The Digest – FPL Gameweek 2

Our Gameweek 2 coverage ends with this regular look back at a player, team and discussion point that attracted our interest in the weekend’s matches.

Danny Ings got off the mark in a Southampton shirt to command our attention, while Chelsea’s early-season displays bode well for their Fantasy Premier League assets.

We also look at the rise and rise of the left-back.

The Player

After a promising 34-minute cameo at St. Mary’s on the opening weekend of the season, Danny Ings (£5.5m) backed up that performance with his first Southampton goal in the 2-1 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Ings is currently the third-most bought forward of the round, with his price tag being an obvious source of attraction.

Sergio Aguero was the only player to attempt more shots than Ings (six) in Gameweek 2 and the former Liverpool man could well have had a second goal to his name but for the sprawling reflexes of Jordan Pickford in the first half.

Ings on occasion came short from his centre-forward position to collect the ball in the Gameweek 1 encounter with Burnley, but his collective penalty box touch count should assuage any fears that he plays too deeply to represent a potent goal threat: the Saints striker already has more touches in the opposition area than the likes of Marko Arnautovic, Cenk Tosun, Troy Deeney and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the mid-price forward bracket, despite playing fewer minutes than any of the above.

Only Aguero and Mitrovic among FPL forwards have had more attempts on goal than Ings so far this season, with eight of the Southampton striker’s nine shots coming from inside the opposition box.

No player in Ings’ position has created more chances than him in 2018/19, either.

While Southampton have yet to taste victory this season, their chance creation rate bodes well for Ings’ prospects in front of goal: only Manchester City and Chelsea have carved out more opportunities than the Saints so far.

With fixtures against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Brighton to come in the next three Gameweeks (two of which are at home), Ings looks excellent value for money as a budget third (or even second) striker. His £5.5m price tag means he could easily be benched for the subsequent fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea, with his low cost allowing the freed-up budget to be spent on improving positions elsewhere.

While the Saints are well-stocked with forwards, the struggles of Charlie Austin in front of goal this season and Mark Hughes’ switch to a 4-4-2 (i.e. there is space in the starting XI for two forwards in this system) means that there should be little risk of reduced pitch-time in the short term.

The Team

The appointment of Maurizio Sarri as head coach of Chelsea in July was met with enthusiasm among Blues fans and Fantasy managers alike, given the 59-year-old’s impressive record at Napoli.

No Serie A side had scored more goals than Napoli (251) during Sarri’s three-year tenure, while their number of chances created (526) in 2017/18 was greater than not just all other Serie A clubs but also than the 20 sides in the Premier League. Manchester City were the only club in either England or Italy to have more attempts on goal than Napoli (656) in the season just gone, meanwhile.

Despite the sky-high expectations for Chelsea in the Fantasy community, the general consensus was that it would perhaps take a while for Sarri to impress his footballing doctrine on his new squad, particularly given the late nature of the veteran’s appointment (four weeks before the start of 2018/19) and that several of his squad had a brief pre-season due to their participation in the World Cup.

Sarri, indeed, warned just before Gameweek 1 that it would take “two to three months” for his side to get up to speed.

With two wins from two and six goals scored (only City have found the net on more occasions), however, “Sarri-ball” is already in full swing.

Chelsea’s next four fixtures – Newcastle United (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (h), West Ham United (a) – are appealing and their underlying attacking statistics make for encouraging reading.

Only Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have had more attempts on goal than Chelsea (37) in the first two Gameweeks of the season, though the fact that the Blues faced a more difficult fixture in Arsenal last weekend should count in their credit. Sarri’s troops, indeed, racked up 24 shots on Petr Cech’s goal over those 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have also carved out more chances and registered more successful passes in the final third than all other Premier League sides bar Pep Guardiola’s irresistible reigning champions.

All this has been done mostly without the services of Eden Hazard (£10.5m) and Mateo Kovacic (£6.0m), two important pieces of Sarri’s jigsaw who have been reduced to substitute appearances so far this season as they continue to build up match fitness.

Chelsea’s impressive start has translated into FPL points: Marcos Alonso (£6.6m) is the highest-scoring defender in the game, Pedro (£6.6m) has back-to-back league goals and Hazard has two assists to his name already despite only playing a total of 43 minutes.

N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), meanwhile, has suddenly and improbably become something of a budget goal threat, with Jorginho (£5.1m) now tasked with the metronomic role at the base of the midfield three. No player had more penalty box touches than Kante in the Arsenal match, while the French international has already registered four attempts on goal – all of which were from inside the opposition area – so far this season; Kante had the same number of penalty box touches (five) after ten league appearances last season as he managed in 90 minutes of action at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

No FPL midfielder had more attempts on goal (six) than Pedro in Gameweek 2, meanwhile.

While Alonso’s penalty box touches and shot count are down on 2017/18 for the opening two Gameweeks, the Chelsea left-back still represents a potent threat from his new “orthodox” left-back role: unsurprisingly, no Premier League defender has had more attempts on goal than Alonso this season.

That Alonso next faces opposition with potential problems at right-back – DeAndre Yedlin (who looks the likeliest to recover) and Javier Manquillo struggling with knocks, Isaac Hayden suspended – is all-the-more encouraging. Even Cardiff and West Ham face uncertainty in that position, given that Neil Warnock and Manuel Pellegrini have switched right-backs just two Gameweeks into the season.

The Blues’ defence is perhaps something of a concern, given that they conceded 15 attempts on goal and five big chances to Arsenal on Saturday, but with Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.5m) compensating with attacking returns, many will happily overlook those issues for the time being.

While many FPL managers are already investing heavily in Chelsea assets (four Blues players feature in the top ten most-bought midfielders of this round), Gameweek 3 might be the final audition for the rest of us. A subsequent double-header of Bournemouth and Cardiff at Stamford Bridge is surely too good to overlook.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Football Scout members Ginkapo and Goldman have both raised Hot Topics in recent days to question/offer explanations why left-backs are performing so exceptionally well in the first two Gameweeks of the season.

Five of the seven defenders who have scored 15 points or more so far in 2018/19 are left-backs, with another of the septet – right-back Ricardo Pereira – spending a large chunk of his time “out of position” in midfield.

The underlying statistics certainly back up their FPL returns.

The three defenders with the most attempts on goal this season are all left-backs, with Benjamin Mendy and Ben Davies (who is not even among the highest-scoring players in this position in FPL) narrowly trailing Marcos Alonso in terms of shots fired.

Half of the 12 defenders (and three of the top four) with the most penalty box touches this season are also left-sided full-backs/wing-backs, while the five defenders who have created the most chances in the opening two Gameweeks are Jose Holebas, Mendy, Davies, Ben Chilwell and Andrew Robertson – all five of them with one position in common.

It is difficult to offer a satisfactory explanation as to why this trend has developed. What should be noted, though, is that two of the three defenders who provided the most assists last season – right-backs Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker – have played just one Premier League game so far this season, with Davies and Mendy on the opposite flanks having 180 minutes to their names.

Trippier, indeed, delivered more crosses than any other FPL defender in Gameweek 2 and had as many penalty box touches as Alonso and Robertson.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have replaced a genuine wing-back in Victor Moses in the right-back position with a man who has spent several seasons at centre-half: Cesar Azpilicueta.

While the omens are good for our assets at left-back, we are only two Gameweeks into the campaign. With Trippier and Walker yet to get up to full speed but showing promising signs in their sole appearances of 2017/18, the dominance of the left-sided full-back could be a fleeting fad. Arsenal’s fixtures, for example, are set to take a turn for the better and the attack-minded Hector Bellerin – while suspect defensively – could suddenly present himself as an attractive option in the £5.5m bracket in the coming Gameweeks. Antonio Valencia has also yet to feature for Manchester United this season through injury.

At the moment though, we certainly can’t argue against Messrs Mendy, Alonso and Robertson as premium defensive picks. It would be a brave FPL manager who attempted to pre-empt the resurgence of the right-back (or, indeed, centre-half) by overlooking that aforementioned trio.

  1. Liverpool against the big sides

For those wondering whether to keep hold of all 3 Liverpool assets for the upcoming run, I’ve looked back on last seasons results against the rival 5.
    Arsenal: H 4-0. A 3-3
    Chelsea: H 1-1. A 1-0L
    Man C: H 4-3. A 5-0L
    Man Utd: H 0-0. A 2-1L
    Spurs: H 2-2. A 4-1L

As you can see Liverpool struggled in the big games, particularly away, where we were winless. Registering just two wins out of 10 and conceding 21 goals at an average of 2.1 per game.
It must be added however, that with the addition of VVD along with the two full backs really finding their feet towards the end of the season, complimented by a world class keeper, I can’t see as many conceded goals this season.
16 goals were scored by Liverpool at 1.6 per game, but is that enough for you to keep 2 attackers from the outfit.
If you keep any Liverpool players, who do think they will be? In addition, how much will the result against Brighton affect your decision?
A 5-0 scoreline might not really change your planning, but I imagine a 0-0 would be a real awakening.

Yeah Liverpool can still score goals vs anyone , so keeping Salah/Mane! The defense could be a problem , so thinking about rotating TAA for those games instead of set and forget Robbo.

Mané's price rising is a clear issue as he will cost you extra if you want to get rid and then get him back. I like the idea of removing Salah for GW7, 8 which is che, MCI for Kane and then getting Salah back.

Salah will already been removed to afford Hazard in my case. Might get rid of Aguero to afford Kane around GW7.

Salah and maybe TAA. On a wc and just don't fancy their cs chances for those games (tot/che away, mci home) given others with better fixtures. Vardy's absence and no Mahrez maybe changes risks on Leicester game though. Relying on Robertson assists still seems optimistic.

I think Liverpool’s defence and keeper have vastly improved since a lot of those games have taken place.

Personally I’m keeping my LFC players (Salah and TAA) in the team or at least in the squad.

          I reckon Salah is fixtureproof.

They look quite good atm so donnt see a point of making exit plan. Will observe for sure and make my decision later but think thay can score with every big team.
Obviously double in Liv def may not be a good idea for that run but will I go 1 or 2 attackers, hmmm lets give it a week or two as for now think its not as risky as you may think.

Indeed - the Liverpool do very well against big teams and struggle against small teams myth has been outdated for a couple of years now, they're much better against the bottom feeders they beat 4-0.

As a Mane and Firmino owner (don't own Salah), I think I'll hold on to Mane throughout - but offload Firmino, perhaps for someone like Mitrovic or Zaha to afford Alonso at the back.

Yeah I love Robbo but after GW3, chances of CS will be reduced for Pool and 6.0 is a lot to pay for a def if you dont believe in CS... so TAA will prob come in for me too, he might miss the odd game more often than Robbo but is 1.0 less so ok.

Will prob activate WC next week to make the most of CHE, ARS and CITY fixtures

I think there's a few caveats from last season to be aware of here. The away loss to Man City was heavily influenced by Mane's red card. Prior to that Liverpool had been coping quite well. Away to Chelsea Liverpool were knackered having just played the second leg against Roma I believe.

The draw with Arsenal and thrashing by Spurs were both defensive clamities which occurred before VVD arrived. I agree with Rupert the Horse and honestly believe the addition of him and Allison will improve the defence in these top 6 encounters hugely, we have already seen evidence it has against the "smaller" sides. There's also the fact that Liverpool have strengthened their squad as a whole to consider, which should reduce fatigue across the season.

I will keep Liverpool players, certainly Mane, as I've had him from the start and he's risen considerably above his base price already. I'm minded to swap Robertson for Trippier, but this could be considered a luxury transfer, and there's the rotation threat of Aurier which I don't believe Robertson faces to the same degree from Moreno. And if Sarri starts to start Hazard and play him as the no. 9 like he did with Mertens at Napoli, then Salah to Hazard for 4 games seems a gamble worth taking to me. Whats bugging me about this is how much of a troll Hazard is when it comes to attractive fixture runs...

          Good post - thank you.

For me I don’t doubt Liverpool can continue to go on and score against the bigger teams, the question is which players will do the business ?

The whole squad looks much stronger this season and so when Champions League games come round I expect Klopp to utilise the squad fully.

No point having Firmino and Mane in your FPL team if he plays Shaquiri and Sturridge regardless of how many goals they score.

I think we have to take last seasons resilts with a pinch of salt:

Arsenal - probably not as bad a fixture as we think the way they are playing.
Chelsea - 1-1 fair enough, the 1-0 loss coming during he champions league excursion
Man City - game of the season, no VVD, away loss with 10 men
Spurs -2 penalties given away, Lovren having potentially the worst game I’ve seen for a Liverpool defender
Man United - Mourinho, draw away and probably a hard fixture at home.

This is all with sympathetic eyes. Thinking about ditching Salah for that run but keeping Mane.

After initially considering dropping Salah, what could very well turn into either a great or dismal decision, I transferred out Mane in one of the two FT's used this gameweek for the homecoming tie with Brighton. The reasons for keeping Salah instead were trends of previous seasons that every time Mane built up steam soon after (at least from personal previous ownership) he would then either 1. 'troll', 2. leave with a month-long injury, or 3. receive his annual red card and 3-match ban. Salah on the other hand, rarely ever receives even a yellow card, is the typified antonym of a troll, and consistently stays fit/uninjured as much as anyone could ask for.

It wasn't about Mane, it was about the two players that I wanted to get that I think will do really well throughout the next 1-2 months. I originally got Mane as a placeholder, and wasn't expecting that I would want to hold on to him this much. But, one of my two Liverpool players (Salah or Mane) had to be removed, so back to the beginning; it wasn't about getting rid of Mane, and after weighing my options I thought I would be less disappointed by dropping Mane rather than Salah, and if this turns out to be a terrible decision, downgrading is significantly easier than upgrading to a 13.0 player

and this week in particular because I think both of the other players will outscore Mane and the other transferee, this week and consecutive weeks. Obviously a bit instinctual and could regret, but instincts have been exceedingly kind this season in general.

Keeping Salah as he scored in all those games apart from United, will keep Robertson and likely just bench TAA in the tougher games away from home as he's cheap enough to do that.

On a wildcard now and not getting Mane now for this reason, will invest in Aubameyang instead and tap into that run.

Keeping TAA as rotates with AWB around that time.
Making a call after Brighton on which of Mo/Mane to switch out.
Price is factor, as is availability of alternatives.

I wouldn't read too much into last year's stats because I recall the year before, Pool actually had excellent stats vs top 6.
Also, factor in Van dijk and Allison who were not part of, last year

If you look beside United and Chelsea (whom had Conte as manager) Liverpool usually scores goal vs the other top teams, due to them also going for attack, Sarri one believes, willl play a kind of game probably suited for Liverpool, but beside these points your post is valuable in that the fixturelist from gw 5 to 11 consist of many top teams (which is probably why it prompted you to write it in the first place) and your question is well placed. I think it´s too early too make up my mind yet, but triple up looks very unlikely in my view, but then the question arises; whom to ship? In theory i would think 2 from either Mané, Salah or Firmino, seeing as it will be harder too keep cleanies one would suspect. On the other hand it is quite difficult to let go of the defender because you will presumably want them afterwards and/or in the games between. At this very moment i´m thinking of VVD and one of the attackers, and i have a Chelsea forward in mind from GW4, but it depends on who´s going to be regular at Chelsea. Could a route with Robertson/VVD and Mané be a viable route during this period, to say allow Hazard to be in the team meanwhile in place of Salah? Or is it better to rather go Salah plus Hazard, but in the process selling Mane with risk of him going further up in value? And is Salah more immune to rotation than Mané? If that, is finding a million elsewhere worth it to get Hazard for Mané? Hm.. sorry for late repost but i found your topic to raise some interesting thoughts.

Interesting stats and thanks for this. Was actually considering dropping Robertson for the tough fixtures and then bringing him back. I don't have any pressing concerns currently in my team so the hop-around could be beneficial (although not ideal).

Evening all! I have 1FT. 0.5ITB. Best advice?

        A. Save
        B. Shaw >> 5.5m (Montreal perhaps?)
        C. Patricio >> 5.0m (Dubravka / Cech / Schmeichel?)

        Hamed
        Robertson • Mendy • Shaw
        Salah • Mkhitaryan • Mané • Richarlison
        Aguero • Arnautovic • King

You could safely stick or if you want to use the FT, maybe:

          Tomkins > S.Cook

That way you can rotate Shaw with S.Cook and W-B - all capable of scoring well in the right fixture

Not used to the feeling of having no idea who to use my 2 FT on

        Foster Button
        Mendy Robertson Coleman AWB Bednarek
        Salah Mane B.Silva Richarlison Stephens
        Aguero Zaha Arnie

Think City’s fixtures are too good to take out Silva even with rotation. Coleman has 3 good home games coming up and the new transfers should begin to come into defence.

        Wildcard Team. Activated & Confirmed.

        Fabri / Hennessey
        Mendy / TAA / Cook / WB / Peltier
        Mane / Hazard / Mkhi / Rich / Kante
        Aguero / Kane / Ings

Going against the general consensus and pumping Kane, think he has goals in him regardless of fitness and fixtures.

Expecting No Salah to bite me against Brighton but after that for the next 4 not that concerned. If it proves to me a huge fail I can tinker to get him in. Something along the lines of: Kane, Hazard, Mkhi ~ Auba, Salah, Fraser

        Thoughts appreciated!

Bit concerned about that defence. Is TAA nailed? Is Cook good enough to be a starting third defender?

The attack looks exciting, albeit Sarri doesn't seem convinced that Hazard is ready to start yet.

Fabri to Hamer and TAA to VVD ?

As regards to the Cook situation was just going to rotate the 3 cheap to play alongside Mendy and TAA. Haven’t made the Peltier / Bennet decision yet, neither nailed IMO.

I just feel Kane is being massively overlooked.

The Wan-Bissaka red card is frustrating as I have the issue of Ream already being injured. But it seems a bit mental to take a -4 on getting him out when my starting 3 defenders ought to be nailed?

I just know that I'd be bringing him back in for GW9, so that's two trades right there unless that for some reason coincides with my WC. I'd expect him to deliver a few goals and assists over those five GWs anyway. Just make sure that you have better (c) options.

As someone who chose to go for Mane and Firmino over Salah since GW1, I've seen nothing that has made me reconsider my No Salah decision. 8 points each against WHU and CRY at 13m aren't the sort of returns worth jeopardizing the rest of the team for.

I think you ride the Spurs game as i'd be worried about captaincy at home to Southampton. After that, two games against top six sides you can probably remove him for but he has hud, CAR after that and you want him back.

Spurs away is only bad fixture for me.

Chelsea still look a bit dodgy defensively with new system and unless they improve would be quite happy with Salah playing away against them. Liverpool at home to man city will likely be lively too so not too worried about that one either. Then there is saints at home which looks too good to pass up.

I do think that one of the reasons though, is that this site and similar resources have become more visible and well-known, leading more people to create similar teams, following the price developments of players, and making better decisions.

I'm considering De Gea+Daniels+B.Silva > Hennessey+Alonso+Mkhi -4. Yes or No? Though those city fixtures are good. Still have Aguero though. Thoughts?

How to solve a problem like Mahrez?

                  A) Keep and pray he starts
                  B) Ditch for Pedro/Rich (-4)

I’m in the same position as you’re in.
Wanting to trust him to start against Wolves, but on the other hand felt like I’m missing out on Pedro/Rich.
Might lean on taking the -4 for either of them, freeing up funds for Alonso for GW4.

Lössl came back from his vacation so fat, Wagner didn't recognize him. Told him he won't be starting until he gets in shape, hopefully he's not there just yet...

                      Hamer
                      Alonso; Robbo; Mendy
                      Salah; Mane; Rich; Mkhi
                      Kun; King; Kamara

                      Patricio; Jota; Peltier; Bissaka

Good to go for next GW?

No kun so between Auba and Salah for me. On Auba at the moment, i only saw the 2nd half of the west ham v Bournemouth game so very biased against the hammers defence, rightly or wrongly.

Don't know though, feels like anyone apart from Salah will always be a gamble.
