Paul Pogba (£8.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m) look set to be the focus of transfer activity this week after they both scored in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City.

However, there was no clean sheet for the Red Devils and the large number of David De Gea (£6.0m) owners, as Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) wiped it out late on.

In this first Scout Notes article of the new season, we take a look at what we learned from the first match.

World Cup Overthink?

Friday night’s match day squads may have some Fantasy managers (and writers!) worried that the affect of the World Cup on FPL may not prove as extensive as first thought.

Pogba started the opening match of the campaign quite unexpectedly, even though his extended involvement in the World Cup meant he only returned to training earlier this week.

Pogba was not the only name in the match day squads to take Fantasy managers by surprise either. Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) was named alongside Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) in a two-man United attack and Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) played the last 25 minutes. The fact that the Belgian was able to feature at the end would suggest he will be in the frame to start in Gameweek 2 – which could spell the end for Sánchez’s chances of playing centre-forward for much longer.

It was just the same for Leicester. Harry Maguire (£5.5m) and Vardy were considered strong doubts for Gameweek 1, but the centre-back started the match and the latter came on as a second-half substitute to score.

It had initially appeared that there was merit in avoiding any players who had made it to at least the semi-finals of the World Cup. However, if Friday’s team-sheets set the tone for the rest of Gameweek 1, the decision to avoid certain assets could prove costly.

POGBANDWAGON

The fact that Pogba took the third minute penalty which opened the scoring for United, will improve his popularity between now and Gameweek 2. However, there are still several unknown factors when it comes to the penalty-taking situation at Old Trafford.

“We don’t have a penalty taker, it’s how we feel and I decided to take it. Maybe on the next game I leave it to Alexis.” – Paul Pogba

Obviously the above quote, given post-match confuses things, but it also remains to be seen whether Pogba would take penalties when sharing the pitch with Lukaku, for example. Furthermore, as the spot-kick was awarded for a handball, this may have played a part. Had Sanchez been fouled for it, he may have been more likely to claim it.

Although, even if penalties are not necessarily nailed-on for Pogba, there were signs that he could be the influential figure United need in midfield this season. After playing an important role for France at the World Cup, he showed great leadership skills against Leicester, demonstrating the energy both to win back possession in midfield and distribute the ball around his team mates. These were obviously factors towards him earning two bonus points in the match – all furthering his appeal for subsequent Gameweeks.

“(The World Cup) is the past. Now I am someone who likes challenges and I want to improve and progress. You have to keep working to get better and better. I won’t be full for a World Cup, I want to win other trophies. I didn’t win the Premier League or the Champions League.” – Paul Pogba

However, the fact that Pogba played this match without pre-season under his belt, there is probably still a possibility that he could be rested for Gameweek 2, although we’ll need more information first.

“I didn’t have any pre-season game, I came back on Monday. It was very hard and difficult for the legs and stamina.” – Paul Pogba

ARE YOU SHAW?

The 3.7 percent of managers who opted to invest in Shaw, as a cheaper route into the United defence, were rewarded on Friday night – but not in the way they were expecting. The left-back scored his first ever senior goal for the club in the second-half after Juan Mata’s (£6.5m) cross to the back-post.

One thing that had put off potential buyers during the summer was a fear over rotation for Shaw, with Ashley Young (£6.0m) expected to be back in action soon following the World Cup and Mourinho’s historically fractious relationship with the former Southampton man.

However, the fact that Shaw was a threat going forward, and did well to finish for his goal, may well be in his favour when Young starts to challenge for his place again.

Fantasy managers may have to keep an eye on what information comes out of the United camp next week on Young’s situation before jumping on Shaw too quickly.

UNITED DEFENCE

The 30 percent of Fantasy managers who backed David De Gea (£6.0m) were so nearly rewarded with a clean sheet at the first time of asking. The shutout would have almost certainly immediately factored into the ongoing debate over whether selecting one premium goalkeeper has value compared to rotating two budget shot-stoppers.

But the cheaper strategy looks to be safe, at least for now, especially when it comes to the Red Devils’ defence anyway. Although they were close to a seventh shut-out in 10 league matches, United were not as in control of the meeting as they’d have liked.

In fact, Leicester actually enjoyed more possession than their hosts and took more shots than them too. The Foxes fired off 13 efforts to United’s eight. Mourinho’s side were the more accurate with six shots on target to Leicester’s four but given the amount of opportunities they were able to create it does leave a question mark over United’s defence.

There were some encouraging signs from that end of the pitch for the Red Devils, though. One of those was obviously Shaw, but the other was a start for Matteo Darmian (£5.0m), despite reports that he was not going to travel with the squad for the match. As the only feasible option at right-back with Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) and Diogo Dalot (£5.5m) injured and the most-used player there in pre-season, it could still factor into his decision to exit the club this summer. Even if he lasts a few weeks before leaving, he presents another cheaper option in the United back-line if it becomes apparent that they need to be covered.

Eric Bailly (£5.5m) seems to have come through the match unscathed too, after he was a slight injury doubt earlier in the week. This is also good news as he is the most likely of United’s centre-backs to have a run in the side when fit, and was the most-used in that position over the summer. His availability would further remove the pressure over having to sign De Gea for United defensive coverage.

OUT OF POSITION WATCH

New Leicester City signing Ricardo Pereira (£5.0m) has already put himself on the Fantasy radar after his performance at Old Trafford.

Classified as a defender in FPL, he played on the right flank of attacking midfield for the first hour of the match, only moving back when Rachid Ghezzal (£5.5m) came on for Daniel Amartey (£4.5m). That tactical switch put Ghezzal into midfield and Pereira return to his more familiar right-back position.

That did not stop the former Porto man from involving himself in Fantasy points, though. He was the man who provided the assist for Vardy’s late clean sheet buster.

Fantasy managers will have to keep an eye on his positioning to see if he is deployed there again, although once Ghezzal commands a starting place in the team, that may force him back. In the mean-time, favourable fixtures against Wolves (H) and Southampton (A) could be used to exploit Pereira’s position – although we will still need more information before backing him as a transfer target.

MOURINHO STILL NOT HAPPY

While three points on the opening day of the season will put a positive spin on Man United’s Friday night exploits, Mourinho is still not a completely happy man. There were plenty of Fantasy managers who were put off United assets by the negative feel around the club, and that cloud may continue to hang over Old Trafford, especially considering transfer deadline day did not go according to plan.

“I needed more changes, but I couldn’t. It was not easy to manage the game from the touchline point of view. We saw lots of glimpses of the type of football we want to see. Of course, it will be a difficult season for everybody. For us it will be a difficult season because I had my plans, and I had my plans for many months, and I started the Premier League season without a situation I thought. That’s football, that’s football management, I think football is changing and probably football managers should be called head coaches. I think we are ore the head coach than the manager.” – Jose Mourinho

He did look pretty good in the first half of last season. He disappeared after Silva’s move to Everton was blocked. I’m hoping he knew he would go with him and so his performances dropped after that, hoping he reverts back to first half of last season now.

Worth a punt for a couple GW's based on his brief spells of influence last season and potential rejuvenation with transfer. Got his head on a lot of chances last season.

Why use bench boost this week? It's such a waste, when there are double game weeks later in the season, you could have 15 players playing twice.

I drew comparison to the Holebas handball vs Bou last season (the only incident I could find that is similar) but Opta's view was that the shot and block "forced" or drew the handball in last night's incident (due in no small part to the power of the shot), whereas with Holebas, it was not forced. So the assist remained. It was challenged from all sides, including ISM.

It will be clarified in Monday's Scout article I reckon. Deflecting social media flames towards Opta is really not a great idea imo. Whatever the decision, some won't agree, that's the nature of these decisions which can be difficult.

I think we will get the How Assists Work articles republished soon which will help as points of reference. In those it says...

"Remember that assists are also given to players who draw a handball from an opponent via a pass, cross, shot or final touch."

          https://www.premierleague.com/news/511814

The debate here is if it's felt that the block is a factor in this. Opta decided that it wasn't according to their rules on Fantasy Assists. There's nothing in the published rules or in that article about touches and blocks before handballs so this didn't contradict any rules and wasn't inconsistent with previous incident to my memory.

Obviously Opta now need to remain consistent with this from now on, though.

In the meantime, I'll see about updating the article above with more detail.

Opta determine what a "fantasy" assist is? Why are they getting involved in FPL?

If only the powers that be would look at the great things that Telegraph Fantasy Football are doing with key contributions.

3 points for an opta assist.
2 points for a key contribution.

            Simple. Problem solved.

The TFF rule book has fixed 99% of the things that wind people up about FPL. I wish they would take note and poach a few of their good ideas.

I thought in line with Holebas it was highly debatable but I see why the handball last night is more forced than the Holebas one.

If a shot results in a "forced" handball, regardless of saves/blocks before the handball, then it's an assist. If the handball appears more voluntary and inexplicable (see Holebas v Bou) then it's no assist.

The debate surrounds the "forced" issue but that's something for Opta to decide.

Just to make myself very clear. The handball was a defensive error. He tried to gain control of the ball aften the shot was blocked, but used his arm. Not like he did not see the ball coming or had no time to react. That is just a shameless way to start the new season really, and to be honest I think it contradicts the rules.

If it hadn't been a deliberate handball then it might not have been a penalty.
If it hadn't been blocked on the way then there would have been no question about Sanchez being given the FPL assist.
Sanchez's shot gave the defender a choice between possibly conceding a goal or giving away a penalty - that's an FPL assist.

It was the second defender who gave away the penalty with a handball. Most penalties given for deliberate handball could be considered to be defensive errors.

The first defender blocked or deflected it and the second defender then gave away the penalty. But both actions were consequences of Sanchez's shot.

DDG made a pass 5 minutes before that which led to the shot? Can he have an assist aswell?

The rules are pretty clear when it comes to multiple opponents touching the ball.

Sanchez was the last United player to touch the ball before the penalty award. Assists are never awarded to players who were not the last player on the attacking side to touch the ball (or be fouled for a penalty or direct free kick) before the scorer of the goal or own goal.

I know that, but an assist is also not awarded, when a defender touches the ball and another defender then makes a defensive error. DDG might aswell get the assist. Rules are being ignored in either case unless no assist is given.
Why even write 30 sentences if the only one that matters is: OPTA decides

When two opponents touch the ball, it depends whether the first one is considered to be a significant deflection. It's a bit of a grey area.

The ball gets deflected 90 degrees after blocked by the first defender???!!?!!?!? How is that not significant?
That is not a grey area at all?!?!?!?!

That is just a shameless assist, and the worst way to start the new season.

How was Holebas's handball not forced? Ibe was there to score a tap in if he didn't handle the ball. It's intentional, but also something Wilson deserved an assist from.

Yeah, I really struggle to see a distinction between the two. I personally don't think either should be an assist, but there would be less grounds to complain had both incidents been treated the same. Given the rules and the past precedent this shouldn't have been a particularly difficult decision to make.

Awarding an assist to sanchez in real world stats or on fantasy football is pure nonsense for that goal.

The defender wasn't forced to stick his arm out and control it on his bicep. He just tried to chest it down in the box like an idiot and paid the price for getting it totally wrong.

    3. Sir David White
      7 years, 11 months ago

      It was Shaw's assist.

He kicked it onto Sanchez's foot and then it bounced onto the two Leicester defenders.

Horrible decision by FPL and with all due respect Mark (and I do hold you in the highest regards) but any football tragic knows that is not an assist. After the ball is deflected from the initial shot it’s a new passage of play and Amartey makes a defensive decision to stick an arm out. Sanchez’s shot plays no role in the decision, hence no assist. Clear as mud

Nail on the head. Farcical assist. I was at the game and watched the highlights in the concourse at half time and not once did I think sanchez would get an assist for that. If anyone thinks he is deserving of an assist for that needs to give their head a wobble.

It's not an assist, it's a Fantasy Assist and Opta were/are charged with devising the rules for those and they make the calls when a goal goes in. ISM can and do challenge decisions and ask for review - as they did with this one - but in this case, as I've mentioned, the issue of "forced" handball, decided that the assist remained. That doesn't contradict any rule published or any incident in the past to my knowledge. And yes, the Holebas incident was part of the review in this case but Opta felt that that handball was not forced. I can tell you that one was reviewed at the time too.

I can only be transparent on the process. I don't like Fantasy Assists either. I'd be happy with fewer points via just the regular intended assists. But it's not my call so I can only try to explain the rules and process to help you guys out when there are queries such as this.

The funny thing here is, not many are defending the assist. I think most that have sanchez feel lucky to have got the assist more than feeling the need to defend it. Never should it be this difficult to see where or how an assist is given.
Regardless of the 'fine print' in the rulings, if it's too tough to tell, it should not be given!
I think what is forgotten here is that people actually play this game for money against friends etc, making decisions like this very costly for some.. Not as if it should be a coin flip. It should be a CLEAR assist, not some BS 90° deflection to an intentional hand ball where the defender made the mistake.

Do we actually know for sure it was given for Amartey's, and not Morgan's error? If it's the former, as a Sanchez owner, I am overwhelmingly surprised, to put it mildly.

Depends how he plays really. I think Young will come in for Darmian next week. It becomes a bit tricky when Valencia returns (around GW4). You'd think it will be Valencia and Young on the fullbacks then but if United's right flank is as useless as it was yesterday then maybe Young gets a go at RW.

He looked decent in my opinion. I only got him as a punt for a short term Man Utd defender, so if he remains in the team longer it’s a bonus. The problem is he’s one of those players where the common narrative is to blame and amplify any mistakes.

He was very good. Made lots of clearances at the back, brought the ball forward, showed excellent understanding with Alexis, went into the box a lot. Darmian on the other side did nothing.

I'd say Shaw is nailed until further notice.

Looked good in pre season, with Lamela injured and Son off to Asia cup should feature unless we change to 3 at the back. It’s a gamble imo to include him in our fpl teams but it was either him or Richarlison and I’m not convinced by him

My take on Arnie is that those who have him and Aguero will be starting him despite owning a Liverpool defender. With no Aguero and a slightly deeper squad I had the option to bench him and field a strong enough XI so I had to take that opportunity. Same with Mendy.

I'm obviously hoping for a Liverpool clean sheet and an Arsenal goal. I don't think either are that far fetched and both would dent Aguero owners fielding Mendy and Arnie.

There's obvious risk though and also my two replacements - Jota and Zaha/King have to deliver.

Lol. Yeah, it's not overthinking at all!.

I guess if Aguero scores heavy it's all out of the window but, then again, with Sanchez' 5 points, Aguero now has to score to perhaps only beat him by a point.

Not sure he will be straight back in at LB for United after Mou’s comments last night post match.

I think you might find Young and Shaw are rotated more this season or doubled up on the left for the tougher games against the top teams in the PL.

I’m going to hold back for now. He took his goal well, but he wasn’t rampaging down the wing most of the game in a way that cried out must buy.

He is though a cheap way into a Mourinho defence so I can see why so many will be tempted.

I have him, and a Watford CB for cover.

Young is a dependable professional that Mourinho had to lean on last season. This season his actual left back looks fit and confident. When playing next to a Jones/Smalling, Shaw will have that extra stability and should be first choice. A couple of big mistakes and he will get the hook though.

Has to be a watch and see. Mourinho trusts him more than Shaw, so I think it’s 70/80% chance of him getting his place back IMO.

Sanchez owners - whats your initial thoughts on what to do with him?

I think I will give him Brighton, then hopefully Hazard looks good & make the swap.

Yep, my tactic is just that. Keep him for GW2 and then he'll be part of a 2-transfer move for GW3. Sanchez at Brighton is okay but, as I've said before, I doubt many will take him beyond GW3 or 4.

By then Kane, KDB, Hazard will all be on the agenda with some minutes behind them and Aub will have better fixtures.

As soon as Hazard looks ready, he's in. Probably GW3, depending on how strong Arsenal look and if he plays today.

Hold for now. He put one on a plate for lukaku who missed and also had a few other decent assists. His touch and passing were meh at times but he did ok and in a few more gamess should hopefully pick up

Not going to kneejerk him out, he got an assist after all. But my plan is to transfer him out for Hazard sooner rather than later!

Personally, I thought he struggled on the right hand side being left footed, got caught put a couple of times with it.

He was struggling because he had to cover Darmian and Mata's lazy asses.

His heat map was impressive, all over the pitch. Reminded me of Roy Keane a bit. Maybe it was the aggressive tackles 🙂

        Promising.

One or two wayward passes, but that was more a lack of chemistry with his teammates imo.

Honestly didn't think he had a good game, lacked the composure and awareness that he'd shown in pre-season and didn't give United the desired control in midfield. Andreas however had a good game in that regard with his ball retention, just lacked positional discipline a little as Maddinson got into pockets behind him.

What are you doing with Sanchez? I didn't watch the game but there seemed to be a lot of negativity around him. If KDB is available, he might be more tempting but I'm half tempted to at least give Sanchez the BHA game.

I think it’s too early to judge Sanchez.

If Mata had taken his golden opportunity at 1-0 that Sanchez laid for him on a plate then his points tally would be very respectable for an average performance.

There are always transfers being made in the hour/hours before the first kickoff of the game week after transfer deadline. Are these mostly people from around the world getting the time difference mixed up thinking they are still in the previous gameweek; or pure nutters making transfers in the new gameweek before a ball has been kicked?
