Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

    How's my wildcard squad looking?

    Ederson - Hamer
    Mendy - Alonso - TAA - Tomkins - Wan-Bissaka
    Salah - Mkhitaryan - Richarlison - Fraser - Guendouzi
    Aguero - Aubameyang - Ings

Why would you have WC when you have Salah, Mane, Aguero, Richarlison, Pogba, Mendy, TAA and Arnie

Solid team and you got 95 in GW1 and you can Captain Salah this week!!!

you will massively regret that decision!

I didn't have Aguero. I've had Arnie, King and Mitrovic for the first two weeks. I don't have any flexibility up front so need premium strikers.

    Patricio, Hamer
    Mendy, VVD, Luiz (WanB, bednarek)
    Salah, mane, richarlison, bsilva (Cairney)
    Aguero, arnie, king

    What would you do?

    A. BSilva to Mkhitaryan
    B. King, Cairney, Luiz to kamara, Mkhi and Periera (Mkhi to play as 5th mid)
    C. Other?

Not for a hit, no ............. though I want him too,

His fixtures in 4 and 5 aren't ripsnorting, TBH, so I may wait til 6 to get him in. Not sure he's gonna outscore Ings by 4 in either of those games

True. And great fixtures for Arsenal up to week 10 including wks 3 to 8 which look delicious.

I tend to go agree with this -4 hit. Man city scored 6 goals last week and Bilva was not involved in any of them. So I think in the way both teams are playin at the moment Mikhi looks more likely to be involved + rotation risk free.

      1. After Supper Ghost Stories
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 24 days ago

Thank you - both got great fixtures too but maybe B Silva likely more prone to rotation. Plus City away and Arsenal home this week and reverse next week.

If I don't do the transfer and then his name is missing from the team sheet for early game on Saturday it'll spoil my whole weekend 🙂

        Arggh the dilemma...!

Wouldn't take the other players you have into consideration. Tough call but purely due to price difference, Mkhi, as I see it as very close otherwise

    2. Pinky Blinders
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 24 days ago

I prefer Mkhi since I have no other Arsenal player and he’s very talented with both goal and assist threat. Bilva is a good little player too but from watching him I don’t get the sense he has the same attacking instincts. Price also does factor into it as well.

Seeing so many people with Salah, Mane, Aguero, Richarlison, Mendy/Robertson/TAA using the WC at this stage after getting 80-90points in last 2 GWs........ WHY???

Bringing in players like Hazard and Auba who haven't done anything yet.

Disagree, its mainly used for Value and when your team is really struggling.

What if Salah, Mane, Aguero etc keep on firing and you bring in Haz and Auba and they don't get points......... stick with players in form then guessing the ones who might!

I’m not convinced enough about Benteke for Zaha to get enough assists or Zs finishing to get enough goals.

He looks good but I’d be cautious about his product. If he’s producing Palace could be top 6/7/8, no? I’m not convinced that’ll happen.

I'd have Salah Kun and Hazard as my main 3 players and build around them.
If Kun has rotation concerns, auba can come in.

Neither imo but right now Haz.

With both you’ve got to look around them. Chelsea - you’d need to be Morata / Giroud get goals.

At until that midfield settles who do you bank on providing for Auba. If Mkhitaryan, Ozil. Laca are all ?! So I’d hold off here until Arsenal or Hazard / Morata settle.

      For now build on Mo.

Hmm, who do you think will do better out of Tomkins and Cairney?

Cairney got subbed after 74 mins in GW2, whereas Tomkins played full 90 mins and for GW 3 has poss of clean sheet.

Therefore, for me best couple for your only 1 option is Tomkins and Mikki.

Fairly certain WanB gets back into the side regardless. He took one for the team and would be an odd signal by Roy to drop him because of it. Plus Ward isn’t as good.

Agreed. On that showing I’d pay up to but not quite 5m for AWB especially as Palace look better all across the park imo. Looks set to get more starts for me than my 4.5 defender which I may have to look at again later. Would love AWB to allow me to get a 4m fodder later and release .5 for my midfield.

It is a good team and a little different and I like that you have Kane. Maddison is a super pick too but no Liverpool is mad. Salah, Mane, and Firm are consistent sources of points- Pogba is not and Davies and Tripper, though great when they play, are rotation doubts

      1. Demel
        • 15 Years
        8 years, 24 days ago

You are incorrect about Pogba. His ppg this season and last season was terrific. All full backs are rotation doubts. It is making sure you have a bench which can cover.

I have Pedro too and even though playing away (despite Newcastle) it feels wrong to bench him over the other 2. I'd play Pedro.

Of the other 2, 50/50 but instinct is to play Ings - striker - therefore, I'd go with Pedro and Ings.

Agreed. Too many punty hits cost me rank last season and unlike seasons before, I couldn’t simply lean on the DGWs to bail me out. Too many people prepare adequately for them now, plus it seemed to just be a crappy year for DGWs in general. This season, I’m playing much more conservatively and it’s oddly calming not to get caught up in chasing down each bandwagon.
