Patience is proving a virtue for the Scoutcast’s latest guest, FPL General.

With top 500 finishes in all but one of his last four Fantasy Premier League seasons, his track record of giving players time to perform has certainly paid off.

Undaunted by a poor start this season he is sticking resolutely to the game plan, with Christian Eriksen and Josh King already rewarding him with attacking returns last time out, while many thousands of others were jettisoning them.

He joins Andy, David and myself to mull over a tricky last set of matches and look ahead to Gameweek 4.

Replacements for Everton’s red card villain Richarlison kick off our community question session, which also takes in Chelsea stars, the seemingly unstoppable rise of premium defenders and Wildcard timing.

David Silva is as good as he's ever been but he'll inevitably get rotated a lot more than Mane over the season.

Since pretty much every gameweek can change the players we want on our team early days, after all these years, I still don't understand why a lot of people tend to use their wildcard (myself included) before GW5. Is it something you want to get rid of so you don't think "what if I use the wildcard" every week ? Can the wildcard be a psychological pain in the ass ? How much a wildcard can determine your overall rank at the end of the season ? It's very uncertain to me. I feel like this could be an overrated chip. This season I have decided to ignore it, unless I got too many injuries/suspensions. I'd rather take -4/-8 than using the wildcard. Only plan to use it in december, but I'll need to be strong to respect my idea, since it can be very tempting every freaking week.

    1. Pierce34
      • 10 Years

I think a lot of people (Mark included, if you look at his recent comments) feel burdened by the first wildcard. That is, they don't like to have to make the decision of when to use it, so they use it at the first opportunity.

      1. tafrère

And what do you think of it ?

        1. Pierce34
          • 10 Years
          7 years, 7 months ago

I think the old cliche of 'use it when your team needs it'. Though I don't think there objectively is a right time to use it, in general I don't think we can have a clear picture of a pattern being formed this early in the season, so I try to wait until at least September.

TV is a big ort if this game and if you bet on all the wrong horses early on it’s usually beneficial to play your WC early.

If someone turns out to be essential, you get priced out, need to take hits and rely on a shoddy bench for instance it will add up over the season.

        2. Brehmeren
          • 15 Years

It used to be quite important, until last season. This season it feels like the prices change a lot faster again, which should make TV more important.

It's better used early. More people are playing the game and are active early on in the season and the most important thing to be doing in the first half of the season is to build team value. Jumping on early bandwagons and bagging price rises (obviously not at the expense of all else) is what will separate your team from the pack towards the end of the season.

      1. tafrère
        • 9 Years

Do you think so ? So the first part of the season is all about neutralising the template ?

It's about building team value. That's where the edge is in fantasy, playing the market, picking players that are on the up both in value and form. Using your funds better than your rivals and not wasting money on dud picks and poor tactical decisions (benching players that score points).

          1. tafrère
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 7 months ago

But by building team value you inevitably go for the template picks, the hype players.

There's a reason the template is a thing. Trying to be different for the sake of being different isn't a good idea.

The key is to build TV by picking real bandwagons, not one week wonders

I agree but promised myself I would keep to at least Oct but here I am using my wildcard in game week 4

    4. Alpharius
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 7 months ago

I see what Mark means about not wanting to take hits when he still has the wildcard, in the past I've used it as I wanted to avoid 2-3 price drops, ship out some bad choices and jump on a few early bandwagons, so week 3-4 was ideal. This year however I only have one problem player, and have only had to take one hit, it seems a waste to use it to avoid a -4, or even a -8 when you are going to keep 12 of your original 15 players. However the one problem player has cost me 25 Pts over the last three weeks, so I wonder whether it would have been best to use it in week 2, made the 3 changes I wanted and then be totally happy with my team.

      1. tafrère
        • 9 Years

I don't mind hits. If I look at my past history, hits have always been efficient. Even -12.

His 'motivational' tactic seems to be to openly claim that his players are rubbish. I bet he spends training sessions telling Lindelof how Herrera is better than him at playing CB.

So these 5 in the back teams is a thing now...guess it makes sense...can’t rememeber a season where so many defenders got somewhat consistent attacking returns.

FPL gold. Baines was the original, now we have multiple options.

Davies, Trippier, Shaw, Holebas, Azpi & Bertrand etc...

Took a -4 earlier this week, team looking like this now :

      Foster Hart

      Alonso Mendy Lowton Tomkins Wan-Bissaka

      Salah Mané Walcott Fraser Ward

      Aguero Zaha Wilson

      Got £1.8 in the bank.

Don't like my Burnley assets, otherwise I'm pretty satisfied. I just hope Ward will get more minutes with Cardiff (could have scored last week, it's a shame).

Question is : do I take an additionnal -4 to bring Ederson in for Hart ?

      1. MTPockets

          I wouldn't

I could just wait next week to get him for free. But City at home against Newcastle looks too good especially when Foster plays Spurs and Hart plays United.

Save points in both games. More likely in the spurs game as they can hit the target.

There's rotation risk with Schurrle + I don't like Fulham fixtures.

I'm keeping £1.8 itb because I already brought in the players I wanted and not really keen on taking an additionnal hit for anyone else.

No, hold off on that one. Even if Ederson outscores them by 4 points it won’t be enough to massively impact your Gameweek and you’ll be gutted if you’re on a -8 and Ederson concedes

        a) Jeff Hendrick (MUN, wol, BOU, car, HUD) 5.5
        b) Ryan Fraser (che, LEI, bur, CRY, wat) 5.6

Thoughts on Jeff Hendrick from Burnley?

5.5m playing in the hole behind the striker. Pretty nice stats, 4 shots on goal, took corners etc. Gudmundsson also out injured so he's likely to continue to be the lynchpin for the side.

        Seems a hidden gem.

Scored 3 goals so far in the league. I see no reason why they're any worse than any other mid-low table team. It's the defense that seems particularly suspect.

Doesn't mean he won't score well in future. The fact he's on FKs and corners is a big deal since Burnley score a lot from set pieces.

Corners is a good thing as Burnley are good from set pieces but I can’t see him doing as well as Fraser. If Fraser stays injury free that is!

Same has above. Fraser looks good, but the fixtures look better for Hendrick to me.
Brady, Gudmundsson out leaves him on DFKs too.

Fraser probably edges it since his stats are really favorable, but that 0.1m saved (which actually matters to me when I'm looking for a Cairney replacement) and the amazing 0.02% ownership for Hendrick could make him a steal.
