The captaincy discussion for Gameweek 5 of Fantasy Premier League probably isn’t quite as clear-cut as our recent poll indicates.

While Manchester City’s number one striker has run away with it, there are strong cases for alternative options.

We’ve weighed up the results of the vote, compare individual and team statistics and analyse what the Rate My Team tool says to ascertain the best captain for this weekend.

The Captain Poll

A home clash with Fulham has led to Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) amassing a huge lead in the captain poll ahead of Gameweek 5. The Manchester City striker has, at time of writing, a massive 58% of the vote.

Aguero’s three goals and two assists thus far have convinced Fantasy managers that he can deliver another big haul. In fact, he has even overtaken Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) as the most fashionable player in FPL, with 51.6% ownership.

Salah’s popularity continues to fall as shown by the fact that he currently sits fourth in our poll with just under 5% of the vote. Captaincy interest in Liverpool’s trip to Spurs on Saturday lunch-time is low, with Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£10.0m) backed by under 3% of our voters. That’s despite the latter averaging 9.75 points per match so far, Salah at 6.75 and Kane 5.0.

Joining Aguero in the top three are Chelsea pair Eden Hazard (£10.7m) and Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) who are expected to do very well against Cardiff. Both players have registered returns in every single match so far combining for three goals and seven assists.

Hazard is the more popular for the captaincy out of the two, by some distance. At the time of writing the Belgian has 19% of the vote while Alonso is only just ahead of Salah with his 4.5% share. Perhaps understandable given the differences in classification and price.

Outside the top six are some interesting differential candidates, all of whom look capable of delivering points in Gameweek 5. Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) has 1.15% backing after registering four assists in his first four league matches and adding another international duty.

Just behind him is Arsenal frontman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) who scored his first goal of the season against Cardiff last week. The Gabonese forward has a trip to Newcastle this time around and continues to prove more popular than colleague Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m). The Frenchman has outscored him so far but is backed by just 0.68% in this week’s captain poll.

Danny Ings (£5.6m), Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) and Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) complete the top 10 with, at time of writing, 0.84%, 0.77% and 0.73% backing respectively.

Ings has two goals in his last three starts and hosts a travel sick Brighton outfit on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Lukaku is currently second among strikers for shots in the penalty area and efforts on target ahead of a trip to Watford.

Am I being overly optimistic expecting a great GW?

    Hamer
    Alonso(vc), Mendy, Bennet
    Salah, Mané, Mkhi, Pedro
    Aguero(c), Arnie, Wilson

    Hart, AWB, Robbo, CHO

    0 FT 0.0 ITB

Many with Mkhi and Pedro expect both to start? I do. Also, Thoughts on my Bennet, AWB, Robbo pecking order? Can't see Robbo getting a clean sheet so would be relying on attaching returns. Don't really see more than 2 away goals (Liverpool fan)

I honestly can't see why. Bookies have Wolves 3rd most likely for a clean sheet. Would be relying on an assist. Absolutely possible that Bennet flukes some attacking returns too

Afternoon guys, rate my wild card:

    Patricio
    Mendy Robertson Alonso
    Mane Hazard Maddison Pedro
    Aguero Lacazette Wilson

    (AWB Bennet Mcdonald)

Really wanted to get Vardy instead of Lacazette, but I’m not sure if I should double up on Leicester. Overall I’m happy with this team.

Thoughts? Anything I need to do?

That would actually be great. Leicester looked good against Liverpool and I’m expecting a lot from Vardy after suspension

Pretty similar to mine - only I cut some players to get DSilva.
      Robertson is Doherty
      Maddison is DSilva
      Lacazette is Vardy
Yeah and Patricio is paired with Hamer.

You can’t have Pedro on a WC surely. This is the chance to ditch the doubtful players.

      Laca (9.4) to Vardy (8.9)
      Pedro (6.8) to Dilva (8.5)
      Maddison (6.6) to D.Gray (5.5)
      Bennett/AWB (4.1) to any (4.0)

This should be the exact £. Although if you need a 0.1 due to having bought a player at a lower price then downgrade the 4.0 to an absolute fodder of a 3.9.

Arsenal midfielder minutes (out of 360):
    Guendouzi 304
    Xhaka 294
    Mkhitaryan 271
    Ramsey 255
    Özil 240

Struggling to see where the Mkhi panic has come from, he missed 1 game?
It's SO early in the season and teams aren't settled. This show's that none of them are nailed, like City. I've been tempted for two weeks, to hold Mkhi and hope he hauls, incredible fixtures and talent.

Add Auba, Laca and Iwobi in and to me it's a rotation nightmare. That one minute cameo was my concern - that was done when they were holding a 2-3 lead and had defenders on the bench. Not nailed is half the problem...

Those stats arent relevant. Mkhi got dropped and Arsenal attacked better and won against a defensive Cardiff. Theyre going to go play a defensive Newcastle now, nothing will change

I'm in the same boat but fancy Mendy Dilva and Ag on WC, so Ederson is going for 2 cheapo rotating ones if I can work out the best choice imo (see below)..

What rotation keepers are people going with?

There's no right answer to your question at this point, not enough data.

Any suggestions will do as it doesn't have to be right..

I think there are a few choices, but can't remember which ones..

Guess I have to research the season ticker then..

Playing BSilva, Zaha, Fraser with Davies, Guendouzi, Kamara on the bench. Should I use my 1FT this week?

Its ready, any thoughts? 0.2 ITB. Yes, it is different than others and dont have Liverpool assets.

    Rui (Hamer)
Alonso - Mendy - Shaw (AWB - Bennet)
    Haz - DSilva - Pedro - Ramsey - (Billing)
    Kun - Lukaku - Wilson

Got all of Zaha, Jimenez and Fraser in my team. Zaha is 75% according to Ben Dinnery, Jimenez 50% and Fraser 25%. My bench is crap with Kabasele, Stephens and Peltier.

Got 0,0m in bank and 1 free transfer.

    What to do?

    A. Jimenez and Fraser to Ings and Neves (Ings unvailable next week though) -4 points
    B. Jimenez and Fraser to Wilson and Hojberg
    C. Just Fraser to Neves and hope the best
    D. Stop bothering and just wildcard

Fraser unlikely to play this week. Mkhi probaby a 1 point. If you can absorb this, then agree

Anybody else considering the Patricio & McCarthy Gk combo on WC?
Gameweek 6 is the problem but it seems fine after that.

Dont think you will play McCarthy in any of the next 5 games, better to get some cheap GK instead and save 0.5

    GTG on WC?

    Patricio
    Alonso Mendy Doherty
    Hazard Mane DSilva Pedro
    Aguero(c) Ings Wilson
    4.0 Maddison AWB Holebas

Why spend 6.5 on Maddison only to bench him?

I like maddison bench though. Bournemouth are the strongest defence so far this season and leicester are one of the weakest offense plus maddison dosnt really have nice stats

    Maddison the latest troll?

He is a fine player who passes the eye test, but his underlying stats arent great. He is a young English player, so perhaps overrated? I enjoy watching him, but not sure he is a great FPL candidate.

Gray will save the bank and score as many as long as he starts. Maddison is overhyped
