Burnley’s exit from the Europa League may well see the Lancashire outfit become a side of Fantasy Premier League interest once again.

After a 1-1 draw with Olympiakos at Turf Moor on Thursday night, they were eliminated 4-2 on aggregate.

The players involved, and those that weren’t, have given us a fairly decent idea of who might start their Gameweek 4 meeting with Manchester United.

We have also looked ahead to the Clarets’ fixtures after the international break to assess where they may become useful to FPL managers.

Burnley 1-1 Olympiakos (2-4 on aggregate)

  • Goals: Matej Vydra (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m)

Burnley centre-back Ben Mee (£5.0m) may be at risk of rotation when Manchester United come to Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon. The 28-year-old filled the void left by suspended Ben Gibson (£4.9m) as the Clarets were eliminated from the Europa League by Olympiakos on Thursday night. He played alongside Kevin Long (£4.5m) with James Tarkowski (£5.0m) an unused substitute. Given that Mee played for the full 90 minutes it is possible that Gibson may take his place in the league for Gameweek 4.

There was a second start of the campaign for Tom Heaton (£5.0m), although it does appear that he could be the goalkeeper for cup competitions for now. After he made his comeback for the first leg in Greece last week doubt was cast over Joe Hart’s (£4.5m) place in the side but he went on to start the next league match. It is possible the same thing may happen again this week but manager Sean Dyche is still yet to field a question on the subject.

Which player will feature on the left-wing for Burnley, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) not expected to be fit in time and Robbie Brady (£5.4m) still out, remains to be seen. FPL defender Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) came on for the injured Icelandic international in a straight swap at Fulham, and would have been a shoe-in had he not played 90 minutes at left-back on Thursday night. At the very least, that firms up Stephen Ward‘s (£5.0m) place in the team for Sunday, as he was an unused substitute.

Operating on the left flank against Olympiakos was teenager Dwight McNeil (not yet in FPL), making his first start of the season. The youngster registered 405 minutes during the pre-season campaign and has impressed in his appearances so far, the most recent prior to last night being against Aberdeen. He was replaced by Chris Wood (£6.5m) in the 75th minute so has had more rest than Taylor ahead Manchester United’s visit to Turf Moor.

“(McNeil) did great against Aberdeen, and again tonight, and each time that experience level goes up. That little bit of belief gets added, and we hope he grows more belief from tonight. It’s early days, but we do like what he’s doing. And he’s there on merit. Opportunity came his way with Johann (Berg Gudmundsson) going down, and he’s taken a real step forward.” – Sean Dyche

Ashley Barnes (£5.8m) and Sam Vokes (£5.4m) were the strike pairing with Wood only featuring for 15 minutes. Barnes made way for goal-scorer Matej Vydra (£6.0m) in the 65th minute, suggesting that he should be chosen up front alongside Wood again on Sunday.

Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) was another first-team option who started the European encounter but was replaced in the 75th minute by Jack Cork (£4.9m), securing his place in Sunday’s line-up.

Perhaps also of importance was Dyche’s reaction to Burnley’s exit from the European competition. Now that the Clarets are out they should be able to get back to the basics that made them so successful both in 2016/17 and 2017/18. That may be good news for FPL managers as Burnley have a run of fairly favourable fixtures from Gameweeks 5 to 8, in Wolves (away), Bournemouth (home), Cardiff (away) and Huddersfield (home).

“I thought we dominated the game and dominated the chances. The biggest bug bear is you’ve got to take your chances. We created enough chances. I wanted our team to get back to their identify and I feel that clearly happened today. No disappointments, just learning. We were effective. I thought we had so many chances, it could easily have gone our way. It was an excellent performance, we created so many chances. Winning it was the least we deserved and we could have gone through but we didn’t take our chances. It was back to our identity, a never-say-die attitude. I’m very pleased and very proud of the players. I think the whole club will learn from this. It bodes well for the future but we’ve got to use it wisely.” – Sean Dyche

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Taylor, Mee, Long, Bardsley; McNeil (Wood 75′), Hendrick, Westwood, Lennon (Cork 75′); Barnes (Vydra 65′), Vokes.

AWB - Decent chance of a CS and could also get attacking returns
Can't see Bournemouth scoring more than 1, and if Bournemouth do score then the likely scorer is Wilson (or King)

Subs are atrocious. At least there's WB, but two playable ones would be better. It's very template, but that's not a bad thing for now. A few 'bandwagon' players that I do not trust for points atm are Zaha and Walcott. Rest of the team is solid and I like the Dilva pick. Keep an eye on LIV rotation however, as both picks could end up being benched for some easy PL games. For now, there aren't too many standout replacements however. 7/10 good luck mate

Its all about stats to me. Wally and Ings are overperforming right now, while both Mitro and Fraser have big numbers everywhere, not just in goals and assists chart

            • 8 Years
            7 years, 10 months ago

Thank you! Whilst Walcott has certainly been overperforming (like Moura imo), Ings has not however. His stats are almost as good as Mitro. Difference is Mitro is in a more attacking team and has an added aerial threat as well as secured pens and some direct free-kicks. Overall I'd say B easily too, but, if Mitro is 2nd choice FWD, Ings as 3rd choice ain't bad

Sitting on Ciarney, Tomkins & Ings with .09 ITB. Was hoping to not have to use my 2nd transfer this week (Rich to Theo) and upgrade to Alonso next week but now thinking I need to bring in PVA for Tomkins to field a team? Looking for other options or confirmation on PVA.

    Hi folks,

Not usually one to do this, but really stumped this week. Would welcome some advice!

I'm thinking about trying to get in one or more of Alonso, Hazard, Walcott, Zaha but really unsure which one(s) to get in, and how. I've got 2 FT and 0.4m in the bank. I know Rich has to go, but apart from that, I'm struggling.

    Pat, Foster,
    Mendy, R'son, Shaw, WB, Bedranek
    Salah, Rich'son, Miki, Mane, Cairney
    Aguero, Arnie, King

I wouldn't know how to do it, but ideally you want Zaha and Alonso for this week as they could score massively. This is the first game of a very strong stretch for Palace so you want to get him asap.

      1. More Cowbell

It would prob need to be a -4:
        - Shaw > Alonso
        - King > Zaha
        - Richalison > 4.6m

Problem is I'm not sure who the 4.6 mid would be and whether that would be worth a -4? Thoughts?

          • 10 Years
          7 years, 10 months ago

I think it'd be worth the -4 in the long run, certainly. Only problem is Bednarek, Cairney and Arnie all injured so you'd need to play that 4.6 this week.

Tricky week for me to pick my starting 11

need to choose 3 from 6

    A) Shaw (Burnley (A))
    B) AWB (Southampton H)
    C) Jorginho (Bournemouth H)
    D) Neves (west ham (A))
    E) Jimenez (west ham (A))
    F) Wilson (chelsea (A))

Which 3 would go pick? any help or advice would be fab currently going with A, C, E

My advice would be to not leave yourself with such a benching headache each week and use your FTs to downgrade some and improve others.

Out of those I'd choose B and E and not fussed on the last.

        I have 3M in the bank...lol

maybe need to look the otherway and upgrade some of these (was thinking Jorginho to Pereyra or Frazer and Shaw to Tripper over next few weeks)

        Salah, Hazard, Walcott (Jorginho, Neves)

Tough one. I have Neves or Costa
On the basis that LIV have a good defence, i'd punt on Costa for the week

I'm an owner & benching him this week as I think he will be rotated, I understand that logic but then why wouldn't people have Gundogan for 2m cheaper?

What makes you think he'll be rotated?

If you had Gundogan I wouldn't suggest dropping him either.

Gündogan is only in the team because KdB got injured after the season started. Bernardo Silva played himself into the team before the season started. People don't have unlimited amount of transfers.

Because I have Richarlison to deal with first. Also, I don't mind owning B Silva for now.

    A) Mitrovic, Moura & Walcott
    B) Mitrovic, Walcott & Alonso

    This is my team:
    Hart
    Mendy, Robertson, Wan-Bissaka
    Pedro, Mkhitaryan, Salah, Richarlison
    Aguero, Aubameyang, Ings

    Hamer, Nampalys Mendy, Lowton, Stankovic

For a hit of -8? Kindly advise

    1. Dyballer
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

No way for a -8. I guess taking Rich out is a priority, so I'd get a replacement this week. I don't trust Moura or Walcott, but both have even upside for now. Gut call for that one. Rich has better immediate fixtures tho. Mitro will be a good addition BUT LATER FOR FREE. Alonso has good fixtures now, so if you can get him and a Rich replacement for -4, that's prob the best way to go for now

Fear due to Liverpools champions league draw, Salah will have a lot of rotation, is the 13m going to be worth it once those fixtures come along?

    1. kalmoffit
      • 12 Years

I'm hoping not. Though taking him out for his difficult fixtures last time was a train wreck.

Haha I really doubt he's the one you should be worrying about. I'm pretty sure Firmino and Mane are the likelier to be rested. Liverpool lack their clinical edge without Salah and Klopp won't prioritise CL over PL until Liverpool are cruising near the top of the league and have gotten past the group stage at least

Long-term absentees Kevin De Bruyne [knee] and Claudio Bravo [Achilles] are unavailable, but the rest of the players are ready to face Newcastle. “Everybody’s okay, everybody’s fit,” Guardiola confirmed. #MCFC

    Ryan
    Robertson Mendy Alonso WB
    Mane Walcott Mkhi Cairney
    Aguero(c) Auba(vc)

    Foster King Stephen Ward

    2.3 ITB, no FT

I need to take out Cairney for a hit as he is out for a month.
My options are either Moura ( with only 0.1 left in the bank ) or have someone like Pedro or something around 6.5m so that I have enough cash in case I want to to change King to Zaha or Mitro later.

    Please feel free to suggest.
