Midfielder Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) was the Fantasy star of the show as Russia thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening World Cup fixture.

He scored the fifth and final goal for the hosts as they registered their first win in eight matches, assisting another two of his nation’s strikes for a 13 point haul.

Substitute Denis Cheryshev (£5.5m) was not far behind Golovin in the match, scoring twice and amassing 12 points.

Budget option Yuri Gazinskiy (£4.5m) opened the scoring in the 12th minute, heading past Al-Maiouf from Golovin’s cross in the aftermath of a set-piece.

It should come as no surprised that Russia took the lead in the air against the shortest side at this summer’s World Cup.

That vulnerability furthers the appeal of Uruguay defender Diego Godin (£5.5m), a great threat from set-pieces, who scored four goals in World Cup qualifying.

Indeed, Oscar Tabarez’s side netted more goals from set-plays in qualifying than any other nation from South America or Europe.

The likes of Mohamed Salah (£8.5m), Luis Suarez (£10.5m) and Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) will all likely be looked at as options for later Group Stage rounds accordingly.

There was disappointment for Alan Dzagoev (£7.0m), selected by two percent of World Cup Fantasy managers, who was forced off with a hamstring injury in the 24th minute.

His replacement, Cheryshev, was the scorer of the second goal after Russia successfully mounted a breakaway attack in the 43rd minute.

Roman Zobnin (£5.5m) fed the substitute, whose excellent first-touch took him past two defenders allowing him to slam the ball high into the net unchallenged.

Alexandr Samedov (£7.5m), involved in 11 goals during Russia’s 20 matches in the build-up to the tournament, look bright but was substituted in the 64th minute with just playing and clean sheet points to his name.

Next to leave the field for Russia was Fedor Smolov (£8.0m) in the 71st minute. Artem Dzyuba (£8.0m) was the man who came on for him, scoring with his first touch of the match – a header from another Golovin cross.

Cheryshev scored his second late-on after a knock-down from Dyzuba was rifled into the net from outside the box.

After being fouled on the edge of the box in stoppage time, Golovin, who had been booked minutes before, took the free-kick placing it perfectly to Al-Maiouf’s left to cap off a memorable victory for the hosts.

With a fixture against Egypt up next, Golovin and Cheryshev may soak up some transfer activity in the coming days.

TEAMS

RUSSIA (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov; Gazinskiy, Zobnin, Golovin, Dzagoev (Cheryshev 28’), Samedov (Kuzyayev 64’); Smolov (Dzyuba 70’).

Brilliant. My World Cup is over after 1 game.

I was going to invest heavily in Russian players in TFF until I saw this:

He's just linked a post in which someone had given factual data to imply Saudi Arabia would definitely score against Russia because Russia struggled to keep a clean sheet recently and Saudi Arabia have been scoring a lot.

It's not definitive. To moan about it on a forum is bizarre. He basically put no thought into his decision because he allowed himself to be influenced by a solitary post, enough so that he felt the need to save it and link it in a post made after the fact.

                Cringeworthy.

Aye I have no doubt that post swayed his decision. It's just that it was a decision that had more to it than the normal "A or B?" posts. Those are the kind of posts where someone is making decisions for you.

In this case it was a decision he made based on some factual information, not one where someone just told him what to do.

Lewis: People want leadership. And in the absence of genuine leadership, they will listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership, Mr. President. They’re so thirsty for it, they’ll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there’s no water, they’ll drink the sand.

Sheperd: Lewis, we’ve had Presidents who were beloved, who couldn’t find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don’t drink the sand because they’re thirsty, Lewis. They drink it because they don’t know the difference.

Planned to use BB1 and WC after that
But when I saw my team for next round I'm in doubt

          Current team for next round:

          Muslera(ksb)
          Varela(ksb) danilo(crc) meunier(tun) pavard(per)
          James(pol) eriksen(aus) nandez(ksb)
          Lukaku(tun) mertens(ksb) mbappe(per)
          Sub: pickford trippier meza ljajic

If I use WC I will have these:
          Muslera uzoho
          Danilo guerrero carvajal varela kimmich
          Paulinho mueller nanez meza cherysev
          Mbappe neymar griezz

Why would you want to double up on French forwards for next round? Peru are a good side especially defensively and France haven't looked very good in the leadup to this tournament.

Meanwhile, Uruguay with two of the best strikers in the world are playing against Saudi Arabia who got thumped by a poor Russia side.

Uruguay is a good team but in midfield they are weak

One of the best teams on paper. Really doubt Deschamps has figured out a way to get them firing. Uruguay in the other hand have improved over the last twelve months. Arguably their striker pairing is better and plays well together than France’s.

          Rotation Pairs

I haven't seen this anywhere yet so i've done it myself. The rotation Pairs for the 18/19 season look to be as follows:

          Man City & Man Utd
          Arsenal & Tottenham
          Liverpool & Everton
          Fulham & Chelsea
          Bournemouth & Palace
          Watford & Cardiff
          Huddersfield & Burnley
          Newcastle & Brighton
          Southampton & West Ham
          Wolves & Leicester

You shouldn't consider top teams in rotation pairs. No way you should have DDG/Ederson as your gks for example. Or bench a Chelsea def away to Tot and play a Fulham def at home etc

I know local teams can't have home games the same weekend. But why is he posting it? The big team are not suitable when it to rotating.

No way you are benching big ticket assets on a consistant basis

I'm posting it because every team has a "rotation pair". Ignore the fact that we use it for FPL for a second and you'll see i'm just giving information about the fixtures. The fact you're looking at it for an FPL perspective means yes you can ignore some of the pairings.

Yeah, sorry this is rotation pairs in terms of HOME/AWAY, ie one of the 2 teams will be at home and the other Away for all 38 Gameweeks.

In terms of rotation pairs for fixture difficulty, i notice that the pairing of Newcastle with Palace and the pairing of Leicester with Southampton go the entire season without both teams playing a top 6 side on the same weekend.

I'm surprised that more people on here aren't playing Telegraph World Cup.

26 transfers during the group stages.

At least a dozen strategies on how to use them.

It's so difficult - it really is the perfect game for the elite fantasy football manager.

Speaking as someone who devised the anti-template alternative chips strategy last season, this is at least 10 times harder than FPL. There are so many ways to play the game and I've no idea which way is best.

No it isn't. Pick 11 players from first half of group games. Roll your 26 subs in throughout the three rounds. Wildcard. Same again with 20 transfers for 4 rounds. No captain or chips. Explain how that is '10' times harder than FPL?

That's just 1 strategy of at least 12.

The difficulty is in knowing which strategy will work best and return the most points.

Answer my question. '10' times? FPL is a long game. Plenty of strategies.

It's the openness of the game that makes the strategy element 10 times harder. All the restrictions and annoyances of FPL have been removed. All the freedom gives you endless possibilities which makes the game much harder.

It literally could be a full time job with all the planning you could do. They remove all of the restrictions from FPL - no cap on players from the same team, loads of transfers, seeing the line ups before making transfers - and completely open everything up. The trouble is all this freedom and openness make the game so difficult to play.

I'm playing - the season long game is good too. 25th this year after falling away a bit at the end.

The season long one is all about the long term, and this is about chasing the clean sheets and to a lesser extent goals.

There is still time to join though - only missed out on the Russia game.

I used to play TFF too before switching to FPL. It's like they set up the whole game to rectify the most annoying things about FPL.

              25th? Wow - that's incredible!!

Agree but with planning not too difficult. I have mapped out plan for the 26 transfers so not spending much time in game but the best laid schemes ...... gang aft agley.......

I'm personally looking at defensive blocks and the obvious concentration, in the main, on players playing first to get the extra fixtures.

In my experience defensive players are relatively cheap per points obtained, especially in the short games. The best get alot of clean sheets and they are often easier to predict than individual hauls.

                  Nice.

I'm trying to switch between the big hitters in attack for their plum fixtures, constantly doing the Hokey Cokey with them.

I toyed with the idea of targeting teams who played their 3rd game after teams in groups A, B, C have finished their groups. It gets you a 4th game in the group stages out of your players.

Gone for block of France and Uruguay defence for good fixtures in games 1and 2 of round one and will then transfer to Spain and Brazil defence for their games 2 and 3 in round one. That will leave me 22 transfers in round one to do something like Griezman to Messi to Neymar to Kane to Lewandowski and also Pogba/Di Maria to Eriksen to Muller to Hazard to James Rodriguez in game 1. That will then leave 14 more transfers for me to use in games 2 and 3 of round one. That’s the plan anyway but who knows......

I didn't take offence at Deulofail's post - I have a lot of time for the guy and think he is a credit to the community.

But I do agree that mental health is a serious matter and shouldn't be made light of.

This is why I'm really dismayed that Jarvish is allowed to continue using his grav picture. I wish FFS would take a stand on this as well.

I don't really see the issue with Jarvish's grav

But I do think as a site mostly visited by youngish males (I would think) that some conversation about mental health can only be a good thing that should not be shied away from.

There is a huge amount of young men suffering from depression and other issues out there and many of them are the kind who like to shut themselves away with computers and statistics like we do here.

It happens. I have had quite a few friends with issues. There is help out there and it can help.

I couldn't agree more with you. It's a silent killer amongst young British men who are taught that it is not masculine to talk about your feelings.

Steve Smith is at his lowest ebb and on the verge of a breakdown in that picture and the grav is mocking this. It should be removed.

Totally agree, Cheese. The only reason to mod would be if the language of a touchy subject is used derogatively. If we allow people to talk without fear of reprisal, we won't have the situation he have today where half of us are PC police and the other half are PC-hating-Free Speechers. It's usually quite clear when someone uses a word to mean something bad; mod it. If the word is cut completely from discouse, then it's detrimental to the plight.

+1 Cheers Virg. I think the definition of delusion shouldn't offend anyone. If we can all agree that we all have mental health, then we needn't be so touchy about pathology. Life itself is a pathology, and we're all living a different version of the illness. 😉

He was foolish. He knew there would be consequences if he was caught. There was a lot of overreaction considering it's common enough in baseball. But possibly he's had underlying mental health issues if he's this low and the Australian media coverage has set him lower.

I don't have a source/link for this at the moment, but according to a Belgian mate there's some talk of Chadli getting the nod over Meunier. Nothing more than rumours at the moment

I think the difference with Berbs was that he just posted the team and said "thank me later" - at least here there is an acknowledgement of source and their potential unreliability.

Probably. I don't care much, either way, the posts which get deleted almost seem to happen at random or on who the mod on at the time likes most wins anyway.

I do think moderation can be quite variable dependent on who is on the scene... I got a post with "p*ssed" in made green 😉

For sure. It seems pretty random a lot of the time.

The post in question is a nothing for example, it seems ridiculous that posts similar to it have been modded in the past at all

I can see why you say that - and maybe I shouldn't have posted.

I wasn't involved in all that, but I guess the major difference here is I'm not claiming he's not starting.. Just that there's some talk/rumours about it.

You may turn out to be right. I say leave it on here. Meunier has started 2 fewer games than the really nailed on defenders in qualifying so there may be something to it.

Nothing to suggest so based on recent friendlies though, and I can't find anything on it myself.

We'll see. I own Meunier myself and hope it isn't true. Just thought it was worth putting out there.

Yeah. He's a popular player and he's in my plans too. Only starting 8 times when Vertonghen starts 10 makes me a tad nervous, thou.

The topic was discussed in a World Cup talk show by analyst Degryse: https://sporza.be/nl/2018/06/14/degryse-meunier-heeft-in-3-matchen-geen-goeie-voorzet-gegeven/

Meunier was really underperforming last friendlies. His crossing was dreadful and Chadli"s first cross resulted in a goal. That's why it's discussed...

Some people called it a "groundbreaking" strategy. I revived a lot of praise in the FPL community on Twitter for not following the dull as dishwater gameweek 32 Wildcard template with Son Mahrez Willian Goss et al in midfield.

Punt on Mo. Neither will get massive points and you can switch for 4 game Saturday if it goes wrong. Cavani has Suarez to split his tally. Salah has no-one.

Good make-up! Haha. I would have liked a few more African players for the fun of it to be honest. African teams often have a lot of talent yet unpredicatibility about how they will perform as a unit, I feel. That makes them exciting to watch, but perhaps they were a bit overpriced for me in general

Apologies if I'm asking the bleeding obvious here, but I haven't spent much time looking at the McDonald's league format and rules until today. It would appear that we are able to change the captain at the end of each matchday during a given round, subject to the new captain having not played yet.

Is this correct? Effectively meaning that, as an example, I should look to have a Spanish captain tomorrow who will possibly be replaced by a French captain the day after and a Brazilian captain the day after that etc.....the one I choose to stick with then being the guy who gets double points at the end of the round.

I think I'm correct with the summary above, but would appreciate clarification if I've got it horribly wrong.

Same rule for subs as for captain. If your player doesn't perform to your liing, you can sub them out manually for a player who is yet to play. You can do this daily, as with the captaincy, but not between matches on a single day.

Mine was simple I couldn’t decide who to captain and have 4 or 5 great options and the higher scores are generally in the group stages, games will be tighter later on in tournament and closer to call

Nah that's not right though. Was exactly my thoughts. But chances are much higher you will get it wrong later on than the 5/6 goes you have at it now. You captain Jesus in a semi or final for instance, but your goalie gets a penalty save and a clean sheet. Anybody playing max cap then will kill you

Smalling and De Gea play in different positions. The only reason I see to choose between them (a decision based on cover) is if you think you might run out of United slots (which is unlikely to be a problem, but we'll see).

Smalling can score goals as well as get clean sheets. DeGea can't.

That was pure luck in my honest opinion. Smalling, the guy who scored 8 goals in 164 apps goes on to score 3 goals in that short span of time.. meh. A case could still be made for DeGea even if priced at 6.0 which is unlikely(?), we'll see

4 goals from set pieces moves away from being entirely down to luck.

Disclaimer. That may not be a real restaurant

Question... If one of your bench players plays and gets a bunch of points can you bring him on for a player who hasn't played yet and thus get your bench players points? Or do you need to bring him on before he actually plays..?

the latter; you must bring him on before he plays.

Ok That's what I thought. There is an above post at the start of this page that seems to have that backwards. That's why I asked. Thank you.

No, you have to bring him on before.

Nope. Bring on before plays - that why your bench should be the people who play latest
