After the all-too-swift turnaround between Gamerounds 1 and 2, Fantasy managers have some welcome breathing space before the third set of World Cup group fixtures get underway at 3pm on Monday.

With McDonald’s FIFA allowing unlimited transfers between the end of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds, this is a great opportunity for Fantasy managers to take a one-match punt on players with a favourable fixture in Gameround 3.

We’ve scanned through Opta’s World Cup data for the 16 Group A-D fixtures contested so far to see how the underlying statistics could influence Fantasy managers’ transfers ahead of the Gameround 3 deadline. Fantasy Football Scout users can do the same in the Members’ area, which is updated after the completion of each match.

Those playing McDonald’s FIFA have, unsurprisingly, acquired the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Denis Cheryshev and Diego Costa in their droves ahead of the final round of group fixtures, while Lionel Messi‘s ownership dwindles by the hour.

I haven’t heard this suggested at all. But there’s only four rounds of games in week 3 instead of 6. The same as last 16.

So could be a good round to max captain ?

Although I do appreciate QF, SF and final you get “one twist”.

The later in the tournament there is less chance for differentials.

      Qf for me

1 twist for 4 games where you'll probably have a lot of players in each game

It’s the differentials that tempt me before the template forms.

But yeah QF is clearly the best option for wildcard and then max captain.

Obviously in the end it’s pure luck. Some random dude binks a hattrick and you’re quids in.

There's an argument that R3 could be higher scoring with teams knowing targeting specific Pts or GD targets. I like QF (suggested above), SF or Final for potential differential value + even more limited days to twist. Teams will be set similarly and if the popular captaincy picks fail, then an unexpected differential return captain could be a massive boost.

        It’s a tough one.

Come the QF the squads we all have will be more similar as the player pool shrinks, budget rises and number of transfers we have rises allowing knee jerks for form players. So let’s say some random defender gets 20 points in week 3 you could truly gain 40 points on rivals. If that same score happened in the SF and you max captain more people may own that player meaning you only gain 20 points on rivals.

Food for thought. I’m truly torn and thinking of reasons for round 3!

This is a very good pt. It all comes down to getting advantage early or making it up later on. Something tells me the intro of these chips are meant to be better saved for later on but the returns and early advantage are very tempting.

but why would they score more? after all the teams need wins and points, not goals. after a goal the teams in need could try to shut the games down and just park the bus.

If I do my wildcard before the 3rd set of games, can I then do a bench boost? I know in FPL you can't do that but is this different?
If I can, it seems like the only chance to get 15 playing against inferior oppo.

I get that it’s an incredible feeling to score the winner. But why take your shirt off? Imagine being suspended for a semi final for example.

I think seeing what Gazza went through means I’m thinking logically.

But even in the heat of the moment there’s other ways to celebrate !

Well I doubt that’s his concern right now but it would be the shame for the tournament as a whole to have a teams main attacking threat suspended

        1. Deulofail
          • 9 Years

As much as I agree with what you're saying, I think it would be hilarious to see someone miss a big match because they took their shirt off in a previous game.

Footballers genuinely need training on celebrations. I think the excuse managers give is that they like to see the passion (unless they just don't want to publicly chastise their player), but there has to be some other way to release/express your feelings.

Perhaps they need to be wrapped in a transfarent film which they can rip off instead.

            • 13 Years

True they can only blame themselves.

The strange thing is, I remember being told the reason taking the shirt off was banned is due to the money sponsors pay the clubs and the goal celebration is the best time for it to be seen up close. Although in international football there are no sponsors ..

              • 9 Years
              7 years, 5 months ago

Ah yes I always thought that was the reason too. Never really thought about the WC non-sponsorship. If sponsorship is the reason, then I can only imagine that it's still an offence at the WC for the sake of consistency (maybe so we don't think too hard about the lame non-footballing reason itself - sponsorship).

Yeah I’d say it’s worth sticking.

You could move to someone like Costa and lose points as nobody seems essential and there’s so many good options.

Use the transfer to give you a deeper squad.

It would stop protests and players asking for VAR to be used. It works in cricket and tennis. If you waste it, you only have yourself to blame.

Because if it's 6, Kaku can match it with one goal. If it's 7, Kaku needs a goal and at least win a penalty to beat it. 2 returns instead of 1.

Exactly so you're kind of making my pt. If and that's a big if! he scores a goal he matches what you already had. If he does more than yes the returns are greater so say 2 goals make it 10 doubled you gain 8 fair enough.
But if he blanks you get only 2 4 doubles. That means you've now lost 8 pts
            Correct?

It totally depends on the main teams getting clean sheets and popular fantasy assets scoring.

I’d be surprised if the overall winner is on more than 500 at the end. That would be 70 x7. Pretty difficult, even with the chips.

I’d say if you get 60 for every round then you will finish high.

The manner in which VAR has been deployed this World Cup has really surprised me.

I genuinely thought this would be a major tournament too early for the system to give an acceptable account of itself, but I'm relieved that it's been virtually seamless.

The longer term benefits of this (eradication of despicable simulation etc.) will be a great positive for the game and the tension created is really quite engaging.

I'm beginning to think that the frankly laughable deployment during cup matches in England last season (Liverpool v WBA springs to mind) was intentional on the part of the FA/Referee body(?) to whip up public dismissal of the system as to 'take back' control for ref's.

The manner which the 'Ref' in each of the WC matches has had the final review and decision has been a real winner.

    High 5 VAR!

It needs tweaks but I’m glad we have it.

Never again will we have moments like lampards “goal” v Germany to make it 2-2. Or even moments like Rivaldo pretending a ball was kicked at his face.

I wonder if Beckham would have been sent off in 98 if they had VAR? Would Sol campbells winner in that same game have counted ?

The referee reviewed the pen in the Liverpool-WBA game by marching to the side of the Anfield pitch, viewing a monitor and then marching on and pointing to the spot. Just for some reason when it happens at the World Cup it doesn't seem to so alien or new age maybe because its on foreign soil!

Also VAR has been around a lot longer than when it was trialled in England has there been plenty of high profile mistakes. I was one of those people who accepted there'd be mistakes. Officials make subjective calls, VAR is just another layer of officiating.

What I cannot understand is the Kane and Mitra decisions...or lack of them. Surely things so blatant should be flagged for the ref's attention. Why wasn't the referee told to review those incidents? It took 5 seconds max for someone in Tonga to view the replays and make there mind up, but not in Russia....

The LIV-WBA match was ridiculous...from memory there was widespread confusion galore and minutes and minutes taken to make decisions

Agree re Kane and Mitro non-action. Albeit the latter Kane one was a little dubious (he had a good hold too!)

Do you have nobody at all after the Belgian players ?

I have Trippier so maybe feel like I have more of a safety net.

I would always twist on 5 you can easily gain that back and more with just a clean sheet, the upside is much greater than the loss in this case me thinks

His goals looked good. But let’s be realistic it was against Iceland. As organised as they can be, talent wise they are pretty poor and Nigeria are also poor.

The police duly spoke with Musa along with a couple of witnesses in the house and have since closed the matter with no further action whatsoever as there is no case to answer. No charges were brought against Musa or his wife.

    A) Twist (C) from Jesus to Lukaku, Muller, Meunier or Kimmich?

    B) When to use bench boost, GW3 WC+ Bench boost or use it after the group phase? Is it even viable considering BB after the gp cuz bench might be problematic.

    Yes/No game updated:

    http://tyroreports.wixsite.com/yesorno

    Just 1 question to go.

If the answer is YES (i.e. if Tunisia score against Belgium), Thes7s will be the outright winner.

If the answers is NO (i.e. Tunisia do not score against Belgium), Caldracula, MJM, Scratch, Shiva_Destroyer, Rafiki, Siva Mohan and Super Ray will all be tied going into the tiebreaker.

England are actually better off coming second in their group. Would most likely avoid Brazil, Germany, Spain/portugal, France & Argentina until final.

Broken world cup lol, gonna have one easy bracket and one impossibly difficult

1 easy bracket, 1 hard. Hosts on fire (could russia get to semi final?). Argentina on the ropes and probably out of groups.

        A lot like 2002 i'd say

When it comes to benching players in this game, would you be better off benching high % or low % owned players who didn't do well and would it make a difference to your rank?

      I was wrong.

      What ?

You play the players who play first and once your 11 is full you remove the lowest scorers first.

If two players have 1 remove midfielders first, strikers second and defenders last and then you’ll always have a valid formation.

Yes but see my lowest scorers are Cavani and Messi. I'm just wanting to know if it makes a difference to your rank on who you sub out

          Oh I see.

No people just seem to have the same rank if points are the same.

In that situation I’d remove Messi in protest for him wasting my cash.
