Russia entertain Spain in today’s first last-16 tie, which kicks off at 3pm in Moscow.

The hosts’ excellent start to the tournament, in which they scored eight goals in their first two matches, was halted by a 3-0 defeat to Uruguay in their final group fixture.

Now they face the unenviable task of having to overcome Spain if they are to progress to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union.

The Spanish were far from convincing in the group stage, though. No team who qualified for the knockout rounds conceded more goals than Fernando Hierro’s side and the 2010 World Cup winners had to rely on an Iago Aspas stoppage-time strike to rescue a 2-2 draw against already-eliminated Morocco in their final group match.

Fantasy managers have backed Spain heavily, however, with Isco (£8.5m) the most-owned player on show this afternoon. The Real Madrid midfielder, who has had more touches in the opposition half (323) and final third (207) than any other player at the World Cup, has been selected by 34.9% of Fantasy managers.

Diego Costa (£9.1m) and Sergio Ramos (£6.5m) have also both been selected by over 20% of those who are playing McDonald’s FIFA, while David de Gea (£6.5m) and Dani Carvajal (£5.5m) – replaced by Nacho (£5.5m) in Fernando Hierro’s starting XI today – are the other two Spanish players to have double-digit ownerships.

An own-goal from Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m) in the defeat to Uruguay, coupled with no attacking returns and an early tactical substitution, has no doubt contributed to the three-goal Russian midfielder losing his place in well over 190,000 managers’ Fantasy teams.

Cheryshev, who hadn’t scored for the national team before the start of the World Cup, is the most-owned player in this Russian squad but is omitted from coach Stanislav Cherchesov’s starting XI today.

Budget midfielder Yury Gazinsky (£4.5m), who also starts on the bench, is the only other Russian player with an ownership of more than 10%.

Spain XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Nacho, Pique, Ramos, Alba; Busquets, Koke; Asensio, Isco; Silva; Diego Costa

Russia XI (5-4-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kudryashov, Kutepov, Ignasevich, Zhirkov; Samedov, Kuzyaev, Golovin, Zobnin; Dzyuba

Tough one. It's not intentional but it's going towards the goal. Very harsh yellow but I think he has to give the pen.

His hand goes down and then back up. Why is he doing that if it isn't to block the shot?

It was involve in a way. Perhaps the ref wouldn't have made the call if he didn't know that VAR would double check it. So it could have had a helping hand in justice being served.

If that was Joe Hart he would be slaughtered. But because it is De Gea noone is talking. As I have said before, England GKs are not that bad. It is just that our team can't save our GKs when they make a mistake. If France, Spain, Brazil go 1-0 down to a GK mistake then they will come up with something to win. We will do well to get a draw.

I'm not sure, a couple of things: first, De Gea is clearly a better goalkeeper than Hart, though that's arguably beside the point for now. Second, I'm not sure what the Spanish press are like. Maybe they are slaughtering De Gea?

There have been calls for DDG to be dropped but not to the extent of an English style witch-hunt.

He has only made one mistake tbh, not his fault the team concedes one on ones amd penaltys when they first concede chances.

To put things into perspective De Gea has been the best keeper in the PL for 4 years. Hart cant get a game at West Ham

Should be on 1pt by the end of the day, unless he gets a RC or concedes another. I assume the pen conceded deduction will be reversed as it was handball, unless I'm missing something obvious.

With the half time replays, watch Ignasher go to grab Ramos, and then Ramos grabbing him and dragging them both down..... its comical really. The person who put the momentum into that was Ramos, watch him push his weight backwards first....

Been offline most of the summer so far... are the increased level of detailed tweets about goals then summaries at the end of games going to continue into the FPL season?

If so hopefully there’s less mistakes.. mainly to avoid the angry / childish backlash from people responding to correct the errors

Not sure I agree with childish. I put a lot of money into my minileagues. Nothing childish about voicing that you want justice. If I played for fun I wouldn't care ( probably wouldn't play )
