Colombia’s affordable World Cup Fantasy assets could prove effective investments in a favourable Group H.

Los Cafeteros are still considered something of a work in progress but opponents such as Senegal and Japan underpin their Fantasy appeal.

We’ve got everything you need to know about Group H’s South American representatives.

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

At back-to-back World Cups for the first time in two decades, Colombia are unlikely to put on a repeat performance of their journey to the quarter-finals four years ago. And even if they do, it will be more of a gutsy slog than the exciting free-flowing football they treated us to in Brazil. Capable of attacking brilliance they are also vulnerable in defence, conceding 19 en route to Russia.

Los Cafeteros qualified by finishing fourth in South America’s round-robin league, just about dragging themselves over the line with a final day draw in Peru. Despite having some talented players in their squad, it was guts and grit that made the difference in the end as coach Jose Pekerman, the nation’s longest-serving manager, has had several issues to deal with of late.

The chief of those is then fact that his key players haven’t nailed down starting positions at their clubs, most notably James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado and Radamel Falcao. If even one of them has a poor game, the rest of the squad is still at a level where it affects the overall performance. Boiled down, Colombia have become far too reliant on Rodriguez to win games on his own. It’s something he is capable of occasionally but such dependence on him has proven unhealthy.

At the other end of the pitch, David Ospina has been in awful form since the end of qualifying. With his confidence already damaged by those performances, and a lack of real game-time at Arsenal, he committed another embarrassing error in a recent friendly against France.

However, there have been some encouraging signs. The aforementioned trip to France may have started poorly but Los Cafeteros were able to come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. It was also a match where coach Pekerman saw the benefits of using two forwards instead of his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, which had been losing popularity back home. That has been viewed as positive progress.

More importantly, Colombia have been handed a favourable draw with Poland looking like the only side to pose a real danger. Progression from Group H seems likely but a second round match likely against either Belgium or England doesn’t hold much hope.

Colombia are well known for struggling to perform against established international powers. It was said four years ago that “the worst Brazil side in history was still too good for Colombia’s best ever.” Indeed that trend continued in qualifying, with four of their five defeats coming against either Brazil, Argentina or Uruguay.

CONMEBOL QUALIFYING

Most starts: David Ospina (18), Carlos Sanchez (15), Santiago Arias, Juan Cuadrado, James Rodriguez (all 13).

Most goals: James Rodriguez (6), Carlos Bacca, Edwin Cardona (both 3), Radamel Falcao (2).

Most assists: James Rodriguez (4), Bacca, Cuadrado (both 3).

THE KEY TARGETS

Even though he has struggled to live up to his potential in Europe’s big leagues since the last World Cup, James Rodriguez (£9.0m) is still the go-to Fantasy asset for Colombia. In fact, the conditions have been set to help him try to improve on his 2014 showing now that he has been relieved of defensive duties and handed a more free-roaming role in the side. None of his team-mates scored more (six) or registered as many assists (four) during qualifying as the 26-year-old, who was involved in 48 percent of Los Cafeteros’ goals. Unlike many attacking midfielders, Rodriguez has managed to avoid being classified as a forward by McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy, giving him the edge over those who have been shifted to the forwards department.

Having rediscovered his form at Monaco after a disastrous two-year spell in England, Radamel Falcao (£8.5m) will be eager to impress on his World Cup debut. The 32-year-old, Colombia’s all-time leading scorer, missed out on Brazil’s finals through injury but is once again a regular in the side. Falcao started just five qualifying matches and was still able to contribute two goals and an assist. Since then he has featured from the beginning in three of the last five friendlies, adding another strike. Perhaps Falcao’s greatest appeal is his club form, though. The former Manchester United and Chelsea forward is very much back to his best, having fired in 18 goals and providing four assists in 25 Ligue 1 appearances this season, with three Champions League goals too.

THE LONG SHOTS

One of Colombia’s best performers in Brazil was Juventus winger Juan Cuadrado (£8.0m), who could prove important once again. The 29-year-old started 13 qualifying matches and contributed a goal and three assists. However, he has played just 45 minutes for his country since passage to Russia was booked after he suffered a hernia in December.

Carlos Bacca (£8.0m) is another attacking player capable of Fantasy returns when trusted with a place in the starting line-up. In 10 qualifying starts up front the AC Milan man scored three goals and was the provider for three more. However, since Falcao’s return to form, Bacca has only started two friendly matches.

Finally settled on a team - and it's essentially the same one I had 4 days ago...
Here's a run through of why, and a few questions at the end.

Muslera - two great games in a very strong defense
Uzoho - 4m keeper, plays Iceland in week 2

Danilo - A bargain at 5.5m in a very strong defence with nice enough fixtures
Meunier - That's an obvious one
Akanji - 4.5 in a very strong defense, playing Serbia gw2 and could keep out Brazil
Dalsgaard - creative threat and clean sheet potential in either of his games
Varela - see Muslera, also 4.5m

James - Everything in the team goes through him, including all set pieces, playing two defensively weak sides.
Eriksen - same as above, except more goes through him with slightly harder games
Ziyach - on all set pieces, brilliant player, plays Iran first week and a poor Portugal in gw2.
Carrasco - nailed on in a team that could score 4+ in gw1 or 2. The best of a poor bunch of options here
Al-Dawsari - attacking threat, easy first game, best 5m mid

Lukaku - Brilliant goalscoring record in an attacking team with two easy first games
    Cavani - see above
Werner - the main striker and goalscoring threat in a Germany side that always scores and has some nice games

1 question - with Varela as well, Pickford or Muslera?

    Thoughts?

No Brazil or France attack not a worry?

France attack doesn't worry me at all because being honest I don't think they're very good, and by the time we find out in GW1 if they are or not all their nice games are over. Brazil maybe slightly more, but I think they'll share goals more than anything and Jesus, the only one that has tempted me, isn't as good an option for the first two games as my current three 🙂

Ljajic ran the show in the 5-1 win. Don't think he'll be anywhere close to being dropped from the team.

That was against Bolivia, in a friendly. This is big boy football now, and the new coach has been brought in with the priority of getting the best out of SMS. The old coach was sacked almost only because he didn't get on with SMS. This guy is seen as the best thing since sliced bread in Serbia, and if Ljajic has one bad game he's out on his arse.

                    Fair enough regarding friendly.

Ljajic is only needed for two games if a person wildcards before GW 3. I think the rotation risk surrounding him is slightly exaggerated.

Thanks haha - looking forward to it! The pavard pick I'm just avoiding because as I've said I don't think this France side are great and he's not nailed from there. Mojica has been in and out of my side - but Akanji having the better gw2 game has swung it for me.

I agree with just about everything here. I am in a similar spot for those decisions too. I prefer Muslera because a GK fail would feel less personal!

The only ways I differ, are up top. do you not fancy Lewandowski, most goals in qualification? or Neymar, for man of the tournament?

      1. FFFrog

I agree with your Muslera point. I can understand the Lewa hype but he has that before every major tournament and hasn't produced yet, and his first two games aren't the easiest. Neymar also a nice prospect but as I've been the biggest advocate on here to not have a 12m player he's not going in 😉

They are all good arguments but there are lots of other players you could argue to have in. It’s hard but best of luck.

Great Team...maybe double up with Godin along with varela...

    11. AndyCook
      8 years, 2 months ago

I think I would still have Muslera by the way. I think each player needs to be chosen on their own merit except if you have attacking and defending players from opposing teams. Would Suarez interest you more than Cavani if he priced in the same? Or do you genuinely believe Cavani is a nicer option

      1. FFFrog

If priced the same I'd almost be tempted to avoid them simply because I know I'd pick the wrong one. It really is too close between them to call, so I'm going with the cheaper one, who's also got a better recent scoring record.

        1. AndyCook
          8 years, 2 months ago

It’s the one team where you can pick the wrong one and it’s making me want to avoid them bizarrely.

I agree - also a feeling I've had. However in the last 3 games they've each got two goals, and against Wales Cavani scored and Suarez didn't, so I'm saving the million and praying.

I also think you might get better value from 4.5m GK + Tripper than you would from 5.5m GK + Akanji because I don't see them keeping a CS against Brazil and GKs can get 3-4 points even without the CS, which is solid enough.

Akanji over Pavard for the next two? I disagree with Carrasco over Ljajic too, the latter is nailed with his current form. Aldawsari over Meza is questionable, but there is admittedly a difference in price.

Carrasco has two nice games, Ljajic questionably doesn't even have one - Costa Rica always surprise and Switzerland are just so solid at the back. I really don't get the Meza pick - he's not a great player, playing a solid Croatia team gw2, with nothing to suggest he's got any attacking threat.

I've spent the last two weeks meticulously researching every team and virtually every player in the competition. He's replacing the West Ham CAM who had been pushed out to the wing, he's neither a goalscorer nor an assister and this Argentina team are not good. Just avoid.

Pickford is better for your team as he plays after Uzoho and you have varela.

Cavani hasn't got good scoring for Uruguay in last 5 games I think. Suarez has the hotter hand.

Similar team but going for ljajic and trying to squeeze neymar in especially Vs CRC. I think navas is an under average gk and he'll be exposed. Thanks for your thoughts for the past few days

Can I get some opinions on team structure and value balance please?

Are you going for as many big hitters as you can fit? the sacrifice is worth it....
Maybe you have gone for balance, and tried to get in 15 players that all start, and all have a chance of points, but no big hitters?
have you chosen one £12million guy and made a couple of sacrifices to fit?
spent high in defence, midfield, attack?

would love to hear your thoughts and your reasons.
ps. 20 hours to go and then we get football everyday for a month!

    1. AndyCook
      8 years, 2 months ago

12 million doesn’t represent as good value in this game especially in the group as you can move the captains armband and unless your 12 million player plays early he may never even get the armband! I think you should have as many big hitters as can be afforded without having to get in any players that have next to no probability of getting more than two points. The set-up makes this more about value within the budget than any other game I have ever seen. I think sticking to forwards 10 million and under and defenders 5.5 million and under is a good strategy (except possibly Meunier) in a search for value.

I think Lukaku is the Belgian to have. Alisson costs a lot and Ramos is not a popular pick. Danilo over Marcelo to save money. Matuidi and Kante are not attacking enough, better to get attacking players from worse sides and free some of the money from defence to maybe get Lukaku and another decent mid.

That looks better. Mojica might not be nailed. Messi is a bit of a luxury. I would be tempted to do Mojica to Sabaly, Marcelo to Danilo, Alisson to Muslera and Ziyach to a 9 million pound player of your choice but that is personal preference and that team has no major issues.

Your defence is too strong, downgrade Alisson, Marcelo (Danilo for 1mil less?) or Ramos. Or maybe 2 of them. Your midfield hurts my eyes... Casemiro - too defensive, Asensio - will only play last 30 mins, Aldaswari - solid pick, Matuidi - theres better options, Kante - CDM's are rubbish in fantasy football, offer no points threat. You need a few people like Mueller, Eriksen, JRod, Ziyach, Ljajic, carrasco to name a few. Good luck my friend.

Hey guys, so I wonder if any of you have tried to recreate a World Cup Draft format team of your own with your friends.
I just finished a WC Draft with 3 others, and I'd love to hear how you'd rank the 4 squads. The competition for picks and fitting within budget makes it a lot more interesting, I found. I won't initially reveal which one of these is mine, but I can tell you I was rather disappointed I was pick 3, but then I was quite surprised with the others initial picks

Which team would you pick out of these 4:

    Team 1:
    Muslera,
    Danilo, Trippier, Mojica
    Cueva, Eriksen, Ziyech, Aldawsari
    Jesus, Messi, Lukaku
    (s) Vukovic, JRod, Sabaly, Mojica

    Team 2:
    Caballero,
    Varela, Kimmich, Meunier
    Kouyate, C Sanchez(URU), Modric, Oezil,
    Cavani, Mbappe, Neymar
    (s) Nakamura, Spajic, Ebuehi, Ndidi

    Team 3:
    Sommer,
    Mendy, Rose, D. Sanchez, Gimenez
    Isco, Coutinho, Carrasco
    Ronaldo, Dembele, Sterling
    (s) Gomis, Casemiro, Bednarek, Harit

    Team 4:
    Lloris
    Hakimi, Cahill, Marcelo
    Ljajic, B Silva, Asensio, Mueller
    Griezmann, Suarez, Werner
    (s) Uzoho, Hegazy, Lovren, Ndiaye

2 has missed the point that there is lots of good defensive options and few good midfielders. I rate team 1 the best then 4 then 2 and 3 are both woeful.

If I want Griezmann in, it means taking out Werner and getting rid of Carrasco on my midfield for a crappy 6 or lower mid.

I'm afraid the French will share the offensive production more than other teams.

Would not go with any Spanish player for GW1. Might not even go with any for the whole tournament. Lopetegui (their coach) just got sacked for announcing he would be coaching madrid after world cup. Hierro (the new coach) might turn out well, but it's highly likely it won't. Plus Morroco and Iran are good teams, and Spain's last friendlies have not been promising. You would need to see how they play vs Portugal... Still, I would just go for Ziyach and spread the money elsewhere instead of holding it.
