The captaincy discussion for Gameweek 5 of Fantasy Premier League probably isn’t quite as clear-cut as our recent poll indicates.

While Manchester City’s number one striker has run away with it, there are strong cases for alternative options.

We’ve weighed up the results of the vote, compare individual and team statistics and analyse what the Rate My Team tool says to ascertain the best captain for this weekend.

The Captain Poll

A home clash with Fulham has led to Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) amassing a huge lead in the captain poll ahead of Gameweek 5. The Manchester City striker has, at time of writing, a massive 58% of the vote.

Aguero’s three goals and two assists thus far have convinced Fantasy managers that he can deliver another big haul. In fact, he has even overtaken Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) as the most fashionable player in FPL, with 51.6% ownership.

Salah’s popularity continues to fall as shown by the fact that he currently sits fourth in our poll with just under 5% of the vote. Captaincy interest in Liverpool’s trip to Spurs on Saturday lunch-time is low, with Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£10.0m) backed by under 3% of our voters. That’s despite the latter averaging 9.75 points per match so far, Salah at 6.75 and Kane 5.0.

Joining Aguero in the top three are Chelsea pair Eden Hazard (£10.7m) and Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) who are expected to do very well against Cardiff. Both players have registered returns in every single match so far combining for three goals and seven assists.

Hazard is the more popular for the captaincy out of the two, by some distance. At the time of writing the Belgian has 19% of the vote while Alonso is only just ahead of Salah with his 4.5% share. Perhaps understandable given the differences in classification and price.

Outside the top six are some interesting differential candidates, all of whom look capable of delivering points in Gameweek 5. Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) has 1.15% backing after registering four assists in his first four league matches and adding another international duty.

Just behind him is Arsenal frontman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) who scored his first goal of the season against Cardiff last week. The Gabonese forward has a trip to Newcastle this time around and continues to prove more popular than colleague Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m). The Frenchman has outscored him so far but is backed by just 0.68% in this week’s captain poll.

Danny Ings (£5.6m), Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) and Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) complete the top 10 with, at time of writing, 0.84%, 0.77% and 0.73% backing respectively.

Ings has two goals in his last three starts and hosts a travel sick Brighton outfit on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Lukaku is currently second among strikers for shots in the penalty area and efforts on target ahead of a trip to Watford.

    Richarlison Down the Middle

“My first words when he joined us - I told you he can play all three positions of attack.

“I seen him many, many times playing as a striker, on the left and right in Brazil. It’s not a surprise for me.”

He overachieved a bit, but I feel satisfied I started season with him for 6.5, he would be priced at least 7.0 if he went to Everton before launch. I expected he might end up top.

I could have just keep him and played Billing last week, but ok.

On a WC and debating whether to draft Ryan Fraser in despite his injury. Harmstrings are difficult to predict and can take weeks despite looking like minor injuries.

My bench consists of AWB, Bennett and Hojbjerg.

So should I play safe and get Demarai Gray instead or punt on Fraser who I think is a MUCH better Fantasy asset than Gray??

    1. MTPockets
      8 years, 5 days ago

Can't see why you'd get Fraser in on wc now, esp if planning on Richarlison back/benched in anticipation.

    Any Saints fans around?

I'm on a WC and looking for a one-week punt (apart from Pedro, since I already have him) before getting Richarlison.

I was set on getting Elyounoussi due to his great underlying stats, but on Southampton's official site it says that Redmond has nailed down the LW spot with Elyounoussi / JWP / Armstrong competing for RW. Plus, Elyounoussi tends to get subbed off early while Redmond played every single minute so far.

Would you go for Redmond or Elyounoussi as a one week punt?

    1. Eden Wizard
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 5 days ago

Redmond has stats too but 0 pedigree 😆

Do you actually think those guys will outscore your bench fodder by more than 4 points? If not, just get Richarlison and bench him.

      1. stat
        8 years, 5 days ago

        Yeah:
Mitro - I don't think he'll score vs City, and might get booked out of frustration
Shaw - Probably won't start vs Watford
AWB - Only has a decent chance of keeping a CS if Tomkins plays, and that's unclear

        1. Nailed Jesus
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 5 days ago

I'd have to disagree and save a transfer. But if I had to pick one, Elyonoussi fits the definition of a 'one week punt'. Redmond isn't a punt, he's just a bad pick. No a Saints fan btw.

          1. stat
            8 years, 4 days ago

Also there's a risk Richarlison gets injured in training by the time the Arsenal game comes around. It's the equivalent of making an early transfer.

Is it crazy to keep FT while having three doubtful player (Zaha, Fraser, Mkhi) in starting 11 and only having 1 playing sub (AWB)? Despite having a risk of being left with 9 players playing, I still want to keep my transfer this week and want to have 2 FT next week. Reasons in my mind:

    - Even if Zaha does not play this week he is very likely to play next week. I would like to keep him because of his good fixture going forward and prefer to do Ings>Mitro next week instead of doing Zaha>Mitro this week. Ings has much better fixture than Mitro for this GW and the other way around after this GW.

    - Same applies to Fraser, even if he does not play this week, might have a good chance to play next week. He is in form, has a good fixture until GW11, no real alternative at the same price (which means I may need 2 transfer to replace him with a decent MID). Besides, MID alternatives in my mind (Richarlison, Pereyra) is either banned or having bad fixture this week. Better to transfer them in next week.

    - If Mkhi starts and does well this week, it would be nice to have for following 2 weeks. Otherwise, I can downgrade him to Richarlison which would enable me to replace Ings with Mitro next week. It does not make sense to sell him this week alone.

I would appreciate any opinion, team below:

    Patricio
    Alonso Mendy Robertson
    Salah Hazard Mkhi* Fraser*
    Kun Zaha* Ings

    Hamer* AWB Cairney* Peltier*
    1 FT, 0,6 ITB

Almost in similar position but I got Tomkins instead of AWB. And I got Walcott instead of Fraser... But I would like to see how every comes back from international duty and decide after . Only option is Wally to Pedro for me and next week potentially to Rich.. which does not make too much sense... Tough call here

Probably worth it, due to Hazard & Mendy fixtures this weekend, they'll make up the -4

Do you have Aguero and Mane?

Any possible way you could get Hazard on a -4 and have Aguero/Salah/Hazard in your 11?

Will never understand why Red Flags affect price changes.

Hamer was 90% towards a rise. Red Flag removed. 0%.

Maybe because they first adjust required transfers out for a drop when red.

The red flag protects him from a drop so I guess they don't want players to benefit two-fold

Which 1 should I start & which one first on the bench (feel like Shaw or Walcott might get 0 mi) tomorrow?

    A). Shaw
    B). Neves
    C). Walcott

    Currently on

    Patricio (Hamer)
    Mendy Cook AWB (Peltier* Coleman*)
    Mane Mkhi Bilva Pedro (Cairney*)
    Firmino (K)un Auba

    Coleman to
    a) Tarkowski (now Burnley are out of Europe)
    b) Shaw (risky with injury)
    c) another?

Had wanted Bobby to Zaha this week; but with doubts on Wilfred and no bench to speak of, I think this is more pressing.

IF I went with Tarkowski, would you start him or Cook? Cheers

    Kinda sad Walcott is fit.
It means I have to take Mkhi out, who I think will start and absolutely smash it against Newcastle.

How does this starting XI look for the GW?

    Patricio
    Alonso - Shaw - Mendy
    Mané - Hazard - Dilva - Maddison
    Mitro - Aguero (C) - Wilson

    Bench: Ryan - AWB - Holebas - N. Mendy

Would you drop Bilva to 1st sub for Shaw? My gut is telling me Pep might lineup like this and I can't afford a 1 pointer cameo as I'm contemplating a -8 hit (Alli for Haz and Lloris for Henny).

    Kun
    Jesus Dilva Sterling
    Gundo Fernandinho
    Mendy Laporte Stones Walker
    Ederson

Hi all, just logged back in from the international break. Not 100% sure what to do with the following:

    Patricio
    AWB, Robbo, Boly, Mendy
    Bilva, Wally, Salah
    Aguero (c), Zaha, Auba

    Fabianski, Stephens, Cairney, Daniels

    2FT, £0.4, ITB

Want to hold Wally and Zaha ideally, maybe get rid of Bilva? Any advice welcome!

Thoughts on this wildcard team??... I felt like I needed to bring in Hazard and Alonso in, would have had to do a -8 or more because of low Team value and FT's otherwise

    Begovic
    Pereira Alonso Mendy
    Salah Moura Hazard Dilva Billing
    Aguero Wilson

    Boruc. AWB Bennett Success

    Best Transfer with 2 FTs:

    1. Salah & Bilva >> Hazard & Dilva
    2. Mane & Bilva >> Hazard & Pereyra
    3. Hold (and use 1 FT to change some fodder)

    Thanks

I would keep Salah and do Mane -> Hazard somehow.
