Our analysis of the Fantasy iTeam game continues now with a look at the player list.

After checking out the rule set ahead of Thursday’s World Cup 2018 opener between Russia and Saudi Arabia, we scour the market for differentials at both ends of the pitch in a two-part series of articles.

First up, then, we focus on defence, assessing the overlooked goalkeepers and defenders who could bring in big returns.

Goalkeepers

A trio of Premier League-based stoppers dominate the ownership between the posts, with David De Gea (23.2%), Hugo Lloris (12%) and Thibaut Courtois (11%) proving very popular picks for our starting XIs.

That leaves a host of low-owned options jostling for attention, with some differential picks among the group favourites.

Willy Caballero – owned by just 2%, Argentina’s back-up keeper is expected to deputise for the injured Sergio Romero.

Caballero started his nation’s recent friendly, a 4-0 win over Haiti, and now looks in the driving seat ahead of Group C encounters with Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Priced at just £5.7m in FiT, Caballero is cheaper than the likes of defensive team-mates Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m, 12.8% owned) and Javier Mascherano (£6.0m) as a route into a defence that conceded 16 times in 18 qualifying matches, the second most resilient record among the South American sides.

Fernando Muslera – the Uruguay number one offers a strong source of clean sheets for Group A showdowns with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Russia.

With Atletico Madrid centre-halves Diego Godin (£6.0m, 11.1% ownership) and Jose Giminez (£5.9m) stationed in front of him, Muslera looks set to continue a fine record that’s delivered four shutouts in five since the qualifiers ended.

Yet he’s owned by just 3.5% of FiT managers, despite boasting a price tag of £5.7m.

David Ospina – Group H fixtures with Japan, Poland and Senegal look encouraging for the Colombian number one.

The only player to start every match in qualifying, the Arsenal stopper (£5.8m) is a secure pick but has persuaded just 1.3% of managers to snap him up.

Colombia make their way to Russia 2018 in fine defensive form, too, with three clean sheets in their last four matches – only France have scored against them of late.

Defenders

Again, there is significant scope for differentials in our defensive set-ups.

Brazil’s Marcelo (30%) and his Real Madrid team-mate, Spain’s Sergio Ramos 20%, are the most popular defenders in FiT, though just behind that duo, Germany trio Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Joshua Kimmich, along with France’s Raphael Varane, all sit between 14-15% ownership.

Victor Moses – the Chelsea wing-back hands us an intriguing out of position prospect for Group D matches with Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.

Listed as a defender in Fantasy iTeam, Moses is mainly utilised wide in a 4-2-3-1 for Nigeria but has recently been stationed up front in a 3-5-2 set-up.

With more goals (three) than any team-mate in the qualifying period, he comes in at £5.8m and has been drafted in by just 3.7% of managers.

Djibril Sidibe – priced at £5.8m, the right-back offers a budget-friendly route into France’s defence compared with team-mates Samuel Umtiti (£6.3m), Varane (£6.2m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m).

Sidibe made more appearances (nine) and kept more clean sheets (six) than any other French defender in qualification and also chipped in with three assists.

A record of two goals and seven assists for Monaco in Ligue 1 last term showcases his attacking potential ahead of Group C matches with Australia, Peru and Denmark.

Yet just 4.1% have currently opted for the forward-thinking full-back.

Kieran Trippier – with Kyle Walker set to feature in central defence under Gareth Southgate, Trippier is expected to take up the right wing-back role.

Although he started just once during the qualifiers, the Spurs defender since appeared in five of England’s six friendlies and looks to have a share of set-pieces, having supplied an assist for Gary Cahill’s recent goal against Nigeria.

No defender supplied more assists than Trippier in the Premier League last season, though just 4.7% of FiT managers are currently on board for Group G showdowns with Tunisia, Panama and Belgium.

Ricardo Rodriguez – three goals, two assists and six clean sheets over nine qualifying appearances underlines the left-back’s potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Two of those efforts arrived via the spot, with Rodriguez the number one penalty-taker for Switzerland.

He also shares corner kicks with Xherdan Shaqiri and was second only to the Stoke playmaker for chances created for the Swiss in qualifying.

Three clean sheet in four recent friendlies shows that Switzerland have maintained that resilience. Spain were the only side to score against them in that run, with Rodriguez scoring his nation’s goal in a 1-1 draw.

Priced at £5.8m, the AC Milan full-back sits in only 1.5% of FiT squads ahead of Group E matches against Brazil, Serbia and Costa Rica.

Andreas Granqvist – another defender with spot-kick duties, the Sweden centre-half scored three penalties during qualification.

Costing £5.5m, Granqvist is owned by mere 0.5% as he prepares for Group F encounters with South Korea, Germany and Mexico.

Also a big threat from set-pieces, he started all 12 of Sweden’s qualifying matches, helping them to seven clean sheets, including a pair of shutouts in the play-offs against Italy.

How many "good" captains are you looking to have over the course of a round for the group stages?

    I currently have...

    Cavani, Griezmann, Mueller, Lukaku, Rodriguez

Wondering if I might be putting too much thinking into having a good(ish) captain option every day.

For example just having Griezmann, Neymar and Lukaku would probably be enough to nail a good score you'd think?

Yup, they're all good but I wonder if I'm spreading funds a little just to get them. I could get Neymar and downgrade one of the above for example.

Neymar v Switzerland could be very nice indeed

            Muller is an interesting one.

Was one of the first names on the team sheet but when streaming last night a lot of people are against him. Apparently he's been out of form scoring wise.

Good record in the World Cup though!

I think the name of the competition is somewhat irrelevant. He was poor at the Euro's and hasn't scored for Germany for over a year iirc

              Here's his club form:

First number is appearances, second is goals. Obviously was huge in the World Cup 2014 but look at that drop-off. Same for his national team numbers.

              2014–15 32 13
              2015–16 31 20
              2016–17 29 5

those stats are little misleading. 29 games is actually 22 starts and 7 subs. total minutes was 1966 which is just less than 22 90 minute games. He also had 14 assists. that's equivalent to 5.7 points per 90 min not taking into account clean sheets

I'm concerned about him also, feel I might be being suckered into a 'nostalgia pick' but when he's classed as a midfielder in a team that should comfortably top their group it's tricky to remove him once you've added him...

Sure, but the equivalent numbers for your Eriksen pick instead:

                2014–15 38 10
                2015–16 35 6
                2016–17 36 8
                2017–18 37 10

Which mids have better numbers? Not many I can think of...

If he was classed as a striker I'd definitely ignore him and Camzy's numbers don't look great based on what we've come to expect but as a midfielder in this game he doesn't have many who can rival his record so he could still be worth a gamble. I'm torn.

I mean I will sometimes but if my captain gets a goal and there's another option later I think I won't change and go for two goals or three. The stick line is probably not very advanced for me

I don't think having options everyday is a bad strategy but I'm wondering how much concern there should be about that if you have 3 very good options already.

For example Eriksen currently isn't in my team because I have Griezmann as a captain option the same day.

But that means I'm counting out Eriksen because Rodriguez is another captaincy option down the line. I'm not even considering that Eriksen might just be the better option overall anyway.

As many as possible! One of your first couple might do alright but then you decide to roll the dice and the next one fails so you need another to fall back on! I defo want a decent captain choice on the last days.

Pretty pleased with Al-Dawsari, Cavanni, Mendy/Cueva, Neymar, Lukaku, James. Saudi and the Peru/France options the weakest. Pretty punty midfield (likely 5-2-3), but overall like my team:

      Gallese, Uzoho
      Kimmich, Mendy, Godin, Muenier, Miranda
James, Nandez, Cueva, Lo Celso, Al-Dawsari
      Neymar, Lukaku, Cavanni

    Getting late. May as well:

    Uzoho
    Kimmich Godin Mendy
    Eriksen, Coutinho, Willian, Aldawsari
    Jesus Mitrovic DeArrascaeta

    Diallo | JRod, Munier, Trippier

Mendy could become Pavard if Sidibe is confirmed out, though I wouldn't know what to do with that spare 1m! What do you think?

It's a very you team 😉 If you're tied to that kind of structure, looks good. Could go Al Dawsari to Cueva or Meza with the change. Maybe even keep 0.5 in the bank

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Cheers, are Cueva and Meza nailed? I'd be nervous about introducing more instability, what with DeArrascaeta, Tripper and Mendy, especially, teetering on the edge of benched status. Could just get Lukaku over Jesus. I've not looked above 9.0m for a striker yet, and they look pretty tasty! haha!

As you can see, I've picked a neutral team filled with players who won't score a goal for either side.

If I sell Jesus I'd have another Brazil slot for Danilo if I fancied it. Would you sell either Trippier or Godin for him? (Forgetting any eggs-and-baskets philosophies).

              • 8 Years

Yeah probably trippier - Godin less risky 🙂 I don't actually subscribe to the eggs-baskets thing, but can see the appeal (at least psychologically). I have triple Brazil, double Morocco and double Belgium!

Posts like Kimmich having 9 assists are misleading. Germany scored a huge number of goals against small opponents and even if his goal involvement is twenty pecent then he is probably getting one assist in the group for an extra million or so. I can’t see that as good value for money

Players like Hazard and Lukaku are not worth it because in the early rounds they are not really likely to be your captain.

The earlier a Player plays the More likely we “stick”.

Right ? So spend the big bucks earlier in the week.

France v Australia looks like the best fixture for captaincy up to that point which was a big reason for me getting Griezmann. Mbappe has some kind of injury and Dembele marked as a striker doesn't leave too many options.

Yeah exactly that’s why I’m worried, I had Mbappe but didn’t wanna risk with the news so managed to scrape enough to upgrade to Suarez

That's not bad either. Suarez offers a good captain a day earlier basically. Many will have to go with an Uruguay defender or Isco for captaincy on that day I would imagine.

I plan to BB in R2 and WC in R3. So it is for the first two matches. I am sure that most people would agree that Idowu is more likely to outscore Kvist. Same is true for Ljajic and De Arrascaeta. I am not so sure Trippier will compensate this difference when compared to El Kaabi in the first two matches.

This means that Pavard (4.5) would be an option. Not only is he cheap, but he's played very well every time he's come on for France

So Griezmann was one of the first names in my team but I don't see him in many others - any particular reason why?

Cavani, Lukaku, Werner, Mbappe etc are the reasons

4 goals in qualifying, one of the lowest, highish price, France looked awful vs US.

Basically when you have Lukaku, Werner, Lewandowski, Jesus, Cavani all at an even lower price they're better bets.

Hmm fair enough, though I wouldn't include Lewandowski in that list - will Poland actually score that many goals compared to France?

Strongly disagree, guys like Lukaku and Lewandoski beating up on the likes of Gibraltar and Armenia is rather meaningless. Lewandowski has never even scored in a major tournament.

How's about the fact that Griezmann scored twice as many as anyone at the Euros. Tournaments are a different to animal compared to qualifying and he's shown he can do it.

That was my reasoning. It's not like he's past his peak and his major tournament record speaks for itself.

Not saying Griezmann is bad. But for 0.5m more and up against Lukaku, Cavani, Werner, Jesus I think you can pick better.

You think Griezmann is better than any of those accounting for form and fixtures?

Eh he'll bag a few against Senegal. And Lukaku is playing Panama who've conceded like 8 goals in their last 3 games.

I think form is form and those guys are clearly great footballers.

Maybe Lewa not as good as Cavani due to fixtures but it's not that they'll suddenly stop scoring

Personally going with Griezmann, Lukaku and Jesus. Apart from Jesus I don't think there's a better prospect than him for the price.

If you mean the 'consensus', I would say that many are overlooking him. And the reasons that might be true are:

                  1. People tend to avoid double or triple ups, and there are other Brazil options
                  2. Willian didn't play a particularly integral part of qualifying (I don't think)
                  3. Isco is a popular choice at 8.5m
                  4. They've run out of money or slots in the team after spending on other options. Willian simply isn't a 'priority' even if people like him.
                  4. The idea that goals will be shared amongst Brazilians, and that Willian's share is not one of the greatest
                  5. Willian isn't as big a name as Neymar and Coutinho, which also relates to the other options.
                  6. Relatively quite season, with many fantasy managers having poor experiences with him (particularly relating to his nailedness), which they could project into the WC.

Regardless, I think he's decent value, and I'm more likely to keep him than Jesus (I have Jesus, Cout AND Willian). 🙂

              I think they'll line up
              Neymar - Jesus - Willian
              Paulinho - Casemiro - Coutinho
Marcelo - who cares - Danilo

Morocco, Senegal and Iran more chance of a CS from first game or first two games (looking at the CS HT). On that basis I'm gone for Ozoho + Diallo, but haven't looked into it much and could easily switch to El Kajoui. No idea about save potential or how factors could have changed since the HT.
