World Cup Fantasy managers will have to respond quickly to the emerging trends in Russia, as they prepare their transfers ahead of the Gameround 2 deadline on Tuesday.

We’ve taken our first look at the Opta World Cup data, which is exclusively available to members after the completion of each match.

Our analysis covers all fixtures contested in Groups A-F, with a scrutiny of Group G and H to follow before the second set of group matches commence.

Not surprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.0m) has been at the heart of the transfer market in recent days following his 16-point haul in Portugal’s opening fixture: since Friday night, his ownership has doubled.

Elsewhere, there appears to be a strong case to load up on Uruguay players ahead of their match with Saudi Arabia, while the underlying statistics should provide some consolation to owners of Lionel Messi and Neymar following the £12.0m-rated forwards’ opening-match blanks.

To those tearing up their teams, destroying their defenses with wildcards or taking hits, here's something for you to consider. What have we really learnt from one round? Many were already advising us to buy big name players only (at least big for their teams), which may or may not be good advice, but how much has changed from one match regarding those big names?

Many of us have picked the wrong big names (for this round), and lament not only this, but the fact that we've had no decent squad players to fall back on. For some reason, this may have led many to the conclusion that they need either more big names or bigger names in their teams at the expense of the rest of the team. We see Ronaldo's name up in lights and we want a piece of the action. However, many had previously fantacised about Neymar and Messi's name up in lights pre-tournament, and we saw what happened there.

So how big is the risk of picking the wrong big name, and is it worth it? Here are the R1 scores for the most expensive players who've played so far:

    12.0
    NEYMAR: 2
    LIONEL MESSI: 0
    CRISTIANO RONALDO :16
    Average: 6

    11:0
    HARRY KANE: 10
    Average: ~10.0

    10.5
    LUIS SUAREZ: 2
    Average: between 1 and 3

    10.0
    ROMELU LUKAKU: 10
    KEVIN DE BRUYNE: 5
    EDEN HAZARD: 5
    ANTOINE GRIEZMANN: 8
    SERGIO AGUERO: 6
    Average: 6

    9.5
    TIMO WERNER: 2
    EDINSON CAVANI: 2
    THOMAS MUELLER: 1
    Average: 1.33

    9.0
    MESUT OEZIL: 2
    CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN: 6
    DIEGO COSTA: 10
    PAUL POGBA: 2
    PHILIPPE COUTINHO: 7
    ANGEL DI MARIA: 2
    GONZALO HIGUAIN: 1
    RAHEEM STERLING: 2
    ANDRE SILVA: 1
    OLIVIER GIROUD: 1
    TONI KROOS: 2
    DELE ALLI: 2
    KYLIAN MBAPPE: 2
    DAVID SILVA: 2
    DRIES MERTENS: 6
    GABRIEL JESUS: 2
    LUKA MODRIC: 8
    MARIO MANDZUKIC: 4
    Average: 3.44

In short, I am jealous of anyone with Ronaldo in their team and with him in their team from R2. But let's not act like he's guaranteed a haul!

Aside from that, we can see that the variance between players is huge (as you would expect from a single gameround), so the cost of picking the wrong player has been huge. This could cause the biggest communal kneejerk seen in fantasy history, as managers seek out more big names out of rage against the Casual Machine that outscored them this week, making it even harder for them to catch and destroy that machine from a lesser position. If the variance is so huge at the top, why throw even more money into it unless there is a change in information (e.g. actual form (not fantasy points) or fixtures)? The same could and will happen again. There are only 2 rounds before the free wildcard, so your choice big name won't have time to average out to match his expected outcome over time.

Now consider that the average 5.5m player got about 3pts, which is immense considering the amount of riffraff you would never select from that group of ~50 players. Is it really time to forgo the benefits of rolling subs and captaincy, simply because Ronaldo got a high score this week. I mean, if Golovin was playing today instead of opening day, his owners could be shouting from the rooftops about rolling captaincy being the most valuable mechanism of the game.

Personally, I'm going to continue with my plan (perhaps not even use a transfer), by stacking up with attacking defenders and keeping expenditure tight at the top end of the market. Sure, Mr Ronaldo would tempt me on a wildcard, but that wildcard could be much more valuable down the line, so there's no need to panic. Similarly, I think hits are unlikely to be worth it without a guarantee of a player not starting.

I'm pretty sure I still have 12 starting players between 5.5 and 9.0 (besides De Arrascaeta, perhaps), with Varela and the GKs the only players under that price point. Picking up a couple of clean sheets and attacking returns from the defence can really make for a strong foundation for your fantasy rounds, and relying on the points available here also allows you to rely less on the big hitters for points. I really wish I could have 6 or 7 defenders!

Of course, this post is bound to backfire when Idowu, Escobar, Ronaldo, Neymar and Messi all fire in the next round, but it's my point of view, and in theory, I think it has some merit.

Finally, let's consider also the fact that one round of fantasy points is a terrible predictor of fantasy points in a following round. Dullard's the way for now!

Cheers RD. I think it's hard to keep up with the world cup with matches every day and busy lives to lead. It can be all too easy to rely on fantasy output, match highlights and hearsay. Just wanted to provide some comfort to those who feel like the game is against them.

In reality, the fantsy output tells a different story. A good antidote is to go to Statistics > Top Scoring Players, and see the healthy mix of player prices getting 6pts+, and remember that the lack of a BPS makes 6 a respectable score 🙂

Sure, if you have the money already in your team structure, then go for it. The question of whether or not it's worth a hit (if you're taking a hit), is up for debate. The answer is more likely to be yes than it is for cheap players 🙂

      Great stuff.

I used BB this week so my score looks a bit better, but if Lukaku didn't perform I was going to be tempted. I have Lewa to play still and he was my backup so would have waited for him before pressing it.

The rolling captaincy is great and will (almost) guarantee we get some sort of captaincy score. I set my team up not wanting to WC early so I'm going to stick with that and reassess after the next round is nearly done

  2. The argument for a wildcard before Round 3

I know everyone on here is starting to think that WC before GW3 is a bad idea and you should use it before the QF. Here is my reasoning not to, and to use it before GW3:

1 - Those teams that get their first 2 wins, and are sitting favorable in their group are more likely to rest their star players meaning you could have a complete benched starting 11.

2 - In GW3 you know exactly who needs to go balls out, and who has a favorable matchup. Say Egypt for example: if they win/tie GW2 then you know Salah will be very hungry against the Saudi’s and will want him on your squad for sure. You can load up on those teams needing a win playing weak opponents for some huge scores.

3 - There is never a guarantee to points, even in the QF. Most likely the games will be tighter, less scoring, more tactical because mistakes are more critical. In GW3 teams will be firing, counter attacking, doing whatever it takes to make it to the knockout stages.

Overall, I think there will be more points up for grabs in GW3 vs QF. Games at 3-2 vs 2-1. Teams against weaker opponents, with not necessarily a lose and go Home scenario.

My thoughts :). Hope this helps those who can’t make their decision.

Thanks Bard, you have me wondering about whether I should save it for Knockouts or not again now. It's quite an important decision for the game, and I'll reasses once we have more info from R2. I think for now, we can try to make decisions that could be good for either scenario. Nice post 🙂

I'm not sure what most here think but GW3 is perfect for WC. One thing which is also a plus is that it also allows you to build my team for just 2 rounds instead of the entire group stage, but it's too late for that now.

      1. Bardo9
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

I also like that you can gain a huge point lead from WC GW3. Then taken a 4 point hit down the road (if necessary) doesn’t sting as bad.

Arguments for both are valid, I understand why you would do it before QF too. Both make sense, just will be up to the manager to decide what they want to do.

        Personally > GW3

        Lots of lopsided matches:

        Egypt/Saudi
        Spain/Morocco
        Portugal/Iran
        Germany/Korea

        1. Deulofail
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

Doesn't matter when you earn you points, though 😉

The lopsided matches, among the other reasons you gave are quite convincing, but the stars need to align for them all to come true at once 🙂

Lots of other good cheap options too that weren't that viable before, could make for a decent BB.

Egypt, Switzerland def; Tunis keeper, Cueva, etc etc

I think GW2 is perfect for WC. Every game this round is virtually a must win for teams, as well as most games next round. Germany for example have to win this round and draw/win the next round depending on other results. Similar situation with Portugal, Spain, Brazil etc. I think by playing WC now you can stock up on players for the next two weeks and pick up a good haul in both rather than hoping for a good haul this week and going all out next week.

Good arguments there. One worry I have in that theory is what Deulofail said a couple of posts up:

You can’t possibly know who is in good form after just one game. Look at the players everyone picked for GW1 that failed miserably.

It’s a gamble seeing one game, then basing all of your next picks off it, especially with WC being such a valuable piece of the game.

            • 11 Years

I see some value in GW2 WC if you plan it early and only build a team for one round. Have I done that I'd probably have around 15 points more myself. However using it just because things didn't go well is a total waste.

Additionally we could see rotation in GW3 despite teams like Germany/Spain needing wins (not like they don't have a big enough squad), with only one FT to fix it.

          2. studge15

Agree with you. But are the chances that much higher that a person who hauled in GW1 and GW2 will haul again in GW3? Having someone for two weeks gives you two chances to hit big rather than one imo. WC in GW2 is much riskier than GW3 or QF. All depends how you want to play it because you can make an argument for each one.

    3. Eden Wizard

I think I would consider hit for James to Coutinho also if JRod an injury doubt and does not play tomorrow

Uruguay's Sanchez Carlos a good pick for the game against Saudi? If not who is a cheap mid from Uruguay

He didn't start the first one, Nandez but he's not that good. Maybe he's going to be benched.

    No Trippier assist 🙁

    How's my WC team looking?

    Kane - Suarez - Kaku
    Isco - JRod - Lingard - Layun - Inui
    Trippier - Meunier - Varela - Akanji - Sabaly
    Ochoa - Uzoho

      Cavani looked better than Suarez

I wildcarded (feedback above, please), because my original team had triple Brazil players, and England looked great today (playing Panama next), as well as Mexico yesterday and the Swiss defense. Also Spain vs. Iran should be a nice fixture.

Not sure yet, but you get unlimited transfers in next round, I think, and second game is the one teams tend to go for it in. Less likelihood of better players being rested, hauled off early etc?

I was always gonna WC Round 2.

Set my team up only for Round 1 and went well. By Round 2 we know teams line up and because many big teams drew know they will need 2 wins from final 2 games so little rotation.

Tough captain choice on my hands:
    A) Suarez vs Saudi Arabia. Looked poor first game but could easily sink his teeth (pun intended) into the team that were worst of the first round.
    B) Ronaldo vs Morocco. Loved having him for the hat-trick but feel he may have hit his ceiling already?

    Hmmmm.

If the teams who are 'free scoring' (for the want of better words) take 6 points from the next game, the WC in RD3 is going to have even more unpredictable results than this current RD2 incoming.

    Portugal look safe
    England look safe
    Belgium look safe
    France will be ok

Argentina need two good performances and all those teams who didnt get any points at all.

My long winded point is that next game is basically must win for everyone. RD3 leaves a few with rest opportunities, so strike now for WC or change your team to fringe players with WC after RD2 ends....

If I was Southgate I'd start TAA vs Panama. Trippier will be too tired if he plays all 3 games.
