Our analysis of the Fantasy iTeam game continues now with a look at the player list.

After checking out the rule set ahead of Thursday’s World Cup 2018 opener between Russia and Saudi Arabia, we scour the market for differentials at both ends of the pitch in a two-part series of articles.

First up, then, we focus on defence, assessing the overlooked goalkeepers and defenders who could bring in big returns.

Goalkeepers

A trio of Premier League-based stoppers dominate the ownership between the posts, with David De Gea (23.2%), Hugo Lloris (12%) and Thibaut Courtois (11%) proving very popular picks for our starting XIs.

That leaves a host of low-owned options jostling for attention, with some differential picks among the group favourites.

Willy Caballero – owned by just 2%, Argentina’s back-up keeper is expected to deputise for the injured Sergio Romero.

Caballero started his nation’s recent friendly, a 4-0 win over Haiti, and now looks in the driving seat ahead of Group C encounters with Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Priced at just £5.7m in FiT, Caballero is cheaper than the likes of defensive team-mates Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m, 12.8% owned) and Javier Mascherano (£6.0m) as a route into a defence that conceded 16 times in 18 qualifying matches, the second most resilient record among the South American sides.

Fernando Muslera – the Uruguay number one offers a strong source of clean sheets for Group A showdowns with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Russia.

With Atletico Madrid centre-halves Diego Godin (£6.0m, 11.1% ownership) and Jose Giminez (£5.9m) stationed in front of him, Muslera looks set to continue a fine record that’s delivered four shutouts in five since the qualifiers ended.

Yet he’s owned by just 3.5% of FiT managers, despite boasting a price tag of £5.7m.

David Ospina – Group H fixtures with Japan, Poland and Senegal look encouraging for the Colombian number one.

The only player to start every match in qualifying, the Arsenal stopper (£5.8m) is a secure pick but has persuaded just 1.3% of managers to snap him up.

Colombia make their way to Russia 2018 in fine defensive form, too, with three clean sheets in their last four matches – only France have scored against them of late.

Defenders

Again, there is significant scope for differentials in our defensive set-ups.

Brazil’s Marcelo (30%) and his Real Madrid team-mate, Spain’s Sergio Ramos 20%, are the most popular defenders in FiT, though just behind that duo, Germany trio Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Joshua Kimmich, along with France’s Raphael Varane, all sit between 14-15% ownership.

Victor Moses – the Chelsea wing-back hands us an intriguing out of position prospect for Group D matches with Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.

Listed as a defender in Fantasy iTeam, Moses is mainly utilised wide in a 4-2-3-1 for Nigeria but has recently been stationed up front in a 3-5-2 set-up.

With more goals (three) than any team-mate in the qualifying period, he comes in at £5.8m and has been drafted in by just 3.7% of managers.

Djibril Sidibe – priced at £5.8m, the right-back offers a budget-friendly route into France’s defence compared with team-mates Samuel Umtiti (£6.3m), Varane (£6.2m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m).

Sidibe made more appearances (nine) and kept more clean sheets (six) than any other French defender in qualification and also chipped in with three assists.

A record of two goals and seven assists for Monaco in Ligue 1 last term showcases his attacking potential ahead of Group C matches with Australia, Peru and Denmark.

Yet just 4.1% have currently opted for the forward-thinking full-back.

Kieran Trippier – with Kyle Walker set to feature in central defence under Gareth Southgate, Trippier is expected to take up the right wing-back role.

Although he started just once during the qualifiers, the Spurs defender since appeared in five of England’s six friendlies and looks to have a share of set-pieces, having supplied an assist for Gary Cahill’s recent goal against Nigeria.

No defender supplied more assists than Trippier in the Premier League last season, though just 4.7% of FiT managers are currently on board for Group G showdowns with Tunisia, Panama and Belgium.

Ricardo Rodriguez – three goals, two assists and six clean sheets over nine qualifying appearances underlines the left-back’s potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Two of those efforts arrived via the spot, with Rodriguez the number one penalty-taker for Switzerland.

He also shares corner kicks with Xherdan Shaqiri and was second only to the Stoke playmaker for chances created for the Swiss in qualifying.

Three clean sheet in four recent friendlies shows that Switzerland have maintained that resilience. Spain were the only side to score against them in that run, with Rodriguez scoring his nation’s goal in a 1-1 draw.

Priced at £5.8m, the AC Milan full-back sits in only 1.5% of FiT squads ahead of Group E matches against Brazil, Serbia and Costa Rica.

Andreas Granqvist – another defender with spot-kick duties, the Sweden centre-half scored three penalties during qualification.

Costing £5.5m, Granqvist is owned by mere 0.5% as he prepares for Group F encounters with South Korea, Germany and Mexico.

Also a big threat from set-pieces, he started all 12 of Sweden’s qualifying matches, helping them to seven clean sheets, including a pair of shutouts in the play-offs against Italy.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I don't see the value in Kimmich. I would get someone even more dependable, for example Godin, and improve the midfield.

Ljajic is a strong pick - better than Cueva, imo.

This World Cup needs to start soon. I'm just constantly thinking about and making changes to my team!

I've got 4 midfielders in the 6.0-6.5 range (for the first two Gameweeks before using the WC) - Cueva, Lo Celso, Carrasco, and Ljajic. Have I got the best available four there, based on the two fixtures they all have? (I'm planning to potentially change Cueva ahead of GW2 as Peru play France)

My other MD is J.Rod. I would ideally like a stronger midfield but my strikers are Lukaku, Jesus and Cavani, and I just can't bare to remove one of those for a striker 2-3m cheaper. I have a strong defence too, but taking out a 5.5m defender for France/Uruguay/Brazil etc seems pointless when 1m less will only really get me defenders who play for the weaker nations or are a rotation risk. One area of the pitch had to be weaker and for me it's the midfield, but we'll see!

He's likely to play as part of a 3 behind Aguero, alongside Messi and Di Maria. He's very direct and a steal at 5.5 if he starts more than one game. Playing with the likes of Messi and Aguero means he could get an assist by not doing much at all.

I've managed to squeeze in Ziyach (who was always on my shortlist anyway) for Lo Celso. Had to rejig slightly but content again with how it has ended up.

      Pickford, Uzoho
      Meunier, Godin, Mendy, Danilo, Dalsgaard
      Ziyach, J.Rodriguez, Ljajic, Cueva, Carrasco
      Cavani, Jesus, Lukaku

Just need all of them to play in GW1 now!

    HUGE day tomorrow!

Less than 24 hours until the Premier League fixtures are released and we can start preparing fixture tickers, defensive rotations, analysing who has the tricky early schedule, etc. 🙂

          Sabaly to Dalsgaard?

Marcelo to Danilo also gives you 1.5 to play with (which could enable Ljajic to a big hitter if you also downgrade Belhanda)

        RMT

        GK | Pickford | England | 5.5m
        GK | Uzoho | Nigeria | 4m

        DEF | Meunier | Belgium | 6m
        DEF | Godin | Uruguay| 5.5m
        DEF | Varela | Uruguay| 4.5m
        DEF | Pavard | France| 4.5m
        DEF | Idowu | Nigeria| 4m

        MID | Rodriguez | Colombia | 9m
        MID | Isco| Spain | 8.5m
        MID | Ziyach | Morocco | 7m
        MID | Lo Celso | Argentina | 6m
        MID | Al Dawsari | Saudi Arabia | 5m

        FOR | Suarez | Uruguay | 10.5m
        FOR | Griezmann | France | 10m
        FOR | Hazard | Belgium | 10m

I wanted to have both England and Belgium cover at the back as I believe both have very good chance to keep clean sheets against Tunisia and Panama and don't meet until game 3

I also included double Uruguay defence as I think they have a strong chance of clean sheets in their games against Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Russia. Especially as they are playing Egypt first where Salah might be out

Midfield I am quite unsure about as don't see that many good options for the prices. I want to have James as I think he will do well. Likewise Isco I think is an exciting player for Spain and will be involved in their goals but has a tough game against Portugal first.

The cheaper midfielders I am not too familiar with to be honest so have gone with Ziyach, Lo Celso and Al Dawsari based on comments I've read here but other players like Cueva, Nandez and Ndiaye could also be good options. A bit of a lottery with these guys imo

Up front I have gone with Suarez and Harzard over Cavani and Lukaku as I believe they will get better returns - which doesn't seem to be the prevailing view on here and I know it is close between them.

Lewandowski will do very well this tournament I think so will be happy to have him

There are a lot of decent strikers so will be behind the sofa when Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo, Greizmann, Wermer etc are playing if I go with current line up!

Looking at my team having no Brazil or Germany feels wrong so could easily change what I have at the moment

        Any feedback appreciated

        Cheers

As the years pass by clean sheets are becoming harder and harder to predict for any team at any level.

Would you even be surprised if Man Utd conceded a goal in each of their first ten prem games next season?...or if we suddenly discover fortress Selhurst Park....I wouldn't...

The manager said they should be fine for training tomorrow.

Guys time is running out and madness keeps growing

        Front 5:
        Neymar 11.5 - Lukaku 8.5 - Werner 7.5
        Modric 7 - Kroos 6 - Cuadrado 7 - Carrasco 7 - Paulinho 5.5

If I change Neymar 11.5 to Jesus 8.5 I can get:

        A) Get James 9.5 instead of Modric 7, Cuadrado 7 or Carrasco 7
        B) Get Eriksen 9 instead of Modric 7, Cuadrado 7, Carrasco 7 or Kroos 6
        C) Get David Silva 8.5 / Isco 8 and Perisic 8.5 instead of Cuadrado 7 /Carrasco 7 and Modric 7
        D) Something else

Assuming the scoring is the same A or B looks good. Don't like Modric or Kroos as fantasy players.

Same plus 1 point at each 5 recovered balls, 1 point at each 2 shots on target, 1 point at 2 blocked shots.
Modric on set pieces and Kroos on set pieces

Maybe B with Eriksen over Modric then? Eriksen offers much more attacking threat and is also on set pieces.

Who do you think will succeed in their group? Both? Or a Peruvian or Nigerian surprise?

At a guess, I would say France and Peru qualify from Group C and Argentina and Croatia from Group D. I do think Denmark will score more goals than Croatia in the group stages though, irrespective of that prediction. How do you think those groups pan out?

C - France and Peru/Denmark (probably both with 4 points)
D - One of the most difficult predictions for me, Argentina can be a huge upset, I predict a lot of draws in this group with few goals

I agree with your Group D assessment. Only predicting Argentina solely because of Messi, but reckon it's probably the group with the most evenly matched teams.

Southgate has given him the number one shirt. I'd say very nailed.

This board in pro cavani. If you check their league stats, lewa is superior and have his entire team feeding him. And cavani does not have pens to his name. If lewa wasn't playing on the last matchday, he is definitely the better pick. At current situation, both are good picks depending on how you set your team up

I already have Suarez but a double Uruguay during the group stages sounds tasty to me. Lukaku is my other striker

Do not go both Suarez and cavani. Egypt defence is not soft and Uruguay is not a team that blows opponent out
