Modric well-backed as hosts bid for semi-finals

The last World Cup quarter-final takes place this evening in Sochi as hosts Russia face Croatia – with the winners to face England in a semi-final tie on Wednesday night.

Luka Modric‘s (£9.1m) meteoric ownership rise has continued apace: having been the most-bought player of the previous round, the Croatian attracted investment from a further 200,000 Fantasy managers ahead of the quarter-final deadline on Friday. Only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe were more popular picks this time.

The Real Madrid midfielder, of course, blanked in the last-16 tie against Denmark after his 116th-minute penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

However, coach Zlatko Dalic has since confirmed that Modric will remain on spot-kick duties for his country after praising the talismanic playmaker’s strength of character in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.

Modric’s ownership of 46.9% dwarfs that of any other player’s on show this evening, with Dejan Lovren (£5.1m) the next-most owned asset in the Croatian squad. Just over a quarter of McDonald’s FIFA managers have drafted the Liverpool defender into their squads.

Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic (£5.5m), owned by 16% of Fantasy bosses, is another popular route into the Croatian backline that has kept two clean sheets in the 2018 World Cup.

Midfielder Ivan Rakitic (£8.5m) is the only other Croatia player with a double-digit ownership.

The midfield is also where the bulk of the investment in the Russian squad lies. Denis Cheryshev (£5.6m), Iury Gazinsky (£4.3m) and Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) all have ownership above 10%, though Golovin was the only one of this trio to start in the last-16 victory over Spain. Cheryshev returns to the Russia side this evening.

Igor Akinfeev (£5.0m), who racked up nine saves in that success over the 2010 World Cup winners, features in 5.3% of Fantasy squads.

There is surprisingly little investment (2.9%) in Artem Dzyuba (£8.1m), Russia’s bustling centre-forward who has three goals and an assist to his name in this tournament already.

Russia XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Ignashevich, Kutepov, Kudryashov; Zobnin, Kuzyaev; Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev; Dzyuba

Croatia XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko, Vida, Lovren, Strinic; Rakitic, Modric; Rebic, Kramaric, Perisic; Mandzukic

You just said emotions are embarrassing.
You get emotions also I assume. You realise that to don't control them. But to have them is a source of shame? This is the logic if a 5 year old.

This is not true. You may never ever have shed a tear but there is real life anecodtal testimony that men (who are real) do indeed cry outside of toilets without shame.
That you think this is a source of shame says more about you and your cultural signposts. Do you think you've had an upbringing that was less than expansive? It's not your fault. Perhaps you have felt like crying and went to the toilet. This is not the behavior of a functioning adult.

I wouldn't be able to look past Aubameyang if it weren't for the seemingly incredible in value in Ramsey and Mkhi (who I currently have both of).

You're the Man City fan, so I guess you know better than I do, but I'm personally worried about Aguero's minutes with Jesus now out of the world cup.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan, just seems a bit too focused on big boys and little uns, and there's not much balance. Not objectively a disaster though

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

I think Aguero won that starting spot last season, and his fixtures are prime for captaincy, also eliminated earlier than Jesus and had a better tournament. Thanks for the input though, you have a fair point.

How do you feel about Mkhi? If he's a starter I'd work him in. Hoping him and Kolasinac get minutes under Emery.

Obviously it's not clear so far from and we'll need to watch preseason - it's only an initial draft and will almost certainly swap things around later if there's any uncertainty, but for the time being I'm keeping very close attention on how Arsenal line up. If he does play, he could be great value.

TAA...likely to rotate with Clyne fit

Sessegnon...unproven in PL and a little overpriced

Kane...will be back late from WC, will he start the season? Plus has issues scoring in August 🙂

I think Aguero/Auba for Kane would be wise. No Salah could also bury your rank pretty quickly!

  18. PL Players Still Involved in World Cup
    Rainer
    • 7 Years
    5 years, 9 months ago

PL players who will be involved with their national team until the 14/15th of July, meaning a reduced rest period as well as a shortened pre-season, with a few likely to be late back.

    9:
    - Spurs: Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Dembele, Alli & Kane.

    7:
    - Chelsea: Courtois, Cahill, Kante, RLC, Hazard, Batshuayi & Giroud.
    - Man City: Walker, Stones, Kompany, Mendy, Delph, KDB & Sterling.
    - Man United: Jones, Young, Pogba, Fellaini, Lingard, Rashford & Lukaku.

    3/4:
    - Liverpool: Mignolet, TAA, (Lovren) & Henderson.

    2:
    - Leicester: Maguire & Vardy.

    1:
    - Arsenal: Welbeck.
    - Burnley: Pope.
    - Everton: Pickford.

0: Bournemouth, Brighton, Cardiff, CPalace, Fulham, Huddersfield, Newcastle, Southampton, Watford, West Ham & Wolves.

Likely a bigger issue for Spurs than the rest as on any given match day that 9 + 2 others could well be their starting team.

It's not a pre-season they need, it's an off-season. They have not had a break as went straight from club duty to country duty. Especially someone like Kane with captaincy on top. The guy needs a recharge.

          This.

Even with Dier, Rose & Dembele not playing regularly, they're still training at the highest possible level to try replicate the feel of a match. The rest will be needed with a pre-season of sorts needed after to get back up to speed.

Yeah absolutely but there's 4 weeks between the WC final and the start of the PL. 2 week trip to Magaluf, 1 week of light training and then back into normal training.

Sure Spurs won't need all the WC guys for their friendlies with Brentford and Slough Rovers 😉

Thought I was on a different thread. Multiple about the same thing. Damn this format.

I'd say no-one needs that much of a pre-season individually unless they're fat, but as a team it's necessary to help hit the ground running when it all starts, so WC players/team (i.e. Spurs) might take an extra game or two to reach their potential.

It's actually the law for them to have a 3 week break, Wenger said this in an interview a few years ago when defending why he eases players in.

World Cup finishes on the 15th, they won't be back at their clubs until 3 weeks after that and then will have a week or two catching up fitness with the rest of the squad, basically, don't expect many to start on GW1, some will be eased in, some will struggle with form, this always happens.

This is green but not a HT, which means that when it actually matters, I won't be able to find it unless I bookmark it for myself (which I will). Even as a HT it would be annoying and hard to find.

They're waiting to see where he will end up as it's unlikely he'll be at Liverpool once the season starts.

It's pretty obvious, isn't it? Same with Mitrovic.

Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool needs to be priced higher than Daniel Sturridge at a side presumably fighting against relegation.

Once it becomes clear where he will play - which we will know as the transfer window shuts before the season gets underway - then FPL can price him accordingly.

Oh I dunno, I think he should probably be priced higher at a worse team where he will be the nailed on to play. Well, nailed on for his 1 game before injury.
