Griezmann in the Fantasy points again as France reach World Cup final

Samuel Umtiti and Antoine Griezmann were the two players to get attacking Fantasy returns as France booked their place in the World Cup final.

There was also a second successive clean sheet for their defence, so those who invested in their back-line were heavily rewarded.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from match 61 of this World Cup.

FRANCE 1-0 BELGIUM

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Samuel Umtiti (£5.9m) – 12 points
  • Hugo Lloris (£5.9m) – 7 points
  • Raphael Varane (£6.1m) – 6 points
  • Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) – 6 points
  • Benjamin Pavard (£4.5m) – 6 points
  • Antoine Griezmann (£10.1m) – 5 points

Antoine Griezmann (£10.1m) made it three matches in a row with attacking returns on Tuesday night as he assisted France’s winning goal against Belgium.

That was scored by Samuel Umtiti (£5.9m), who headed in the Atletico Madrid man’s corner in the 51st minute.

As expected, this World Cup semi-final was a very close affair, with each side testing the opposing goalkeeper on a number of occasions.

Hugo Lloris (£5.9m) emerged as the winner from the two shot-stoppers as he and his French defence kept the clean sheet, with the Spurs man earning an additional point for saves. Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) still managed an extra point too, taking his match score to three.

The highly-owned Romelu Lukaku (£10.1m) has now gone three World Cup matches without a goal and is yet to score in the knockout phase of the competition. However, he still has one more match to add to his tally of four – the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday.

Belgium were forced to deploy Nacer Chadli (£6.9m) at right-back with Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) suspended, but the latter is expected to return to the side for Saturday’s match. Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) was positioned as the left full-back, tasked with containing the explosive Kylian Mbappe (£9.2m). Roberto Martinez is likely to revert back to a three-man central defence with Vertonghen, Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) and Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) retaining their starting berths.

FRANCE XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Hernandez, Umtiti, Varane, Pavard; Pogba, Kante; Matuidi (Tolisso 86’), Griezmann, Mbappe; Giroud (N’Zonzi 85’).

BELGIUM XI (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Vertonghen, Kompany, Alderweireld, Chadli (Chadli 91’); Dembele (Mertens 60’), Witsel; Hazard, Fellaini (Carrasco 80’), De Bruyne; Lukaku.

    Need some advice...

    Karius

Mendy Ward (Eve 4.5 based on pre season) Tomkins Schelloto

    Sanchez Salah Walcott Deulofeu ???

    Kun Zaha ???

Thoughts are that Mendy will get a bucket load if he's even as effective as Sane since he will play the same/similar role but as a def - new Alonso! Sanchez will be a striker till Lukaku is back and is a nice piggy bank for the Auba swap.

I have 13.5m left and my plan is to make Auba my 3rd fwd after GW2. So it's either Kamara and a pricey mid for 352 or Tosun and a cheap mid for 343 with money in the bank.

Jota is in my mind but those fixtures are tough early on.

Harsh. Karius was very solid last season for Liverpool. People taking two concussed mistakes as their sole evidence for judging him poorly.

FPL-wise, 5.0 is an excellent price for last season's third best defence in the league behind City and United. Much better value than De Gea!

Sorry, I meant more that I'd missed my second keeper off!

Leaning towards Tosun and Jota. Tosun for easy fixtures and potential price boosts for early team value and Jota so that if he does fire and Wolves live up to the hype I have an asset and also gain the TV that can be crucial later.

I’m not seeing much consideration of Elyounoussi from Southampton.

Astounding stats last season, played 33, 11 goals, 8 assists for Basle. 10 goals in previous season. Scored in champions league and 3 for Norway in 6 WC Qualifiers.

The prem is sure a step up from Swiss premier but it’s a huge jump from the championship too and everyone considering Jota.

Anyone got any more info on him?

Thought the same when I doubled on Cedric/Bertrand during fantastic runs in the last two seasons (tripled with Redmond perhaps at one point). You don't have to buy Jota or Elnounoussi. There are loads of good other options imo, but you don't have to listen to me! 🙂

There’s a lot in the 5-7.5 range for sure. I might gamble on one mid without prem experience out of the three midprice slots I’ve got. Playing a waiting game on the Arsenal mids so I don’t mind one risky pick.

Sorry but this is a really bad team IMO. If you can't have Salah then there is no excuse for not having at least an 11.0 slot for Aguero/Auba/Lukaku. This forward line will shaft you and there is no need to chuck so much £ in defence and have so much £ on the bench each week.

    Just had a thought...

Otamendi was an incredible asset last season, and though City do have 4 incredible CBs, he played basically every match. Surely he's nailed, with the second CB spot less certain? There can't be much risk there, surely?

You said it yourself they have 4 CBs, last season Kompany was out and Lepoitre came in summer and worked his way in, once he was up to speed Ota was rotated a lot. In saying that Stones and Kompany won’t play the first few rounds but once they’re back expect a lot of rotation

Can't harm to do it for now at least while he's still registered as a Leicester player - never know what injuries might happen before the season start - can always just drop him later. Would recommend!

Are people using a Cairney as a 'start-every-week' player? Sounds like a deep player, who assists the assister. Seems like a bench player, if you're willing to spend 5.0m there.
    .

"Like Ruben Neves for Wolves, Cairney’s excellent passing ability from deep doesn’t necessarily translate into assists.

The Scottish international’s 4.2 long passes per game was the highest average made by any Fulham player this season, while his rate of 0.3 through balls per game was second only to Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers in the Championship this season: all of which suggests Cairney could “assist the assister” as often he claims the three points himself."

Depending on prices and transfers (chiefly Mitrovic) he will be my 5th mid in a 3-5-2 or 4th mid in a 3-4-3. He plays a very different role to Neves, and we play a different style to Wolves.

Looks like he missed out on 4 or 5 assists due to the quality of his team mates. (But then even Liverpool players miss out on assists when Salah misses). I guess Mitrovic could slightly soften the effect of the PL on Cairney's lessened assist return. Not a bargain unless on pens, but could be worth it to save money on a first sub. Even on pens he's probably better as a sub than starting XI

He looks set to take over penalty duties now that Norwood has returned to his parent club so there is that. I think that at this stage no one looks convincing in the cheap midfield bracket and so long as you are flexible enough to find the money for whoever the next Groß is I don't hate the idea of starting with Cairney.

What's a better use of 15.5m to spend on two forwards?
Currently I have Auba and 4.5 fodder (Quaner)

Is it a better strategy to spend that money on two nailed starters?
Vardy + 6.5, say Perez, King, Murray, Wood, etc

    1. Andy_Social

      Vardy without Mahrez?

2 from Zaha, Tosic and Arnie plus some change
Or Firmino + one of them and find 1m from elsewhere.

I'm going one premium and one 3rd tier (7m) striker and a benchie.

So the one mid price striker that no one seems to have in their RMT's is ranked 5th(tied with Kun) in the members area over the first 6 weeks.

Combined with the 6.5m mf that everyone is shooting down on here he gives the best potential combo for 13.5m over the first 6 weeks....

To be fair, it's not easy to translate championship points into projections for a new season. I find RMT most useful later in the season, after things have become more steady, to help me decise it hits (or multiple hits) are worth considering, and perhaps as a point of call to help with a captaincy decision (e.g. "am I misguided to think Vardy has a good chance of outscoring Aguero in this game?")

Pep uses a bunch of systems so it'll be interesting to see but based on his prominent system last season...

1 - Pep will always use a base midfielder, last season it was Fernandinho with the occasional Gündogan cameo there. He is trying to upgrade at this position with Jorginho & Fred previously rumoured. Either way this is an irrelevant fantasy position.

2 - Pep likes to have two 'interiors' or 'free 8s'. Last year, this was primarily the roles of David Silva & de Bruyne. de Bruyne still has the 'start every week' tag but David Silva will certainly be rotated due to fitness and personal issues. Again Gündogan played there last season but Beranrdo Silva might see an increased role here.

3 - Last year we got a lot of Sterling & Sané action on the wings. With the arrival of Mahrez both will see the bench more often as I think Mahrez will be the main wide man. Why? Pep has been chasing him since January and maybe longer, even at 27yo City paid a record price. I haven't seen any Pep quotes on his role yet but this is what i'm assuming.

4 - Jesus OR Kun. I think Kun starts the year but we will see Jesus at some points, mainly in bigger game and off the bench.

      Ederson;
      Walker, CB, CB, Mendy;
      Fernadinho/NewSigning;
      D/B Silva, de Bruyne;
      Mahrez/Sterling, Kun/Jesus, Sané/Sterling.

        Brilliant response Parm.
There is also the option that someone is known, behind the scenes, to be moving on.
But I agree, they aren't buying Mahrez to sit on the bench. I think it will see Sane miss out a bit more although I guess it could be down to who really hits the ground running. Lets face it Sane has had a nice rest.

        1. Parm
          • 12 Years

We might see someone leave, most likely Gündogan but Pep will probably cut down his role to minimum like he did with Yaya. Pre-season *should* give us hints to whether he predominantly uses this system again or make a switch.

            • 7 Years

Yup. Worth paying attention to. I've gone straight for Kun from the off. I think it's his place to lose.
Plus the price tag makes him easy to move out for almost anyone.

Maurizio Sarri has told Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich he will only take over as Blues boss if Eden Hazard and Willian remain at Stamford Bridge.

Cesc Fàbregas could be used as part of a deal that would see Maurizio Sarri and Jorginho join Chelsea.
