The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

Let’s not forget euro 16 where griezmann absolutely went off. 2 goals in the round of 16, 1 in the quarters, and 2 in the semis.

i had costa in my original draft but the fear of not owning someone to captain in day1 made me switch to mbappe that gives me mbappe modric or isco lukaku and kane as my captaincy options i feel a little happier about that

I'm in a state of shock.

Having fallen to 24k and laughing as Falcao (c) failed, Sassi got 0, Inui got 1 and my Tunisia keeper got benched... I logged on to finalise my BB last 16 team and I'm up to 8k again...

    I forgot I had Mina 🙂

I'm only really cross with myself about the keeper. Looking at the teams from Rd3, I still think WC was the right call, it was just the players I picked on it that were wrong!

But at 2:30 on Monday, I was minding 4 kids under 4 and I saw Golovin and Valera out so did a very quick WC and never considered that Egypt would swap keepers.

Pretty happy with this, feel free to tear it apart:

    Muslera
    Ramos Trippier Carvajal Lovren
    Modric(c2) Isco Quintero
    Messi(c1) Kane(c4) Hazard(c3)

    Bench: Subasic, Godin, Claesson, Inui

Plenty of penalty takers and players on set pieces. Can’t get over Argentina bias, which may end up being a differential move!

I wish that’s who we were playing. Yeah, I’ve generally picked a team to win and backed it. Seeing wins for Spain, Croatia, Sweden, Belgium, England. Other games are tough, I expect a penalty shootout between URU and POR after a 0-0 stalemate

Havent seen worst Argentina performance ever but who knows maybe they will win it.

People will not bet on them and thats good thing.

Have one combo bet Argentina champions and Lukaku top scorer odds 100 and another with Neymar odds 50 but thats harder.

Coutinho is a safe pick because he’s majorly owned. I don’t get the people shelling out for 2-3 Brazil players. That game is way too tough to call.

I’d get Coutinho if Modric and Isco didn’t have better fixtures

    Tweaked it:

    Olsen, (Ochoa/Schmeichel)
    Granqvist, Carvajal, Varela, Strinic, Lovren
    Isco, Lingard, Modric, Paulinho, Bentancur
    Griezmann, Suarez, Hazard

I know Varela is a doubt so I’ll check it before first match. Anything I did wrong?

You might wanna select only 1 of griez and Suarez. They both play on Day 1

Thoughts on going with both Granqvist & R.Rod. Was thinking whoever gets knocked out I can replace with Lovren / Maguire. I'd imagine a good chance at least one of them will make it through.

How would you rate this fine lot?

    Allison Fodder
    Carvajal Pique Rodri Granqvist Mojica
    Ericksen Cout Iniesta Quintero Inui
    Griez Neymar Kaku

Captain: Griez -> Iniesta -> Neymar -> Rodri

Spain defence has been Shite. What prompts the double up?

I expect Spain to get their act together & hold off Russia from scoring. Problem is I have used my WC so I also need to play safe - could have gone Godin but worried they might nick one during extra time.

I know I'm in the minority here but I'm going with Ericksen. He plays further forward than Modric and usually scores/assists more goals. Having said that, Croatia are the form team.

Same - given that I've saved my wildcard, I think I'm prepared to take a gamble on Eriksen and then transfer him out when they inevitably lose. (in whichever round that may be)

Pretty happy with my BB team. Please rate

    Muslera • Sommer
    Trippier • Carvajal • Miranda • Lovren • Granqvist
    Coutinho • Modric • Isco • Quintero • Claesson
    Kane • Lukaku • Mbappe

    Any feedback appreciated

Ps- I don’t have WC remaining
