One of Double Gameweek 37’s key players becomes another victim of West Brom’s unlikely survival bid as Spurs go down 1-0 at The Hawthorns.

Harry Kane went into the match as the most popular captain pick, with the backing of over a million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and 54 of the game’s top 100 owners.

Some 190,567 (49.3%) of the 385,000+ Triple Captain chips in play were also placed on the Spurs striker, only for a meagre two points to result.

After a couple of low-key performances from which he’d scraped by with two tap-ins, today’s match was at least a busier one for the 37.5%-owned forward.

He had five shots, all in the box, including one effort which was denied by the heroic Ben Foster’s head in the first half. No player has had more attempts in the Gameweek so far but there are no points for shots, as those backing Gabriel Jesus with the captaincy will gleefully point out.

But things could have been a lot worse for Kane’s backers as he came perilously close to scoring an own goal, with Hugo Lloris forced into a miraculous clawing stop to prevent major angst among Fantasy managers.

Spurs’ form has been on the slide since their FA Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of Man United, with a win, loss and a draw from the subsequent three league matches, while Kane now has just two goals and an assist in eight Gameweeks.

That hadn’t stopped 171,907 managers making him the third most purchased player, behind Man City duo Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, heading into Double Gameweek 37.

The striker’s output at home to Newcastle now looks crucial to the outcome of mini-leagues and, indeed, the FPL crown.

But those hoping for a bumper haul to justify their Triple Captain call will be concerned that Kane has managed just one double-figure score in 13 outings now.

That’s a chilling thought for Kane’s supporters ahead of Man City’s meeting with Huddersfield Town, as Jesus and Sterling go into that match backed by 277,000+ and 264,000+ captaincies.

More significantly, they combine to make up over 144,000 of the Triple Captain chips in play.

Good and bad news at the back

Three Spurs defenders – Ben Davies, Kieran Trippier and Jan Vertonghen – were in the top 20 transfers-in for the double as managers hoped Mauricio Pochettino’s side would build on last weekend’s clean sheet against Watford.

Jake Livermore’s last-gasp winner put paid to that, although Vertonghen’s 10.0% ownership were fortuitous when their man was withdrawn before the goal, thus securing him points from a shutout.

But every silver lining needs a cloud, and the Belgian’s 84th-minute withdrawal with an ankle injury makes him an early doubt for Wednesday’s visit from Newcastle.

Mauricio Pochettino was unclear when asked post-match whether he had an idea on the severity of the setback.

“Not yet. We will have to wait until Monday. He twisted his ankle. Hopefully it’s not a big issue.”

At least he saw plentiful pitch-time. The team’s most popular defender, Davies (22.4%), was benched for Danny Rose as Pochettino reverted to a 3-4-2-1 in which Toby Alderweireld joined Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in the back three.

Right wing-back Trippier, meanwhile, retained his place as Serge Aurier missed out with a hamstring issue.

Davies’ 1.3 million owners weren’t the only ones to fall foul of Pochettino’s tinkering as the 14.7%-owned Son Heung-min was another to drop to the bench, with Erik Lamela replacing him in midfield.

Should Chelsea beat Liverpool tomorrow and close the gap to a top-four place to just two points, Spurs’ recent decline means their midweek match with Newcastle could have much riding on it.

The Magpies will have considerably less to play for than West Brom did today, with any number of Fantasy managers hoping Spurs’ second bite of the Gameweek 37 cherry bears a lot more Fantasy fruit.

As for the Baggies, Everton’s last-second equaliser against Southampton keeps them in the Premier League. For now.

A Gameweek 38 trip to Crystal Palace doesn’t exactly inspire investment, although their backline has now kept three clean sheets in four battling matches.

Players I literally had forgotten existed until they were relegated today:

Kevin Wimmer, Geoff Cameron, Marc Muniesa, Darren Fletcher, Ibrahim Affelay, Bojan Krkic, Stephen Ireland, Saido Berahino

Wimmer cost them close to 20m, madness.

I remember those players but if you'd earlier in the week given me 100 seconds to name as many current Stoke players then I wouldn't have mentioned many from that list.

Berahino drserves to be terminated as a football player, how you go from 14 goals a season to his standards is appalling, any equal job and you’d be sacked.

    Bottomed

I was the only person on FFS fighting against the dull as dishwater gameweek 32 Wildcard template of Son Mahrez Gross and Willian.

It was a lonely battle against the masses. I took a lot of stick for daring to suggest an alternative strategy.

I'm not bitter and I will take the high road by refusing to say "I told you so."

The only thing I ask is for next season to open your mind and consider other counter arguments about when to play your second Wildcard.

Not sure you can speak for everyone there.
They mostly play it safe. That's one tactic. I learn a lot from the scoutcasts but not necessarily which players to transfer.
Jay takes more risks but then he has the highest average finish I think so gets his reward.

You've done pretty well from GW31 on, but shame about your 6 red arrows in 7 game-weeks from GW24 to GW30.

If you were in my Doubles, Blanks & Chips mini-league (which started scoring in GW31) then you would be in 23rd position with 434 points, 31 points behind the current leader, and most (but not all) of the teams above you followed the popular strategy.

Or if you were in Jay's The home stretch (which started scoring in GW28) then you would be 111th with 558 points, 59 points behind the current leader.

So your strategy certainly did not trump the FFS textbook playbook!

I think they at least severely damage Virg's claim that his end of season strategy completely trumped the FFS textbook playbook.

There might be other teams that have used Virg's strategy more successfully than he did, but they have some ground to make up in the remainder of this game-week and in GW38 before they can claim that it is a better strategy than the popular FFS one. None of them have yet reached the leading positions in the two mini-leagues mentioned.

The best alternative to Wildcarding in GW32 or 33 appears to be playing the Free Hit in GW31 instead of GW35. Shirin Nizar (the leader of my January to May League) did this, and after red arrows in GW32-34 is now back up to 3rd in The home stretch.

That's Shirin Nizar, who is 3rd in Jay's mini-league (The home stretch).

January to May League, which Shirin currently leads by 57 points and which started scoring in GW22, is one of my mini-leagues.

I genuinely think I was a Sanchez no show and a certain Chris Smalling away from success in 34. Regardless of my individual team points, I honestly do think it was the better strategy.

This ml has been a lot of fun. Thanks a lot! Currently 50th, but without TC chip. Are you planning to put some data to MS Excel and divide this to smaller sub leagues and compare strategies? It is intetesting to see how different strategies worked but there is also more interesting stuff to check.

A lot will depend naturally how tc37 will work with Kane, Jesus and Sterling. Some seem to have gone to bb37 strategy, but surprisingly with Burnley asssets (according to Ragabolly).

One another question is that how much there has been kanexit and even Salido? Has that decision been more important than timing of chips? And if we check also some previous gw:s, did dead end 31 strategy work out?

This would be extremely interesting article. And of course I would like know how I managed compared to others with same strategy like many others.

And if there is too much work for one person, I am ready, willing and able to do part of it. On the other hand Ragabolly probably has more data and tools to do same kind of study that is statistically more accurate.

Ragabolly or yourself are welcome to do this analysis on the teams in my mini-league if they wish, but I don't have the tools myself.

It it looks as if deadending in GW31 followed by a GW32 WC and a GW35 FH was a good strategy, and that the best alternative was probably a GW31 FH followed by a later wildcard (a strategy adopted by Shirin Nizar and Hotdogs For Tea), but the results are not yet definitive.

BB37 probably fits in best with FH31 and WC35 or 36, but is likely to suffer more from rotation problems than BB34.

There is a lot of luck involved in the TC chip - I hope my Triple Captain Jesus is more successful than Kane has
              been so far!

For those who still have Burnley assets, I am surprised that they didn't play their Bench Boost in GW34 instead.

I haven't owned Kane since GW30, and I can't say I've missed him, but I did expect better from some of my other players. The vast majority of leading teams appear to own both Kane and Jesus or Sterling, many having all three.

Salah I would consider to be almost essential as a single game-week captain, but perhaps worth replacing with a double-game player for DGW37 as long as you can then get him back with a free transfer for GW38.

I think it is time to quote those results when the chip strategy had been completed ?

Virg could easily make up 30 points in those leagues this week, and as he is in the minority as a FH34 player (small sample) it would validate his strategy if he gets in to the top 10

I agree that the chip strategies cannot be fully evaluated till GW37 (and perhaps also GW38) has been completed, so it is far too early for Virg to claim that his strategy has been successful, and it has certainly not trumped the FFS textbook playbook.

Those who have Triple Captained Jesus or Sterling could also make up 20 points by the end of the GW (hopefully!). I don't expect Virg to make up many more points than that.

Virg's strategy has so far been a lot less successful than Shirin's (who, like yourself, played FH31), which appears to be the best alternative strategy. Those who played FH31 are judged more fairly in Jay's The home stretch than in my Doubles, Blanks and Chips.

Agreed on all accounts - I am confused by who’s league is who’s ... GW28 league catches the latter Blanks & DGWs etc but the other Jan league catches the first small double gameweek I think.

The January to May League and Doubles, Blanks & Chips are two of my mini-leagues, and so are Top 10k Any Season and Opening Day League (click on my profile for details).

The home stretch is Jay's mini-league (he may also have others).

The January to May League covers the whole of the second half of the season, and is affected by many other things apart from the chip strategy.
Shirin has been most impressive in both January to May League and The home stretch, but Doubles, Blanks and Chips is a bit unkind to strategies involving FH31.

The current top two in Jay's league both followed the popular strategy of WC32, BB34, FH35 and TC37.

Shirin Nizar however is in 3rd position in that league after FH31, TC34, WC35 and BB37.

I think the main issue is reacting to change. Planning for blanks etc hasn’t worked out this season due to form issues, injuries etc

A lot of Kane moaners on here, yet more arguments for form over fixtures. I triple captained myself as he was differential for me.

Bit of a captain hindsight with Willian, Son, Mahrez. Don’t think all 3 suddenly declining was that obvious back in 32

I don't think you get all the stick for offering a different less-established strategy, but more about how you go about it. There's always an air of smugness and self-aggrandising to your posts.

You're like the 'Jose Mourinho' of FFS.

This week hasn't be pretty but, in the grand scheme of things, since deadending my team in 31 and wildcarding in 32, I've jumped from 31k OR to a 4.4k OR. I find it hard to see how I could have done much better with a different strategy. It comes down to picks, ultimately. I guess I didn't go with some of the template ones you mentioned but I think the strategy was sound.

Fair enough you've had your counter ideas. It doesn't look as if it's worked. I think it just involved taking hits at different times. Most will have that template well dismantled at this stage

It was entirely possible to have a GW32 WC, and come out strong.

The advice as far as I can remember has to be to do what was right for your team. In my case, I absolutely needed to activate that wildcard in 32, and at the time the players I brought in should have done well. Mahrez was a disappointment, however some of the other "template" picks such as Barnes did very well for me.

The fact that lots of people went with a 32 wildcard doesn't mean that they didn't think alternative strategies weren't good, it's generally because that's what their team needed.

Ultimate it’s about how you set up your team in advance of the chips and the players you get, not the chip strategy itself. But this season I think the masses signed up for the ‘group think’ too easily and the scouts didn’t think ‘wider’ in any serious manner - their minds were made up and FH was for a blank week; they do tend to converge on all issues (never understood how they all get basically the same team - the top 100 have by far a different mix of players as well as the ‘core’)

The biggest factor imho that impacted on chip strategy success this season was having GW35 blanks put in to GW34 (my GW30 team was well set to deal with 34 & 35 before this happened), resulting in just Burnley as a DGW34 team being common to both 34 and 35 - I reckon that cost me maybe 30 points and much more than any chip value itself.

I love it when people recommend template players you don't rate and the masses clamber for them. They create my differentials.
Aguero, Smalling, Ramsey etc did me so well while the experts where waxing lyrical about Morata, Bailly and Son.
Take what info you want from them but don't forget to listen to your gut.

Noooo why is this a HT? It's just a glorified "LOL @" and "told you so". This sets a precedent for more of the same

I agree with the closing message though: that people on here can be right berks, unable to consider what might be best for other people's teams, or that their personal conclusions might not be the only reasonable perspective.

I've been up against that quite a bit myself. Borderline bullying at times tbh 😆 Even mods can join in on forceful shepherding, which really poops me out. They should be setting an example of reasonable discourse, encouraging discussion instead of shutting it down in an effort to gain upvotes and massage their egos.

Anyway. 5-2-3 again next season 😉

Hi Ragabolly. I spent a lot of time researching, planning and writing this article about the alternative strategy: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/03/23/an-alternative-strategy-for-the-doubles/ The fact is that this is a perfectly viable tactic. As the GW32 Wildcard template crumbles, I actually think this was the better strategy of the two.

had a perfect team in GW16 sitting 19k, with some great differentials getting me to that rank, and then I got hit with 6/7 injuries and dropped players in the space of just two gameweeks. that meant I couldn't get in Liverpool assets (eg. Cout, Firmino), City assets (Otamendi, Sterling, Kun) when they all hauled consistently, and I was limited to taking large point hits to transfer out bad defenders, for more bad defenders, simply because I only had 1 defender who was playing the next gameweek

ever since that happened post GW16/17, my team's never been the same

also over-preparing for DGW22 and BGW31 has hurt as I focused my transfers purely on those gameweeks and wasn't thinking long-term and getting players that I actually wanted

Dont agree at all sorry!! but they should change it to get rid of luck like maybe making it similar to the CL one where you can change players that have played to others still on your bench who are yet to play, that way you feel that your bench players are involved in changing the game and you wont get players having bench fodders and filling the team with top players it makes the game more tactical as a squad....in terms of captain it shouldn't be removed its a great idea but again having the option to switch captains to players yet to play on the bench would make it much more exciting and tactical and makes the manager more involved.

Autosubs. Casuals would have no chance in that game.
You'll want 2 GKs on different days etc.

yeah thats why its good to add it imo...it gets ppl on it more and eliminates bad players and gives the rest a chance to redeem themselves. Autosubs! i think the whole season Ive had one auto sub maybe two on separate occasions the rest of the season the players really pointless taking up funds for no reason theyre are not involved its a shame the concept of having a bench is that you want them to impact the game and score some points.

Rather all 15 score points than changing low scores or bad choices in the hope of scoring high knowing a fail means nothing as you can change that player.

the players coming might score less theres no guarantee its still a risk you take....having 15 players score isnt realistic you obviously want 11 starters but how do you get the 5 bench players more involved? dont you think theyre more or less pointless atm unless its bench boost day? auto sub is good when starting lineups are very unpredictable, thats not the case atm thats all im saying

Lineups haven't been too predictable lately.
                    Replacing a 2 or 1 is hardly a risk.
Game will become too matchday based. Play all your Saturday players 1st etc. You would need to pick more players based on days rather than best 11.

dont get me wrong i hate the CL layout and the fact you can play 2 def but the idea is definitely better it gives you more control over your team and gives those who regularly follow the game an edge over casual players who are rarely on and fluke it especially towards the beginning of the season.

That would be fun and interesting, like UFPL.

I feel captaincy eliminates the fun factor, atleast from mid-season and during doubles where EO of particular player is likely to be well above 100% every other week.

If we can switch captain then after kane blank everyone will move to jesus/sterling who'll play the next day... & If they also blank just move the captain to whoever play on the next day.

        What's the fun of that?

So this season hasn’t been a vintage one but I’ve managed to recover after an average first half of the season and am on the verge of breaking into the top 10k. I’ve done it my own way - repairing my team up to gw 31 then free hitting early, Tc In 34, wc in 35 and bench boosting this week. Not conventional but in all honesty I am happy with this and could never have done it had I followed the “template” use of chips. Should all depend on circumstances as to how you use them but so many on here just followIng the crowd over the season run in. Same captain picks every week, scrambles fo bring in “essential” players every week. The scout cast team up until this week - Az aside - have been guilty of it. Nobody taking a chance, having a bit of fun. Lo and behold Az is having the best season of them all. Really hope next season brings some more independent thinking amongst fpl / ffs managers.

No one forces you (or anyone else moaning about it) to listen to the Scoutcast or take advice from it. Congrats on being a maverick though.

I used the same chip strategy as you! The 35 WC in particular was a nice midground between the 35FH teams and the late 36WC teams and worked well with MCI playing the blank. I agree it's all team dependent.

It's great trawling through endless stat tables and so on but I've had much more success trying to think of my team structure as a whole, which players I'll be able to get at certain times and which I'll have to accept potentially missing out on. The last point is important because people have a hard time accepting you can't have them all, and end up tearing their teams to shreds for -8 for no real upside. If there's one thing I think FFS is missing it's a proper team analysis section/series.

I think your strategy was very good, I was torn between WC35 it 36 and probably went the wrong way in 36.

What I should have done is load up with double game week players in 34 with a -8 and get a new WC team in GW35.

Incidentally the top guy by over 50 points in the GW28 onwards league on here, used the same strategy as you 🙂

Agree with this. We all need to responsible for our own action, not blaming everyone when things goes wrong.

I'm now leading my ML by only 11 points & decided to captain sterling, while i predicted most of my ML rivals will captain kane (& yes they are). Risky move that hopefully pay off.

Sooooo close, yet so far:(. Managed to loose majority of my mini leagues last two days. Sooo frustrating and bad luck in my opinion

    - choose pogba whereas rival has gross
    - rival has Vertonghen (so lucky to get 4 points and to make it worse, he seems fine and will play versus Newcastle)
    - I have Cedric (lost out on potentially 7 extra points due to the last min goal)
    - I have arnie as differential (started great with an assist and should have had a goal too striking the crossbar but gets injured and then I find out he is out for the season potentially so will def miss the second game)

All in all, these small things have cost me 15-20 points. I currently trail my ML leader by 35 points. Too much to make up surely in one gameweek?
