures:

Gameweek 35 Schedule

West Brom vs Liverpool
Watford vs Crystal Palace
Arsenal vs West Ham
Stoke vs Burnley
Man City vs Swansea
Everton vs Newcastle

As discussed in our previous article, many managers had therefore pinpointed this Gameweek as the best time to play their Free Hit chip.

This tactic involved Wildcarding in either Gameweek 32 or 33 to load up on the sides who play twice in both Double Gameweek 34 and 37.

That affords the freedom to freshen up their squads temporarily to take advantage of this weekend’s reduced slate.

However, we are also aware that, by this point, other FPL managers may have already wielded their Free Hit chip and we have therefore factored that into our thinking when considering the strategies available.

In the first of two further articles, we look at the targets in defence, both for those with and without their Free Hit chips.

The Free Hit Chip Targets

The Free Hit chip already gives Fantasy managers a distinct advantage for Gameweek 35 given that they have total freedom with unlimited transfers right up until the deadline.

But those with the chip active can also seek to maximise this scenario by pinpointing players with very favourable weekend fixtures who are likely to be ignored by non-Free Hit chip rivals.

With five of the 12 teams to feature in this weekend’s slate set to play twice in Double Gameweek 37 – Arsenal, Man City, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham – those without Free Hit chips can focus extra trades on form players who they expect will start three matches over those Gameweeks. In doing so, they can spend points on transfers in the hope that the extra fixture will help repay the investment.

Obviously, there will be some crossover in terms of targets for the Free Hit manager and the “chipless”.

Taking Man City as an example, the likes of Nicolas Otamendi and Kyle Walker may well be named on Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet from this point onwards, starting with a very favourable home encounter with travel-sick Swansea.

Both offer considerable attacking upside as routes into the league’s most resilient rearguard – only Marcos Alonso has scored more goals than Otamendi’s four, while Walker’s tally of six assists is just one off the summit for defenders.

Similarly, for Arsenal, Shkodran Mustafi remains seemingly immune to rotation at a time when Arsene Wenger has swapped his full-backs due to their ongoing Europa League campaign. The German international has played all but 18 minutes from Gameweek 20 onwards and has chipped in with three goals and an assist ahead of a visit from West Ham.

Arguably, though, outwith that trio, the appeal of most defenders with considerable upside in Gameweek 35 will mainly be exclusive to those with the Free Hit at their disposal.

Man City captain Vincent Kompany is expected to start Sunday’s title party at home to the Swans but, given his injury history, Pep Guardiola could well manage the Belgian’s minutes over their subsequent four league fixtures. Kompany has a goal, an assist and two clean sheets in his last five league outings.

Rested for last week’s loss to Newcastle, Hector Bellerin is another short-term option who looks likely to start Gameweek 35 but not necessarily every league fixture that follows. A total of two first-team outings in the previous five league matches is likely to deter those without Free Hit chips from taking a punt on the Gunners’ right-back.

Elsewhere, teams without a Double Gameweek 37 are the ones most likely to be overlooked by non-Free Hit chip managers.

With that in mind, the likes of Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Burnley can offer in-form solutions across the positions for those set to play their Free Hit chip.

Priced at just 4.0, Kevin Long benefitted from Ben Mee’s absence to claim a double-digit haul in the first of the Clarets’ two Double Gameweek 34 matches. Ragnar Klavan is likely to come in for Liverpool’s trip to West Brom given that Dejan Lovren is a minor doubt for next midweek’s Champions League encounter with Roma.

The Reds have conceded five times in their last 12 in all competitions, which could also promote Loris Karius and Virgil van Dijk in some managers’ Free Hit plans if Jurgen Klopp shuffles his full-backs. The Dutchman offers a goal threat to increase his points ceiling and, given Lovren’s fitness issues, may well start at The Hawthorns.

Elsewhere, Stoke’s Jack Butland is the number one keeper for saves (102) and BPS points (419) since Gameweek 15. That suggests save points will be on the menu at least for the visit of in-form Burnley and, if the Potters can earn a shut-out, Butland’s potential points may even push double-figures. Along with Everton’s Jordan Pickford (4.9), he arguably has the highest points ceiling of any Gameweek 35 active goalkeeper.

Toffees left-back Leighton Baines is another target likely to be the exclusive of Free Hit managers. He has 19 points in his three home matches since returning from injury in Gameweek 30 ahead of a visit from Newcastle.

Similarly, Patrick van Aanholt has the attacking threat to reward short-term investment. Palace go to Watford in Gameweek 35 but, like Everton, do not offer a double to come, which could see the Dutchman largely ignored by those without the Free Hit active. Over his last six matches, Van Aanholt has scored twice and fired eight attempts on goal, with five shots on target – more than any defender.

The Non-Free Hit Targets

As mentioned above, players such as Otamendi, Walker and Mustafi will appeal to managers regardless of the Free Hit being active.

Crucially for those without the chip, both Man City (SWA whu HU & BHA sot) and Arsenal (WHU mun BUR & lei hud) are ranked as the top two defences for points potential in our season ticker. This boosts the chances of gaining a refund on any transfer “hits” taken to acquire them.

Investment in the other three teams with a Gameweek 35 and Double Gameweek 37 – Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham – has less immediate appeal, with all set to hit the road this weekend.

Of those three, the Magpies’ remaining schedule (eve WBA wat & tot CHE) is rated as the most favourable and fourth overall defensively.

Away to Everton on Monday night, Jamaal Lascelles has found the net three times this term and is their likeliest source of points from the back. At 4.2 to the centre-half’s 4.8, though, Paul Dummett is the cheaper option.

Lukasz Fabianski (4.7) is sure to deliver save points at least for Sunday’s trip to the Etihad and will then offer three home matches (CHE bou & SOT STK) in the final three Gameweeks.

If you’re not in the market for a keeper, though, at 5.1, Alfie Mawson (two goals and an assist) is the attacking option in defence, with Federico Fernandez (4.5) the budget-friendly pick.

West Ham’s remaining schedule (ars MCI lei & MUN EVE) hardly looks conducive to clean sheets.

But Angelo Ogbonna (4.2) could appeal as a squad filler, particularly for those with a Bench Boost chip planned for Double Gameweek 37. Meanwhile, Aaron Creswell (4.9) is the luxury item in David Moyes’ backline, having produced seven assists over the season, a tally matched only by Ben Davies among defenders.

In the final part of this series, we will move to assess the attacking options appealing ahead of Gameweek 35, again attempting to cater for both Free Hit managers and those using transfer hits to reinforce their squads.

Need some help on me WC fellas...

    A) Sane + Pèrez
    B) Jesus + Kenedy.

      B)

Jesus far more nailed at the moment (not quite 100%, but morenailed as any City striker has ever been!). Plus Kennedy is a better option than Perez imo. More creative

Thanks, i'd have a monster front 3 of Kane, Auba and Jesus this way.

Having my best season ever this year, upto 2076 OR. Need to finish with a bang.

That's what I will have from GW36 (Firmino over Kane for 35).

Great season. I'm now inside the top 20k for the first time in ten seasons. GL to you

Firm over Kane is an option I need to consider, but uses a FT... Aiming for 15 DGWers in 37 with BB.

Thanks mate, best of luck to you too!

Yeah, have a look at how you shape up for this week and see if it's worth the FT/-4 next week. If Firmino starts, I would back him to score more than four points, so would cancel out the hit if you only had ten starters (which would be odd on WC haha).

I am on BB this week, looks like you could have done with doing the same *doh*

Haha yeah the hit would be in the future to field 15, but I could just keep Salah + 14. Feel like Eriksen is a must though.

How did your BB go this week? It's been a pretty bad GW so far for most right? I had Kane TC....

I was flying after Sunday, with 67 points and 9 effective players still to play. But the Alonso ban and Kane returning last night has dented the progress. Still, pretty happy with the work (Lukaku return later would be helpful).

Also FYI, The team you have linked has Lukaku as TC and about 30 points on its bench 😉

                    Should be fixed now?

Lukaku, could do some damage, but i'm not convinced by United in the slightest. How many you got left to play now then?

Haha that team now looks much better!!

I have seven to play now, but other than Lu(k)aku and Willian (resting risk), they are the Saints keeper, double Burnley defence and Chilwell.

I would be happy for Lukaku to match Kane's return for the week to be honest. It was an either/or for the last three weeks (WC ahead of GW32) and he's currently one point behind Kane for that period. Was always getting shipped for Kane in GW36. If he can get me five tonight, it covers the cost of the hit to make the change haha

I'd be most confident in your Burnley defence in points from that lot. Chelsea look awful!

Lukaku against Bournemouth should get you a goal.

Alonso, Willian and Lukaku to Otamendi, Mili and Jesus (-4) seem ok?

Will mean I have 12 with a fixture this week, can afford Firmino to Kane next week if leaked team news is that Bobby doesn't start v Stoke and have 9/10 DGW players for GW37 (with Jesus and Kane TC options).

    Thoughts welcome

Wait wait wait - i did not hit the FH button yet, but hitting it is actually wasting your FT isnt it? Should we not use our FT first for a player we want for 36 and onwards, and after that use the FH chip for the team for GW35?

    6. JohnnyMagrinho
      8 years, 3 months ago

I know you've already had a really helpful reply but I'll try to expand on that a bit for you...

      A,C,B.

Mahrez is most nailed out of all three. There's no way he's going to play less minutes than either Willian or Son. Plus, he's usually central to whatever Leicester create. I'd try to ignore Leicester's shaky form of later and trust he can turn up when it matters.

Son isn't going to be benched all the time, but he wont start every game either. Now, he has been lethal this year from being brought on and playing cameos. He's good at making it count when it matters. But both Lamela and Lucas are getting more and more minutes and if Spurs get to the Final of the FA Cup, and continue to wobble in the Prem, I wouldn't like to rely on him or any Spurs midfielder other than Eriksen to supply the goods.

Willian is a great player in a poor team. I think his main points come from assists (6 goals and 8 assists) and that means he's relying more on team mates to put away their chances rather than him scoring. Yes Chelsea did do well to get 3 against Southampton but I don't think they're guaranteed anything from their remaining games.

That's my input anyway. Just think Mahrez is the safer bet and more likely to be in a position to get you more points than any of the other two.

Thanks for the thorough reply mate, I agree on terms of minutes Mahrez is the one. Fingers crossed he can pull his finger out, Vardy must have sore shoulders given his form the last few weeks!

      4. Markus
        • 16 Years

I agree with all the above. I think the final piece I'd just throw in is value - Leicester are playing like a 15th/16th place side at the moment really (not just unlucky form, but lack of motivation/team cohesion etc) so Mahrez is really more like a Gross at the moment, which as showed this week will still get you points but I personally think unlikely to score really massively (could and hopefully wrong after Southampton). So at least as good as willian probably but nearly 2m more, so just depends if you can put that money to better use elsewhere.

I will probably hang on to all 3 as will cost points hits, but if I was losing 1 in would probably be Mahrez to sterling as I think he is the prime midfield asset for the run in

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
          8 years, 3 months ago

That is a good point and something I should have mentioned you're right.

It does depend on what the rest of your team looks like and how much money you have and what cover you have from certain teams.

I'm just very wary of being suckered in by Willian's price because I think I'd rather have Arnautovic or Shaqiri if I was going that low - even Zaha.

Tokara makes a good point about Giroud too - he's potentially key to Willian's success. I just can't even begin to pretend I know enough about the Chelsea setup to advise on whether Giroud would start. Conte could easily pack the midfield and throw Hazard up front and leave Morata and Giroud on the bench for all I know.

I'd love to get Son in - love the guy think he's massively underrated but that would screw with my anxiety far too much!

Saying that, I brought Alli in for his assured starts and yeah, that really hasn't worked this week at all.

I get what you're saying but he's scored 11 and set up 10 so far this season.

He's the 5th highest scoring midfielder in the game behind Salah, Sterling, De Bruyne and Eriksen. That's quite some company.

I don't think Leicester will carry on being atrocious for much longer. He's allowed to blank every now and then because he's already got 5 double figure hauls and there's not many midfielders that can often you a regular return of points for similar price other than Sterling.

If we're talking about Sterling or Mahrez I'd say Sterling is a better choice but that's a different conversation.

Jose seemed incensed with the amount of silly flicks and taps. Seeing as he hardly even got given the ball I'm hoping he's not on that list.

Why not? Sure, we’ll see some appearances for Foden and Mendy, but on the whole they’ll want to keep winning

Including Mendy with Foden lik he's a kid in his breakthrough season and not an international footballer haha

    2. JohnnyMagrinho

I'd be wary of Silva not playing. Think he's going to be given some time off to spend with his family all things considering.

As Aguero is going to be out pretty much until the end of the season Jesus will be up top for sure. Good for him to get more minutes and he's going to be sweating to prove himself.

I genuinely think Pep wants to break as many records as possible. He'll want to get 100 points or as close as possible. I can see them not letting up and wanting to end on a massive, massive high.

I think defense is the main iffy area - Kompany/Otamendi/Laporte can be utilised in the centre and of course Pep has Walker/Danilo/Zinchenko and Delph for full back positions (along with Laporte at LB). I'm not confident in picking any defender from them to be honest.

Can't see KDB being rested though, and if Silva is given time off like we think then surely that means more time for Sterling. Gundogan looks likely to carry on in Fernandinhos absence but will probably be dropped after his ban.

Also I'm not too sure about the medals either. I was thinking the other day, will Bravo get some game time so he gets a medal? Not sure whether Pep would do that.

I think most changes will be made in defense rather than midfield or attack.

The club are given 40 medals

Five appearances equals a medal (guaranteed)
Fewer than five appearances and it is at the club's discretion

        2. JohnnyMagrinho
          8 years, 3 months ago

Ah OK wasn't too sure. I know there was some chat about it earlier in the week just didn't know the ins and outs.

Would be interesting to see if Pep does give Bravo some game time just because.

Wouldn't be surprised if we get a few cameos from some players but shouldn't be anything too disruptive for FPL I don't think.

With Mendy back and all 4CBs available, I expect him to try 3-5-2 (as in the beginning of the season) at some point in the run in because their system is well known any more and Pep may want to build a good Plan B for the next season. So I expect him not to rotate heavily but to try this new system with a line up like this:

      Ederson
      Otamendi Stones Laporte
      Walker Mendy
      Fernandinho
      Silva KDB
      Sterling Jesus

3 game ban but his ban only really affects 1 FPL GW that you have control of:

      1) burnley - middle of a DGW, you can't do anything about this
      2) Southampton - FA Cup
      3) Swansea - will miss this FPL game.

So he's avaialable for the DGW 37.

If you can cover him in that Swansea game it's not too bad.

I haven't thought it through, completely, but I think there is merit in retaining 2 FT the week after a FH if you had 2 FT going into the week. If your team remains the same as it was previously, and the value of those players moves (as if you haven't made any changes), then the entire concept of the free hit should be as if you've done absolutely nothing to your team - as if your team had simply got the week off.

The difference between playing FH this week and building a team with XI guys with a fixture this week:

If you are on FH, you can react to Salah/Firmino etc not making the starting team v WBA but will have to make transfers next week and the week after to get in Jesus/Sterling/Sane etc for City's run in.

If you are using transfers to get a team out this week, you (probably) have to gamble on Firmino and Salah starting (as you likely already have them). If they don't you aren't going to take a -4 on Friday night to replace them. But the Lukaku/Kane to Jesus transfer is still there next week. And you can have three city players for their run in without taking a hit.

On the balance, I think FH edges it, but not by more than a handful of points (and not if Firmino and Salah start)

Very average WC33 and BB34. How about the FH35 (25pts off ML leader, who has no FH):

    Butland
    OTAMENDI Tarkowski Baines (Long)
    Mane Salah Sterling Zaha (Mili)
    Firmino Jesus Aubameyang

Hoping for Pool team news as they KO at 12:30, and will reassess:

Mane > Unlikely all 3 miss out
    Salah > KDB/Sane
Firmino > Wood (play Wood or play Mili)
    Otamendi > Robertson/TAA

    Any thoughts would be super...

If he’s confirmed to be starting by Anfield express, he seems like the best defensive option among all teams?

Yep. In my team until further notice.

Azpilicueta for me... just because chelsea's form is terrible and they have slightly worse fixtures

Need a vote on the following:

    A) Ederson and Baines
    or
    B) Otamendi and Pickford??

Auba and Jesus seem to be the strikers of choice for those on GW35FH Chip. However there are rotation concerns with Firmino.

Who else are you considering? I've currently got Barnes in my standard team anyway, but Lacazette looks like a good bet too.

Wood better than Barnes and he is my backup if Firmino leaked to be rested (so I can upgrade a Mid to KDB/Sane to go alongside Jesus and Sterling),
