With one round of the latest Fantasy Premier League season already in the history books, it’s time to start preparing for Gameweek 2.

Where better to start than with the all-important captain debate, which looks like it will be less clear-cut than it was in Gameweek 1.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) will obviously remain the favourite with his 54 percent ownership but his next fixture is arguably tougher than a home tie with a new-look West Ham side. In the final nine Gameweeks of 2018/19 the only outfit to keep more clean sheets than Crystal Palace was Liverpool themselves. Since James Tomkins (£4.5m) and Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) were paired together again the Eagles have been a difficult prospect to break down.

For those not in possession of Salah, there are other alternatives amongst his team-mates including Sunday’s brace-scoring midfielder Sadio Mané (£9.5m), left-back Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) who assisted and kept a clean sheet, and striker Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Manchester City’s options certainly win out when it comes to fixture difficulty as they host Huddersfield Town on Sunday afternoon. However, the fact that every player has now returned to the group since the World Cup the dreaded issue of rotation could cause some problems.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the most backed ownership-wise, in 32 percent of squads, but could be benched to allow Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) a first start of the season. Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) looks to be back in the conversation sooner than expected too, his seven-point haul in Gameweek 1 putting him on the captain radar, especially as his 2.5 percent ownership makes a potentially powerful differential option.

Just as Robertson may be considered for the captaincy, his Man City counter-part Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has forced his way into the conversation with 15 points scored against Arsenal from assisting both of his team’s goals.

Tottenham’s options have dragged themselves into the conversation after seeing off Newcastle on Saturday and preparing for a home match against newly-promoted Fulham. Harry Kane (£12.5m) may not have set the world on fire but with 31.1 percent ownership he should be considered by those in possession of him.

Elsewhere on the Spurs roster Gameweek 1 goalscorer Dele Alli (£9.0m) may be turned to as another differential option while Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) offers the more creative angle for the fixture.

Anyone brave enough to place their captain on a player from Chelsea v Arsenal have a few outside outside options. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) will be the obvious choice from the Gunners while Marcos Alonso‘s (£6.5m) performance against Huddersfield may have convinced some of his doubters. Don’t forget that Eden Hazard (£10.5m), backed by 11 percent, may alsio play a part in the fixture.

Make sure you watch our Captain video below and then vote in the poll underneath it. Why not tell us why you made your choice in the comments? We’ll be rounding off the debate later this week with another Captain Sensible article.

    Foster
    Robertson Mendy Shaw
    Mane Salah Lucas Bilva
    Aguero King Tosun

    Subs: Stekelenburg Wan-Bissaka Peltier Stephens

I went into gw1 with 0.5 spare to upgrade King for Arnautovic in gameweek 2. After scoring 94 points I'm thinking saving the transfer might be more valuable but I'm not sure if i should stick to my plan.

    Thoughts?

I did exactly the same but given I have no city attackers I upgraded Sanchez to Sterling.

I'd stick to your guns if I were you - King has far more favourable fixtures in the short term

Easily a) for me after seeing how sharp Sterling was and that goal was superb also! Home fix v HUD looks far better on paper than a potentially tricky away game for LIV!

Does AWB potentially offer more goal threat than Tomkins (assuming he is now nailed)?

Like many here, I got Tomkins as what I saw as the best 4.5 option with both good threat and fixtures, and got AWB as a playing 4.0 bench fodder. But is it feasible to now just go with AWB? Reluctant mainly due to Tomkins' perceived goal threat.

Depends what you’ll do with the 0.5 mate. No harm having both with their value, especially trough the sweet fixtures.

Prob not more goal threat, but def more attacking returns imo! AWB has been converted into a RWB, his natural position is right winger so hence the fact that he can dribble and play a key pass!

I have both and I'm sticking with Tomkins, even though obi wan's monster haul is staring at me from the bench. Tomkins is good at set pieces and pool can't defend those properly, so maybe it's his turn to score this week.

Obviously he's aware of the Barca interest but the club has made it clear that he's not going anywhere with the English window being shut.

He only returned to training last Monday and trained so well that he was ready to start just four days later. Took a confident penalty and was bossing the game until he ran out of gas late in the second half. People not seeing this part but only the one tweet where he actually didn't say anything wrong. Now compare his dedication to say Martial or Sane who have had the whole summer off but still not in shape to start GW1.

I think there is more chance of Mourinho leaving before Pogba. He's on a long term contract and no way United let him leave when they should be building a team around him. Aside from De Gea and perhaps Lukaku in the near future, Pogba is their only World Class player.

Man, a couple of hits would have been much more advantageous to get in the players that rose. Your wildcard is your most valuable chip, things could be completly different in 2/3 gameweeks.

Your 1st wildcard should set you up for most of the season.. Seems like a rash decision to burn it so quickly considering we know little more now than we did a week ago

I agree it is very early to WC, but at the end of the day it is his decision to make and how he wishes to approach the game. We can advise someone not to WC if he is considering it, but what about those who already WCed? We can only offer advise to help out his team now.

    Am I G2G?

    Ederson

Robertson - Davies - Wan Bissaka

    Bilva - Salah (c) - Mane - Richarlison

Aguero (vc) - King - Arnie

Waiting on another FT, to swap Davies for Mendy & change Ederson...

Salah the best captain choice, or Aguero?

Only gotten around to watching the LIV game in full.
My take from it is that Keita could be the signing that could help them to win the title (pains me to say, being a MUN fan).
I know, I know its only one game v WHU but he looks a real beast and a very clever player at that. Should get plenty of assists too which could make him slightly under priced as an FPL asset.
Salah is still the main man as one would expect, most forward and the one likely to benefit most from tap-ins from assists from Firmino, Robertson, Trent etc. Positive as a Mane owner, in a Salahless team, is that he looked sharp (sharper than Salah I would say) and really up for it!
City v Liverpool looks set to be a much closer battle this season I reckon but time will tell.

I have watched Keita for two seasons Leipzig. I can tell you he is a force of nature.
He doesn't stop running, has a wonderful shot on him, and loves playing forward passes.

For his price, there are better FPL assets to own.

Maybe it's just annoyance at having gone Erikson over Mane for GW 1 and he has Fulham at home which on paper is a good fixture. But everything is telling me to swap him for a city midfielder.

Fulham, despite losing, were really good against Palace and could definitely trouble Spurs. Best case he grabs a goal and I transfer him the following week; but I expect City to win 4 or 5-0 though it's a lottery who gets those goals.

Do I trade Erikson or hold?

Unless Richarlison is ruled out (which I think is very unlikely), I'm going to safe the transfer.

Either this week or next week with 2 transfers.

Erikson -> KDB (maybe this week, 100% for GW 3)
Auguero -> Aubameyang (maybe for GW 3)

City fixtures are great and double city seems sensible, but so are Arsenals from GW 3 and I like to avoid focussing on one team too much. On a match to match basis I prefer Augero but in terms of minutes, think he and most city players will get rotated where as Aubameyang is nailed. From GW 3 -> 10 pretty likely that Aubameyang edges the points.

Already made ahead of the price changes. Jota to Richarlison.

Appreciate theres a slight risk on Richarlison's fitness, but the superb post by Fusen on sunday night, coupled with the fact neither Richarlison or Marco Silva mentioned it in post match press conferences, allayed a lot of fears for me.

Several reasons for making the switch - obviously theres the fact Richarlison is coming off the back of 2 goals, but also his fantastic run of fixtures, including a match next against a poor Southampton side, and the fact he's owned by 45% of the top 10k. If he hauls again that would be too damaging to me, and his price would start to get away further too.

Made the same move. Not expecting him to go crazy. I’m still doubtful on his chance of returns. But was super exposed in my ML (maybe 7/7 have him) and as you say the top players will have him.

Might get Jota (or Neves) back in the future. gw7-14 the fixtures look a bit kinder and can monitor form.

Yeah I felt dogsick on saturday night being 10 points behind the top 10k average, with 6 points of that purely due to Richarlison. Fortunately Sunday turned it round for me this week but I don't want to be in the same position in GW2 being burned by him again. Especially with him facing Southampton who in my opinion are a dreadful side.

Considering this transfer but hesitating to jump on the bandwagon with the looming fear of a big return from Jota soon. Any idea of Jota's stats last match? He still got an assist as a newly promoted player in GW1.

        1. The Rumour Mill
          • 9 Years

I was grateful for the assist but it was rather fortuitous as it was Jagielka making a mistake and panicking to foul Jota. Neves then took a great free kick to score.

Jota had one shot (from 35 yards with an xG of 0.01), and made zero key passes.

Last season, I booted Arne when I thought he was injured and he went and made me pay big time.

The template smashed it so there is very little need for most of us to waste a transfer on a sideways move.

Probably wait until I have 2 FT. Very tempted by Sterling, though slightly concerned about rotation especially now they have Mahrez and with Bilva playing so well. My plan right now is to wait until next week, then swap Aguero and Stephens, for Sterling and a 4.5 striker, if one exists - might have to take a -4 hit to free up 0.5m to get a 5.0 striker.
