Having checked out the season’s top Goalkeepers, Defenders and Midfielders from a Fantasy perspective, we switch our focus to 2017/18’s best forwards.

Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku are the returning names from our Team of 2016/17, while the third forward to feature in that line-up, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, departed Manchester United in March after only 103 minutes of Premier League football this campaign.

Last season’s team:
Goalkeeper – Tom Heaton
Defenders – Marcos Alonso, Gareth McAuley, Seamus Coleman
Midfielders – Dele Alli, Alexis Sanchez, Christian Eriksen, Joshua King
Forwards – Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane

Our poll, which can be found on the right column of the homepage, allows each site user to vote for up to two attackers.

Harry Kane

Despite frustrating Fantasy managers with blanks in favourable Wembley “home” fixtures against Burnley, Swansea City, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United, Kane actually upped his goal output for the fourth successive season to record only seven points fewer (217) than he mustered in 2016/17.

No striker had more big chances than Kane (39), whose total of 184 shots was almost double that of any other forward. Sergio Aguero, with 94 attempts, was the next highest.

Kane’s 31 bonus points was also the most accrued by any striker, as was his total of 805 on the Bonus Points System. Interestingly though, Kane’s record of 71.7 minutes per Baseline BPS was lower than all but three other strikers (Alvaro Morata, Glenn Murray and Oumar Niasse).

A league-high total of 60 shots off target coupled with 18 big chances missed – only Christian Benteke (20) spurned more – would account for that discrepancy.

The highlight of Kane’s season was undoubtedly back-to-back hat-tricks against Burnley and Southampton over Christmas, with two successive 17-point returns punishing the 100,000+ FPL managers who jettisoned the Tottenham striker in the preceding weeks, including Hall of Fame leader Jay Egersdorff .

Kane didn’t post one double-digit score from Gameweeks 24 to 37, a period in which he also suffered a five-match goal drought – his longest of the season.

He also ended the campaign priced at a season-high of £13.1m and as the most-selected FPL forward: 37.7% of Fantasy managers owned the England captain in Gameweek 38.

Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku began the season as FPL’s most-owned forward, having been selected by over 1.9 million Fantasy managers going into Gameweek 1.

Thirteen points in Manchester United’s 4-0 win over West Ham on the opening weekend was as good as it got for Lukaku, with the Belgian forward subsequently unable to score more than one goal in a match for the rest of the campaign.

A pair of 12-point returns in home fixtures against former clubs Everton and Chelsea were Lukaku’s only other double-digit tallies in 2017/18.

Lukaku’s total of 16 goals was his fourth-lowest as a Premier League striker, having hit a career-high of 25 goals last season. Lukaku’s cumulative score of 162 was also 59 points down on his total in 2016/17.

The opening two months of the season was Lukaku’s most productive spell, with the Belgium striker topping the scoring charts with seven goals following the culmination of Gameweek 7. A run of one goal in nine games then followed, during which time Lukaku’s price fell by £0.5m.

All 16 of Lukaku’s goals came from inside the box, demonstrating his predatory instincts, though it should be noted that he missed half of the 22 big chances that were presented to him this season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Roberto Firmino were the only classified forwards who provided more assists (seven) this season.

Jamie Vardy

Vardy’s total score of 183 points meant that he finished second behind Kane in the overall forward standings.

The Leicester City striker provided a steady drip-feed of attacking points throughout the season, bookended by two 13-point returns in Gameweeks 1 and 38. Vardy never went more than four matches without scoring, though didn’t register more than one goal in a game outside of his braces on the first and final days of the season.

Ending 2017/18 on 20 goals, all of which came from inside the box, Vardy scored two-thirds of his 21 big chances, a better ratio than any of the featured forwards in our poll. Only Ayoze Perez offered better value in attack this season, with Vardy returning 20.8 points per million spent

Vardy’s meagre total of two assists was, however, his lowest in four years as a Premier League striker.

Roberto Firmino

The Brazilian striker, in his first season as an FPL forward, is ironically nominated as much for his all-round teamwork and creativity than he is for scoring goals.

No forward supplied more assists (eight), made more key passes (57) or created more big chances (11) than Firmino this season. The ex-Hoffenheim star also completed more passes in the opposition half (642) and final third (403) than any other recognised striker.

Those statistics go a long way to explaining how Firmino ended up with 29 bonus points this season, a total second only to Kane among FPL forwards. The Liverpool attacker’s average of 9.2 minutes per BBPS was also the best mean among strikers who played more than 1,000 minutes in 2017/18.

That ability to earn bonus allowed Firmino to collect additional points in 12 of the 13 matches he scored in.

Though his total of 15 goals was less than half of Mohamed Salah (32), it represented the Brazilian’s best return in a Liverpool shirt.

The high point of Firmino’s season undoubtedly came in Gameweeks 18-20, when he racked up three double-digit scores and a total of 36 points in fixtures against Bournemouth, Arsenal and Swansea.

Sergio Aguero

The Argentinian forward scored 20+ goals for the fourth consecutive season, despite his 2017/18 campaign effectively being cut short in Gameweek 30.

Aguero hit hat-tricks in wins over Watford and Newcastle United, but the highlight of his season was undeniably the four second-half goals he scored in Manchester City’s 5-1 win over Leicester in Gameweek 27.

The City striker’s average of a goal every 93.8 minutes was the best in the division among FPL forwards with more than 1,000 minutes to their name, while his mean of 6.8 points per match was unsurpassed by any other frontman.

No striker created more big chances this season than Aguero (11), whose total of 40 key passes was second only to Firmino among those classified as a forward.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang

Given that the former Borussia Dortmund striker only made his Arsenal debut in Gameweek 26, it seems a little odd to factor Aubameyang into any end-of-season awards discussion.

But the statistics speak for themselves.

Despite being occasionally used from the left flank, the Gabonese striker only failed to produce attacking returns in three of his 13 league appearances for Arsenal, scoring ten goals and providing four assists.

Aubameyang’s average of 6.7 points per match was only 0.1 short of Aguero’s season-high among FPL forwards, while his goals conversion rate of 32.3% was better than any FPL player who attempted more than ten shots this season.

Aubameyang also accumulated 12 bonus points in his 15 appearances, a total that wasn’t bettered by any Arsenal midfielder or forward in the whole of 2017/18.

Glenn Murray

In a season where budget options fail to impress, Brighton’s veteran was the only forward who started at a cost less than £8.5m to score more than ten goals.

Although Ayoze Perez was the top value (22.5) forward, six of his eight goals came in the final eight matches. Meanwhile, Jordan Ayew, the most bought (1.5m) budget forward, netted just one goal in the opening 18 Gameweeks and notched just seven overall.

Arguably, Murray was the only reliable cut-price candidate over an extended period, with 11 of his 12 efforts (four penalties) scored between Gameweeks 9-29.

Indeed, he was more clinical in front of goal than Kane, Aguero and Firmino, with shot accuracy (45.3%) and goal conversion (22.6%) statistics bettering that trio of counterparts.

Firmino's points per game is about the same as Moses, Alonso, Azpi, Monreal, Robertson, Jones, Kolasinac.

In what world would I ever spend 10 million on a guy who, at his very best, is going to average 4.9 points per game?
          He's not even captainable.

He would need to score 25 goals to justify that kind of price, which is never, ever going to happen.

I understand why people like him. Those who owned him from GW15 to GW30 think he was a genius pick, and they were super clever for using their crystal ball to precisely select when he would massively overperform. But if you factor in the first 15 games, and the final 8 games, he was a terrible FPL asset on average.

Kane scored 217pts for £12.5m. £12.5m = 12.5% of budget. To get a Top 10k rank you need 2,400pts. That includes about 600pts for captaincy so take off 300pts to get a raw score of 2,100pts. 2,100*0.125 = 260pts so for me he underperformed relative to his price (and that excludes the price rise to £13m which made him even less valuable IMO).

There were three simple rules to follow when buying/selling Kane:

          1. Buy him at the start of September
          2. Sell him just before he plays ManU
          3. Buy him just after he's played ManC

          That would have got you:
          59 points from 6 appearances (GW 4-9)
          58 points from 6 appearances (GW 19-24)
          34 points from 4 appearances (GW 34-38)
          Total 151 from 16 appearances = 9.4ppg

Yeah, I wish I'd known that last August! I was just backing up your point that Kane was too expensive to hold on to for the whole season. For any player priced at 12.5m you have to pick and choose when you're going to own them, getting the timing right is the tricky part.

    Salah £11m

Posting this to a very small crowd, I know, but here I go anyway…..

Before thoughts completely turn to Play-Off Final/Champions League Final/World Cup, I'll just throw in this post-mortem on parts of the season just gone...

Having discovered I had a 'supposed' FF World Ranking of 123, I set about comparing some of my last season's stats with the 122 upper echelons. (My 9-year final positions vary from just under 35k - 460, so no disasters so far).

Team Value :- 107.1 (1st/123) Something I've always focused on, but with the average above me standing at '103.8' I'm clearly barking up the wrong tree. After-all, why spend the money on Sanchez (just because you can) when Milivojevic or GroB + spare cash will do. This leads on to...

Hit Points Taken :- 76 (5th/123) Far more than the average of just under '44', (although exactly half that taken by the maverick who took '152'). I often took hits with TV in mind, so curb one and I should curb the other.

Bench Points :- 291 (3rd/123) Average was 216.This has always been my major problem. I have always liked a reasonable bench to cover injuries/suspensions etc, but when players like GroB or Shaqiri become your cheapest offence players, I guess you're asking for trouble.

Captain Points :- 569 (107th=/123) Hate it with a passion. Average was 604. Not sure how much is luck and how much is skill, but when you only pick up 9 points from your triple captain you know you possess neither.

GK Correct Picks :- 77%(73rd=/123) The average is 79%, so not sure where to go on this. One manager had a 100% success rate yet had 9 different keepers on his books throughout the season! I was surprised to learn that I had used 8, but all I can remember is Ryan scoring points for fun on my bench whilst de Gea burned me. I scored 164 GK points. Had I played Fabianski all season I would have scored 157, plus a few extra from BB.

Gameweek above average score :- 32 (41st=/123) Not sure why I even bothered checking this stat. The average was 31.5. All I can say is that as an active manager, it hurts when you can't beat the average score.

    tl;dr

Lessons learned :- Take fewer hits; don't chase TV ; carry more 'rabbits' in the 15-man squad ; place the captain armband on the vice-captain ; stick, (as in previous seasons), with two cheap keepers.

Good advice, I'd just captain the Scout pick every week and you shouldn't have to worry about that. Wouldn't spend a second worrying about team value.

Auba or Kane for next season? I'm going Auba as cheaper, though I expect both to top 25 goals.

Emery says he would rather win 5-4 than 1-0, so tracking back shouldn't be a problem.

That's great news because Auba was delivering even though he was playing on the left. Hope he isn't priced beyond 11.5m as I think he can deliver 25 goals and be an alternative capt choice vs the weak teams

Both! Using Fantasy Football Fix Price Predictions, this is the side I’m looking at starting with:

      Ryan (4.5m)

Rudiger (5.5m) Van Dijk (5.5m) Van Aanholt (5m)

      Sterling (10.5m) Mane (9m) Zaha (7.5m) Arnautovic (7m) Izquierdo (6m)

      Kane (12m) Aubameyang (11m)

(All Fixture Dependent on GW1 XI but based on players I expect to have good seasons)

If Aubameyang is playing from the left and Lacazette through the middle who will be the better pick? I might favour Laca if Emery sets up that way.

I'll go Auba due to penos. Both could be an option. Arsenal could win the thing with a few choice signings.

Same could be said about pretty much any team though. With the right signings WBA could win the CL within the next couple of years.

4-3-1-2 hopefully. 3 defensive midfielders with full backs who bomb forward. Arsenal need to buy two CBs and two DMs. But if they do, then something like:

      Cech
      Bellerin - ????? - ????? - Monreal
      ????? - Xhaxa - ?????
      Ozil
      Auba - Laca

Both will be decent options imo. But if another wide player signs as expected,Laca could be rotated with him imo. Auba will be nailed,is the better player,on pens, and shown that he can do it playing wide too.

Will also monitor it too as expect Lacazette to be priced at 9.5m while Aubameyang will be 11m minimum, so Lacazette could be value for money

It really is painful. Don't quite understand it. They went a month before the tournament previously. It's surely going to hurt sign-ups and also suggests that the game and site will have minimal testing.

I think it was in 2010 when they had to change the scoring system even before the end of the first matchday.

Evra was generally regarded as man of the match, but was given a negative score because of the points they deducted whenever his crosses failed to complete, so they had to stop deducting these points.

Same thing happened with UEFA and UCL fantasy 3 seasons back, it was the worst fantasy ever and only started on 2nd gameweek.

Cheers Mark . It's a long way back though. This is pretty much make or break as our miserable owners are bleeding the club dry. The team is essentially Michael Doyle , McNulty and 9 talented kids of whom probably at least 6 will be sold off over the summer and then we have to start again. Really looking forward to the weekend - going down on Sunday.

Have a bit of a soft spot a for Coventry.
On my many trips to Birmingham Airport always imagined going rogue and just taking the sign to Coventry and into the sun set.

Although everytime its mentioned on Midlands Today (regional news) its always for the most mundane reasons. Like over zealous bus lane cameras or opening a civic duck pond.

As for team, did well in FA cup and destroyed it in the play off semi and Mark Robins seems a bit of a proper gaffer.

They really are the cliched sleeping giant though. Still remember the Gordon Strachan and Robbie Keane era.

I'm trying to work out the thinking there. If Liverpool score, there's what - 50% chance it's Salah? So do PP think that Liverpool can't score?

PP don't lose though. Because the refund is via a free bet. So punters still go back to PP to use their free bet. Some of them will win with their free bet, but the vast majority won't.

I do think that it is a very risky stance for them to take. They are trying to attract football money as generally in my experience their football odds are always skinnier than other firms. I will check out anytime goalscorer prices to see if they are protecting this position by going short on Salah.

I can see Burnley struggling a tad what with the old Europa league and all that. Not the biggest squad around to cope with it.

Good point on Burnley. I'd still fancy their goalie to do the business though. Salah will be 11.5m imo or higher

Dubravka is my keeper next year I think! Possibly rotating with Ryan if the PL sticks to Newcastle/Brighton rotation.

Robertson is looking a certainty, Auba too. Not sure about Arnautovic, I wouldn't be too interested if he's shifted to a forward but plays back in midfield under Pellegrini.

I'd go for a United defender too, although whch one entirely depends on who is signed.

Dubra is a good shout. Liverpool defence strongest by a mile since VVD came in, meaning a double up might be better than a Utd. Not clear who will start for Utd

Thanks for all the help Sid. I've actually been toying around and have come up with 2 options to choose from.

I've made some players more expensive than the projected prices but a few cheaper. Hopefully the overpriced ones come in cheaper so I can afford the underpriced ones and improve bench options.

                    OPTION1

                    6.0 DDG 4.0? =10

                    6.5 Mendy 6.5 Robertson 6.0 Coleman *4.5 Lowton *4.5 Janmaat =28.0

                    13.5 Salah 9.5 Sane 8.0 Zaha (4.5x2)=40

                    10.0 Firmino 7.5 King (4.5) =22

                    OPTION2

                    6.0 DDG 4.0? =10

                    6.5 Mendy 6.5 Robertson 6.0 Coleman 5.5 PVA 4.5 Morrison =29

                    13.5 Salah 9.5 Sane *5.5 Hoilett (4.5x2)=37.5

                    11.5 Lukaku 7.5 Tosun (4.5) =23.5

Feel he can score vs anyone and should be fresh after no World Cup, alternatively I could start with Kane if he costs 12m and downgrade one of my 5.5m DF's to a 4.5m and then get Aubameyang for GW3, all depends on how much Kane costs 🙂 hoping he comes in at 12m

"Kane actually upped his goal output for the fourth successive season to record only seven points fewer (217) than he mustered in 2016/17."

Ahem. After playing 551 minutes MORE than he did in 2016/17. What a letdown he was for his price.

In 16/17 Kane was taking 3.8 shots per game, it went up to 5.3 shots per game in 17/18.

I'm sure Kane was aware that he massively overperformed his xG in 16/17, and the only realistic way to beat it was a combination of playing more minutes while kicking the ball at the goal more. This is what happened.

He only upped his goal output if you include the one that narrowly missed his shoulder.
And his assist output was one less than 2015/16 and 5 less than 2014/15 and 2016/17.

    9.0 odds for this:

    Pool to lift the trophy
    Salah to score
    Over 2.5 goals
    Both teams to score
    Ramos to be booked

    Worth a punt?

Really hard to decide on the best forwards.

We have to take account of minutes played, chances created for their relative teams and minutes per goal/chance.

Nothing much between Salah, Kane, Aguero and Vardy.....Lukaku and Firmino lagging behind...

I think that it's more important to have plans for the transfers to get extra games. So unless you plan on using all of your transfers. Are you sure that Augusto is going to start? Rest looks okay

Just read the telegraph scoring. "In order to earn a Full Clean Sheet bonus (5 pts), your player must complete at least 60 minutes of the match and his team must keep a clean sheet for the entire match (excluding penalty shoot-outs)." So if a defender is subbed out in the 70 minute with the score 0-0 but then his team allows a goal he'll lose his cs unlike fpl, correct?

Also is there anyway to get two extra games from one transfer. I tried to find one but couldn't but was wondering if anyone else found a way to. Transfers obviously would be best used to get extra games

Literally the next line down after the one you pasted...

"If a player is on the pitch for less than 60 minutes and his team keeps a clean sheet for the full match, he'll score a Part Clean Sheet bonus (2 pts)."

What I'm saying is that it seems to me that if a player plays the first 70 minutes and then is subbed with the scoreline at 0-0 but then when he's on the bench he's team allows a goal, he'll lose his cs points
